The signs are unmistakable, Momar isn't just targeting Austin's brother.
When one of Momar's grunts breaks into Austin's territory looking to grab Jessie for questioning, Jessie and her crew realize they are under fire. In order to protect themselves, it becomes obvious they need backup.
Thankfully, the basajaun's people have invited Jessie and her crew into the basajaunak lands. This is their golden opportunity to seek their help.
The problem is, a host of mages and mercenaries are following them. Once they take Jessie this time it won't be just for questioning, and she won't be coming back.
To omit this detail to the basajaunak would result in punishment. And everyone knows "punishment" with basajaunak is synonymous with an unmarked grave. But to tell them would get their visit canceled and force them to face the threat alone. Either way could mean certain death.
Decisions, decisions.

I've really enjoyed this series until this book. I get it, they are mated, but not everything revolves around how hot he makes her. Please, please, please go back to telling a really fun story and drop the forced feeling letters to Penthouse scenes.
Momar makes a move on to Jessie and Austin's territory. They quickly realized they needed help and decided to seek out the Basajaunak! Well, there's not a lot of seeking... they have a guide and an invitation after all! Naturally, a bunch of mages and mercenaries have followed them... on to Basajsunak land... how stupid could you be?!?
This book was not one of my favorites, but I loved it dearly all the same!
I usually love Breene’s series, but this one has been going too far off the rails for me to find enjoyment. Jessie was just a normal divorced 40 year old woman starting over without direction for her life a year ago. Now, because she moved into ivy house, she’s: * the most powerful mage “in the world” * the richest woman “in the world” (160 billion dollars from who knows where) * mated to the most powerful shifter “in the world” * the only female gargoyle “in the world” * the second most powerful mage “in the world” wants to be her mentor and help her because she’s “sensational, amazing, etc.” He literally doesn’t stop gushing about how awesome she is from the time he’s introduced in book 4 * she looks 40, but has the metabolism and health of a 20 year old in her prime.
The wish fulfillment is so over the top, it’s annoying. Every part of her life that most women feel vulnerable about is catered to, without exception. Don’t know what to wear? Don’t worry about it! The butler is an expert in high fashion and will dress you to look amazing! Don’t like planning meals and cooking? Don’t worry about it! The most powerful, sexy mate in the world loves cooking and can make 5 star worthy meals on the fly and loves doing it! Her butler is a close second! Want to be super powerful without the headache of managing all the responsibilities that come with it? Don’t worry about it! Her team will manage all the decision making and logistics so she can just focus on training and having amazing sex with her mate. Are Jessie, her mate, and her powerful house not enough for you? Don’t worry about it! She’s got a team if super powerful people from across the world that dropped everything to be on her team for life.
One complaint I had from the beginning is that her team didn’t really seem to have a purpose. She keeps summoning all these powerful people to join her crew, but i keep wondering what their purpose or their mission is. I guess it’s been answered. It’s to protect her from power-hungry mages. Once they’ve been defeated, I still don’t really understand what their purpose will be. Are they going to be making and enforcing laws for the supernatural community to keep the little people safe? I do find her crew’s oddities funny and endearing, but it seems like that aspect has been pushed further and further over the top to try and balance how overpowered Jessie has become in every other aspect of her life. Like the author needed a reason for Jessie to be relatable, so she made the crew more ridiculous to compensate for her amazing good fortune in all the other areas.
Welp, it had to happen sometime. Granted we had to wait until book 6 before we experienced a snooze fest of a story. This just wasn’t as great as all the others in the series. It just wasn’t. I was severely underwhelmed and/or bored during the whole book. What happened to all the Niamph and Mr. Tom goodness? We barely got any real scenes of Tom’s oddities on full display. I felt like nothing happened here and this book could honestly have been skipped altogether.
I enjoyed it for sure, though I was a little put out by Jess in this one. She seemed to be a weird mash-up of Debbie Downer (early in the book) and then hesitating damsel later. It was a little odd to me because she was less clunky and useless in the first book than she felt like she was in this battle. And everyone trying to talk her into just letting go felt a little repetitive and tedious - I just wanted to slap some sense into her.
I feel like we've seen her overcome her battle-wariness already, and to that end she's fought in some serious battles before. Here, she was freezing up and spectating while her friends - her team - were hugely at risk and counting on her. It wasn't impressive.
But in the end, that was just a bit of a quibble. I love this series, and this team, and the overall arc. The gnomes were hilarious and horrifying, and it was good fun seeing Sebastian and Nessa integrate with her team. This book felt largely like a transition - moving away from who we thought was the big bad (Elliot Graves), and learning about the person that it seems is actually the big bad (Momar). Building the team, gathering allies, gathering info, and continuing to grow as a team and family. It was fun!
Can't wait for the next!
Re-read March 2024 Honestly, this is my least favorite book in the series. That's not to say there isn't tons in here that I enjoy, but Jess suddenly turning into a pathetic damsel was weird and seemed very out of the blue. As a character, she has always felt capable, pragmatic, and determined. This whiny, wobbly dishrag version of her was deeply offputting. It's the first time in the series that I didn't like her.
Fortunately, she shakes it off, and it doesn't come up after this book. And this book is overall still good fun - it still lands in the re-read pile, after all!
It's so good to read about the gang again after the last book. I didn't realize how much I miss them when I started reading this one. They are still weird. They are still a hoot. The best crew for Jessie. They have to go and visit the Basajaun's territory and hopefully form an alliance. Another adventure for our gang. Too short if you're going to ask me. And I thought Edgar is a hero in the battle. Can't wait for the next one! Hope it won't be a long wait as this one..
Just when I thought I couldn't be surprised more, the Queen pulled out more! I was absolutely intrigued by this book and laughed harder than I expected. I can't wait for the next book!
The magical world has a pecking order to rival nature...or high school. Everyone is looking to take someone else down a peg. The Ivy House crew are having none of it. They rise to each occasion with self-doubt and false bravado, unless it's the Basajaun issuing the challenge. In that case, certain mages just play dead.
As far as book boyfriends go, Austin Steele is *chef's kiss* perfection. He gladly cooks for Jess, no questions asked. He makes sure she and everyone else knows she's the most important person in the room to him, before he serves her beer. You have an Alpha who tries really hard not to be a dick about it, but also gives Jess the head's up about what will trigger his possessiveness and when. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! He's also secure enough to submit to her own inner Alpha, without throwing a man tantrum. Talk about hot! Also, doesn't hurt to have Danny Gavigan in your ear making all those delicious rumbly sounds. I feel like Nessa trailing after Broken Sue.
Jessie is becoming the leader of her people, & fulfilling her destiny.
A world by kf breeze is a magical place. It’s like stepping through a tiny door into another dime soon. The characters, their originality, and lifelike qualities have them becoming the friends & family you never knew you needed. This book, will have your rooting and cheering for everyone on her team, old or new members, & willing them to succeed. All while cheering Jessie & Austin’s relationship, & hoping their love can withstand the fire of what’s coming next. It is easy to immerse oneself in this tale, & leave this world behind.
Magical Midlife Challenge is book 6 in the Leveling Up series. I enjoyed every minute of this book. It was full of action and excitement. This book furthered the overall storyline for the series. We really get to see Jessie coming into her own and becoming a powerful leader alongside Austin. I also really loved that Edgar got to shine in this book and show his worth as more than just the super old, kooky, vampire. I am looking forward to book 7. I wish I didn’t have to wait, but thankfully it looks like it will release in a month or so. The narration was good as always. It is the same narrator for the full series.
Just can’t do it. Not only DNF, didn’t make it past the first two pages. The concept and the story in the series is a good one. A middle aged divorcee discovers she has magical powers and finds a new life and new friends in a new town. Unfortunately, the story is incidental to the porn. I’ve made it through five of the books by ignoring the porn for the story but this one just is too much. If I want a little story with my porn, I’ll read Penthouse. This story is good but not enough to make up for the unrelenting porn.
Yeah, so this one where my love affair with this series hits a snag. I was on the struggle bus with this one from the beginning and it never really gelled. Not until the very last chapter which is a set up for the next book.
Overall, I found Jessie very frustrating in this one. She does a lot of hand wringing and overthinking. You just wanted to shake her and tell her to get on with it damn!
I also hat it when super powerful entities have their power curtailed in odd ways because the plot needs them to be.
And then I wondered about the mercenaries the mages hire. They were fighting what was basically an armed unit with what seemed like hardened military training. They were mercenaries, hired muscle. And there were a lot of them. But they were human and in this world, humans don't by and large know that magical beings exist. So...how the heck do they advertise for these mercenaries? This is just one band, so there have to be more. And if that many people know, how is it that the secret hasn't gotten out? Anyway.... yeah I just found this one just really meh.
Added to that the humor, which is what I've enjoyed so much about this series, has ratcheted way down in this one. The author seems to have given Nessa, Jessie's usual wry and funny inner voice.
So I am hoping we bounce back with the next one, this one was a dud for me.
I love this series so much but this book was a little bit of a let down. It was really slow and there wasn’t much character progression. I am excited for Ulric’s Mama who came in at the end though.
This is one of my favorite series I've read! I love our characters. I love how much I laugh and the battles are thankfully few, b/c they tend to gruesome. I loved seeing Jess let go and become her whole self.
Oh my, Jesse and Austin have kicked it into steamy territory and I am fanning myself with glee! Austin is strong but steadfast in his love for Jesse. Make no mistake though, he is an alpha among alphas and Jesse is right there with him in power and in strength.
Jesse is still working to blend her gargoyle with her Jane thinking and it is an internal battle for the ages. She is calling the battle to her with the help of her odd and misfit crew. In order to prevail she will need to enter the darkness and rely on her connections to pull her back out.
I just adore all the side characters in this series. They get more interesting with each book and we see more and more of what makes them tick. Nieve is really standing out, not just as the grumpy old woman who can drink you under the table, but as a master at her craft. Edgar is just as odd and creepy as ever which totally works for him and the crew. I am intrigued by Sebastian and Nessa though and I really want to get to know them even more. Though we hear a lot from them in this installment, there is so much more to learn that has been hinted at.
So much Basajuun! I’m so so happy with what I read and you will be too. Can’t give more away than that though!
An artfully woven story that is captivating, hilarious, and steamy all at once. Continuing this series is a pleasure that I can’t wait to further indulge in!
I know most people have some sort of day dream about what they would do if they won the lottery, or fell through a portal and ended up 500 years in the past, or suddenly found out about a magical world, etc etc etc. Most of those day dreams are probably seeing life through rose colored glasses, where nothing ever goes wrong. But this series is what I feel like would actually happen if you found out there was a magical world + inherited millions of dollars - with all of the creepy butlers, even creepier vampire gardeners, and a crazy crew that really can’t do anything right.
This was such a great funny read! I got so lost in the book captured with Jessie and the shenanigans that she has to deal with it. I absolutely loved this installment and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Jessie and the crew. I want to spill the beans but trust me it’s worth the read!! The challenges Jessie had to overcome were so good!! This book was unputdownable! I highly recommend this series!!
There was quite a long gap between the release of the previous book in the series (Magical Midlife Meeting) and this one so I took the time to indulge in a series reread before picking up this book and I found myself falling in love with this world and the characters all over again. This is just such a fun series to read and I love that the characters are older than you often see.
Jesse may be fairly new to the magical world but she's got plenty of life experience to draw from so she's able to hold her own. Her relationship with Austin was a real slow burn but things have reached well over boiling point now so we're getting more of the heat that I'm customary to in K.F. Breene's writing.
The side characters shine with all their crazy antics and this instalment lets us get to know so much more about the basajaunak which was fun. I did think we might get a little further information about Momar but it makes sense that Jesse and Austin are taking the time to build their power base and get as many allies as possible before the big showdown and I'm already excited for the next book so it's great that we only have a couple of months to wait!
To quote the heroine. The characters here are "the most absurd bunch of weirdos in the history of the world." But, like her, I kinda got used to them and find them cute now. :D
It’s been a while since I’ve read an Ivy House Crew book, but I quickly fell back into their madness… and enjoyed every minute of it.
Only Ivy House would have a battle between dolls and gnomes…
I enjoyed the scenery and way the basajaunak live.
And Niamh – drinking everyone under the table and then wrestling with a basajaun. Of course.
The final battle in the book was quite intense and awesome. Edgar was surprisingly agile and deadly. Brochan… wow. Even Jessie’s gargoyle reacted to his bravery and amazingness.
I do wonder what Sebastian is up to… besides passing out in fear when challenged by a basajaun. LOL.
Can’t wait to read the next book. Too bad some of the language puts me off… (using the Lord’s name as an expletive isn’t cool).
I love this world and these characters. This might not be my favorite of the series, but I enjoyed it all the same. It has been a while since I read the others, and I am diving back in without a refresher of the world. It didn't seem to matter. I laughed out loud several times. The banter was from some different characters than we have seen, and it was nice to have some focus shift. There was a lot more of the mating bond interactions this time, so if that isn't your thing, you have been warned. I needed a funny read, and this fit the bill. Serious things are building and coming, but this found family seems to be handling it all in stride.
This series is a huge favorite of mine and I was so excited for this newest release! Once I started reading I absolutely could not put it down!! Jessie and Austin are, hands down, one of the best couples I've read in a series in a while! I love their story and dynamic so much! I will never get tired of the shenanigans of the Ivy House crew as a whole. I love the action, I love the humor, everything in the story just blends perfectly. I can't wait for the next one!
The battle scene in this one was good, but man this one really dragged for me. I’ll still probably listen to the dramatized audio on hoopla whenever I just need a fun background listen during a project or something, but I’m not all that excited to keep going if it’s just going to be more of the same. I don’t think I can hear one more chapter about how the beasts are calling to each other or how this creature’s culture requires this specific thing to happen or “you better not do this thing or they’ll think you mean this…” it’s just too much and feels a lot like filler.
This series just keeps on giving , great characters , weird characters even characters you didn't realise you needed til they showed up from KF Breenes brain .Funny , sarcastic random PNR beasties , enough side plots to keep anyone happy it will be a sad day when this series comes to a end & I will feel like I've lost something like an old aunt who smelled a bit had her quirks but you loved her all the more for it .
Absolutely perfect. My favorite book so far. The storyline is wonderful and FUN. I laughed out loud multiple times. I worried. I hoped. I cared so much about the characters. Dave. Lol What a name for him! Sebastian- I hope so much that he’s a good guy. Those gnomes- I was laughing out loud. I also learned a new word!! Verkempt/farklempt.
This writer is talented. I’d LOVE to see this turned into a series on Netflix, Apple TV, or etc.
