Here is an exciting tie-in series inspired by The Disney Channel's acclaimed show Avonlea, which has aired weekly in the U.S. for the past year. In this new novel, Sara's attempts to help a classmate playing hookey from Sunday School lands them both in quarantine with Alexander Abraham, the town curmudgeon, and Mrs. Lynde during a smallpox epidemic.
5 stars. This is peak comedy. Miss Angelina-Peter MacPherson is an old maid noted for her antipathy to men and dogs, for never doing anything a man asks her to do, for having no tact, for her decision, for doing things thoroughly, for never shirking her duty, and for not often being a dismal failure when she’s made up her mind to do a thing. Alexander Abraham Bennett is an old bachelor noted for living in absolute filth, keeping a brute of a dog, and hating women. What happens when a quarantine keeps them under the same roof for a month?
The antics of Alexander Abraham and Miss MacPherson still crack me up! Mr. Riley and William Adolphus make for two excellent furry sidekicks, and I love how the doctor and policemen add to the humour. Also it was fun to see Anne as a little girl but from the eyes of someone else... and Mrs. Allan, though I always get a little annoyed at Miss MacPherson for the cavalier way she speaks of her . ;)
Not a bad story. It revolves around two individuals Alexander and Peter (in this case, a woman) who get stuck together under one roof during a small pox epidemic. Both individuals hate each other, but have no choice but to put up with the other and their habits.
This was not just a fun and odd story, became more relevant being read during Covid on how difficult it must be for some households to get on being stuck together.
What a funny little love story, you wouldn’t even know it was a love story until the very end, but then again, knowing Montgomery and having read the stories that come before it in the Chronicles, I knew something was bound to happen. However there appears to be no love in this story, and not even two people who need each other. Just, a man, who needs the woman to take care of his house. It’s a stereotype for sure, but all of Montgomery’s stories are. It’s wonderfully written (of course) and though not my favourite story so far, I did thoroughly enjoy it.

I Loved It! Such a riveting tale. I couldn’t put it down. I got so engrossed in the story that I actually felt like I was apart of the story. I also love the TV series and movies as well.
Miss Angelina Peter MacPherson is a devout old-maid and so she plans to stay; her reputation is that she hates men. She takes over the boy's Sunday School and goes to Alexander Abraham Bennett's house to visit one of her scholars; his reputation is that he hates women.
Well, when she gets there, she and her cat are treed by Alexander Abraham's dog, Mr. Riley. She escapes by going in the window. Then the doctor and police show up because the house and occupants are being quarantined for smallpox. So these two opposites are stuck with each other (and their animals) until the quarantine lifts. The dog is thoroughly trounced by the cat; and Alexander Abraham does come down with the smallpox.
After the disease runs its course, Miss MacPherson (and her cat) returns home. After a couple days or so, however, she is entreated to return to be the wife of Alexander Abraham Bennett.
