My name’s Sophia, and I write about girls discovering their inner power. Sometimes they’re fashion designers, sometimes they’re would-be pop stars and sometimes they’re spies. They’re always a lot braver than they know, and I love it when they finally figure that out.

Since I won the Times/Chicken House competition in 2009 my books have been published around the world, from Germany to Brazil and Japan. When I’m not writing them, I tend to be at home in London with my family, or travelling around the place, talking about writing. (More about that here … ) As a writing teacher, I have been a visiting lecturer in writing for children at City University and City Lit, and a Consultant Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund.

Occasionally, people ask me what my advice would be to aspiring writers. Check out my writing tips page, on my website. Write every day, and rewrite even more. Follow your heart.

Sometimes I just need some Sophia Bennett. She’s the quintessential favorite aunt or cherished friend that can be counted on to alleviate a funk. Sneaky, clever and witty, she is the ultimate introspective author for me.

At a blush Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings looks to be a light, quick read packed with friends, fashion and fun. Ms. Bennett cheerfully gives us that. The charismatic cast engages in witty and quite funny conversations, particularly over Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream. Nonie is bold in her in improvised, innovative couture, while sweet Jenny tries to walk the red carpet walk as an emerging, yet sadly suited starlet. Edie grounds the trio, focusing on Harvard entrance and her exponentially growing blog.
With three teen girls centered in the story, of course we can expect boy crushes, hopes (realized and dashed) and heart-break. Admittedly consuming in real life, Ms. Bennett politely puts this in perspective reminding the readers that “looking for love” is truly only a very small part of life for these brilliant, talented young ladies.

The aforementioned alone, told in Ms. Bennett’s compelling, captivating tone, would make for a fantastic read, but that’s not how Ms. Bennett rolls. Rather, she shows the side of teens that is often overlooked. Crow, the ridiculously talented, young African girl designer is understandably complex and quiet. Her father forced her to flee the war zone to live with an aunt she barely knows.

Attention naturally shifts from somewhat trivial items to actual issues. The brutal rebel group, The Lord’s Resistance Army is still active and believed responsible for the kidnapping of Crow’s older brother Henry. As the friendship develops between Crow and three gal pals, horrors that were studied in History class become someone’s every-day life. Passionately livid and personally offended, as only a teen can be, Edie rallies her friends to help Crow compete in a coveted fashion-designing contest, simultaneously taking to her blog to raise funds for the Invisible Children and try to find out what became of Crow’s older brother.
Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings was exactly what I needed. The fascinating fun and ever changing dynamics among teen girl friends was delightfully distracting. The sheer determination, righteous indignation and swift action taken by these young folks against the LRA helped center me with hope and inspiration, because Ms. Bennett never lets me down.

This book simply AMAZED ME. It made me laugh, feel sad, feel compassionate, etc. I just love it when a book does that! That's what makes me gush about it, as I'm just about to do!

The characters were very cute! All of them; Nonie, Edie, Jenny and Crow, Especially crow, because of how she was capable of making such delicate dresses and clothes with her own hands *sighs* (I can sew but that's about it). Let's carry on in deeper detail shall we? ;)

Nonie: Pro's: The narrator. She is kind of her own private fashion designer/stylist with cute and quirky clothes! The way she explained things throughout the book was just adorable!
Cons: None!
Edie: Pro's: Best friends with Nonie, super smart, always aiming high in education. She has her own blog about The Invisible Children.(Super surprised when I saw Sophia added that bit! Made me a lot more compassionate for Crow!)
Cons: A bit annoying, bossy and has no filter when she says something. A.K.A: she doesn't care if she hurts somebody's feelings when she says something.
Jenny: Pro's: Up and coming actress, starred in a movie with a hot guy, her dad is a millionaire.
Cons: Whiny, doesn't know how to solve her own problems without complaining about them.
Crow: Pro's: Shy(like me), SUPER DUPER SPECIAL AMAZING FASHION DESIGNER.
Cons: It didn't seem like she appreciated what she was given, but towards the end I realized she did, just didn't like to show it.

I loved every single one of the characters in this book so if it seems like I'm harping on them, I'm not! Just feel like people have the right to know the good and the bad (: Also, I only listed the main 4 characters because I didn't get that much of a feel for the others.

Plot time. I didn't know what to expect with this story, and I'm glad! I like to be surprised sometimes, and this was a good one! The setting was very unique, as I have only read about one other England based YA book. The beginning started to grow on me by the 30th page. This is so hard! I don't want to spoil anything, so I guess I should only say that Nonie really grew as a character as she helped with Crows hometown along with Crows show. The ending was special and unexpected, and almost made me tear up ;'(

Great book! Job well done Sophia Bennett. Pat on the back for you! You will definitely be hearing about me reading the next book in the series!

When I was younger I used to love this book! I used to dream that I would grow up to become a successful fashion designer, have pretty dresses to wear all the time, be a movie star, and save the world of crisis! This book filled me with so much joy and happiness.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the book, but I've learned now that these things wont happen to me. I still read it every time I want to feel like a little princess again! ;) and for someone with so much unspoiled imagination, this book gave me so many hopes and dreams!

I remember we had to write a review of our favourite book in school. I, of course, chose this one! Every one else turned in a page or so, and then there was me... with a whole project on it! I'd reviewed it, wrote character profiles, even designed film posters for it! ;) I was so in love with this book it had kind of taken over my life! I waited for what felt like forever until the sequels came out... then obsessed over them just as much! :D Even now, years later, I still class it, and the other two books in the series, as three of my all time favourite books!

PS: Sorry this wasn't much of a review... I just wanted to say how much I loved it! :) x

Simply my favourite childhood book.
This book inspired me so much as a kid and still does to this day. It made me believe that anything you put your mind to is possible.
Must read if you’re interested in fashion.

Okokokokok. Where to start.

I don't wanna hate on this book super hard because I can imagine like ten year old me really liking it, but current me? Not as much.

First of all, THE Meg Cabot said it was like a "Frothy milkshake." And lots of reviews have said this book is so good and interesting and so on and so on. But here's what it seemed like to me:

1. Gushing over some cute actor
2. The standard and annoying "quirky girl" type main character just being so darn quirky *hair tuck*
3. WAY TOO MANY OUTFIT DESCRIPTIONS.

Don't get me wrong, I love clothes just as much as the next girl but yeesh we don't need to critique everyone's outfit every day.

But also I really liked the whole Crow and Henry thing.

But also why was there way more language than I was expecting. Like why.

With all that said... why do I lowkey want to read the next book🥲cOnFuSiOn

Chicken House

Threads is one of the most beautiful, fun and creative books I’ve ever read. It’s one of those books that you just have to have on the shelf, in easy reach for regular reading. Beautifully and wittily told with vibrant characters that jump out from the page and twirl you around, those that love the crazy world of fashion and even those that don’t will really enjoy this fantastic story, I know I did.

Nonie, Edie and Jenny are best friends, normal teenagers with big dreams. But it’s when Edie introduces them to Crow, a refugee girl who wears dungarees and fairy wings, that they will have a chance to use their dreams, of working in the fashion industry, United Nations and Hollywood movies, to help children like Crow to also follow their dreams. The blurb says the rest, but read it, you’ll truly enjoy it.

A total wish-fulfilment story. This group of girls are not your typical teens. We focus on a wannabe fashion designer, a campaigner and a movie star who come across Crow - a young Ugandan refugee who has a flair for fashion.
There’s little here that most readers will have in common with the characters, but their passion and drive is infectious. A solid group of friends and an entertaining story.

I picked this book up 80% for the blurb and 20% for the pretty cover. 100% worth it if you picked it up for either.
The book is so much more than just the pretty dress on the cover representing the 'fashion' aspect of it. There's friendship, saving the world (well, starting out with campaigns to build schools in Uganda) Nonnie's cool sense of fashion and her perfect narrative.

Africa meets London in this fashion fairy tale. Four young girls set out to change the world one outfit at a time.

Narrator Nonie, is obsessed with fashion. Jenny has a part in a movie, but she isn’t really into that scene. Edie is a nerdy know-it-all. And then there’s Crow. She is a refugee from Uganda who can’t read and she barely ever speaks. Crow has a special talent though. She can design and create the most amazing high fashion outfits.

All four girls fit their unique role in the story. I liked Jenny the best because her personality felt the most realistic to me. I loved how all the girls got along so well and worked together to achieve their goals.

The story is all about the girls and how they help Crow start her fashion career. There is plenty of fashion talk all along the way. Some of it was over my head, but I loved reading about it just the same.

The girls are also raising awareness about the heartbreaking situation in Uganda. I never knew how awful the war in Uganda was or that children were being kidnapped. This book taught me a lot about fashion, friendships, and fighting in a foreign land.

COVER COMMENTS

Girlie pink cover alert! The cover fits the story really well. I am guessing this is Nonie surrounded by fashion elements. I like that her shirt has what looks like a futuristic globe on it too – shout out to Uganda. Cute!

Actual Rating : 2.5 stars.

It's not a book for grown-ups but I still liked it because it taught me a lot.

Nonie is a helpful girl who is very secure about who she is. She likes some shallow stuff that she knows is shallow but she likes it anyway.

"gossip doesn't make life better but it definitely makes it interesting."

This book focuses on the positives. it shows that good things happen to those who deserve it. But there's also a slight problem that I didnt find this book very realistic. miracles like that don't happen to everyone. but since its a good book, I was willing to overlook it.

I also love how this book doesn't revolve around any kind of romantic interests.

Nonie is a great friend.
Edie wants to bring about a change in the world.
Jenny is an ambitious young lady who struggles a lot to get to her dreams.
Crow is an introvert who's been through a lot but she has dreams and she's positive enough to chase after them.
Harry is too good a guy.

❌‼️WARNING‼️❌: A grand fashion fairytale coming up!!

I am absolutely in love with this book! It's so amazing! It's full of fashion, sequins and charm. For a girl who's crazy about fashion and is so into haute couture, glam gowns and dresses, and fashion designing (like me

This has been one of my favourite books since I was 12, and I'm home from uni for easter and I decided to read this as a nice little study break and I still love it. Fun plot, and relatable characters make this so so good.

Nonie, Edie and Jenny are best friends. Nonie inherited her incredible and eclectic fashion sense from her ever so stylish grandmother and her ex-model mother. Edie is determined to go to college; one of her main projects is a blog. Jenny is a rising actress who has fallen in love with an older co-star. When Edie is recruited to tutor a refugee from Africa their whole world turns around. Crow is only 12 but she has an eye for fashion. As her designs begin to increase in popularity, the curiosity about her background rises. Crow was a Night Walker, a child who fled at night from dangerous rebels. This story is filled with friendships, fashion and learning about who you want to be.
I think that this story started with a really great idea, but the writing is sub-par. I understand that it was told in POV of a teenage girl but that isn't an excuse to use words like "mostest" and have a least three incomplete sentences on each page. I am disappointed with how this work turned out.

This is a book from our Year 7 recommended reading list. It would definitely be enjoyed by 11-12 year olds, particularly those interested in fashion.

At first I thought the book might be somewhat fatuous, about modelling, social media, friendship and families. But, when Crow is introduced into the story, the book's validity expands, with her back story of being a Ugandan refugee and her brother, snatched by rebel soldiers, to become a boy soldier.

Yes, it is a highly improbable plotline that a 12 year old could produce top quality designs to wow London Fashion week, with top designer endorsements littering the pages; however, the overriding messages from the book are far more valuable: friendship through adversity, realising self worth, the value of family, empathy for the plight of children living in war-torn countries and offers a positive vision of the talents and worth of black girls everywhere.

I started of the year with a reread. I originally read this when I was younger (and wanted to be a fashion designer). This was one of my favourite books back then because it took something I loved (fashion) and mixed it with something very serious and something that should be talked about more often.
Now my main problem with this book is that it's very much targeted towards 12-14 year old girls. This isn't really a problem but reading it as someone who is older I have a hard time relating and I feel like a lot of girls and boys will also not relate. This is a problem to me as the book is dealing with such an important topic that I feel like everyone should read about not just some 12-14 year old girls (and the ocasional odd one out).
However I did really still enjoy it and can definetly see why I loved it so much when I was younger.

I'm not into high fashion at all so I didn't love this. But I had a laugh or two and enjoyed the thoughtfulness of the little african girl and I LOVE the way it promotes a real charity actually a few of them.I didnt understand some of the things she explained as it was in a teenage girl language and maybe because it was based in england. I wish there was a picture of the girls to help me picture them. They are an odd group. I feel like reading the other books but then I think about the reading this one and it just wasnt enjoyable for me. I like a more descriptive narrated novel. But thats just what I like :) It was sweet and had some good parts and if fashion interested teens read it and start thinking more about poor people in need all over the world instead of fashion all the time its great!

This isn't the most brilliant book ever, but I rated four stars cos it was a nice easy read that honestly had a feel-good factor to it, kinda like the one you get when watching Legally Blonde and stuff.
The teens are relateable, believable, and Crow's sad background doesn't feel shoe-horned in to advertise a cause. Also I cried a bit when somebody actually asks Nonie how she's doing, because she feels left out and forgotten by her mum, and because Crow is seeing huge success in no small part because of her in the same industry she herself is truly passionate about.

A fashion fairytale with a social conscience, ideal for Y5-6.

Personally I think it's a touch dated now - authors writing about refugees tend to centre them and their stories rather than plug the white saviour side of things. There are better books about the refugee experience now (eg The Girl Who Saw Lions), but as a general introduction to "people come from other places" for kids who enjoy fashion and Hollywood, this is reasonable enough and the characters are pretty engaging.

Loved this book. I enjoyed this book a lot, probably because I'm extremely interested in fashion and also because I love Sophia Bennett's style of writing. This book makes you go through a series of emotions. I for sure would recommend it .Though I'm not sure if adults would appreciate it this much. If you are a young adult who loves fashion, this book is surely for you.

Zmedena pripoved, pri kateri sem potrebovala kar precej strani, preden sem sploh ugotovila starost protagonistk, saj je branje zahtevalo precej zbranosti ob meni nepovezanem dogajanju. Hollywodske igralke, manekenke.. dvanajstletnice.. Svet blišča, ki ga opisuje knjiga, mi ni bil prav privlačen, pa niti sama zgodba ne. Če je ne bi izbrala za knjižni izziv, bi kaj hitro ostala...neprebrana.

I just finished the book Sequins, Secrets, And Silver linings and it was a really good book if you like fashion and designers and clothes. I thought it was kind of boring at the beginning but you have to pay attention to it to understand. It has lots of characters, plot twist, and clothes
