Touching Darkness

Rate this book
They live ordinary lives, but they are extraordinary. They are the Offspring, children of a mysterious experiment gone awry—and they are in terrible danger.

Nicholas Braden has an uncanny psychic talent for finding things—which is why he's been recruited for a covert government program designed to hunt down terrorists. While his work for a shady controller named Darkwell is leading him down some very questionable alleyways, it's also bringing him closer to Olivia, Darkwell's stunning young assistant. A "good girl" with a wild, secret side, Olivia tempts Nicholas in ways he never believed possible—and in his business, a loss of control could prove fatal.

But there is something not right about the operation. And as Nicholas and Olivia's passion reaches a white-hot intensity, chilling reversals of good and evil, of right and wrong, suddenly threaten their very survival.

A government conspiracy, psychic abilities, and romance are just some of the exciting elements in this engrossing paranormal tale.

Nicholas Braden has been searching his entire life for a place where he feels he belongs. Ever since he was young he's had the ability to finds things or people by picturing them in his head. As a youth this ability alienated him, but as he's grown older he's learned to use his gift to help others.

By joining a secret CIA organization run by Gerard Darkwell, he believes he'll be locating terrorists and bringing them to justice. This organization includes Nicholas and two others who also have psychic abilities and Darkwell's mission for them is to find a group of individuals referred to as the Rogues. The mission finally gives Nicholas a sense of belonging and a sense of importance.

Meeting Olivia, Darkwell's assistant, is also of great importance and the two start a relationship. It's a relationship that quickly becomes complicated. For one, Nicholas has been having visions of his death just like his father did before his own death. For this reason, he doesn't want to get too close to Olivia for fear of breaking her heart. For another, he's starting to have concerns about Darkwell and who the Rogues really are.

After finding Darkwell's secret files he realizes there's more to the program than he originally thought. The program has been around for a very long time and its former members have connections to many of the players introduced throughout the story. After a few close encounters, Nicholas also starts to see the Rogues in a whole new light. Secrecy suddenly becomes vitally important as he tries to figure out if he's truly working on the right one.

Nicholas isn't the only one with secrets. Olivia too is full of secrets perpetuated by a father who's mentally abusive and a lifelong obsession with family obligations. Slowly but surely she's coming out of her shell. From defying orders and falling in love with Nicholas, to questioning the true agenda Darkwell has for his group of psychics. The braver Olivia gets, the greater the danger to her life. As a stalker gets closer, will Nicholas be able to save her? And if he saves her, will he be able to save himself?

At no time did I feel lost not having read the previous books in the Offspring series. The flow of the story sucks you right in for the excitement to come. The story is full of heightened suspense and strong primary and secondary characters. The series' ongoing mystery is original and a final revelation leaves you in shock and counting down the days until the next installment.

Ok so this is book three in the series and I am seriously getting annoyed with this authors lack of creativity when it comes to creating the dynamic between two love interests. Every couple in this series has a strong instant connection and attraction. But in every couple the guy has the SAME EXACT reluctance. 'I am not looking for a relationship', 'I'm not good for you', 'You are better off without me', 'I couldn't stand to hurt you and I know I will hurt you' BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH! And the worst part is all the girl characters are all whiny about it. Boo Hoo. Get over it. First of all these guys are all dumb asses if you ask me and second of all, if a guy tells me this is not going to work, move on! Cause honey, he's just not that into you.

Nicholas Branden has the ability to find lost things and people and because of this he is brought in to work on a government program that can help save lives. At least that is what he was told. Leader of the secret program, Darkwell, is hiding something and it is making Nicholas feel uneasy. Not until he is approached by the Rogues, enemies of Darkwell, does he start to ask questions and investigate further. Which include the circumstances around his father's death.

His inquires land him on the wrong side of Darkwell's wrath and he is now teaming up with those he thought were his enemies, and he isn't alone. Olivia, Darkwell's assistant, is a good girl who follows the rules. That is until Nicholas has her questioning everything she has been taught and has her feeling desire for the man that has her on the run from deadly enemies.

I was not sure about Nicholas at first. In Out of the Darkness he came off as someone who wouldn't really go the distance to find out the truth like the others. But he surprised me and I liked his character. Like the other Offsprings, he wants to know the truth surrounding his father's death and it all leads back to Darkwell. I liked his ability and his level headiness was a nice break for Lucas, who might lose it any minute and Eric's overbearing attitude. One think I didn't like was how he try's to distance himself from those who care about him. He doesn't give them the option just makes that decision for them. I didn't really care for Olivia. It felt like she wanted to stay blind and hide her head in the sand instead of facing the truth head on. It made her come off as a bit naive. In the end she does make the right choice but I felt like she waited too long to make what was an obvious choice.

I was happy to see my favorite Eric is still his sarcastic, brash, aggressive self. I've said it before, but I really can't wait for his book. Lucky for me his book is next. A character I'm not sure I should admit to liking is Sayre Andrus, who is brought in to be Darkwell's puppet but he has an agenda of his own. There are no redeeming qualities about this made, he really is just evil. I don't know if I would go as far as calling him my favorite character but he is one of the best written in the series. He comes off as so vile that you actually despise him and the man is fictional! One of my favorite quotes from the book comes from him.

"Maybe you better outline what, exactly, they consider strange. I don't want to get blown away 'cause I scratched my ass"

Touching Darkness continues an already interesting and addictive story. The Offspring's fight gets dangerous but with new allies they take one step closer to finding out the truth but also run into more questions. I'm excited for the new twists and characters and look forward to the next installment in the series.

Not the strongest in the series. I actually found Olivia and Nicholas story to be a little boring. Most of the first few chapters was a just a reproduction of what was written in the previous book, so I found myself skipping a lot of pages. I thought Olivia to be a little annoying and somewhat childish and naive, but then I had to remind myself that she is suppose to be only 20 yrs old. I also found Nicholas's character to be a little weak and not really worth a book. He and Olivia story could have been a side story in someone elses book. The only justification for giving Olivia a book is her connection to the villian and the part she plays in the climax of the book. Once we got back to the Rogues lair the story seem to speed up again and get exciting I wish the author would have given Nicholas a stronger ability other than remote viewing and being able to find lost things. He really didn't come across as unique as the other offspring that we meet in previous books and the new ones we meet in this one. All I can say about part three in the series is that it did help move the saga along and have me hope that some other characters that we meet along the way get their own story. If she can do a book for someone as somewhat unremarkable as Nicholas, she can do a story about Pope or even Mathias. We'll see.

It is rare that I give a book 1 star. I will caveat that rating by saying that this is book 3 of a series and I might have felt slightly differently had I started with book 1. This is a paranormal romance. The paranormal elements were passed down to this generation of 20-somethings from their parents. But they got they powers through a government experiment that was shut down. Now someone has started it up and is rounding up the Offspring. The someone is frustrated CIA scientist Darkwell. His daughter Olivia has always followed her father blindly but when she meets Nick, one of the Offspring, she has to learn to think for herself. He forces her to confront truths she had never thought to ask. The problem for me was twofold. I didn't like Olivia. She was a CIA employee but she behaved liked a recent escapee from a convent. But I also didn't find the world building compelling. It took me ages to get past the 30 pages. As for the chemistry between Nick and Olivia, the sex was hot but their relationship suggested sweet. The entire book just didn't jell for me.

" He could focus on the future. He would target terrorists in Iraq, Israel…the world was his to clean up."

such a propaganda garbage! the world isn't for American military and CIA to "clean up". your troops have no business being in the middle east. the world isn't your territory, you don't even know what countries borders and territory and sovereignty means...you are the killers and the terrorists.

Some books are good at the beginning and end, while the middle is kind of slow. This book started off somewhat slow, but by the midway point, I couldn't put it down. It just became more and more exciting as it barreled to a climax like a snowball growing as it rolls downhill. This series has been the perfect mix of paranormal and romantic suspense. I look forward to reading more.

The hero is realizing that the government agency he signed up with to help people may in fact be doing far worse harm. The secrets, the lies and the general bad feeling he gets makes him venture forth to speak with the Rogues, the enemy, in hopes of getting to the bottom of who's good and who's bad. Though he can't completely trust them either, it would seem that they too have been tormented and worse by his employer.

He returns to the compound with a lot to think about. The one good thing about his job is getting to spend time with the sweet and timid heroine. She keeps the fact that Darkwell is her father a secret and for good reason. She doesn't want those around her to think she's just the bosses daughter and her family has never been what one would call warm and fuzzy. Rather than kisses or hugs, she got loyalty and honour drilled into her brain from an early age and it's made her repress any desires that would disappoint her father. She took a job as his secretary rather that pursing her passion for baking and she's tried to keep a safe distance from the temptation of the hero. He is so hansom and kind and she's been sweet on him for some time. But the memory of the last time she fancied a boy who her father disapproved of has kept her from initiating past friendship. But inside she is a woman dying to live and she takes the first step by defying her father and kissing the hero.

Though it's forbidden, she is pleased with herself for taking a step towards achieving what she wants out of life. The hero has envisioned his death for many many years and he knows he will die in a fire. He knows the heroine will cry at his funeral and he knows that no matter how hard he tries to distance himself from her, he can never truly be free of her. Becoming less and less willing to believe his boss his a sane and balanced individual has driven him to break free of his employment and turn to the rogues...therefore breaking the heroine's heart with his 'betrayal'.

See she is blinded by the fact that this villain is her father and it takes her some time before she can rationalize the fact that she has been soo very wrong about him for soo many years. He's caused the pain and suffering of so many people and if given the chance he will kill the man she loves and all those who he believes pose a threat to him or his experiments.

The heroine, once safe in her world of mirrors, is now at war with herself. She doesn't belong with the Rogues who believe her to be the enemy because of her blood and she doesn't belong with her father who has been the villain all along. The only man she can trust is the hero and she will do anything she can to save him and change the fact he has foreseen for himself.

While I enjoyed this book I became emotionally detached from the characters because of the twisting and branching plotline. It just feel rather muddled to me and at times I wondered why the author chose to pen a certain scene above the time she could have spent developing the hero and heroine's relationship. The characters spent too much time apart and while they were together I felt a lack of chemistry because of the rush to get on with the rest of the plot.

The heroine, I will say, was both a hindrance and a help to the way I ending this book. I admired her fight to find herself and break free of her sheltered life and though it took some time, she finally saw the truth when it came to her father. She wasn't completely ignorant of the fact that something wasn't right but rather hoping that it wasn't as bad as what everyone is saying. I did feel like it took a bit too long for her wake up and smell the roses and this was why I found it hard to relate to her sometimes. I also found the fact that she's a secret roller derby girl completely left field and without any bearing to the story or her character in general.

The hero was sort of lukewarm to me as I can't say I loved or hated him. He was just...meh. Nothing special. The book had it's interesting points and while I enjoyed it to an extent I found a lot of things didn't jive towards a 5 star rating and so while I am initially inclined towards a 2star rating I will bump it to a 3 star because....well, it's spring and I'm in a good mood.

If I was rating this book on the romance side of the story I would have given it only 2 stars. I didn't enjoy Nicholas and Olivia's relationship anywhere near as much as the others. Mainly because I just didn't warm to Olivia. I found her blind loyalty to her father really annoying. For me she was a little snobbish at times, sticking her nose up at her mothers family. I just didn't like her and their reltionship didn't feel right to me
But Nicholas I loved. He was strong and clever. He assessed the facts and quickly realised that he had been on the wrong side, a situation he immediately changed. I felt so sorry for him, the way he has always dreamt of his own death in a horrible fire. Even seeing his mother and sister crying at his funeral. These dreams also giving him a completely understandable fear of fire.

Almost the first 20% of this book recapped the last book, just from Nicholas' POV, so I pretty much skimmed through all of that.

We do see quite a lot of this book from Darkwell's POV. Knowing now that Olivia is his daughter. We see the way he manipulates her into doing what he wnats her to do. Never allowing her to have her own life away from him. His determination to save his country has turned him into a controlling nut case. LOL. He will do anything and use or kill anyone he thinks will get in his way.

Now we have a new character who we met briefly in the previous book. Sayre Andrus. I really hate to admit this but I enjoyed his character. I didn't like him because let's face it, he is a murdering psychopath. But he was interesting. We discover that he has a massive connection to Lucas and the Rogues (I totally didn't see that coming). He's just wierd as hell, one minute he is sliding down the stair case rail like a ten year old and laughing his ass off, rediculously obsessing about cleaning products. The next he is reliving his horrific past of terrorising poor women before he abuses them and strangles them to death. He really is horrifying. But great to read. I wonder what role he will play in the next book?

We get to see a little more of the myserious Cheveyo and his connection to Petra. We also learn that he can manipulate the weather. I love that he is keeping a close eye on her and always manages to keep her safe. He seems to care very deeply for her and their first kiss was adorable if a little tame... I can't wait to see more of them together.

I feel terrible for Lucas and Amy. The things Lucas is going through are putting a very clear strain on their relationship. He is losing more and more control and is scaring Amy to death i.e walking into the living room (while appearing to be asleep) with a rifle. He is refusing to take the antidote of the booster because it is so unstable, but I hope he get's some answers soon.

I liked the new brothers Magnus and Lachlan who between them have an incredible amount of gifts which will help the Rogues tremendously if they wanted to join forces.
Magnus, he can read minds, has telekinesis and can become invisible. Lachlan can Astral project and move back and forwards through time.

There was a massive bomshell dropped at the very end of this book an I can't wait to see how this new information affects them all.

*SPOILER FREE

I can’t remember how I found out about this series, but I did and I utterly enjoyed books one and two at the time. Then last year book three, Touching Darkness, came out and I just couldn’t get myself in the mood to read it. Closing in the turn of the New Year I finally did and I regretted waiting this long to do it.

Touching Darkness was such a great read, much more than what i thought. I was kind of reluctant to read it, since it tells the story of two characters we don’t really know yet. I had my heart set in other HEAs, so I was very pleasantly surprised but how much I enjoyed Nicholas and Olivia’s story. But enough of that, this is about the series in general *grin*.

The Offspring series is about these twenty-something men and women with superpowers, who find out that their parents were part of a government program and that their death’s was much more than they thought. Apparently their parents were given a mysterious booster that made them that much more powerful but that also drove them insane.

From book one, A Perfect Darkness, we start getting to know this group of rogues that are trying to figure out the truth behind their special abilities and their parents’ deaths. They are also trying to bring down the men that experimented on their parents years ago, that now has re-started a similar program to the old one and is using other Offspring to hunt them down. This series is all about the relationships between this group of rogues and each book is the story of each of them finding their love.

The Offspring series is a great Paranormal Romance series that is much more than it seems. In the Third book some of the questions that have been building up in the first two books get answered and we start seeing that the world Jaime had created is anything but simple. I was intrigued and captivated by this series and I can’t wait to read more and more!

Touching Darkness is the third book in Jaime Rush's Offspring series. Nicholas Braden was recruited by the CIA to find a dangerous group of young people called "Offspring". Nicholas has always been good at finding things ever since he was a teen and now he can put those skills to good use, or so he thinks. After a while he discovers that the side he is fighting on may not be the right side. He has to convince Olivia, the director’s daughter that her Father is involved in illegal activities. Nicholas must find answers if he is going to survive and protect Olivia as well.

Touching Darkness is my favorite book in the series thus far. Plot wise things are really heating up. More information is revealed regarding the secrets behind the Blue Eyes science project. The bigger picture is starting to unfold and new intriguing characters are introduced with very interesting psychic powers. Also, it is interesting to see those "happy for now" endings in past books are continuing and evolving in this book, Lucas and Amy's relationship especially.

As far as the main relationship, Nicholas courts Olivia with tenderness. Their romance was very sweet and not at all what I had expected compared to the other books in the series. Olivia is a very sheltered young woman who spent most of her life in isolation trying to please her Father. Nicholas's upbringing was very different from Olivia's as he came from a loving family and had a normal childhood. The romance is still the weakest part of the book for me because it is not nearly as well developed as the plot. However, because Nicholas and Olivia were very young characters, 20 and 23 respectively, it worked for me. And the plot is fantastic. Therefore I am willing to sacrifice some of the romance. I definitely will be reading the next book in the series.

I really wanted to like this. Really. I bought the first in the series, and gave it 2 stars. I wouldn't have continued on with the series, except that I won an ARC copy of this, so of course I felt compelled to do so.

Olivia was perhaps the stupidest, most annoying character ever. "My father treats me like crap and is doing some secret military thing that might be murdering innocent people, but I'll still stand by him." Ugh. It got annoying. I was so tired of hearing her complain about how her father didn't know the "real Olivia." How Nicholas could be interested in someone like her is beyond me.

Aside from a groan-inducing heroine, the first 1/3 of the book centers on Nicholas not sure he can trust the Rogues. The book drags through the evidence for and against them (Darkwell is clearly up to something; but didn't the Rogues shoot up the old hospital when they rescued Lucas?, etc) numerous times. I get it already. I had it the first time it was mentioned. If that wasn't bad enough, Olivia takes it to the extreme, refusing to believe there could be any truth to the claims.

I feel guilty for not liking the book. It seemed like something that would appeal to me, but alas, I was disappointed.

I liked this story quite a bit in light of the fact that it was more Sci Fi than paranormal like was advertised. Almost all of the characters have psychic powers which the government is recruiting some of them for but the director of the program is also trying to kill some of the characters who aren't cooperating. But because this book is a romance there is also a little bit of that mixed in. And it is forbidden romance! The director's daughter is the one that the male lead is crushing on although he doesn't know she is the director's daughter. Of course the director is trying to break them up at every turn even if that means killing the male lead. FYI the director is not a good guy. As the story progresses and more secrets are revealed, there are some answers but even more questions and the characters seem ever closer to the truth. The romance in this story did take a backseat to everything else and for that I did dock points of my rating. The steam factor was also between low and medium but closer to low. On that I was disappointed. But the storyline was good enough to keep me engrossed and reading. I would definitely read more by this author and in this series.

I was a little disappointed with this book. The previous books were much more interesting, this one seemed a little lacking. Part of that was that I didn't think the main couple was interesting or had that much chemistry.

I liked that we learned more about Dark Matter and the man that runs it. But even with all that we learned, there is much more to know. It is with this last nugget of knowledge that it seems like the series is taking a whole new direction. I am not sure what I think that of this new direction. I do hope that the new characters that were around for the new discoveries stick around, I think they could bring some interesting stories.

Wow! What a curveball was thrown at us there at the end. I suspected in the last book, but now that it's confirmed, I'm excited to see where it goes. Finally, finally, I have reached Eric's book. I'm a little scared about Fonda, though....she seems like a rough and tumble kind of woman. The introduction of Lachlan and Magnus made me very happy, and now I'm especially looking forward to Lachlan's book...he's just so tortured!

Now that Darkwell is gone, a new enemy seems to have surfaced in the epilogue. I'm verrrrry interested in this Pope character, and to see where the group moves going forward. I don't want to see them break up, as I really like the family dynamic building here.

Though not my favorite paranormal series, with the Offspring I'm always guaranteed a good, entertaining read. I enjoyed this one more than the last. Though I wondered how Nicholas would turn out as a hero, I was pleasantly surprised. I particularly liked Olivia - though working for the "bad guys", she was led to believe that the work they were doing was for the good of the country. She definitely finds out otherwise! Nicholas and Olivia had great chemistry. Hope the next story is just as good.

This series just hasn't really kept my interest. It goes like this. Another Offspring is found. Darkwell gets mad. Offspring falls in love with someone they shouldn't. Other Offspring get pissed about it. Someone is in danger and gets saved. Bad guys die. All is well and mismatched lovers are happy.

This story is about Nicholas Braden and Darkwell's assistant or should I say his daughter and he crush on Nichlas since started to work for her father but everything changes when Petra tells him that he is on the wrong side and to ask Darkwells questions to figure out if Nick wants to work for a bad guy or work with the good guys that just want answers.

I really loved this book. I think the only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was at the time I read it I wanted the next book to be Petra's book and I was not ready for nick's book. Turned out to be a great book!

I am completely hooked and moving on to the next book. We leave this book with Darkwell gone...finally! But, now there is the suggestion that they have some form of extraterrestrial entity enhancing their psychic abilities. A tad bid of romance mixed in with the intrigue and mystery.

I truly enjoy this series, the twist on how the characters received their powers.
I do hope as the story progresses we learn about how the original psychics got or developed their powers. I also really want to know more about Cheveyo, the mystery Offspring, he fascinates me.
