The Iron Star, by Dan Abnett, is an exclusive, stand–alone Gaunt’s Ghosts short story. Released in September 2008, it’s limited to 1,200 copies, and will be available at UK Games Day, from the Black Library webstore, and at the 2009 US Games Days, until stock runs out.
Set between the events of Only in Death and the forthcoming novel, Blood Pact, The Iron Star follows Colonel–Commissar Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only across an unknown and mysterious warzone. Here, they face the their old foes, the Blood Pact. But how are long–dead Ghosts able to fight at Gaunt’s side against the enemy, and who are the watchers? The key to it all lies in unravelling the mystery of the iron star.

Fantastic short story that reminded me why I love the ghosts series so much.
It draws on all the mythos Dan had built up over the years and makes for a great read for fans of the series with lots of "ohh" moments for people with favourite deceased characters
Wow, powerful stuff. After 11 novels with Gaunt this was, a really powerful short story. I'm glad I hunted this down. An absolute must read for fans of the series.
This was a surprising little short story I didn’t know existed, a delightful barrier between the last and next book in the series. It doesn’t really count in my mind toward my book goal for the year, but it reminded me how most people read books. I can often get caught up in reading books that I’ve wanted to for long periods of time but that aren’t necessarily that enjoyable. Sometimes I forget how pleasant it is to just escape into a work, completely losing yourself, without thinking about it’s meaning or philosophical references or theological points or artistic value or anything but the story and characters. Sometimes it’s fun to just get lost in a book.
I don't usually rate short stories quite this high, but this was a fantastic short story, and really seemed a perfect length for what it covered. Emotional, bittersweet, with some quite joyous scenes alongside some sad scenes, this really is a good way to cap off the Lost Arc, and is highly recommended after reading Only in Death.
The Iron Star runs a bit long, especially since it gives away what its doing pretty early in the story (though your mileage may vary on the surprise if you aren't sure what you're looking for), but its still a great story and a really fantastic companion piece to Only in Death.
Having already read all available novels and (some) short stories, this was a real gut punch. Seeing all the Ghosts from the past again... I was actually teary eyed during some of the dialogues. Great stuff. Made me want to re-read the series even more!
Touching little short story that fills in the emotional gap in a big and bloody moment in Colonel Gaunt's life, and a kind farewell to some friends we've lost along the way.
It's been a good couple of years since I've read any of the Gaunts Ghosts novels and this short was a fantastic way to catch up with characters who feel like old friends. I liked the format of the story, it's a story telling method I've always been interested in, and it worked very well here and gives a little insight into what happened between stories.
Second time reading / listening through the entire series. Some books I have reread multiple times. I had rated this with three stars in the past because the significance was lost on me. An important piece of Ghost Lore Highly recommended
A delightful short story. Sets Ibram Gaunt in a oniric planet, the Iron Star, to face off his friends and demons while he battles to fight his own death
