In this revised edition of Paddington on Top, our favorite bear finds himself caught up in seven fresh and lively adventures, taking him from school to water skis and beyond. Paddington’s trademark innocence and determination are sure to delight readers of all ages and prove again and again that this is one bear who’s bound to come out on top.
Michael Bond, CBE was an English children's author. He was the creator of Paddington Bear and wrote about the adventures of a guinea pig named Olga da Polga, as well as the animated BBC TV series The Herbs. Bond also wrote culinary mystery stories for adults featuring Monsieur Pamplemousse and his faithful bloodhound, Pommes Frites.
More of Paddington's hilarious (mis)adventures. I'd been hoping there would be a story about Paddington going to school, and he does, in the very first chapter. But after driving the teacher bonkers, he is sent home after one day. Paddington also goes to court, tries to learn to water ski, goes in for fitness exercises, and plays rugby. Toward the end of the book, a surprise guest arrives: Aunt Lucy, from the Home for Retired Bears in Lima, Peru. Like all the previous books, this one is great fun for all ages!
Despite lacking their most famous player - Señor P. Bear, who else? - Peru played brilliantly in the just-concluded Chess Olympiad and made the top ten. Congratulations to all my Peruvian friends!
I'd probably give this 3.5 stars, but I'll round up instead of down. It was a fun little book. My almost-5yo and I enjoyed reading it after falling in love with Paddington in the first book. I didn't realize there were so many more books about Paddington.
What else is there to say about Paddington that I have not yet said? I love this series. It feels comfortable and cozy reading about Paddington's misadventures.
If ever I would feel down to Paddington I will go to make myself feel better again.
In this book Paddington has a few incidents with Mr Currie and for the first time we get to see a short glimpse of Aunt Lucy.
What a brilliant book--the same as the 9 previous installments about Paddington's goings-on at Number 32, Windsor Gardens. These tales were really great, and although I am starting to get a bit worn out by reading Paddington (because I like to finish a series I once started), I'd like to say that all the stories in this book were quite memorable.
this one has lots of plot. bit too much Mr Curry and not enough Mr Gruber for my preference, but second tier Paddington is still very lovely and comforting and absurd, and just what I need.
I read the book in English but this review is written in Bahasa Indonesia
Fans of humorous tales will enjoy laughing along as Paddington gets into more trouble in this tenth volume of the series. Although loosely connected, each chapter can stand alone as its own episode, making this book ideal for reading aloud in a classroom or sharing at bedtime. The use of British phrasing will set the reader squarely in England, although this should not interfere with the reader’s understanding of the text, save for a few instances. Fortnum’s simple pen illustrations still manage to convey an expressive, endearing bear. Recommend to fans of humorous fiction or animal stories in grades 3-5.
Paddington is one of my all time favorite characters from children's literature. He's such a lovely bear, always getting into scrapes with the best of intentions. I thoroughly enjoyed this 10th installment in the series. Loved reading about Paddington going to court, water skiing, and buying a dinghy as a present for Mr. Brown.
After stowing away on a boat from Darkest Peru, Paddington Bear came to the Brown family. He speaks fondly of growing up with his Aunt Lucy, who still resides in Peru at the Home for Retired Bears.
But we never get to meet Aunt Lucy.
Until "Paddington on Top."
Lucy appears in the final two stories of this book after Michael Bond mentions her in nine previous collections. She does not do much, but it is a delight to see her - if only briefly - after her and of Paddington's affection for her for so long.
"Paddington On Top" is another set of charming stories about the well-meaning bear who messes up with the best intentions. In this book, Paddington briefly attends school with the Brown children, gets taken in by a swindler, accidentally wanders into the wrong courtroom, attempts water skiing, signs up for a mail-order fitness class, plays rugby, and enjoys the company of his visiting Aunt.
Oh Paddington, getting into innocent mischief and always landing on your feet. Another book that helped us start our mornings with laughter and the end almost brought me to tears this time. Such a sweet, good hearted bear that exemplifies great qualities for our children.
Recommend: Any age Audiobook along with actual book- it is narrated really well and the pictures in the book are great along with a great exposure to new readers and even older readers to new words! Hint: there is a word in there my child saw and said "Mommy I didn't know ___ was spelt ___" and we thought they were just mistaken. Then they showed us in the book! I was gobsmacked! Never seen that spelling before and it was fun to discover another British trait that made this Anglophile happy. Story time Anglophiles British Culture study Having a cup of cocoa and some marmalade toast with your readings :)
Maybe because of how these stories are written I always feel like I’ve missed something when I get finished reading them. I understood the first one. Paddington Goes to School was about a truant officer showing up at the Browns to give them a warning because Paddington wasn’t registered to go to school. I thought this was odd and then that the confusion would be they thought he was a child but it turned out he was a bear. But that didn’t happen. The teacher has a stick up his behind because he thinks he shouldn’t be corrected. Then he sends Paddington to the store to get him some fish just to get rid of him. When he gets back, he scares Paddington by pointing a knife at him and he thinks he’s going to put it in him (an expression I’ve never heard but was used by a boy earlier to warn Paddington not to be late). The teacher tells him to hold his tin can with worms in it so he has it in his hand when he leaves. Then he goes to the principal to complain (and finds out he’ll be going to school onger than just a day). The principal kind of brushes him off and they go to lunch (where he’s given food server duty). Then he drops the tin can in the stew. Later, the principal makes up a reason just to get him not to come back (he doesn’t have a uniform). Understood this one!
The next one was “Paddington Cleans Up” I got the gist of it. Paddington gets caught up in a scam. There’s a man selling vacuum cleaners and he tries to get Paddington to sell them. Only he just sells him one and doesn’t really tell him where to get any more if he sells that one. So he tries to sell the vacuum to Mr. Curry and give him a free demonstration but Mr. Curry doesn’t have an outlet to plug the thing in. So when Paddington dirties up the house, there’s no way to clean it up. Which really was Mr. Curry’s fault all along. It’s a VACUM CLEANER! Unless it was one of the newer Robots (which probably weren’t even thought of when this book came out) then YEAH how’d you think it was gonna work? It got a little confusing at the end. Something about the scammer and Mr. Curry getting into it. But overall I got it!
Now the next one “Paddington Goes to Court” is where it all feel apart for me. It starts off with Paddington and Mr. Grubber going to the court ouse for a trip. Which is interesting to me because where I’m from the courthouse definitely isn’t a place you *want* to linger because it’s always crowded so you're trying to handle your business and just pray you aren’t there 4 or 5 hours in a line. So anyway Mr. Grubber goes to see if they’ll open up a room. And this was odd because I don’t think here you can just randomly show up and walk into a room without an appointment or being called. Then a man walks up to Paddington and tells him they’ve been looking for him. At this point, I thought even though we hadn’t heard about it he’d gotten into mischief again. But no! He’s taken into one of the rooms and I swear the meaning of this trial was just NONSENSE. I had no idea what was going on. Then his sandwiches were brought into it as evidence? So, I got absolutely no sense out of this story! All I know is at the end the judge calls the defendant and maybe Paddington into his private chambers. If anything got resolved in this bizarre case is up in the air. The case wasn’t even EXPLAINED?!
“The Birthday Treat” was next. This one was about The Browns taking Paddington to the beach to celebrate his birthday. While he’s there he sees an advertisement for skiing lessons and decides to take them. But he gets in the wrong line with a bunch of seniors. When he does take them he’s doing horrible at the lessons and the teacher is ticked. But because he has the umbrella Mrs. Brown gave him (and he’s holding it) he “invents” parachute sailing.
“Keeping it Fit” I understood that Paddington got sent this piece of equipment that had springs that attached to a wall. I was trying to picture this in my head and couldn’t. He tries to attach it to Mr. Curry’s wall but the walls are plaster so he has to use screws. I think my mind just kind of struggled with this story. Why were his walls made out of plaster? My mind keeps wanting to think that plaster is something you use temporarily when putting up walls. I have to ask my best friend about this tho because he did construction. But to me, it just doesn’t sound like a good material to use for walls. I may be wrong. Then what kind of device is this that you have to drill into the wall? I really need a picture. At the end, I think it said the device was 12 lbs and Paddington only paid 1lb. So was this one of those trial deals that you only pay a lb for X amount of time and if you aren’t satisfied you get your money back? Then they just charge you over X amount of time for the remainder if you keep it?
“Paddington In Touch” I didn’t even try to understand because it was about a rugby game and my brain kind of zoned out until the end where Aunt Lucy showed up.
“Comings and Goings” This one I also understood. It was about Aunt Lucy showing up and deciding to give Mr. Brown a present to show her appreciation for keeping Paddington. (But why JUST Mr. Brown? I don’t remember her wanting to get Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bird anything special). So she decides to get him this special inflatable boat with all these features. Only on the way home in the bus because she’s been bouncing up and down trying out the other boats, she gets sick. Paddington tries to get her some of the seasick pills included with the boat but ends up inflating the boat. Then they have to figure out how uninflated it and get it off the bus. At the end of the book, Aunt Lucy spends Christmas Eve with them and by Christmas Day goes back to Peru.

Michael Bond doesn't seem to put a paw wrong in any of these Paddington stories. Some are stronger than others but all are beautifully written and immensely enjoyable.
How interesting, in the time of the internet, is this comment by Mrs Bird written 50 years ago: "I do wish Aunt Lucy had stopped a little longer. There are so many things I wanted to ask her...". "Don't you think", said Mrs Bird wisely, "that in this world it's rather nice to have some things left unanswered?" (Comings and Goings at Number 32).
There are so many great jokes too, this made me laugh: "A May day signal!", exclaimed Paddington in surprise as he helped Aunt Lucy down the stairs. But it's the middle of December". (Comings and Goings at Number 32).
Woe is me, this will be my last review of Paddington Bear books, whatever am I going to do?
Imagine a day at the beach, seeing a boat, and behind that boat on water skis is our beloved Paddington Bear from Darkest Peru, what a sight that would be. What a funny sight to behold, probably one of the most enjoyable, to me, of the series.
I shall miss Paddington, his marmalade, his grumpy neighbor Mr. Curry, the Browns, Mrs. Bird and Mr. Gruber.
Though it took my kids and a while to get through this book, it was nevertheless entertaining and much like many of the other Paddington books. As always, Paddington gets himself into all sorts of debacles that involve getting lost and having contact with the law. Aunt Lucy makes an appearance in the story, which is always fun.
Fabulous read, as are all the Paddington books. Precious memories of my childhood and being read to by my mother, mingled with laughter at Paddington's antics and delight at rediscovering this series now that I'm in my 50s. It's great bedtime reading, and the little illustrations are particularly delightful.
But I was annoyed by the reference to shiny pound coins, which hadn't been introduced when this book was first published, so I'm assuming it's an attempt to modernise a newer edition. Wholly unnecessarily, I'd argue, since a large part of the charm of the Paddington books is how firmly of their time they are.
I really can’t get enough of little Paddington! I wish I had discovered the magic of these books when I was a child. Seeing the world through Paddington’s eyes is truly a treat that I could indulge in time and time again.
Paddington is just such a charming and honest and naive character that teach you many important lessons through a chain of cackling situations that left me laughing many times in its wake <3 I will always love this lil' bear and his books are amazing <3
