Rate this book
BUCKLING DOWN by Moira Keith

Levi McKenna heads to Las Vegas with one simple goal: win the rodeo and cement his place in rodeo history. Then Lady Luck throws a wild card into the deck—Sydney Hart. Time and distance haven’t dulled the sharp edge of their attraction, but thanks to a long-ago promise, she will always be the forbidden fruit dangling just out of reach.

Sydney wants to believe in fairy tales and happily ever after, but her past relationships leave her doubting such things exist. She’s ready to give up on love . . . until Levi walks into her bar. The man who’s always held the missing piece of her heart. Love may not be in the cards, but that doesn’t mean a girl can’t flirt.

Neither expected passion this hot, this fast. Yet once the cards are dealt, the only thing left to do is play them out—and see if they have a winning hand.

STRONG, SILENT TYPE by Lorelei James

Wyoming rancher Quinn McKay thought he'd only have to bide time until his levelheaded wife came to her senses and called a halt to this "trial separation." He never believed the marital rough patch would drag on for a coon's age.

Libby McKay knew when she married the gruff, laid-back cowboy that he wasn't prone to blathering about his feelings. But three months have passed and her stubborn-as-a-mule husband is still living by himself in the horse trailer. It seems he'd rather hold onto his pride than hold onto her.

Quinn realizes Libby is determined to move on if he doesn't loosen his tongue and he'll lose the only woman he's ever loved. In a last-ditch effort to keep her in his life, he offers her one weekend of uninterrupted sexual decadence.

Re-igniting the passion is easy. The hard part comes after the sheets have cooled and they find out if what remains is strong enough to survive past mistakes.

THE REAL DEAL by Niki Green

Willa Tate left Millbrook, Texas, years ago along with her future, her fiancee and her heart. Now, as one of the headlining acts at a hot burlesque club, she looks into the crowd, sees a familiar face staring up at her and her past comes crashing back.

Chase Kiel has some hard questions for the former love of his life. He spent forever looking for her, and now he wants answers?even if he has to throw her over his shoulder and drag her back to Millbrook to get them.

He'd find it a hell of a lot easier if the chemistry weren't still there. If they didn't still fit together like keg of dynamite and fuse. If he didn't want not only his answers?but her heart.

Chase is still certain he and Willa belong together and convincing Willa of it will be his pleasure.

This book contains three hot short stories, all with a cowboy/rancher theme. All three are pretty decent short reads, but I bought this book for the Lorelei James story, and I'm happy to say it didn't disappoint. And even though it was the only story that featured a married couple (okay, they were separated), it was by far the hottest of the three.

First up was Buckling Down by Moira Keith, the story of a rodeo cowboy/Hollywood actor with a womanizer reputation. It's a childhood-friends-to-lovers story also. Cowboy Levi is in Las Vegas to win a rodeo championship when he runs into his childhood best friend Dusty at his bar and Dusty's younger sister Sydney, who he's always been attracted to. But because of a childhood pact with Dusty, Sydney's always been off-limits. Dusty is tired of the Hollywood scene and the women who mean nothing to him and the paparazzi that follow his every move. After seeing the grown up Sydney he figures it's time to go after what he's always wanted--a relationship that's real. Will overprotective Dusty stand in his way? Will Sydney's loser ex come between them?

This wasn't bad, just not my favorite of the three. Maybe I just couldn't get past that rarity among romance heroes--Levi was only 5' 8", and I like my heroes tall.:) It did have a touch of suspense and a rather sweet ending that I enjoyed.

The Real Deal by Niki Green reminded me of Rough Riders (by Lorelei James) lite. It's the story of 5 rancher brothers, the oldest who had been dating a young girl for 3 years (since she was 18), and when he asked her to marry him, she took off and disappeared for 3 years. One day two of the younger brothers discover her performing in a burlesque club, and her jilted boyfriend and oldest brother (Chase) comes and kidnaps her to get some answers about why she ran off and left him.

This story has lots of potential to become a series. I was curious about the brothers--some of them seemed like they had some interesting stories to tell. I liked the dialogue among them and the family dynamic. Unfortunately, this story wasn't quite developed enough. I thought it might have worked better as a full sized novel. Also, I thought the heroine's reason for leaving was kind of stupid and immature. A nice long open conversation with the man you love would have prevented the running away. High marks for the sex scenes though--they were pretty hot.

And the best of the bunch, Strong, Silent Type by Lorelei James. This was the story of Quinn and Libby McKay, married for 9 years and together for 14 years (since they were teens), and each others 'firsts'. They've hit a rough patch in their marriage, due to Quinn taking Libby a bit for granted and Libby's unending quest to have a child. Their sex life has grown stale, Libby feels that Quinn just doesn't care anymore, and now for the past three months Quinn has been living in a trailer on the property. Quinn is so complacent, he thinks things will eventually blow over and Libby will want him back. After his brother Ben gives him a good wake-up call, Quinn realizes he has a lot to do to win his wife back. Some serious wooing is in order, and when Quinn decides to step up and 'take charge', things really start to heat up. Who said married couples can't be hot?

I loved this one, but I'll admit I had a few doubts going into it. A romance between a married couple having problems? But I shouldn't have doubted Ms. James. She showed how a marriage could grow stale when couples take each other for granted and fail to communicate their needs. And she made the reconciliation hot, hot, hot! She also gave just enough background to the characters to make them believable and make you want to root for them. Well done!

So, two fairly good reads and one excellent one, makes this cowboy anthology a pretty good bet. If you enjoy the cowboy theme, and some hot romances, you should enjoy this anthology. 4 stars.

3 ½-4 stars – Contemporary/Western Erotic Romance

Buckling Down by Moira Keith is just..."okay". The story was fairly brief with a somewhat choppy pace, the heat factor was much milder than I thought (and hoped) it would be with only one very short sex scene, and the writing seemed a bit amateurish. It just didn't seem like it fit within an erotic anthology, especially one that features an author as strong as Lorelei James. 2 stars.

Strong, Silent Type by Lorelei James is a smokin' hot, touching story of a husband who takes desperate measures to save his marriage before it's too late...by demanding a no holds barred weekend of raw, raunchy, uninhibited sex and emotional reconnection from his estranged wife. This is another emotional, erotic punch from Lorelei James that demonstrates why she's one of the very best in the genre. 5 stars!

The Real Deal by Niki Green is a hot, fun, quickie read about a sexy, demanding alpha cowboy who finds his former fiancée, who left him suddenly and without explanation three years before, working in an erotic burlesque show and isn't letting her get away from him this time around. 3 ½ stars.

I bought this anthology for Lorelei James's "Rough Riders" novella since I absolutely love that series. James didn't disappoint, and the other two novellas were too bad either.

Series Note:
LJ's novella, "Strong, Silent Type," is part of her "Rough Riders" series...it's sort of a 'between the numbers' addition and can be read as a standalone. I'm not sure if the other two novellas have any series connections.

Buckling Down by Moira Keith
In this novella, Levi is a rodeo star, and a celebrity in general. He's just getting his career back on track after too many distractions when he runs into a childhood crush, Sydney, who is the sister of one of his best friends. The chemistry is instant and Levi decides to hell with the pack he'd made with his friend about not dating his sister.

*

I enjoyed this story, but at the same time, it wasn't really fitting to this type of anthology. Theme wise - with the cowboy, rodeo and all that - it fits perfectly, but on and erotic romance level it fell way behind. The other two stories are pure erotic romance and this one is just a sensual romance. It made it seem ill-fiting.

But it was a sweet story and I liked the characters, the situation, and the story. It was an easy story to read, and I especially liked that there was a slight suspense element added with Sydney's stalker, psycho ex. Really gave the story some extra meat.

Strong, Silent Type by Lorelei James
Quinn and Libby McKay have been married for years, and together a lot longer. But things have gone south in their marriage, leading to a trial separation. Quinn is content to wait for Libby to come to her senses when he realizes he needs to fight for his wife. He's not about to let go of the woman he loves completely.

*

I've been waiting to read this story for ages and finally got a chance to buy the anthology it came out in (originally it was a solo ebook release a year ago). I love this series and couldn't wait to read about Quinn and Libby. And author Lorelei James delivered a great story in a short 90 or so pages.

I worried initially, once I figured out the storyline, that this would be one of those annoying stories where the wife is like 'if you can't figure it out, I'm not going to tell you' or that all the couples problems would be heaped onto one or the other. But I loved the way James wrote this story. Initially, it seems like Quinn is the screw up, but as the story moves along, Libby realizes that she did quite a few things wrong too. It was a great direction for the story to go. I liked how everything worked out between them

And yeah, there's some super hot sex too ;)

Rating: 5 / 5 stars

The Real Deal by Niki Green
In this novella, Nick and Hayden Kiel manage to sneak into an erotic burlesque club in Dallas, Texas, but are shocked to find that one of the main performers is their brother Chase's ex-girlfriend, who ran off after Chase proposed to her. When Chase finds out where Willa is, he'll resort to anything - even kidnapping - in order to get her back.

*

This was my least favorite story of the 3 in this anthology. Mainly for two reasons. I liked the premise. It's kinda unique and had a lot of potential, but somewhere along the way the story fell a bit flat.

For one thing, something about the writing itself was off for me. The way things were worded at times was awkward and lacking flow, and a few times verb tense didn't seem right. I wondered while reading if maybe the author was either not a native English speaker, or if they were just a rather inexperienced writer.

Second, the story felt somewhat incomplete. There were areas that needed more fleshing out. I felt like I hardly knew the characters, the situation, who everyone was and all that. I wanted more to the story. Some unnecessary filler could have been cut out for more development in important areas. And also, the relationship resolution was way too abrupt. I didn't understand what was going on between these two, and Willa's change of mind was really abrupt and didn't make much sense. There just needed to be a lot more of this story.

But I didn't mind it too much and I was intrigued enough by the other Kiel brothers to want to read a story for each of them as well.

Series:
"Strong, Silent Type" (Rough Riders, 6.5)
"The Real Deal" (Roped, 1)

The Stories
Moira Keith's "Buckling Down" is cute. Levi McKenna intends to leave the rodeo world on a high note and that means Las Vegas. He doesn't count on running into his best friend's sister, Sydney Hart. He's loved her forever but had promised Dusty he wouldn't date her. Then. It's a tale of honor and maturity. Up against a big brother's protective nature. More importantly, it's about believing in yourself and going for it. In every sense.

Lorelei James' "Strong, Silent Type" is definitely a good description of Quinn McKay. Seems that bad boy has been repressing his inner McKay! This is a sweet story about a long-time married couple who have been taking each other for granted and finally realize the benefits of open, honest communication.

Niki Green's "The Real Deal" is a fun look behind the scenes at a "gentlemen's club". That's the best part of the story. Willa Tate ran off and left Chase Klein at the altar so to speak and now his younger brothers have found her. In the least likely place.

Okay, this was my least favorite of the three. Green spent forever on the build-up and by the time we finally learn just why Willa felt it necessary to run out on Chase, I'm really expecting some big thang. And it is just too lame. Nor does Green explain just why Willa, who is so desperate to be nowhere near the Kleins is working as a stripper so near the Klein ranch. She does do some nice descriptions and interesting characters.

The Cover and Title
The cover breaks the pattern of carved leather. Instead, a nicely delineated male torso rises up from a conjunction of rope and leather against a blurry background of a sunlit background of trees. I liked the raised wood title...even if it is disintegrating.

The title is accurate enough for each couple does engage in a Wild Ride.

Anthology. Better than average anthology. I liked all 3 stories. If you like western romances with sexual situations, you'll enjoy this anthology.

Buckling Down by Moira Keith. Levi is participating in his last rodeo in Las Vegas. When he goes out with a bunch of competitors, he sees his old friend Dusty and Dusty's sister Sydney. He's always had a thing for Sydney and now wants to see if he can make a go of it. Enjoyed the story. ***1/2

Strong, Silent Type by Lorelei James. Libby and Quinn have been separated for awhile. He doesn't know what to do, he thought they'd just eventually get back together. She doesn't think he cares anymore. Quinn finally listens to friends and starts to woo her. Libby realizes she's been so focused on what was happening to her, she didn't see how much it was hurting Quinn. So they spend a weekend getting to know each other again and telling each other things they've only fantasized about. I didn't think it needed the over the top HEA, it would have been fine without it but overall the story was really good. ****

The Real Deal by Niki Green. Another good one, I think the best of the bunch. Willa ran from Chase after he asked her to marry him. 2-1/2 years later two of Chase's brothers see her at a burlesque show. Chase finds out and comes to get her. I loved Willa and I assume this is part of a series because there are 5 brothers. I definitely plan on reading more from this author. ****1/2

The Good:
Strong Silent Type by Lorelei James
Loved it from beginning to end, despite the rather selfish heroine who was too blind to see what was right in front of her eyes, and the disastrous marital communication skills.

The Bad:
The Real Deal by Niki Green
I kept wondering just who exactly was the hero of this story and if the story actually had a purpose, beside working as introduction into a spawning series. The hero and heroine don't meet until almost the middle of the book, the two younger brothers have more screen time than the H/h, the heroine's reason for jilting her fiancé was idiotic...

The Mediocre:
Buckling Down by Moira Keith
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly good, either. Quite slow and choppy with a rather redundant supporting cast.

LJAMES, Rough Riders story: Quinn and Libby are the first and longest married couple in the McKay/West.
We've met Libby and Quinn previously at a McKay party where Libby and Quinn end up having a all out fight.
This book jumps straight into the story were Quinn and Libby are separated but still living in the area (Quinn has a trailer near house).
Quinn goes out to local bar and finds his wife dirty dancing with a hot cowboy.
After Ben (Quinn brother) gives him some home trusts and opens Quinn's eyes he decides to fight for his marriage.
Quinn spends the next couple of days with Libby to reconnect and save their marriage.
I love how we got to see everything is perfect and just like all couples we all have problems.
Great story and ending. Great HEA.

Quinn and Libby McKay are on the brink of divorce, only if they don't find a way to save their marriage.
Quinn pulls out all the stops to make Libby happy and bring her the ultimate pleasure, and to make up for all he did wrong in their marriage.
Libby finally figured out what she did wrong and she tries to make it up to Quinn.
They finally just concentrate on each other and their marriage, and just enjoy it.

I liked this short novella. A nice short read.

I didn't like Moira Keith (the story was boring and slow, and I couldn't connect with the characters at all) and tremendously liked the other two, especially Lorelei James'...her "Strong, Silent Type" is so heartbreakingly sweet, the sex so hot and the ending so great- I just wished it was longer! Nikki Green was interesting- I guess I'll try more of her stuff! All in all: a great read!
