Through this illustrated tale about the moon stealing the sun's glory, children learn about the importance of humility and the dangers of pride. This rhyming, rollicking tale tells of a crime of cosmic the moon, blinded by pride, fails to see the true source of his abilities-the light provided by the sun. He boasts of his ability to shine, to change shape throughout each month, and to swell the tides. One day, overwhelmed by a piercing ray of sunshine, the moon repents of his pride and changes his ways, and from that point on he is happy to reflect the sun's light. This beautifully illustrated book introduces the concept of humility to children. Readers will be reminded that everything we have, including our gifts and talents, is from God. Just as the moon learns to boast only of the sun, children-and their parents-learn that to boast of anything other than the Son is utter foolishness.
Have you ever studied astronomy? Do you remember which makes its own light—the sun or the moon? A young lad is praying to God about a “cosmic story” which he had heard. The pompous moon brags and boasts each night about how his great light makes the darkness flee. Then one day something arises which gives lie to the moon’s claims. Can you guess what it is? And what lesson do you think the boy asks God to help him learn from the moon?
This rhyming tale and the beautiful illustrations combine to introduce the concepts of pride and humility to children in a way that they can more easily understand them. In the back are some “Galactic Didactic” questions for discussion and a few “Did You Know?” facts about the moon. T. Fool Moon Rising is a wonderful way to impress a very important Biblical principle on the minds of youngsters, reminding us all that everything which we have comes from God.
Grade K-1 Genre Poetry I enjoyed reading this story and think it is a great reminder for all ages who makes all things possible. It also reminds readers that we should not take credit when all glory should go to God. I also liked that this book used scripture to support the theme, not many books (to my knowledge) that have christian themes support their work with scripture.
The moon is full of boasting, bragging, and pride about all the things he can do as he steals glory. Until one day he is shown where his real light comes from. This book is full of moon facts throughout the story.
Wonderful book, flows really well with humble/pride Sunday school lesson. I read this to tweens and they enjoyed it and captured the essence of the story.
My children all enjoyed this book – although my 11 year old found it too young, the other two liked it and my son really enjoyed the pictures. While reading my children discussed why the moon was wrong and how he should have acted – of course we all need a good dose of humble pie at times. This book is a wonderful teaching tool that we must always keep our eyes focused on the Lord and everything comes from Him, none of it is through our own powers.
At the end of the book are some pictures/illustrations of galaxies and nebula as well as some questions to ask children such as “What is the Moon doing that is wrong?” as well as some did you know facts – such as the first fruit eaten in space was a peach. Cute and a great way to instill the Biblical concept of humility and trusting in the Lord Jesus this book will be sure to be enjoyed over and over again.

Looking for a simple and beautifully illustrated book to teach children the concept of humility?
Look no further than Fool Moon Rising by Kristi and T. Lively Fluharty.
From the glowing punch of color on each glossy page to the whimsical rhyme of the story itself, this book captures a child's attention from the first to the last page.
The moon is quite foolish. It seems he has become a bit prideful. He boasts of his light, his power to control his shape and even his influence on the tides. He feels very big and important until a ray from the sun zaps him just a little, reminding him that it isn't he who should get the glory but the sun whom he reflects.
Fool Moon Rising is a lovely story with a gentle but significant depth. Parents and children will be stirred to reexamine who they reflect and why.
The last two pages feature some discussion questions and fun facts about outer space.
Fool Moon Rising is a delight. The artwork is truly stunning. I think this illustrator (Tom Lively) is a blessing to believers as he uses his obvious talent for God's glory.
I am a member of Crossway's Homeschool Book Review Program. I received this book for free in exchange for my fair and honest review.
Crossway Books selected Fool Moon Rising for February’s Homeschool Book Review Program this year: www.crossway.org/blog. In this delightful children’s tale for ages 3-7, author Kristi Fluharty uses humor and rhyme to write an intriguing, sassy tale about the moon, Christ, talents, pride and humility. T. Lively Fluharty’s outstanding illustrations add rich, vibrant color and detail with each turning page. The book also fits with the Lenten season since it highlights the glory of the risen Lord.
The story begins with a little boy framed in his bedroom window, elbows leaning on the window sill, his long-nosed puppy perched beside him, his doggy ears flapping in the wind. The little boy gazes into the night sky and begins a serious talk with God.
He’s concerned about a story he heard and asks God, did the “moon” really brag about “stealing glory” from the sun?
Thus begins an imaginative account about a “crime of cosmic proportions,” a creative tale that illustrates a proud self-involved moon…Full Review: http://tinyurl.com/ae9d45g
There are probably other things in life that you pay $18 and it's just gone. There are also other books that cost less and has a few hundred more pages.
But a book that I can read and enjoy with my son and again gets me choking with tears as I read the last pages is truly priceless.
This book is a Christian based poetic story of humility and being a reflection rather than prideful. Very well written and sure to reach even the hearts of adults
I loved this book. My mom is usually the one to share Christian-themed book buying gems at her church but I found this one in the library and shared it tonight. always timely with competitive children to learn about humility and tonight the fool moon did just that.
