Blast from the past... I read this kind of melodramatic nonsense when I was a teenager in the 80s... and somehow I managed to grow up to be a productive member of society... just barely.
2015 Reading Challenge - Antonyms in the title (Love/Hate)
"I Love You, I Hate You, Get Lost" by Ellen Conford is a collection of seven short stories. The author tells about the trials of growing up. The author gives you stories about different young adult experiences, for example: falling in love, going to a dance, and having the worst day of your life at school. The book begins with a story about a young couple who have a special date planned out, but ends up be ruined when the girl is forced to take her little brother on the date. “Liverwurst and Roses” is about a young boy who loved a girl and she had no idea, but she found when he packed her lunch with liverwurst and gave her a rose. “Arnold Bing, The Carpet King” which was the third short story was about a young girl that was pushed into being in a beauty contest. “Arnold Bing, The Carpet King,” is followed by the story “Body Wave,” this story is about a major hair disaster on the night of a big dance at school. Story number four, “Don't let the Bedbugs Bite,” is about two girls who are forced to be friends because their parents are getting married. The book concludes with, “The Teacher From The Prehistoric Planet.” In this story a teacher misjudges a student in his class because of his older brothers’ past behavior. The book concludes with “Beware The Ides Of November,” a story about how a girl falls in love even though she has had the worst day ever at school. My favorite thing about this book is that the stories were like real life situations. I loved how the author made the stories funny and fun to read. My favorite story in the book was the first one, “I Love You, I Hate You, Get Lost.” I really like the story because it was exciting and it kept my attention. I loved that even tho Dana said that her boyfriend Mitchell was so annoying she still loved him and could not image life without him. Dana also was talked about how annoying her little brother Zack was but when she thought he was lost she started to panic. She loved him to even tho she didn't want to admit it. This story seemed like something that could happen in real life My least favorite story in the book was, “Arnold King The Carpet King.” This story was not very interesting. I didn't like the fact that Laurel’s dad forced her to be in a beauty pageant which ended up causing a lot of problems for their family business. The story “I Love you, I Hate You, Get Lost,” which was the first story really relates to my life. Even though I don’t have a little brother, I have a younger cousin who is like a sister to me. Anytime I have had a friend or boyfriend over she has always been there. Even when I didn’t really want her to. She always had to tell some funny story or do something that would really embarrass me, so I really feel like I can understand what Dana was feeling when her little brother embarrassed her on her date. I really enjoyed this book. The author was funny, and told stories that I could relate to. The stories were interesting and fun to read. Each story was about different situations but they all had something in common. The stories all talked about relationships. Some of them were love relationships and some were not. The one thing I didn't like about the book was the stories didn't have a ending. I wanted to know what happened to the characters and if their relationships continued . I give this book 4 stars. I would give it 5 but there was one story in the book that I didn't really like, but overall I enjoyed reading the book.
I originally had this book as a teen, so I thought it would be fun to buy it again.
Well, I ended up giving it away.
It's not that the book is bad for teen girls...it's just that it's *only* for teen girls. Unlike some Young Adult classics that are timeless, this particular collection of short stories is a bit self-centered, full of boy-crazy, shallow teen girls who care more about makeup and older boys than the meaning of life.
The one story I absolutely love is "Liverwurst and Roses." This is the only cute, innocent story in the bunch, about a boy named Howie who has fallen in love with his best female friend. He decides to show her how he feels, but she keeps missing the message, like when he writes her a song and makes her a sandwich. Eventually, he has to basically yell out his feelings for her, and finds out that even though she's dating someone else, she actually is in love with him too. They walk to school holding hands. (aww, how sweet). Yes, it's sappy. I love it.
Pages: 133; Publication Date: 1994; Part of my book collection.
I enjoy Ellen Conford, and as far as I know, I missed this one in my youth. It's a book of seven short stories, and I figured by the book title that they would be variations of love stories. That is not so. We've got three that are boy/girl stories. The other four include one about a family that sells carpets, one from the POV of a girl getting her hair done (clever, fun), one about a kid and a teacher, and one with two girls who aren't wild about becoming stepsisters.
They're fun, but not what I was expecting. The one I enjoyed the most was the most traditional love story, something that could have been a novel, "Liverwurst and Roses."
I’ve had this book on my TBR for years and just always put it off. It’s a short read but I’m glad I finally got to it. Hilarious short, light hearted, and embarrassing tales. A little dated but I enjoyed it!
The best book ever. it is talking about a girl named Laurel Bing who thinks that her boyfriend Mitchell Proctor is the most annoying male. for one thing, he is a creature totally ruled by impulse and emotion. he doesn4t plan, he doesn`t organize, he doesn`t organise, he doesn`t analyzed, he just do it. that is one of the problem that Laurel is facing. Everytimes, he will be acting like this.
On a saturday night, Mitchell decided to go to a rock concert. before going Laurel ask him some few question. As usuall he doesn`t organize, he doesn`t organise, he doesn`t analyzed, he just do it.
At the end they really enjoy it and everything got fine.
i think this book will have been better with more suspense and adventure.
This tried to be moral fables for teenage girls, with a walk on the dark side, which seems unusual for young adult literature. These are short stories, easy reading for one day.
I swear I thought this book HAD to have been written in the eighties, BUT NO! It was written in the NINETIES! BLASPHEMY! Anyway, collection of short stories that could be funnier but aren't.
