Jennifer Sheila Uglow OBE (née Crowther, born 1947) is a British biographer, critic and publisher. The editorial director of Chatto & Windus, she has written critically acclaimed biographies of Elizabeth Gaskell, William Hogarth, Thomas Bewick and the Lunar Society, among others, and has also compiled a women's biographical dictionary.
3 1/2 stars. I loved Jenny Uglow's "Lunar Men" and I am fond of ghost stories, so this looked like an ideal volume. On the plus side of the ledger, the selections are diverse and thoughtful; on the minus side, they are selections, and not whole works. With some pieces this worked very well, but I found that truncation made others rather meaningless. So interesting, however, are the many sources, that you are sure to find something you enjoy, and, perhaps, like me, you'll find something you want to hunt down to read more of. A very scholarly collection made by someone with literary taste (with touches of humor), but not tremendously scary--which has its own pluses and minuses.
