Love is in the air and Neo’s reading about it...

It's another Fly Guy adventure with Neo at the reading helm. In this piece, Fly Guy and Buzz are out having fun when they encounter a girl, Liz, and her pet fly, Fly Girl. Fly Guy and Fly Girl chat up a storm, or whatever it is that flies do. They speak of the future and the potentials, only to realise that their owners may miss them too much. By the end, it's time to make a promise to one another. Fly Guy and Fly Girl will remain great friends! Neo is enjoying taking the lead reading to me and is doing so well. I am happy to see the progress he is making each day. Way to go, Neo!

I know? How could I not have read a Fly Guy book by now? Somehow it happened, and I am fixing that with the Reading Challenge.

I can see why these are popular beginning readers. The format doesn't prevent from Arnold telling a good story, using his funny art to take over when the words would be too complicated for new readers to handle (wedding, engagement, etc).

This is such a sweet Fly Guy story, where Fly Guy makes a friend -- a girl friend, as it turns out, not quite a girlfriend -- but it's all good.

This was one my three-year-old picked off the shelf at the library. Didn't do much for me, but she seemed to like it, which is what counts in the end, right?

Horn Book (Fall 2010)

In this endearing series' latest installment, Buzz, owner of Fly Guy, meets Liz, owner of Fly Girl, and they hit it off almost as well as their pets do. The ending sputters out, but everything up until then--the sincerity behind the absurd premise, the z-heavy "fly talk" ("Wuzzle wuzzie"), the subtly squiggly surfaces of the cartoony illustrations--flies right.

School Library Journal (June 1, 2010)

K-Gr 2-On a boring day, Fly Guy and his boy, Buzz, amble down the sidewalk, play in the park, and cool off in the fountain. Buzz befriends Liz, who introduces her pink pet, Fly Girl, who wears a tiny bow on one antenna. The flies talk and talk "Wuzzle Wuzzle" as clever thought bubbles depict their conversation. They speak of walking through green goo together, kissing, getting married, and starting life together in an empty dog-food can, but decide to just remain friends once they imagine how much Buzz and Liz would miss them. Arnold's trademark cartoon illustrations and comical narrative will brighten any beginning reader's day, and while some boys may say this romance is totally gross, they will find plenty to laugh about in this funny addition to the series.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

now that our world has expanded heavily into easy reader territory, titles like this are a refreshing (granted at times gross) breath of air from the dull standards. Fly girl almost makes fly guy leave his Buzz...as he is smitten and vice versa. Fun.

This is... cute? Or, at least, cuter than I expected! I mean, I'm not exactly EXCITED about flies in real life, but these two kids (Buzz and Liz) are apparently fine with their pet flies, and more power to them!

The art is very nice quality (even the gross parts), and Fly Guy and Fly Girl have the inevitable "talk", deciding . It's actually a nice change from this idea that all characters need to get "paired off"* in order to be happy... even if it means these two flies are dooming themselves to singledom for the literal rest of their lives, haha... D: (No one said it was a rule that kids have to have pets that live a little longer than 15 to 30 days, I guess.)

*or, in rarer cases, in consensual groupings of more than two, but I wouldn't expect THAT in a story geared toward young readers

The book Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl is about Fly Guy and Buzz meeting Fly Girl and Liz. The 4 of them play all day at the park and fly girl and fly guy seem as if they are going to leave their friends to be together. However, they decide to remain friends to ensure that Buzz and Liz aren't sad and don't feel left out. I think children would greatly enjoy this book because of they funny aspect of flies talking. The pictures are all big and bring and very colorful which is appealing to the eye of a child. I think this book would work best for kids ages Kindergarten-1st or 2nd grade just depending on the lesson that was attached to it. The text is simple enough that it would be easy to put in front of a child who is a novice reader.

First, Buzz and Fly Guy were taking a walk. They played chase and after they put their feet in the fountain. They saw a fly chasing Liz. Fly Guy and Buzz said "Flies are harmless, they are pets". Liz said "I know, this is my pet, Fly Girl." Buzz and Liz played, while Fly Girl and Fly Guy talked. Fly Guy and Fly Girl though about getting married and then they thought about Buzz and Liz so they decided to not get married and just be friends.

I liked this book because it had them getting married and funny pictures.

I would recommend this book because it shows how friends are made and how important friends are.

Miss is really enjoying the Fly Guy series of books and will have a go at some of the often repeated words like "fly guy" and "buzz". She likes the often slightly gross pictures of what Fly Guy likes to eat. This edition is has a sweet friendship develop between Fly Guy and a Fly Girl; they imagine a romantic life together but decide for the moment to stay with their pet humans.

Miss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

In the book Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl, Fly guy and his friend Buzz also meet Liz and her pet, Fly Girl. Those four really hit it off together, but Fly Guy and Fly Girl were way more intrigued with each other. Eventually they start imagining a life together and want to stay together. After planning a life together, they realized they’d be leaving their owners. They didn’t want to be seperate so they decided to remain friends. One thing I enjoyed about the illustrations were that they were so huge and extra. Kids love funny books with exaggerated pictures to go with the story. This would be a good book for a student in 2nd grade.

Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl is a great early chapter book for younger readers. This book has pictures to help support readers transition out of picture books and easier text to read. This book is also short which is nice for kindergarten through second grade. This story goes over when Fly Guy meets Fly Girl and they start to imagine a life together. This book would be great to read aloud as it is full of humor but also great for children who are tired of "baby books" and want to start chapter books. I would use this in my classroom to talk about nonsense words as well.

Meh. I approve of teaching kids that flies aren't gross--that natural things aren't disgusting. But the "love" story here was pretty silly, heteronormative, and predictable. I mean, we're not talking great literature, but this didn't have much to offer--and, ultimately, it suggests that making your human happy is more important than finding happiness yourself. I mean, what the heck? Are the poor flies just lowly serfs there to serve humanity? Didn't care for it.

Fly Guy and Fly Girl??? How cool!!

I liked this series from the start and this addition is fantastic. The writing is crisp and fun. It easily kept my attention, and the drawings are great, too. I liked the message of this story—find friends everywhere. Don’t be afraid to make friends. You might have a lot in common!

If you’re looking for a fun book to read with your child, then this might be the one for you. Check it out.

Wow... just wow. I honestly have no words for this, what a new answer unique take on romance. I'm not a fan of romance books but this one really took the cake for me. The world building, the bond between Fly Guy and Fly Girl, everything was just so... perfect. It left me speechless, I just can't wrap my head around how slept on this book is. I'm recommending this to everyone I know, will definitely reread. A perfect piece of fiction that will be praised as a classic years later.

HA! So, while I liked this as much as all the other Fly Guy books, I totally misread that Fly Guy and Girl were THINKING about getting married etc! OMG, my brain! I was like, "But getting divorced isn't as easy as saying 'Let's be friends!'" Okay, so if I found that confusing, I could see others finding it confusing too. It's cute, but I would probably not read it at storytime.
