Clean, but no substance

The first book was at least fair & had a moderately good story, & even projected some humor. But books 2 & 3 were nothing but one person, then the other, thinking & rethinking again & again until I was skimming pages trying to find something happening, which seldom, occurred. I read the same thoughts at least 10 times! The end was the only interesting part in the entire story of Books 2 & 3. Sorry to give such a bad review but I'm only being truthful, not mean.

I love Regency romance, but the dialogues in this book set was extremely long. I was skipping passages. No one talks like that!!!

I enjoyed these stories, although the plot of each story is quite similar and you don't have to read very far to know how the story will end.
My issue with the author is that while she takes great pains to write in the language of the era, occasionally she slips and uses phrases like "crazy about her" or "keep your cool" which are glaringly out place and should have been omitted in proof reading. It's a shame because the readers deserve better.

A set of 3 inter-related stories, each book focusing on one young lady and the way she found her perfect mate. Each lady is slightly older than the usual debutante, making these young women more mature, complex and a bit harder to match, all of which make their stories such a delight to read. The HEA ending of each, and the upright moral characters of the principals, make reading these a pleasure. I enjoyed the stories very much, and look forward to reading further books by this author.
I have reviewed each story separately below, for those wishing more detail.

Book # 1: A Forthright Courtship.
SETTING: Duke Edward Reginald, the newly made Duke of Foreshire and his sister Georgiana sponsor a young Lady, Miss Maria Worthing from a Caribbean plantation to London for her first season. Maria’s father and their father had been friends, and now that Mr. Worthing is dying, he wants to see her married and settled before his death. As they, too, are of marriageable age, they gladly welcome Maria to accompany them to the Season’s events. Because of her isolation on a Caribbean plantation, Maria lacks the refinements society expects of a debutante, and the Duke and Georgiana happily take upon themselves the duty to bring her “up to snuff”, with etiquette and dancing lessons. Armed with such strong support from Edward and Georgiana, Maria faces the Season with courage and an earnest desire to accomplish the goal her father has set for her, to find a husband. Will this transplant from the Caribbean fit in with the tight-knit English society? Will she make so many faux pas that no gentleman will consider taking her to wife? And what about Edward and Georgiana-can they successfully launch Maria and also find themselves a match?
CRITIQUE: Sweet love story where the Hero takes the long way around to discovering his feelings of protection are based on his growing attachment to our heroine. A few faux pas DO occur and our Hero so vociferously reprimands our heroine that we fear all is lost. There are competitors for both the Hero & heroine so the ending is uncertain until the end of the book. A HEA is found, a satisfying ending to an enjoyable story.

Book 2: A Love Worth Saving-Georgiana’s Story
An interesting story that keeps one’s interest to the end, hoping the Hero & heroine will overcome past hurts and resume their loving relationship.

Robert was not of the gentry, nor did he have money, so Georgianna’s father refused to give them permission to marry, even threatening social destruction if they were to marry. Robert went off to sea to live up to his prior naval commitment, leaving Georgianna living with her brother and father. Despite their breakup, each still loved, and longed for, the other.
Years later, Robert inherits from an aunt, after also having built a small fortune in the navy, allowing him to retire and return to England. He expects Georgianna to have married by now, but at the first social event he attends, they meet and he learns she is still single. What should have been a simple, easy resumption of close relations, was hampered by Robert’s bitterness-at the gentry in general, at Georgianna’s (now dead) father and by extension to her brother and even at Georgianna for not having gone against her father’s wishes. This bitterness had blinded him to thinking about the long term consequences of what such rebellion would have meant to Georgianna, both while he was at sea, and if he were to have died there.
Loving, reasonable friends of Georgianna helped Robert understand what marrying against her father’s wishes would have meant for her, as well as appreciate that she still cared for him. In the end, Robert grew up, abandoned his bitterness and opened himself to the love Georgianna so openly offered him.
I enjoyed the story, as it explored the human foibles that hamper relationships, and how love can overcome them.

Book # 3: Love Letters to a Lady
SETTING: Julia Weston’s father tutored James Norwich as a young man, which allowed Julia and James to meet and compete in learning with each other. They became as close as a brother and sister. James, who was older by a few years, was first to realize he had developed deep feelings for Julia, but discerned that she still thought of their close relationship as it had always been-just friends.
Julia has been “out” at least 2 seasons, and her parents want to see her settled in a good marriage soon, as they have both been ill, and her mother seems to be declining. Julia’s parents tell her that she is to accept a suitor and prepare for marriage. Julia’s parents have observed the 2 interacting all these years, and Mrs. Weston tells James that they think James and Julia would be a good match. Mrs. Weston begins encouraging him to speak up and declare his intentions, but James wavers in doing that. He decides to write a long letter, expressing his feelings. After recopying it, he forgets to sign it! He does leave a box number on the envelope, where Julia mails her response to him. Thus begins an anonymous courtship, wherein each begins to bare their soul to the other. Julia tries to discern which of her crowd could be the author, but is not successful. Finally, she demands in a letter to make himself known to her. James comes to the house, she is shocked, as she does not yet realize, that her feelings for James are already deeply rooted. Thus, James does not propose as he sees she is not prepared to accept him. He leaves Bath in a few days, returning to his estate. Will Julia come to realize what is in her heart, or will turn to another suitor? Will James find love elsewhere, giving up on Julia. The rest of the story sorts these tangles out.

PEARLS OF WISDOM: Mrs. Weston gives Julia wonderful advise when Julia confesses her errors in dealing with James when he came to propose. She states : “ That is all that life is about, my dear. We are all of us constantly learning and growing. There is no need to hurt yourself too much over it. For it is not truly the mistakes that matter. We are all going to make them at one time or another. What matters is what you do about them once you make them. Do you sit there and cry about the matter? Do you rail against yourself but take no steps to actually remedy the situation? Or do you step up and admit to your misstep and clean up whatever mess you have made? That is what matters.”
We all need to think in that manner, as we all stumble many times.

CRITIQUE: The storyline was very good, and the characters well developed. The pace was good. I did not notice any grammatical or punctuation errors (a good editing job.) Characters from Ms. Finch’s prior novel make appearances in this novel, just as Julia and James had appeared in a prior book. We also see that Georgina and her fiancé are deeply involved in wedding plans. Thus the 2 stories work together to give us a continuing picture of a group of friends taking that all important step of choosing life partners. This is an excellent book, with a HEA, appropriate for all ages.

The stories were very good. I like how they were all intertwined so we could read all of their HEAs. I always enjoy Fanny Finch's attention to details in characters and settings, etc. These 3 stories are full of love, misunderstandings and trials that the characters must overcome before finding their HEA.

I must confess, I usually enjoy Fanny Finch's books and believe they have all been 5 star, but this one did seem to have a bit much of personal thoughts running on, or lengthy conversations where the other person never speaks but the first keeps going. Not likely to be very realistic (unless people had much better manners back then.) That being said, it was still worth it to read these stories. I truly enjoyed them all.

Three sweet stories but I think they are all a bit too long. They are too repetitive. However, The stories are sweet and captivating.

What should have been a sweet story was made tedious by the repetition of every idea or thought of each and every single character in this book. On the plus side, the editing was great.

Each book is full of exciting balls and events. The characters are so invested in their duty it becomes a fragile fight between duty and love. The characters are so realistic and well developed. I loved the storylines for each of the books. A FORTHRIGHT COURTSHIP: is about a young woman who did not grow up in society but is a part of it. Her guardians are the children of her dying father's best friend. She must learn everything to fit into polite society. She makes a lot of mistakes and is chastised for it. She comes to have a tend re for her host and he does not realize he is falling for her too. It takes the sister's intervention to bring both parties together.
A LOVE WORTH SAVING: It is wonderful to be reacquainted with the characters from "A Forthright Courtship" by Fanny Finch. In Ms. Finch's previous book, we met Miss Maria Worthing who is now engaged to Lord Edward Reginald, Duke of Foreshire and they were planning their wedding. Our heroine is Edward's sister, Lady Georgiana Reginald. She is a quiet, unassuming woman whose joy in life is seeing others happy. She considers herself a wallflower and at the age of six and twenty she feels she is on the verge of spinsterhood. Our reluctant hero is Captain Robert Trentworth. He is a man that does his best to think before speaking. He is a man of discipline and principle. But when he is around Lady Georgiana all common sense leaves him and he feels nothing but anger and bitterness. He had been engaged to Georgiana a few years ago only to have his heart broken when she called it off. Her father the late Duke of Foreshire, forbade her from marrying Robert because he had no title or fortune. Years later, Georgiana's best friend brings them together again and it turns out to be more difficult than any could imagine. This book is very realistic in the relationships it portrayed. It is easy to relate to the character's moods and emotions. I did find myself sighing a lot reading the story of pain and heartache. I found this to be a wonderful read. I highly recommend it.
LOVE LETTERS TO A LADY: I immediately fell in love with the main characters, Miss Julia Weston and Mr. James Norwich. Julia is witty, has a sharp tongue, she is loving, gregarious, entertaining, fanciful and a romantic at heart. James is the ideal companion for Julia. He is thoughtful, indulging, witty, honest, forthright and has harbored a secret unrequited love for Julia for a few years. They have known each other since childhood and continued their close friendship into their young adult years. They are now the closest of friends and each other’s confidant. Julia can talk to James about anything. He does not rebuke her that she may be asking about things that a proper lady would not speak of. They spend time together at balls and dinners. He is well regarded by Julia's parents and shows them the upmost respect. James loves everything about Julia and would never stifle her creative personality. But Julia is blind to James' love for her. James is timid when it comes to expressing emotions. So, when he is around Julia, he is in his friendship mode. How could Julia possibly know how he feels? James has not once ever said anything to that affect or acted in a way that would tip her off to his feelings and intentions. Julia was under the impression that James could never feel love for her other than as a little sister. When James finally came to the end of his rope, he decided to declare himself to Julia. He was too timid to do it in person. He decides to write her a letter. He is more at ease writing than verbally expressing himself. In writing, James pours all the feelings he has for Julia and declares that he loves her. In his nervousness and excitement, he forgets one tiny, tiny detail in his letter. He forgot to sign his name before sending it off to the post. Oh, how he lamented his mistake and did not know what to do. When Julia received the letter, she was completely taken off guard. It warmed her heart that someone had sent her such a loving letter conveying their deepest regard and esteem. The letters continue back and forth but Julia never suspects who really, they are from. This was the beginning of a secret courtship between Julia and her correspondent (aka James). This book is so endearing and enjoyable to read. The letters between James and Julia were tender, supportive, encouraging and insightful. It was fun to read about the interactions between James and Julia after the writing had begun. Julia was still oblivious to James' true feelings for her. What happens next will cause bumps in the road for James and Julia. It may even cause the end of their friendship. What an emotional read. I highly recommend it.

Last Chance For The Charming Ladies is a three book collection from Fanny Finch. I loved the stories. A Forthright Courtship is the story of Maria and Edward, Duke of Foreshire. Maria has been raised on an island in the Caribbean by her father with little interaction with society. He is ill and brings Maria to England to get her settled with a husband. Edward and his sister, Georgina take her into their home to get her ready for the season. While husband hunting, she realizes that no one else will do but Edward. Will he see her as a woman before he loses her?

A Love Worth Saving is the story of Georgina, Edwards sister and Captain Robert Trentworth. Georgina's father refuses to allow Robert and Georgina to wed as he is below her station and has no money. The engagement is called off and they go their separate ways. Neither one has ever married. Miss Weston asks Georgina to Bath to visit. When she gets there, she realizes Robert is there as well. Will they be able to work out their differences and find love again?

Letters To A Lady is the story of Julia Weston. She is a beautiful and spirited lady who doesn't always follow the rules of society. Her father is a man of business and tutors the sons of titled men. Her mother and father insists she marry and settle down sooner rather than later. Her mother has someone in mind to marry her daughter. James Norwich, a former student of her father who lives on the estate next door and is in line to inherit a title. He has been in love with her for years but thought he never had a chance. He decides to write her a letter telling of his feelings but forgets to sign it. There begins a series of letters written to each other but she doesn't know who the man is. Will she accept him when she finds out? After all, they have been friends for years with no sign of deeper feelings.

I had read Letters To A Lady previously and loved it. All three stories are interconnected with characters from all three books getting their HEA. It is a clean romance with no sex or cursing. Perfect for those who love romance without the things that may make you uncomfortable. I received this book from the author for a honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

I read these books as they came out.

Georgiana is not looking for a husband. She had a true love and they wanted to get married. He was a in the Navy and her father refused to give his consent. The man wasn't part of London society. She has never gotten over losing him. She picks the fabrics and colors for Maria's gowns, sees to it that Maria learns all the latest dance steps, all the correct table manners, how to properly sit and walk. Will Maria remember everything? Or will she make mistakes? This story is well thought out, and flows nicely. Characters are fleshed out. Get a copy of this book and come along with Maria as she tries to fit in.

A LOVE WORTH SAVING
This is the sequel to A Forthright Courtship, the story of Lady Georgiana and Captain Trentworth. They are given a second chance at love. Will they take it? Or is one or both of them too headstrong? Great secondary characters. I enjoyed Lady Julia and Mr. Tomlinson. The story flowed. Characters were fleshed out. Twists and turns made it interesting. Come along and find out what happens. See if it is still true love after so many years.

Love Letters to a Lady:
I enjoyed the book. Too much angst about what they wrote each other. Of course you can also have too much angst between couples dancing at a ball. I have liked the characters in previous books. I am glad she didn't end up with the wrong man.

I have read all three of these books by Fanny Finch. And they are all A Must Read!! I Loved each of them in their own special way which had to do with the Great Ladies in each story!!
A Forthright Courtship...
Maria beautiful as she is was sad to leave her home in the Carribean, and her loving father who was ill. He said to her you must go its time for you to find a husband and secure your future. Little did Maria know that she would fall in love with a Duke. And his sister, Georgianna took her under her wing and showed her the way of London.
A Love Worth Saving...
This is Georgianna's story . A strong and determined beautiful person at heart. She helped her now sister-in-law Maria to get married to her Dashing and Handsome Brother Edward the Duke. But, Geogianna already had a great past love in her life. And her father forbid her to marry him because of wealth and title. Heartbroken as she was she left him. But never Under estimate Fate!! With duty and honor being so very important in this period, it can be difficult to navigate society and find love. These stories have wonderful characters who will show us their path to happiness.

*** A Forthright Courtship ***
Maria stood on the porch watching for her father. Although he tried to hide it, she had noticed his health was getting worse and she was worried. He was mailing out a number of letters, but she didn’t know what was inside them. She was soon to find out as her father tried to make plans to secure her future.

Born and growing up in the Caribbean, Maria is not exactly ready for the rigors of London society. Duke Edward Reginald and his sister, Lady Georgiana, the children of her dying father's best friend, have agreed to help Maria to fit into the strict society she will now enter in order to find a husband.

Maria and the Duke ultimately begin to have feelings for each other that they do not admit to. Can they, with some encouragement from Lady Georgiana, perhaps come to realize that they would be perfect for each other?

I love the stories in this book. The book is well written and the characters are admirable as they do their best to follow the rules and find their happiness. Don’t miss this one – it is very enjoyable and well worth reading!

This set is 3 great regency books in one! The first is, A forthright Courtship!
Maria who was born and raised in the Caribbean. With her fathers health declining they travel to England for her to find a husband. In this book love is found despite social status.
In the second book., A love worth Saving, Georgina is forced to deny herself the love of her life because of her harsh fathers disapproval! When she gets an unexpected second chance can she make it work?! This was also well written and has realistic characters from that period.
The third book is Letters to a Lady. Julia who is Georgina’s friend father has suddenly decided she must marry! Her father tutors sons of titled men. When Julia gets a love letter beautifully written but no signature she must discover who it is from. As they exchange letters she falls in love with him. But will she accept him when she finds out who he is.
I read all three of these books independently but they are good as stand alone books but even better when written together! If you love regency romance and rule breakers you will love these books! I thoroughly enjoyed each one. I highly recommend this book and this series!

Fanny Finch is a “go to” for me whenever I need to satisfy my cravings for top quality Regency Period romance. Her stories are always well-written, Regency-appropriate and genuine while still being wonderfully romantic. That’s certainly the case with her latest, Last Chance for the Charming Ladies. This is the epitome of what “Clean & Sweet” Regency romances should be. A collection of three stories all perfectly plotted, with heroines, be it Maria, Georgiana or Julia, that readers cannot help but grow attached too, strong heroes to romance them and superbly written plots filled with wonderful supporting characters to bring about those romances. Really just a series of absolute delights. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. This collection definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the three stories here most definitely form a “must read” collection, and it is easy to highly recommend them.

I received a review copy of this book set from the author. I have read a number of books by this author and I have been a little critical of certain aspects of some of her past books. However, this set of three stories blew me away! I loved each story individually and they work wonderfully as a collection. Each story is a charming and sweet romance about three different ladies and their quest to find true love. Each story is slightly different but each story is rich in romance and each story makes the heart flutter. The characters are all engaging and likeable and very relevant for the time period - both the ladies and the men. The setting of each story and the social customs of society are vividly and richly described and are completely era appropriate - from the lavish balls to everyday life. I felt completely immersed in the era as I read these stories. This is historical romance at its finest. Fantastic read!

A Forthright Courtship

Marie and her father come to England so that she can have her season before her father passes away and is taken into Edward and his sister Georgiana 's home as they help her get accustomed to the ways of society. Before long she starts winning over others with her beautiful personality even as others make fun of her because of her simple ways of seeing the best in others.
It is a beautiful story of becoming a better person because of just being around someone who is so charming.

A Love Worth Saving

Georgiana and Robert were torn apart by her father. Years later they are given a second chance but bitterness tore them apart get again. Both must put aside the past and remember the love they have for one another.

Love Letters To A Lady

This charming story of Julia and James is a tale of one who loves without letting their feelings be known and the other one who takes their friendship for granted.

Sweet romance with endearing characters.

I think what I enjoyed the most about these novels were the strong, unconventional ,female heroines. In a Forthright Courtship, Maria was considered to be wild and uncouth by society's standards. Her honesty and straight forward approach was a breath of fresh air though when surrounded by stuffy English aristocracy. She knew what was expected of her in a world where women's job was to find a suitable husband. Yet, she refused to be any less then herself as she fulfilled her societal obligations. The other heroines were similarly unconventional, acknowledging the expectation to marry well to ensure a future, yet never feeling they were less of a person without a man by their side. Of course, all were assured a happily ever after, as each of our main characters found men who loved and appreciated their wit and intelligence. As sweet and clean romances go, this box set was very enjoyable, easy to read.

Stories are trite and boring

"Last Chance for the Cjharming Ladies Box Set" has 3 boring books. The premise for each book is promising, even though the same premise is used for all 3 books. The promise is not fulfilled. There is an annoying amount of dialogue in each book.
I have read 100s of Regeny Romance books. All of them agree that upper class Brittish speak a certain way. Not Ms. Finch. Dukes are called "your Grace." Not here, they are merely, my lord. Networking is an activity among businessmen to further interaction among like businessmen. I believe the term was coined in the 1900s, not the mid 1800s. There were many other terms used in these books that do not agree with any book I have ever read - fiction or non-fiction - about characters in the 19th century. This hodge-podge of grammar is very distracting. But then, the stories all have the same plotline and so are boring.

Georgiana and Robert

Falling in love doesn't guarantee a smooth courtship. Georgiana had never been so happy. Her Robert had asked her to marry him. He was not a titled lord or man of great consequence, but a gentleman who'd taken her heart. When she went to her father to ask him to receive her true love, her father flatly refused. That shock not being enough, he promised to disinherit her, should she proceed to marry the man. She felt like her heart had broken as she told her she could not marry him, unwilling to go against her father's wishes.
Robert was to leave to meet his ship, having recently joined the queens navy. In all the years since, she had not seen or heard from him. With him had gone the joy from her life.
A wonderful story, entertaining and twisting. Enjoy!

The three books in this collection were not bad, however i felt that they were longer than they had to be. There was just too much fluff and repetition added to all of the books. When one of the characters was speaking it would run on and on for 5 or 6 paragraphs, when the author could have easily gotten the point across in 1 paragraph. The same thing would occur when a character was thinking to him or herself. It would last five or six pages (now i was reading this on my phone so pages to me might only be a page an a half or two in the book) and they would mention the same thing two or three times and just ramble on about stuff that really did not need to be included.

And all three books turned out to basically be the same plot, but just switching up the characters. All in all they were not bad, but i cannot say i would ever read them or the author again.

Great set of books

This is a great 3 books set. The first one is about a young lady raised on a island plantation . Her father becomes sick and sells everything to return to England where he and her mother were from. When young he was friends with a duke that is deceased. He ask the dukes son to become her chaperone. Each story is a treat

I am a fan of all Mrs. Finch's work. I have previously read this series of stories and had the opportunity with this box set to read these intriguing and lovely stories again. This has a little for everyone misunderstandings, jealousy, ill fathers, shady step mothers, intrigue, and an emotional rollercoaster. I have it 4 stars because I wanted a little more romance between the two main characters of A Forthright Courtship but overall these are sweet, clean and enjoyable reads. Highly recommend any of her books.

A Forthright Courtship: This was a well written historical romance. With interesting, & well developed characters that kept me captivated from beginning to end

A Love Worth Saving: Robert and Georgiana had an undeniable attraction and great chemistry and the ups and downs of their story keeps you reading and hard to put the book down.

Letters To A Lady: A secret love between a man and a women. Loved the characters and plot of the story. Very enjoyable read

I enjoyed reading all three books and recommend this book for those who love romantic stories

I really liked the storyline and the characters but it was too preachy and repetitive for my taste. Also, I have started noticing changes in punctuation lately that I find confusing. In particular, the parenthesis. Guess I am too old school. Lastly, I couldn't always tell who was speaking in a conversation since there was no indication of a change. Just paragraph after paragraph of dialog. I think that has to be blamed on the editor. I probably won't be reading the rest because I found these things irritating and not fun to read.

Three Great Books in One

I enjoyed reading all three of these great historical romance stories. First about choosing love over social status, then second chances, and realizing love through an exchange of letters. Even though each can be read as a stand alone, they are best read in order since the characters continue on the next story. I would recommend this book if you enjoy a clean romance with a happy ending!

Last Chance for the Charming Ladies

These three stories were really interesting. After starting the book, I realized I had read this before. I continued on, for they were good stories, Maria and Edward, finding true love , and sweet Georgiana running into her lost love. The only thing with these stories that I found difficulty with were too many words. The explanations and thoughts were too involved., otherwise I enjoyed reading.

Women with a cause

Each story is fabulous. It made me feel like some of these could really be how some women thought and acted in this time period. It makes one think. I love to put myself in each character in the novels I read. If you love romance as I do please read these. You won't be disappointed.
