The Wonderful World of James Herriot: A Charming Collection of Classic Stories

Rate this book
James Herriot's timeless, heartwarming, and perceptive stories about animals and people have charmed millions of readers around the world, and millions more have watched the popular PBS series All Creatures Great and Small , which is based on his four books. The Wonderful World of James Herriot excerpts the best of his stories to shape the larger tale of his life, his family, and his world, illustrated with evocative drawings and family photographs, including a special introduction written by his two children Rosie Page and Jim Wight.

With astute observations and boundless humor, Herriot captures the spirit of the Yorkshire Dales and of rural communities on the cusp of change, before tractors and machines had taken over and modern medicines and antibiotics transformed veterinary work. Herriot's unforgettable portraits of farm animals and the people he served as a country veterinarian are moving, dramatic, warm, touching, and profound. This beautiful book is the perfect gift for Herriot readers of all ages.

James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS also known as Alf Wight, an English veterinary surgeon and writer. Wight is best known for his semi-autobiographical stories, often referred to collectively as All Creatures Great and Small, a title used in some editions and in film and television adaptations.

In 1939, at the age of 23, he qualified as a veterinary surgeon with Glasgow Veterinary College. In January 1940, he took a brief job at a veterinary practice in Sunderland, but moved in July to work in a rural practice based in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire, close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. The original practice is now a museum, "The World of James Herriot".

Wight intended for years to write a book, but with most of his time consumed by veterinary practice and family, his writing ambition went nowhere. Challenged by his wife, in 1966 (at the age of 50), he began writing. In 1969 Wight wrote If Only They Could Talk, the first of the now-famous series based on his life working as a vet and his training in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Owing in part to professional etiquette which at that time frowned on veterinary surgeons and other professionals from advertising their services, he took a pen name, choosing "James Herriot". If Only They Could Talk was published in the United Kingdom in 1970 by Michael Joseph Ltd, but sales were slow until Thomas McCormack, of St. Martin's Press in New York City, received a copy and arranged to have the first two books published as a single volume in the United States. The resulting book, titled All Creatures Great and Small, was an overnight success, spawning numerous sequels, movies, and a successful television adaptation.

In his books, Wight calls the town where he lives and works Darrowby, which he based largely on the towns of Thirsk and Sowerby. He also renamed Donald Sinclair and his brother Brian Sinclair as Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, respectively. Wight's books are only partially autobiographical. Many of the stories are only loosely based on real events or people, and thus can be considered primarily fiction.

The Herriot books are often described as "animal stories" (Wight himself was known to refer to them as his "little cat-and-dog stories"), and given that they are about the life of a country veterinarian, animals certainly play a significant role in most of the stories. Yet animals play a lesser, sometimes even a negligible role in many of Wight's tales: the overall theme of his stories is Yorkshire country life, with its people and their animals primary elements that provide its distinct character. Further, it is Wight's shrewd observations of persons, animals, and their close inter-relationship, which give his writing much of its savour. Wight was just as interested in their owners as he was in his patients, and his writing is, at root, an amiable but keen comment on the human condition. The Yorkshire animals provide the element of pain and drama; the role of their owners is to feel and express joy, sadness, sometimes triumph. The animal characters also prevent Wight's stories from becoming twee or melodramatic — animals, unlike some humans, do not pretend to be ailing, nor have they imaginary complaints and needless fears. Their ill-health is real, not the result of flaws in their character which they avoid mending. In an age of social uncertainties, when there seem to be no remedies for anything, Wight's stories of resolute grappling with mysterious bacterial foes or severe injuries have an almost heroic quality, giving the reader a sense of assurance, even hope. Best of all, James Herriot has an abundant humour about himself and his difficulties. He never feels superior to any living thing, and is ever eager to learn — about animal doctoring, and about his fellow human creature.

I always wanted to read one of Herriot's iconic books, as much as I love animals and all things England. This looked like a great opportunity to experience a sampling of his greatest works. There's a lovely introduction from his grown children Jim and Rosie. Each chapter leads with a sort of commentary about the real life characters that influenced each passage, and then the actual original story lifted from Herriot's book follows.

This is a book that you can pick up when you want something simple, quaint and peaceful to read. The stories take place in a much simpler time in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales locale of the English countryside. You can find much humor, sadness and inspiration in these stories. It very much reminded me of a show I sometimes watch called "The Incredible Dr. Pol" about a vet in rural Michigan who tends to the medical needs of cows, horses, pigs, goats and other farm animals, making house calls for birthings and a plethora of other emergency medical issues.

Thank you to the publisher St. Martin's Press who provided an advance reader copy via NetGalley.

I received a free copy of The Wonderful World of James Herriot, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I love the tv show All Creatures Great and Small, I have never heard of James Herriot before the tv show. I loved reading about the real characters behind the tv show, especially the Farnon brother, and of course James, Helen, and Mrs. Hall. I really enjoyed this book.

This was an absolute delight. I can’t tell you how many times I read James Herriot’s books as a kid, but I can tell you my paperbacks were well-worn. Revisiting the stories was like a warm hug. I especially enjoyed the audio and narrators as it was easy to differentiate between the new background information we’re getting and the favorite stories being told from the previous books. I loved hearing about favorite characters and animals along with stories about the real people behind them.
I think anyone that already loves these stories or someone new to them would love the audiobook and I highly recommend it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early listen. All opinions are my own.

I received a copy of "The Wonderful World of James Herriot from NetGalley. I was delighted to get a advanced copy of this book since I have been reading his wonderful books since I was a teenager. He is such talented writer who could get me laughing out loud and choking up reading his practice as a Veterinarian. In this book, his two grown children contribute their memories of their father. This is unique in some of the book shows his writing through all of his books and then it is followed up with the real names and discusses how closely the book is to the writer's real life. I found it interesting to see he tweaked things a bit like different names for the real life brothers or times when something happened. but it was still very close to his life as a Veterinarian. he was careful to change names in his book but this one shares the "characters" who recognize themselves in the many books Herriot wrote. I considered myself lucky to get the chance to read this book being such a fan of James Herriot.

The Wonderful World of James Herriot by James Herriot is a charming collection of stories. I enjoy watching All Creatures Great and Small which is why I wanted to read the stories that inspired the series. I enjoyed the introduction written by the author’s adult children, Jim Wright and Rosie Page. I like that the author provides context before each chapter. I found the book to be easy to read. We are taken back to a simpler time with this collection of tales. The author’s descriptions of the Yorkshire Dales allowed me to envision them. I could see the rolling countryside with the farms. I love the characters (James, Helen, Mrs. Hall, the Farnon brothers). The veterinarians addressed a variety of issues. They treated cats, dogs, cows, horses, pigs, goats, and more. I am amazed at the medical issues they addressed. If you are squeamish, some of the descriptions will be off putting (I skimmed through some of these sections). This is a lovely collection of stories. You can read one or all of them. I enjoyed this trip to the past where you can see Herriot’s love for people and animals.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF JAMES HERRIOT
by James Herriot

This is an exciting autobiography book composed of James Herriot's many adventures as a rural veterinarian and his children's memories of different escapades.

Since I own several of his books, I knew this book would also be enjoyable. Highly recommend it.

James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred "Alf" Wight. He often went beyond the call of duty to take care of a sick or injured animal, such was his love for God's creatures.

I really wanted to love this. It's clear the people who pulled it together had great love and respect for Dr. Wight. But the stories sometimes feel unfinished (how did the vet cure the persistent mastitis? The punchline was that the gentle daughter Olivia took up all the milking, and that bit of info that illustrated his brilliance and resolved the whole matter was inexplicably omitted). What could have been a joyful celebration of the life of one of our most beloved authors turned into a choppy slog that at the same time felt padded and incomplete. Maybe a good editor could have rewoven the facts and stories into a smoother and more cohesive whole, but as it stands, only the most diehard fans will make it through this one. There are genuine nuggets scattered throughout that will make it worth your while, but you are going to have to sift through quite a bit of chaff to find them.

I’m a big fan of two British series, “All Creatures Great and Small,” the older one from 1978 and the new, beautiful 2020 remake (with the fourth season coming in January 2024.) Of course, when I saw an audiobook, “The Wonderful World of James Herriot,” a collection of original stories, I immediately wanted to listen to it. The audiobook is a special treat for TV series fans like myself because the parts of James are read by Nicholas Ralph, who plays James. His excellent interpretation makes listening to the stories especially enjoyable. I often smiled at James’s encounters with the animals and their owners. Other times, I was very touched and even shed a tear or two, hearing about the beautiful attachment that many tough Yorkshire farmers formed with the farm animals, for example, allowing a cow to retire on the farm long after her milk production years were over or mourning after a beloved cat. Behind the tough exterior, there was genuine affection and warmth.

The descriptive parts, which offer a timeline context, are read by Anna Madeley, who plays Mrs. Hall in the 2020 TV series. Her short introductions helped me realize when the events happened, and I really appreciated it. The author’s daughter, Rosie Page, reads an introduction, recalling her father’s work as a veterinarian and his writing – something he loved doing. The stories that were based on his experience and encounters turned out to be loved by many people, translated into numerous languages and read by generations.   Entering the world of James Herriot is an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. I’m sure we need his stories now more than ever.

I vaguely remember my parents watching the "All Creatures Great and Small" tv series. That memory led me to James Herriot’s books, which were like a warm hug, full of the daily difficulties and joys of being primarily a large animal vet in the Yorkshire countryside from shortly before WWII to the man’s retirement.

Consequently, I was immediately drawn to this book, and I’m so glad I read it. It opens with an introduction by James Herriot’s, or really Alf Wight’s, two children, Rosie Page and James Wight, fondly remembering their father as he ministered to his patients, and got to know the farmers in the area.

Though Alf Wight used a pen name and changed the names of the local farmers and their animals, his local readers greatly enjoyed their vet’s stories about his work. Over the years, Wight’s stories’ popularity spread far and wide, and gained this quiet man fame and recognition.

In this book, which is a retrospective of Wight’s life, the material is organized in categories, so each chapter covers things such as the Yorkshire Dales, Wight’s business partner, how Wight came to settle in the area and raise his family, the farmers and their temperaments and superstitions, and the different creatures he treated over the years. There are snippets from Wight’s writings from different books different years in each chapter illustrating each point with Herriot’s gentle humour and kindness.

I particularly loved the context provided in each chapter, noting who Wight was actually writing about, as well as the changing society of the Yorkshire Dales or veterinary practices of the period. The medical science of treating animals changed quite a lot over the time Wight practiced, and there is some sense also how dangerous and rewarding Alf found spending time caring for his patients.

This was a lovely book, and well worth your time if you enjoyed his books, or the more recent tv series based on Alf Wight’s memoirs.

Thank you to Netgalley and to St. Martin’s Press for this ARC in exchange for my review.

Breath of fresh air and charming, charming, charming! The Wonderful World of James Herriot is a joyful look at the behind-the-scenes life of James Alfred Wigh, pen named James Herriot. Told in the voice of James Alf Wight's daughter, Rosie Page. Listening to the story in her voice gave the audiobook a special personal feel, "dad used to say...". It was such a pleasure to hear the stories of the real-life antics of veterinarian James Wight along with the cases he encountered both animals and quirky people. A flashback to childhood that felt simple and quaint. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the idyllic Yorkshire Dales.
It's interesting to me that some reviewers mention the Masterpiece TV series "All Creatures Great and Small" as their introduction to James Herriot. Perhaps now is good time to reintroduce the entire book series to a younger audience?
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing an audio-arc copy for my review. I loved it so much I ordered the book from Amazon to add to my collection.

I will forever love anything to do with James Herriot. The Wonderful World of James Herriot shares some of the best of the stories from the Dales and beyond, interspersed with insight into the life and inspiration of James Wight from his children Jim and Rosie. This was a delight to read, and, even if like me you've read all the Herriot books multiple times, this book is still worth checking out for a glimpse into our favorite vet's life.

Whenever I'm asked to recommend a general reading book by anyone of any age, I always ask, Have you read the James Herriot books? I have yet to have anyone tell me I steered them wrong. I was 40+ years younger when I fisrt read them but I reread them any time I need a redeeming story of what the world should be like. This book of short stories is wonderful. I will be gifting it to several people this year so they can feel good too.

A good read, gentle, funny, sad at times and a look at life in a farming community. Being born in 1951 and growing up on a farm, I could relate to so much of it. So many stories about life, animals, families, cars and different vet challenges - well worth the readm

I really enjoyed learning about the man behind the stories from his daughter. But tbh, I didn't finish because it was a really long audiobook. It wasn't boring, but so thorough. I think it rehashed every single story Herriot ever told.

People have told me for years that I should read James Herriot's books, but it took the Masterpiece TV show before I understood how much I had been missing out. I was able to listen to the audiobook of this title, which is read by actors Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley from the current TV show, and thoroughly enjoyed it. This book intersperses beloved stories from Herriot's books with behind the scenes info on Alf White (the actual vet behind the fictionalized Herriot) and his real life. I'll definitely have to read a real Herriot book soon, but this was a great introduction to his writing style.

I don’t consider myself squeamish, but it made me squeamish to read about feeling around inside a cow’s uterus, putting your arm up a pig’s rectum, and chopping stillborn calves’ heads off 😭🫠

Listened on audiobook. Had 1.5 hours left of a 12 (!!) hour book, so calling it finished.

Calling all fans of the BBC's All Creatures Great and Small!
This charming, heartwarming book released today! I got hold of an ARC to read in advance, and I fully recommend it. I listened to the audiobook, which the stars of the show read, and listening to "James's voice" read the stories warmed my soul.
This book combines all of James Herriot's autobiographical fiction about his life as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales with the true story of his life, so it reads more like a topical memoir.
For anyone who loves the show but doesn't think she'll read all 7 of his books, this would be a great place to start. It would also be a lovely Christmas gift for anyone who loves the tv show, animals, British history/historical fiction, or wholesome wonder at days gone by 😇

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC of this book. I could not have enjoyed it more. Whereas I thought it would be a simple "best of" compilation, it was so much more than that. It was a divine journey through some of my favorite stories, with real life background and history of the actual characters and locations on whom the stories were based. All thanks to Alf White (Jim Herriot) and his children Jim and Rosie. This is a can't miss!

For those who are already familiar with the Herriot books or the Television series (All Creatures Great and Small), this provides an excellent companion volume that relates how the real life author, James Alfred Wight, drew inspiration from his own life and experience to imbue realism and delight into his stories.
I found the volume to provide a quick, accessible entry point into Herriot's world without having to read all 10 of the Herriot published novels. At times the jumps back and forth between story snippets and commentary could be distracting, but overall I feel a much closer connection to the Dales and the world of Wight as a result. Definitely a fun read.

I won this as a Goodreads Giveaway.

It all started with a dog.

As a child, James Herriot, real name James Alfred "Alf" Wight, fell in love with an Irish Setter puppy and without knowing it, his future was set. As he matured, he had dreams of becoming a small animal vet, working in a nice, neat office with small animal patients. It didn't quite turn out that way. This is his story, and a delight it is, with added "the rest of the story".

If you're a long-time Herriot fan you're going to love this book after one look at the cover. If you're new to Herriot, you're in for a treat after giving in to the enticement of that quaint, dreamy cover. Trust me, you'll enjoy riding along those bumpy, muddy, occasionally flooded back country roads with James Herriot, the pen name he chose to write under, as you get to not only meet the characters of the original books but learn about the real people behind them. Whoever told him he'd never get rich as a country vet but have a life full of endless variety and interest was right. Even better, he eventually chose to share that life with us.

Interspersed with Herriot's original words, we get the background to these stories. With an introduction by his daughter and son, we meet the real people behind the pages and it was a delight to do so, even the cranky ones. There's a decency to them that is hard to miss. While not in sequential order, it's easy to follow Herriot's path from puppy-loving boy to the man, vet, and father he eventually became. I loved the stories where his children joined him on his visits, feeling his panic when, say, an angry, hurting animal nearly injured one of them. His love and respect for the animals he tended seemed to have passed to them as his son joined him as a vet and his daughter became a human doctor. Quite a lovely legacy of caring.

Oh, so many stories I'd love to share but I don't want to ruin one moment of your own enjoyment as you read this book. It truly was a "charming" story and discovering more about James Herriot the man and those he lived among was intriguing. I mean, the man visited Russia as part of a British Ministry of Agriculture at a time the Cold War was getting colder and, oh, yeah, there was his stint in the RAF. Heck, he even met his wife through a vet call. Seriously, this book was like time traveling back to a time and place where local pubs and a roaring fire were considered good entertainment. A time when you had to get yourself unstuck from a muddy/flooded road because there were no cell phones. No AAA even if there had been. A time when his daughter took greater delight in being able to identify birds and wildflowers than staying at home. Herriot's affection for both man and beast shines through throughout and I thank #NetGalley and #StMartin'sPress for allowing me this sneak peek into his life. Something tells me there will be a few well-loved Herriot books coming home with me from my next library trip.

The Wonderful World of James Herriot – by James Herriot – Enjoyable, Interesting, Memorable and Lovable Characters

When I saw that The Wonderful World of James Herriot audio book was available to listen to on NetGalley I was excited at this opportunity. As the subtitle says this book truly is A Charming Collection of Classic Stories by James Herriot.

I remember discovering James Herriot novels back in the 1970’s when I was in high school and reading All Creatures Great and Small. More recently watching the beloved PBS television show of the same name.

The audio book was quite lovely. It was made more special with the narration by Anna Madeley, Nicholas Ralph, and Rosie Page. You will recognize the voices of Anna and Nicholas who play characters on the PBS show All Creatures Great and Small. They do a fantastic job in bringing these stories to life. Dr. Rosie Page is the daughter of Alf Wight, better known by his penname James Herriot.

You know a book is good when you are interested from the get go as Rosie narrates the book’s introduction. It was fascinating to learn how Alf came to write his stories and the books that have become a treasure to so many.

This book made me laugh and cry. I appreciated the love and compassion that James (Alf) showed to the animals he cared for and the people who owned them. People from all walks of life, interesting and memorable characters, and animals.

Some of the stories go into detail about the ailments and treatment of the animals. You may not want to have young children listen to or read the book, but wait until they are a little older.

I greatly enjoyed The Wonderful World of James Herriot. It was delightful as an audio book and one I would like to listen to or read again. It is the kind of book I would want to come back and listen to or read all over again, and share with others.

The Wonderful World of James Herriot would make a perfect Christmas or birthday gift for family and friends, or even for yourself. If you are familiar with the James Herriot books, it will likely make you want to go back reread his novels.

I would like to thank Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to the audio book The Wonderful World of James Herriot by James Herriot. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this audio book and was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

James Herriot’s classic books of life as a Yorkshire vet have gained a new following with the popularity of the new television series. While the original stories are charming in their own right, The Wonderful World of James Herriot provides context and comparisons between the original texts and that of Alf Wight, the man behind the stories.

With an introduction by his children (and on audio, the intro is read by his daughter, Rosie), this new volume will be sure to delight fans of the original books. Many of the most popular stories (and ones depicted in the new series) are repeated here, but then the “real” story follows. For those not familiar, James Herriot was a construct of the author and some of the stories actually came from his son’s time as a vet as well as his own. Siegfried and Tristan existed in real life, but their real names were Donald and Brian. While some say Wight exaggerated the characteristics of people like Siegfried, while others say he toned down the personalities.

Nearly all the stories have some basis in the truth, much like Laura Ingalls Wilder books, yet they are considered fiction. And that’s what’s so great about this new compilation of stories. Side by side comparisons are made between the fiction of the story, and what really happened. If you’re wondering which book a particular story came from, it’s provided, although by using the original book names and not the names of the compilations released in the United States. I always wanted to research Wight’s real life and wondered which stories were true or not but never got around to it, so this volume was a welcome addition to the library.

If you love the television series as much as I do, be sure to check out this book on audio, as Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley provide the narration. It’s a great way to get for Americans to get their “fix” of stories until season 4 premieres on PBS on January 7, 2024.

I've read all the James Herriot books. . .at church we'd often sing this song [I'm humming it as I write this]:

All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all. . .

He gave us eyes to see them
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty
Who has made all things well

The actual reading of the books started when my Dad came home on my Mother's birthday in 1972 and handed her a brand spanking new copy of All Creatures Great and Small. She was a habitual night owl, reading into the night after she'd put all of us to bed, and when I (who was also a bedtime reader) came through to the kitchen to get a glass of water, she pulled me over and showed me the book, and promised I could read it next. Thus began my obsession with all things Herriot. Our family continued reading the books and watching Herriot stories when PBS / BBC shows became available. Herriot stories mean home to me, bringing me back to my natal family at the simple turn of a page. . .

Over the years Herriot Fandom has learned more about the family, the place, the work and turned Alf Wight's extraordinary life into a tourist destination. God Bless his family for not shutting it all down when they easily could have, but rather embracing and controlling the business, books and their father's legacy allowed us into this sanctuary. It must get tiresome at times, but truly, how many new up-and-coming veterinarians were inspired by these shows? Or animal rights efforts strengthened because of the mighty kindnesses, gentle patient caregiving to the abused and abusing - helping whole communities change their minds? Or just letting us laugh out loud at the working life. Thank you to the Wight clan for your many generosities, this new book being one of them.

It was an absolute delight to read, and be close to the Dales again, and happily humming.

*A sincere thank you to James Herriot, Rosie Page, Macmillan Audio, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC to read and independently review.*

Loved The Wonderful World of James Herriot!

Admittedly I've only read All Creatures Great and Small (which in US combined James Herriot's first two novels) and All Things Bright and Beautiful (which combined the second two novels). If read subsequent books by James Herriot, I neglected to capture them on GoodReads.

The version of The Wonderful World reviewed was the audio version, which captures clips of prior audio segments and interweaves them with narrative that explains how the novels relate to the actual experiences of the actual veterinarian surgeon James Alfred Wight. The book provides comparison to stories in the books and then provides many names of the actual patients and their owners; and often how the owners responded to "Alf" once the books were published.

Twice a week fans were able to meet the author in person and line up around the block for autographs and to shake his hand.

Personally I like books to progress sequentially, but this book jumped around a bit because it was organized by topic. It didn't bother me to a huge extent. There was a little bit of overlap at times. Maybe that will be ironed out as I reviewed "the advance release audio" version.

Overall, the book was about 12.25 hours long and I just loved it. Since I had only read the first two US novels (or the first 4 books), I always wondered what happened once the good (vet) doctor had gone off to war. Well ... now I know. If you've loved any of James Herriot's prior books (and really, who hasn't), don't miss this one!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advance release copy of the audiobook available in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for approving my NetGalley request.

I listened to the audiobook of this title, narrated by a delightful cast, some of whom are in the latest PBS rendition of the James Herriot books. Both the writing and the narration were excellent as it follows the experiences of a young man beginning his career as a veterinarian, and how he deals with the animals, large and small, his partners, and the farmers in his practice.

This is a book that looks at the history behind Herriot’s fiction. It takes some of the characters and scenes from Herriot’s books and shows the real people and situations behind them. Both fiction and real-life are entertaining and informative. It was fun to listen to how the real man behind Herriot, James Alfred Wight, came to the English Dales and learned how to fit into the Yorkshire community. It also brings Alf’s partners and friends into the story and gives some background information on them. The audiobook begins just prior to WWII and continues into the 1990s.

I found this a wonderful, calming listen in these times of unrest around the world. It felt like going back to a simpler time with, generally, kinder people. Of course, all times have their share of grumps and grouches, and the book doesn’t ignore them, but overall, this book offers a pastoral sentiment to the lives of the veterinarians and the Dales’ community of the time. I can honestly say that I wish that there were even more stories included in the book. Perhaps there will be a second volume? That would be nice.

I received an advanced reader copy of this audiobook from the publisher through NetGalley. I thank all involved for their generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to listening to this book.

I grew up reading all of James Herriot books and I won a Goodreads giveaway for this book. On Net Galley I saw the book as an audiobook and I had to listen to it as well. As I was listening to the first few minutes, I recognized the narrators' voices. Looked them up and sure enough, they are the actors that play James Herriot and Mrs. Hall on the PBS Masterpiece show, Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley. They are marvelous in narrating the numerous stories of James, the Dales, and the veterinary practice. Having them as the narrators adds to this book and I couldn't wait to find time to listen to the next chapter.
This book is wonderful as it brings to life many stories from the numerous books James Herriot wrote and gives little behind the scenes explanations to connect to the real life people that characters were based on in the stories. It also explains the real men, Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair, behind the characters and their families through the years. The introduction by the children of James, Jim Wight and Rosie Page provides a lovely background to their father's practice and books. If you are a fan of James Herriot, or just an animal lover, I highly recommend this audiobook! Thank you Goodreads for an advanced copy of this book. Thank you Macmillan Audio and Net Galley for a complimentary copy of the audiobook. All opinions expressed are my own. @MacmillanAudio
