I love Jenifer Lewis and will read anything she writes. I just enjoy spending time with this icon. Walking In My Joy is Ms. Lewis' second book, following The Mother of Black Hollywood. That book was more of a memoir, while this book leans more into her work as an activist and how she dealt with the pandemic.
You definitely should read The Mother of Black Hollywood before you read this book, first because you need to get a feel for how Ms. Lewis speaks and second because this book just assumes you already read that one so she doesn't explain things.
I don't think this book will do as well as her first book because this book leans more outright political than her first book....eventhough in that book Jenifer Lewis let's you know exactly how she feels politically in that book as well. This book also feels less personal than her first book but I'm sure that was on purpose.
I loved this book but I'm biased. This woman could publish anything and I'd buy it. Jenifer Lewis is a national treasure.
Read The Mother of Black Hollywood if you haven't and than pick this one up after that.
jenifer lewis is so funny! i just didn’t feel like i connected with any of the stories in this book. i feel like she said everything she had to say in the first one already.
Oct 4, 1030am ~~ I learned about this book while watching a video clip from Trevor Noah's show. Jenifer Lewis was on a book tour and I was intrigued. I remembered her from late-80's television, and had always liked her, so I ordered this book and her previous memoir The Mother Of Black Hollywood, which I read just before this one.
Before I talk much about the inside of the book, let me make a comment about the outside, the title and cover per Goodreads as of today's date. The front cover image shows the correct title: Walking In My Joy In These Streets. But the book page title is wrong. Perhaps the subtitle 'Stories From On My Way To Happy' was a working title, but it is definitely not the title on my edition or on the cover image on the GR page. Just saying.
In her first book, Lewis explained who she was. In this book we already know her so the focus is a little different. This is more of a shared journey, in a way. Just as personal, of course, almost even more so because we have all lived through the trauma the years since 2016 have brought to the world.
Reading this book was a surprisingly bonding experience. Even though the only thing I have in common with this awesome Diva is that I have lived through the past 64 years too, I closed this book with tears in my eyes. Tears for the success Jenifer has had in her life's journey. Tears for the loving energy she sends out to the whole world. And tears for that last paragraph in the epilogue.
Thank you, Jenifer Lewis, for being you, for sharing your story, and for the hug!
✨ In case you missed it, Auntie Jenny dropped a second book in August!
✨In this memoir she brings us up to speed on her life since The Mother of Black Hollywood, how she dealt with the pandemic lockdowns, reflections on her political actions encouraging us to vote, and going to Africa. This woman is downright hilarious and knows how to tell a story. I never tire of her personality and her constant advocating for mental health. The message to LOVE YOURSELF is loud and clear in this book. I am looking forward to the Oldish spin off if that's still in the works.
This book should absolutely be listened to on audio! Jenifer Lewis narrating her own book was a performance! It was everything and MORE! I was laughing from the first chapter to the end. She tells her story with levity but there are some real, not so funny things that have happened in her life. She talks about living with an untreated bipolar disorder, being molested, the death of her cousin Ronny whom she was very close to. This is a story about a Black woman who is married to the world, her work, her humanitarian efforts and not a man (we are not Tony fans). She speaks of how she is still working through her difficult times by pulling the pain out at the root, because the work is ever present.
There are so many laugh out loud moments in this book along with just real, solid advice. One of my favorite memoirs this year!
I really didn't know much about Jenifer Lewis but she is one badass, older Black woman. Both an actress and activist, she does not hold back talking about her pain seeing Trump be elected President and her experiences during the pandemic. I was especially inspired by how much she cares about social causes like global warming, Black lives matter and the Flint water crisis.
Excellent on audio, she has a particularly unique and one of a kind voice and the audiobook includes excerpts from some of her virial instagram songs/sketches. HIGHLY, highly recommended as an audiobook and especially for fans of books like Jane Fonda's What can I do? As soon as I finished I wanted to go read her first book in which she talks more about her mental health struggles and being diagnosed with bipolar disorder (something she only touches on a little in this book).
My Hollywood Auntie has done it again!!! I want to meet this woman and Tabitha Brown so bad!!! I love her realness and awareness of who she is!!! I need this book in my 'Queendom Library'
Lewis, the outspoken, hilariously profane, and wildly entertaining actress and activist, follows up her no-holds-barred memoir MOTHER OF BLACK HOLLYWOOD with a new and equally entertaining collection of autobiographical essays, WALKING IN MY JOY.
One chapter movingly pays tribute to growing up with her favorite cousin Ronnie (“part cousin, part sibling, part soulmate,” she clarifies). “Ronnie [who was gay] was the beginning, and since then it has been me and a hundred million gay boys running around any town I set foot in,” she writes. After Ronnie’s death in the 1990s, Lewis’s grief almost swallowed her, she writes, until she came to realize that “my pain was merely the receipt, the proof that I had loved.” A decade later, Lewis met a young, eager fan named DJ, to whom she felt an instant connection. (“He had been sent to me. Maybe by Ronnie,” she writes.”) DJ would fast become Lewis’s assistant and move into her basement (and, soon after, win a spot on RuPaul’s Drag Race, competing as his drag persona, Shangela).
Lewis’s WALKING IN MY JOY is also forthright about her activism (climate change, pro-LGBTQ+ and Black Lives Matter, anti-Trump), written with conviction and power. Lewis’s tales are heartfelt, impassioned, and uplifting, but with a pleasing undercurrent of irreverence.
The latest memoir by fierce and fabulous Lewis easily switches between moving confessionals and fiery calls to eradicate oppression.
another incredibly hilarious yet wisdom-filled and profoundly insightful book from auntie. like her first book, “the mother of Black hollywood,” “walking in my joy” is honest, vulnerable, and an absolute treat. and listening to the audiobook made the experience even better! it was a pleasant surprise to realize that the “poems” in the book are actually songs and we as the listener get the pleasure of hearing her sing them.
hands down one of my favorite audiobooks i’ve ever listened to.
First off, Jenifer Lewis is hilarious. I listened to her audiobook and she loves the word fuck and bitch. Lmao. She’s definitely the fun Auntie that everyone needs or has.
This time around her book wasn’t as personal. She talked a lot about politics. She spoke on lgbt, black rights, world events, activism, presidency, etc… The way she expressed herself definitely made these topics less daunting.
She had some personal moments. I still cannot believe what happened between her and Tony! That bastard!
If you want a more personal Jenifer Lewis bio, read her first book!
Jenifer Lewis is a mighty force in these Hollywood and Broadway Streets! 68 movies, 40 animations, 4 Broadway productions. Please believe me 👏🏾
She's literally the Mother of Black Hollywood as she's played the mama in shows and movies from Fresh Prince of Bellaire to What's Love Got to Do with It to my most recent favorite, Black-ish. She and her "Black Jesus" quip have me dying laughing. I didn't know anyone else, besides my mom, who could match Samuel L Jackson and his record breaking favorite word(s) "mutha fkcas". (I intentionally spelled it wrong)
I always wondered why she played the mother role, but I know that they wanted her, Jenifer. It was her spunk, "her don't play with me" demeanor that commands respect, while also being endearing that they wanted. She was that mama, she was that woman.
I loved her narrating her story of Walking in My Joy in These Streets. It was so entertaining and it gave me insight to her thoughts on current events, her life experiences, travel, mental health disorder, and how the people she's met around the world inspired her to serve and make a difference in the world.
Her story was both captivating and hilarious, as well. I particularly cackled when she shared her story of visiting the white house meeting The Obamas. Whew child, she loves her some Barack, and Michelle, even more. Which, I mean, who could blame her?
At the end of each chapter she gave a theatrical song performance which was lovely. Ms. Lewis is so incredibly talented and deserves more shine and recognition that she's gotten, unfortunately. But to see her performing, read her story, and hear her words you'd immediately put some respect on her name.
I love uplifting stories with meaning that encourage and leave a positive impact and this was it. I highly enjoyed this memoir and recommend the audiobook version in her own deep and soulful voice!
Keep walking in your joy, Ms. Lewis, and I’ll be doing the same 💗
This was a disappointment. Her first book IMO was written with such perfection that this book doesn’t even compete with it. I feel like it was a book thrown together. I was an overview of what she had already shared, packed with the injustices and how she is “managing” her rage in order to have joy.
This is probably on one of the few books whose reviews live up to the actual book. No this book shouldn’t be named, “Walking In My Joy” because it’s filled with depressing stories. This book could have been better if she nurtured it and re-titled it. Instead, it’s a mix of what it seems “Journal Entries” and turned it into a book.
I’ll say it wasn’t terrible. She still had some great stories and of course her personality add to the content but it’s not a recommendation for me. If you loved her first book then just enjoy that because this is not the same.
From the title and description on the back of the book I expected uplifting stories. But the book started out with vicious hate. Probably for the shock value. It was good to hear how hard Jenifer Lewis worked to love herself and be a confident women. She overcame immense obstacles in her life to become a success not only on stage and camera but in her own life. She is dedicated to helping those with mental illness and those who have had trauma in their lives.
Unfortunately there was too much hate in this book of joy. Jenifer Lewis talks about the cycle of rage being passed from parents to their children as a bad thing. This book seems to be doing the same thing on a much larger scale. The title of this book would’ve been more appropriately called “ Walking As An Activist”.
Jenifer Lewis never disappoints. She drops memorable life advice while imparting her personal experiences. The book flows seamlessly and so much of her vibrant personality shines through the text.
I would be careful about recommending this book to students as some of the subject matter and language is adulterated. However, for those mature audiences interested in learning more about Ms. Lewis, Behind the scenes in Hollywood, living with mental illness, I would definitely recommend.
Listen! The good Sis Auntie Jeni DON’T MISS!! This book was everything the first book was but you got a much better sense of who she was now and if you read the first book Mother of Black Hollywood it’s a good chance to really see how far she has come. I love that she is so raw and real and there is nobody more extra than Jenifer Lewis and I love it because a Black woman I often feel we are groomed to turn down, mute ourselves and just survive but honey ain’t nothing about Ms. Lewis muted and it’s just nice to see what living like that can be like. I also appreciate that she has been so honest and transparent about about her diagnoses of bipolar disorder. Finally I LOVE Brandy and I wondered if they still had a close relationship and she talks about her in this book and my boo Shangela (Halleloo!) and her have a deep connection and relationship that I didn’t know about and was happy to learn about. Ms. Jenifer Lewis is a certified DIVA and I loved hearing the #ownvoice of a sexually active older Black woman cause enough of our stories do not get told! I highly recommend this book though I will say for the record she drops the N word A LOT! It makes me uncomfortable especially knowing the book will be read across communities in mixed company but that’s my only ick about the book.
This is a phenomenal book. I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC from Amistad Books in exchange for my honest review. I enjoyed every page of it. I actually like this book more than Jenifer’s first book, The Mother Of Black Hollywood. I gave her 1st book 4 stars. This one is definitely 5 stars. ⠀ In this book Jenifer writes about a wide range of topics. The stories are humorous and touching. She shares each story with no-holds-barred honesty. Each chapter ends with a boldly transparent poem. ⠀ Now that I’ve read this book I have a much better understanding of Jenifer the woman. After digesting the stories in this book, her loud, boisterous personality makes more sense to me. But, I was also able to see a softer side to Jenifer. Her delivery is raw and unforgiving. Everything I would expect from Auntie . ⠀ Walking In My Joy is a good, easy read. If your looking for an engaging book of short stories, I highly recommend this one. It is sure to keep you entertained from the beginning to the end.
Jennifer Lewis is an absolute gem. I had just as much fun with this book as I did with her previous one. She is hilarious, immensely talented and very self aware. This follow-up to “The Mother of Black Hollywood” was more anecdotal and political in nature than it’s predecessor and wow, it was a joy.
Jennifer spoke about her anger towards the results of 2016 election and the toll it took on the country. She delved into her fears and family life during the coronavirus pandemic. She explained her relationship with her beloved cousin and the impact he had on her life. But I really appreciated how she detailed her philanthropic efforts as I didn’t know about them beforehand.
All in all, it was a solid and quick read - full of affirmative quotes that were so very humorous and uplifting. I loved it - 5 stars, easily!

Where can you find sharp humor, smart truths and an unforgettable collection of stories? In Jenifer Lewis' new memoir titled Walking in My Joy: In these Streets!
The Mother of Black Hollywood has appeared in 68 movies, 40 animations, 4 Broadway productions and over 200 concerts worldwide. She is an accomplished actress, singer, dancer, community activist and author. With the help of Natalie Guerrero, she writes an entertaining collection of essays about memorable adventures and experiences in Walking in My Joy.
Jenifer Lewis is Auntie-in-my-Head Jenny that I take advice from because I know she's done it. She's been there, done that and learned. Auntie knows! I was nodding in agreement, highlighting and literally LOL while reading Walking in My Joy. She shares stories of love, self-reflection, joy and pain with such an openness. I'm blessed to be one of the first to read it!
Whew—there are some stories and sentences in this book that left my jaw open. Statements we may think but never say aloud. Well, Jenifer Lewis said it for us. She speaks her mind about racism in America, Kanye West, Flint, COVID-19 pandemic, air-fried chicken, aliens and more. She also takes readers along on incredible journeys across the world, unselfishly sharing her personal experiences all the while making us laugh and feel inspired. This memoir truly lives up to its title!
One month and a few books later, and I still recollect stories from Walking in My Joy. I can still hear Jenifer Lewis' distinctive voice telling anecdotes with her signature deep laugh. I am quite the avid reader so it is rare for books to hold space in my mental streets like Walking in My Joy does. The motivational message has stuck with me. I originally rated this memoir 4♥️ but the more I sit with it and write this review, it deserves every bit of 5♥️. It is so worth reading, Bookhearts!
Happy Pub Day, Jenifer Lewis! Walking in My Joy is now available.
Disclaimer: An advance copy was received directly from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are my own and would be the same if I spent my hard-earned coins. ~LiteraryMarie
Another amazing memoir from THE JENIFER LEWIS. I enjoyed this so much. Loved hearing her talk about working on Blackish. I applaud her for including the time the guy she was dating conned her. I know that wasn't easy to talk about and I love her transparency. It can truly happen to anyone, people are just that slick. If you get a chance of course listen to the audio of this because Jenifer's voice is everything. Bravo Jenifer!
I had this audiobook on my TBR for so long and I am happy that I finally got to listen to the audio. I love the fact that Jenifer Lewis narrated this book because she was amazing and the production was on point. She is one of my favorite celebrities because she is so read and raw. I love all of the stories and I will be reading more books by her.
Actress, author, etc. Jenifer Lewis wrote a collection of essays detailing her very interesting life and times in Hollywood, love, personal times, being a Black woman and more. Whether she's traveling around the world or working or coping with the election of Donald Trump, etc., it's definitely a collection of stories of someone who has seen much in her life.
I'm not sure there's much more to say. I was not extremely familiar with her work or her activism. Essay collections are also hit or miss for me, although Lewis definitely has interesting thoughts and has had some fascinating experiences. Some are funny, some are sad, some are painful, some are intensely personal, etc. as is to be expected with collections of essays.
Overall, I would say that if you're a fan this is probably something that would interest you. If you're not someone who is familiar with her work or not a fan, then this might be hit or miss unless you like essay collections or want to read the experiences of a Black woman (which I'd recommend anyway).
Borrowed from the library and that was best for me.
I absolutely love Jenifer Lewis or shall I say Auntie Jen. She reminds me so much of my mother law. I love how she keeps it real in the book and how she sang at the end of chapters. And her being an activist and standing up for the right of our people instead of just sitting idly by. She used her voice to speak and helped encourage people. She had me cracking up so much through out this book. Especially when she said the orange man. All I could do is think back to the Oompa Loompa from Willy Wonka. I love how she spoke about that each one of us is special and we all have issue that we need to work on. And my oh my when she went to Africa...Let's just say she had an accident. ROFL. She does uses profanity, so if don't like that then this book isn't for you, but it was filled with so much advice, wisdom, guidance, support, etc.
I’m ecstatic that Jenifer Lewis wrote this book, if only because it gives me an opportunity to talk about how great she is at giving an audio performance. Her first book is one of my favorite memoirs of all time. If not just one of my favorite books of all time. Finding out about this and reading it was so great I tried to save the last 25% for a special occasion. My only gripe would be that it feels so much shorter than her first one. Which is to be expected and very similar to other second memoirs. It’s really crazy just how much has happened since the publishing of her last book though.
I listened to the audiobook and I would suggest that for all 'readers.' Lewis has a voice made to be heard. But put the volume on low lol. She projects to the last row of the theatre. She recounts her life during quarantine and since. She covers topics not discussed in the first book. And she does it all with wit and a bawdy sense of humor. I enjoyed learning of her activism. I guess I always assumed that most activists were brave intellectuals but Lewis never claims to be an intellectual. She's a woman, upset with the way things are going and using her fame to address it.
Auntie Jen has a fun and deep way of storytelling that really draws you in. She has a great sense of humor and a grand passion in her voice that makes the reader stop dead in their tracks to listen to her message. I really enjoyed this audiobook with her tales of hope, strength and self-reflection, her tunes and poems and her calls to action. This was an amazing read! I'd definitely recommend it to others.
Outstanding. I wish Jenifer Lewis had 15 books. She is an incredible storyteller. Please write another book, Ms Lewis. If audio is accessible to you, that’s the ticket with her books. I could listen to her tell me a story every day forever
