Dear Reader: Jade Star the final novel of the Star series, first appeared in May 1987. I haven't rewritten this novel; it's just wearing nice new clothes. Saint Morris has always been my favorite character among all the wonderful San Francisco men. He is fascinating, honorable, and sexy-the perfect hero. Saint first meets Juliana DuPres on the island of Maui when he is a very young doctor, just landed off a whaler, and she is the fourteen-yesr-old daughter of an impossibly puritanical minister. When he leaves Maui he takes her girl's heart with him. When Saint sees Juliana again it is four years later and she is being sold in a Barbary Coast slave auction in San Francisco. He saves her, then returns her to her parents in Maui. But there is no welcome home for Juliana. She is an outcast, reviled by her family, considered no better than a prostitute. What is Saint to do? He does what any honorable man would do-he marries her and takes her back to San Francisco. He likes to thin of himslef as her protector and her brother. Juliana has other ideas. Now their adventures begin. In Jade Star you will see again the full cast of characters form the other San Francisco novels. I do hope you'll write and tell me which are your favorites.

So boring. I love Saint, but a nun is more interesting than Jules. I mean a guy grabbed her boob and she acts like it was a gang rape. I'm not saying it's right, but she's no Jodie Foster. She's boring me to tears.

I enjoyed this book and was very glad to know how Juliana and Michael found their love. I was happy to see HEA but sometimes I am okay to read tragic ends. The great thing of this story is despite how the destiny sometimes pull Juls and Michael, and push them together, doesn't matter how a sick Wilkes wanted to get Juliana in his hands, they found their happiness.
Why did I put 4 stars? Because I was expected more emotional filling in this book, and also more tension, and more erotic scenes with an explicit description. I know this is a history Romance but I compared these series with DEVIL series and NIGHT TRILOGY written by Catherine Coulter which were very tense and hot. That's why I wanted to see more. Plus, the style of writing is different and it pull me out from the story a little.
I would like to check other books of this series for sure since I like this book. Cannot wait to find out about other characters that I knew from this story. Especially about Brent and Byrony. ;)

When Julianna is kidnapped while swimming in Hawaii, she finds herself in a nightmare, ending up on the auction block. Saint, a San Francisco doctor from her past, is determined to rescue her.
Out of the four books in this quartet, this book is by far the best. Saint has always been a jovial, kind man, so he had the most potential as a hero. Of course, Coulter has to completely mess up his character by making him full of insane doubts, high-handedness, and arrogance. He's never so bad as the other heroes, but it was a complete 180 from his character. Jules goes from traumatized to in love in the blink of an eye, with only a few chapters of believable reticence. The villain in this one is straight up soap-opera crazy, with an absurd motive that never really makes sense.

Really 2.5 stars. If it was a modern day book it would be one star. I am mostly giving it a star and a half based on the era it was written and the fact that some of Coulter's backlist is much more cringy must I remind you of the following:
a) The rape that was defended by cream
b) A gang rape to justify the MMC grooming and raping the FMC
c) FMC is constantly blamed for being raped when she was a teen by her brother in law
d) Creepy uncles selling your virginity to teach you a lesson
It's a 80's bodice ripper so expect to be offended. I really cringed when reading about the whole freed slave town complete with horrible dialect and a character named Mammy. I kid you not. The misogynic undertones of bodice rippers are there as well. Though as far as Coulter hero's go Saint is probably one of the least abusive-that's not saying much since there's a scene where he punishes the heroine that I think is suppose to be seen as sexy (it's not). But hey there's no maritial rape or grooming-although, the character is sexually assaulted though not by the MMC. One thing I do like about Coulter's books besides the fact they do have fairly diverse settings. This one takes place in Gold rush era California and it's so hard to find a non-British empire set historical. But still 80's bodice rippers sort of a scary genre.

January 24, 2021This was just okay for me. I was frustrated with how solidly Michael built up a wall to keep himself from feeling too much for Jules. He continued to make assumptions about what was best for her in the name of protecting her and it made the story drag at times. It felt like the same fight over and over.
The villain gets more unbelievable as the story goes on, again it was peppered in to make that storyline drag.

I enjoyed this book for what it was. It was an easy to read, fairly formulaic, historical romance. Of course, some aspects of the plot unfolded in an overly simplistic fashion, yet I was interested in the characters and what was happening to them. And, there were several tense moments in which I wasn't sure which direction the author would take us.

This was a dark romance. It starts off with the heroine swimming in the waters of Hawaii and then is kidnapped. The story is fairly action packed, disturbing, but then dissolves into some tedious back/forth between the hero and heroine. Its resolved quickly and then circles back to the beginning, with a cringy ending. Okay, but too long honestly.

I enjoyed Jules and Saint Michael's story very much. Such strife both had to endure to truly understand how each of them felt for the other.

This is the first book I've read in the series, but it really makes me want to go back and read the others. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Juliana and Saint. In all honesty, I would really read this book more like a 4 1/2 star, but I enjoyed it enough to bump it up to a 5 star rating. I really enjoyed hearing about Juliana's early life in Hawaii and her interests there. I also love how the author worked in little facts about Hawaiian history and culture. The book took a lot of twists and turns in the plot as well as the characters. It was very easy to follow though and enjoyable. I'm very interested in learning more about this all black town that was started by two of the other characters in one of the previous books. It sounds fascinating and I wonder if it has any basis in fact at all. Also I'm interested in hearing a little bit more about Thomas and how his life turned out. Did he become a doctor? How did his marriage end up going? All of those little questions that make you want to continue to read a series and books by the same author. As always Catherine Coulter did not disappoint.

I liked this book a lot more than the middle 2 in the series. Jules is a missionaries daughter who grew up on Hawaii. When she was young she met Saint and fell in love with him. He left though, and she hasn't fallen in love with anyone else. When she is kidnapped and taken to San Francisco to be sold as a sex slave, Saint saves her. The eventually have to marry. And then after the necessary fall out, they fall in love. What really made me love this book was Jules brother, Thomas. I love how he put Penelope in her place and tames her. I also love reading about the lives of the characters in the middle two books. Although I wish you would somehow have seen Alex and Giana again. Overall, a great read.

I'm sensing a theme of abuse, non-con and abduction from Ms. Coulter. These are all written around the same time period. Makes one wonder what is going on in her life, non?
Juliana is a preacher's kid who is innocent, sweet and then totally despoiled. Her family rejects her and she needs a white knight. Morris rides in on his stallion and sweeps her away. He wants to treat her as if he was a brother? Ugh, what brother marries their sister? Odd. But, he's swayed by Juliana's seductive tricks. Happily ever after is achieved in this damsel in distress romance.

Saint Morris has an actual real name!! His name is Michael! He earned the nickname Saint in medical school (HARVARD) when a cadaver was brought in. Saint saw the eyelids flicker, and had to fight his teacher to NOT cut into the man!
Jules was someone he knew in Hawaii. She was brought to San Francisco by a slaver who was dying of stomach cancer. He meets a tragic end, a painful end, and you almost feel sorry for him.
Byrony has a big baby, and Brent nearly goes out of his mind.
Chauncey and Del also have bit parts in it!!
All in all, a nice conclusion, and an enjoyable read!

This is about San Francisco in 1850's. I felt that it was very true to what life would have been in time period. I would say that this is a adult only book with several racy parts.

The star quartet was fun because this family lived and moved to so many interesting places in the world. Each transition was seamless and fun.
