A mysterious supernatural assassin is loose in D.C. – a man made of marble, hell-bent on murdering the most popular senator the country has seen in years. Can Sandy and Sinclair stop him in time before he unleashes complete chaos on the world? And will they finally be able to go on a normal date, without Sandy's bloodthirsty man-eating demon making an appearance like some sort of homicidal third wheel?Yeah. Probably not.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
My only complaint in this novel is how instalusty it is between Sinclair and Sandy. I don't get it. I thought there'd be some cosmic soulmate reason why they're drawn to each other from day 1 but there seems to be no reason. They just are. Eye roll.
Other than that I LOVE THIS BOOK when I am angry at men I am going to read this. You know what? Forget making potential suitors read Socialist theory. I'm going to make any guy my parents bring to me read this series. I'll buy physical copies so he can borrow them too.
Another stunning follow up in Foils and Fury. I can’t get enough of Lauretta Hignett and this spin off keeps up the stellar work. Already holding my breath for book 4 in January.
Dating with a Vengeance Demon (Foils and Fury book 3) by Lauretta Hignett is a 5 ⭐️ read. OMG!! This book was so good, I love Sandy and Mavka, Conrad, Prue and Gor’gamuth 🐈 There’s a lot going on in this book, someone is trying to kill poor Sandy and Mavka can’t tell who it is, there’s also a stone man trying to kill a senator and Sandy and Conrad get pulled into the investigation, but not everything is as it seems. There’s so much about this book I want to write but if I keep going I’m going t give out spoilers and I hate doing that so all I will say is pick up this book (read the first two before it so you don’t get lost) I’m really looking forward to the next book (end of January) but sad as I know it will be the last, hopefully there will be more from these characters in the future.
I’m absolutely loving this series and this is the first series that I’ve read by this amazing author and I can’t wait to read more. Sandy has a vengeance demon inside her (Mavka) who hates men especially evil men Mavka likes to eat them they are delicious now Sandy has a date well not a date exactly it’s a mission with the gorgeous detective Conrad Sinclair a human who deal with supernatural crimes and this time a stone man was trying to kill the senator but Sandy was happy because she will be with Sinclair the man that she is falling for. There is so much more going on in this amazing story I loved it and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and I definitely recommend this book/ series. I read a copy of this book through my kindle unlimited.
I am positively steamrolling through these books! I love them so much! I'm in the middle of #4 right now, and I am itching to know everything that is going to happen! But this is a review for #3, so I should just talk about that. If you've read the first two, then you pretty much know what's going to happen in #3, but there's more. Oh, so much more, and it's so good. And when I finished it, I went right into #4. Gotta go - must read!
This is such a good series. As a single mother, I am happy that she snagged a Conrad, but in keeping with the feeling of rage and injustice, I am glad the romance isn't overshadowing too much of the story. Once again, this feels way too close to home for fiction.
this was another great entry in the Foils and Fury series, it was another great urban fantasy story. The characters were what I wanted and worked with the previous two books. I enjoyed the way Lauretta Hignett's writing and have enjoyed these three books. I can't wait to read more from the author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I read about 50% of the book. Hopefully, I will get over my frustration and come back to it.
This book lost its appeal when the characters started talking about the news.
I understand wanting to use your talent as an author to address social issues. The whole premise of the first book does (in an appealing, entertaining way).
Somewhere along the way, the story lost the entertainment factor for me. I read fiction because I don't want to dwell on the unpleasant things in the world. I want a break from them.
I want to read about Sandy (and Imogen) and how they will overcome their personal obstacles. Sandy fretting over worldwide social issues and talking about what she read in a news article is much less appealing.
This review isn't meant to say that the book is bad. It's well written with appealing characters. This review isn't really for other readers. It is for the author (who hopefully wants to know what we readers think).
Did I miss the explicit sex scene warning? Oh well. Apart from me missing that it’s 5.5 stars. If you’re reading Book 3 you probably already know how fantastic this series has been.
I have been going back and forth on works from this author for a while now. But I think this one may be the final straw. There was A LOT of bad in this one.
Firstly, I am genuinely offended by the fact that Sandy had broken ribs, was too injured to raise her arms to wash her own hair, but somehow it was the perfect time for sexy-time with Conrad. Who the author made sure we knew had a member on him that was 11 inches long and wider than Sandy's forearm. That is literally stated to that level of detail. And not gentle sexy-times. There is no way. If she is incapable of washing her hair due to the pain, none of the rest of this is possible.
The rest of my issues are more spoilery in nature:
1) It is revealed that Conrad literally has a goddess of prophecy inhabiting his mother. Who likes him and tries to help him. To the point of giving him prophecy all the time and instilling some godlike power in him. BUT--and it's a huge but-- the *now* ex-girlfriend who is a huge problem in this book, and just hiding it pretty well, all the prophecy had to say was that she was going to betray him someday. Turns out she has literal murderers and serial killers in her pocket AS A COP. Instead of doing her job, she is literally keeping these guys on the streets to murder for her. And she's been trying to murder Sandy for this entire book. But goddess of prophecy ain't got nothin' to say about any of that. The ex kidnaps and prepares to torture a child to death to get what she wants. Goddess of Prophecy didn't have anything to say about that either. Or that the ex was unhealthily obsessed with Conrad. No mention of that either. 1b) Conrad is supposed to be a very good detective, but he has never noticed how dirty she is. He says at one point that she has been investigated for corruption and brutality like 28 times? He comments on how that is a ridiculously high number compared to her peers, but she just chalked it up to sexism--no one likes a strong woman, apparently-- so he blamed it on sexism too? Even after the 'I refuse to meet her' and 'she's definitely going to betray you' prophecy from his mom's prophecy goddess that he believed enough in to break up with her over. Sounds like the man didn't engage his brain on that one. At all. 2) The senator gets dismissed by Mavka and Sandy as 'too boring' to think about. And yet, they see absolute devotion from so many people to this man. To an unhealthy degree. Not something a man as boring as they wanted to pretend he was, would be capable of instilling in others. And they see something in his mind that isn't normal. That they have never seen before, and they write that off as boring and not worth further consideration either. But... that's the dumbest thing they could do given how NO ONE has the same thing as this guy. And Mavka has read A LOT of guys. It should have been a red flag actually, because what was in his head didn't make sense with any of the other information in front of them. And they should have been on high alert about anything unusual in their proximity considering Sandy had survived like 4 assassination attempts before she even met the Senator. 3) The author tried for big soon-to-be style reveals that just irritated instead. At this point I don't care about how these other events are supposed to be connected to Sandy's family history or why the Lord Seth guy cares about her family. The author didn't reveal anything useful or interesting. And made more of a production of things that will eventually be revealed later. And, I just don't care anymore. I am not interested any longer. Too drawn out without giving enough to keep me engaged. 4) The romance with Sandy and Conrad is ridiculous. From broken ribs sexy-times on. But especially at the very end of this book. And the author literally calls attention to how bad it is by talking in the voices of Mavka, Phoebe, and Conrad's mom as a commentary team. Calling out how bad it is doesn't make it clever or good all of a sudden. 5) The book ends with presumably Lord Seth responsible for the media reporting that Conrad is the villain responsible for all the deaths in this book, and Sandy's "kidnapping", while Conrad is recovering in the hospital. Supposedly the police are looking for him, and asking for tips on Conrad's location. HE IS IN THE HOSPITAL. THERE IS NO WAY THE POLICE WOULD NOT BE AWARE OF THAT. HE JUST HAD LIFESAVING SURGERY. HE HAS BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL FOR A WHILE ACTUALLY.
I kind of hated this book. And I don't think I want to read anymore of the books by this author, after this one in particular. Do not recommend.
WELL GOODAMN that cliffhanger sent my heart into my throat and my adrenaline racing, I'm also sure I've left indents on my kindle from gripping it too hard. I absolutely loved this book and it's my favourite one so far, and I'm positively itching to read the next and final book. Of course Lauretta got me with a twist I didn't see coming even though I've read other books interconnected with this one, which is why I adore her writing so much, there's always something I miss, which keeps me on my toes. Utterly fantastic.
A man made of marble is trying to assassinate a prominent and popular senator, but who is he and why does he want the senator dead so bad. And is Lord Seth behind sending him? Can Sandy and Sinclair find out the truth and stop him before it's too late?
And more importantly will they ever get to go on a proper date....
One of my favourite things about Sandy is her ability to be kind to others, even when they are not particularly nice to her, she can be tough and she has definitely grown from when we first met her, but she has a sweetness about her that I can't help but adore. Her relationship with Mavka is absolutely hilarious and they make the perfect team hunting down evil doers so Mavka can devour them. Love it.
Conrad has a few surprises up his sleeve as well in this book, and if anyone is going to understand Sandy's predicament it's him. If I didn't love him before I definitely do now.
The slow burn romance between Conrad and Sandy ratched up a few notches, all I can say on this is she's a VERY lucky lady 😉
Mavka my delightful demon devourer is so hilariously funny in this book, especially regarding comments about Conrad I was choking on my laughter at times. She's also very protective of Sandy not because they share a body but because she genuinely likes her and that was heartwarming to see.
I don't think I'll ever get enough of Lauretta's writing as this is another perfect series for me. One of the things I hate, I know my next book will be the last in Sandy's story and again I'm not ready to say goodbye to these wonderful characters, but I know I must. I'm off to book 4 to see how this fantastic series ends. I can't recommend it enough. Go read 😁
This is an entertaining urban fantasy adventure series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Sandy is a single mother hairdresser living in an apartment that her great aunt owns in Washington DC. She works at the salon with her two best friends one who is human one who is a Living skeleton with a story that you want to read about in the books to find out about the Care picture. Sandy has a vengeance demon within her which is technically not a demon and say virtual spirit for women. Evil men. Read the earlier books and you’ll learn more about that as well. as this is a spin off of the imaging gray series the immortal series it’s a story from one of those books. Sandy is recently divorced just trying to survive and live and the avengers Demon is taking out a few evil men here and there. In the paranormal world there is a human enforcer Who is basically law enforcement arbitrator between the different factions of paranormal. He is also a detective with the Washington DC police department. And the enforcer are working together he thinks she’s psychic he does not know about the vengeful spirit inside of her and he has his own secrets. Read the books and you’ll find out about those as well. Action at times but entertaining adventure check it out.
This is the 3rd book in Sandy's series. This time, someone is trying to murder Sandy and she and Mavka have to figure out who it is. But of course, at the same time, they are both required to help keep a popular senator safe from assassination attempts as well. The assassin is a supernatural man made of marble who seems impossible to defeat. Are these attacks connected and will they find out before it's too late? Another humorous, action packed book from Lauretta. There were things I saw coming, things I never saw coming and things I thought I knew but was wrong! Some bombshells are dropped - including information about Conrad and his mother! And I just want to say how much I love Gor'gmuth the cat!! Such a good demon kitty! And now that Lord Seth has been outed to Sandy and Conrad, what will happen to the both of them?! I will have to read the next book to find out! There were some romance scenes and they were a little more extra than in previous books, but easily skipped if that is not your thing as well.
Sandy and Connor have a lot going on. There's something attacking a senator, and they've been tasked with stopping it. They only know that the man is made of marble. There is still the threat of the Blood Kings, and the mysterious leader that we heard about in the previous books.
There is so much that goes on! I dont want to do spoilers but there is a lot more... evil being removed from DC in this book.
Sandy and Sinclair also keep attempting to have their date. One day I'm sure!
We get to see more from some of the people from Imogen's world (read those if you haven't! First one is Immortal), as well as continuing interactions with Sandy's two best friends, her Aunt, the cat that protects her son lol.
Oh! There were some puns that made me snort laugh.
This book does have on page spice. The spice is nice 😉
Its so intreresting to read a present day novel barring the demons, or on second thought, maybe not, you are not far off from what is actually happening today. The religious right does want woman back in their place do it all and work and hzve no rights The hypocracy is sickning Along with the co agenda of the extreme right wing of isolationist, greed, and consoladating power and money in just a few hands, its a dam scary world and a big fight we all need to be a part of With this book you are doing your part. Spreading the word. Fight to the grave, we will never give up. Fabulous books, just the right mix light dark and humor that so critical to balance it all and give strenth and hope to carry on Thank you
What I most like about this series is the author's ability to write complex and unique urban fantasy while combining it with serious, poignant social issues. Throw in a healthy dose of romance and humor with a heart. Dancing continues to try to solve the mystery of who the bad guy is and how far his destruction will go, resulting in some major surprises. Sandy and Conrad actually find a bit of time for romance! Secrets are revealed!. Mavka gets to reunite with an old friend! Dexter gets his own bit of excitement! Sandy even gets to wear a pretty dress! With great characters and a most excellent story arc, who could ask for anything more?!?
Sadly, the series has lost a star with each additional book. I had really high hopes for the plots, but as soon as Sandy and Conrad started "sexy-times" and Cleo started talking about sex with a Centaur I was about done. Too many other plot lines that were obviously set out were missed by top-level detectives and supposedly (previously at least) smart characters. She lost me on this one. I considered a 2-star but there were a few redeeming qualities. Not certain I will finish series this for a while. Disappointing, I usually like this author.
I am really enjoying this series. But this book got 4 star instead of 5 because…
I read to escape. I like the idea of an alternate universe where these things can be real.
Bringing up current politics was a complete disappointment. It wasn’t just once. I get this is placed in DC. But the fact that it was something that is going on now…kinda hard to live in a fantasy to escape when an author uses their books as a platform. Regardless of whether I agree or not.
Hopefully the next series, also in DC, doesn’t do the same.
Sadly I wasn't a fan of this one. I almost dnf at 92% when stupid showed up. Conrad never figures anything out only Sandy does. It's hard to envision him being so wonderful when he only brings muscle to the story. And really when/why did Sandy become such a top detective. Smh I'm also disappointed at their love connection. If there has been a mate bond I could believe it but no. Seems they are in love after 3 dates??? I might read the last book just for closure, but not for a while.
Once again, awesome shit. I adoreeee this series. Sandy spends this novel investigating a supe attempting to assassinate a senator and trying to dodge fatal "accidents". As Sandy and Conrad grow closer, she begins to grow her circle and meet more people. The overall plot with The Kings continues to get more convoluted but also interesting. I think this is my least favorite of the series so far but it's still great!
Sandy and the Enforcer are trying to figure out who is sending an assassin after the Senator. At the same time Sandy seems to have a killer after her too. This book in the series really keeps your interest, trying to figure out the bad guys, if Sandy will get her man, and if they can save the Senator. I am very much enjoying this series and can't wait to read the next book.
once again i really enjoyed this book! the characters are getting even better and the romance is definitely more prominent in this book compared to the others. there’s been lots of detective work in this book that i really enjoy. plus there was several twists i didn’t see coming at all which is always a pleasant surprise. i’m very excited to read the final book in the series!
and mavka is my absolute favourite. she is me. i am her.
Love me some good old romance! Now to find out what happens NEXT!!
I’m hoping the next book is Sandy & Conrad teaming up against the bad guys and to save the day!
Also, who doesn’t love a VERY feral demon cat? ;) I hope we get more of him…and Dex…and also some Conrad and Dex! Because it’s important. I want to see what kind of father figure he’d be.
This is easily my favorite book from the series so far! The world and character building is great for a shorter book series. I’ve been hooked since the getgo. I also really appreciated the nods to real life political issues that are currently happening in our world. Oh, and the SPICE thrown into this one!! I was not expecting it, but was pleasantly surprised 🥲
This series seems really tuned in to what's happening in the US right now. It's a little chilling how closely it mirrors current events. Hignett is an outstanding writer with a great sense of the human condition. She also has a wicked sense of humor. She tells a story in an extremely palatable way.
This is a wonderful story, I have been waiting for this one. I truly enjoyed Sandy and Sinclair in this one. Who is Lord Seth? Read it to find out. I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
