Milestones by Chrissy Munder Things started out great for Devon and Jeff, but as time passes and their work commitments grow, so does the distance between them. As Valentine's Day approaches, it takes a stranger's advances and a friend's well-meaning interference to remind them that sometimes it's more important to celebrate the little milestones in life than the big ones.
Under Protest by G. S. Wiley In 1973, aspiring writer Bobby Katz lives in a Greenwich Village loft with his activist boyfriend and an assortment of hippies and radicals. But something's missing. Arrested during a Valentine's Day protest against the Vietnam War, Bobby comes face to face with a high school friend, Jim Darnell, now an NYPD officer - and the relationship neither of them ever really left behind.
A Year-Long Valentine by Jaxx Steele A singer at a jazz and blues club, Stephan's dream has always been to make it big. [ Wild Side|9877168] by Janey Chapel Ryan's usual hookups are "jocks and jarheads," but when he takes a job at a beachfront restaurant during the busy Valentine's Day weekend, he feels an immediate chemistry with Nick, an old...
Sean Kennedy lives in the second-most isolated city in the world, thinks there are thylacines still out in the wild, and eagerly awaits the return of Twin Peaks in 2017.
Seems too harsh to give it one star, it's a bunch of inoffensive stories that are fine for killing time, but overall they blend into 'meh' nothing stands out or makes me want to look up more from the authors.
Don't Shoot the Messenger - I liked the premise, fun, and the characters are cute and made me laugh, but I was put off by the head hopping which made it a little disjointed to read.
The Second Time is a Charm - Obviously part of a series. There was too much info dump and four couples competing for attention in this one short. In fact I'm not clear who the main couple were. Sean is the pov character yet his love interest is so vague I can't recall his name and only know he's black. More page space is given to Rick and Jeremy (who likely have their own book) more character is given to Seamus and Jamal (who likely have their own book) and even the glimpse of Gabe and Dillon (who likely have their own book) leaves more of an impression! Possibly the series is good, but as a short this doesn't impress.
Better Late than Never - Slut reforms at first glance from shy studious type. Some good banter, quick light read.
Indulge on Valentine's Day - I like the group of girls. A fun read, I skipped all the italics though (a page full), they're a personal peeve.
Hot Dr. Reindeer Antlers Kisses it Better - wow long title! It's cute enough. Not sure why tear tracks alone would show something was wrong, a cut finger needing six stitches seems reason enough to me. Tension didn't make much impact and it was all happy, happy families, Seth makes a good little wifey!
Milestones - Could never decide who to empathise with - these two just don't connect, the issue is ones obsession with his work yet the other is away on business when he's sulking about this. Their friend/employee is helping or maybe interfering and taking advantage. The set up makes it sound like they've been together longer than they have. They don't seem to know each other/support each other at all.
Under Protest - Not sure if this was intended as a political piece. The setting seemed very detailed/researched while the connection between the characters isn't felt. They were close as children but that doesn't seem enough to make them anything now, people grow up, change. Didn't convince me. As they're portrayed Bobby is drifting without making any commitment (in beliefs, to anyone..) and Jim is responsible and could do better.
A Year Long Valentine - The romancing is mostly referred to rather than showed so seems more about one having power to take what he wants than a mutual attraction. It bugged me that the initial set-up suggests a different coupling and the extra character is actually more likeable.
Meant to be - Fast movers. They meet at an airport, have sex, then are discussing setting up home together!
The Wild Side - I’m not sure why Nick decides to end his celibacy but accept love at first sight and it’s a nice little story, the pink-pink room made me smile.
Coming Home - I don’t get this one. They talk like an established couple but then Mason’s mother asks if he’s still talking to that boy, then they get together and are talking about moving in together, yet talking like they don’t know anything about each other except Mason’s ‘Suzy Homemaker’ capabilities.
Kind of torn on this one. It's not a bad collection, but it's not that great, either. I'll instead rate it a 2+/2.5 because, in the spectrum of m/m anthologies from Dreamspinner that I've read lately, it doesn't live up to the others.
Also, I noticed a number of the stories feature couples who seem to be established already. Yeah, um...those stories didn't really stand on their own, peeps.
I'd group the stories in maybe three categories:
Stories I enjoyed and may actually revisit to reread again one of these days: "Don't Shoot the Messenger" - Humorous and cute. Nice and lighthearted start to the collection. "Indulge on Valentine's Day" - This was sweet - pun sorta intended. "The Wild Side" - Great setting on the boardwalk. Pretty decent background of each of the guys, too.
Stories pleasant enough to pass the time: "Better Late Than Never" - I do like the bad boy meets geeky virgin wunderkind set up. "Under Protest" - I was skeptical b/c this began clearly as a historical story, set during Vietnam protests. Not sure if it would be my cup of tea, but it was a sweet story. I would love to know how this HEA turned out. "Meant To Be" - Cute story about bringing together two chaotic lifestyles.
Stories that didn't really work for me: "The Second Time is the Charm" "Hot Dr. Reindeer Antlers Kisses It Better" "Milestones" "A Year-Long Valentine" "Coming Home"
Overall, it's not as though I was super disappointed with the collection of stories. That said, I wasn't thrilled, either. It was a pleasant enough way to squeeze a little romance in without too much commitment.
Don't Shoot the Messenger = 3 It was a sweet fic and singing telegram messenger is an amusing job.
The Second Time is the Charm = 1 Feels like the author crammed too much background info here, and I just didn't like the story that I can't even finish reading it.
Better Late Than Never = 2 It was ok and the badboy meets geniuscutevirginboy is interesting but the story just didn't deliver nicely for me
Indulge on Valentine's Day by = 3.5 I really like the writing style and the characters are interesting just didn't like the whole mess
Hot Dr. Reindeer Antlers Kisses It Better = 1.5 Idek. I find it a bit too mushy but I did manage to finish the story not like the second one. :)
Milestones = 4 Loved it<3 Devon is adorable.
Under Protest = 4 I love this one just wishing they have more interactions after their unexpected reunion and not just mostly flashbacks.
A Year-Long Valentine = 2 I like the physical descriptions of the characters but they feel two dimensional to me. And it was kinda cheesy.
Meant to Be = ??? Wasn't in the mood when I read this so I'm holding off my rating
The Wild Side = 3.5 It was sweet. Just thought it could work better if it was longer and the characters have more interactions.
This is a pretty good anthology with many repeat performances of previous men seen in the Christmas anthology by the same publisher. However, with the exception of one story, each is easily read as a standalone tale though no doubt those familiar with the couples will have more of a connection. I haven’t read the previous anthology and each of these relationships was new to me.
From new relationships to long time loves, this anthology of stories revolves around the romantic holiday Valentine’s Day. Some men are anxious for love, others are trying to rekindle lost love and still others are looking for love just for the night. The stories range from sweet to scorching hot with something for every romance lover. Standouts are easily “Don’t Shoot the Messenger”, “Milestones”, and “Under Protest”. These alone make the anthology worth reading and went solidly on my favorites list while the others offer a varying array of hot and sexy men sure to please any palate.
Don't Shoot the Messenger by Sean Kennedy This is an adorable and witty story about a college student making ends meet by working for a singing telegram company. Those clichés that spring to mind? Well there is all that and more when Dave has to deliver a breakup by proxy to a cute, geeky IT guy named Mitchell on Valentine’s Day. Humorous and delightful, the characters fairly leapt off the page with their droll charm and lovely fumbling. With only a few words, the author managed to draw me into the setting quickly and easily leaving me rooting for Dave and his unorthodox new date. Thankfully no Tupperware was involved.
The Second Time is the Charm by Maria Albert This was very confusing as obviously it’s one of a series of books all staring similar characters. Unfortunately these characters were thrown in and out of scenes at a lightening pace with little to no explanation about who they were or their connection. The continual point of view changes made it almost impossible to discern whose vantage you were seeing from and whose thoughts belonged to whom in crowded scenes. There was less of a plot and more of a collection of scenes staring the numerous gay characters featured in the book. Angel and Dillion did catch my interest and perhaps those familiar with the series of characters will be able to connect more but anyone starting out should skip this offering and move on.
Better Late than Never by Ashlyn Kane This is a prequel for the subsequent novel “True North” staring Julian Piet. In this story Julian is a young prodigy struggling to fit in at college when he’s younger, smarter, and more driven than most of those around him. A sexy playboy known to flirt with anything that moves happens to deliver Julian’s birthday gift on Valentine’s Day and leads to an unexpected romance between the shy, inexperienced Julian and the confident, sexy Patrick. This is a sweet and lovely introduction to the character of Julian who grows up considerably in the next book.
Indulge on Valentine's Day by S. Blaise In this delightful and fun story, Glyn is a closet chocoholic working in an upscale candy store and coveting his sexy manager Max. Unfortunately due to various misunderstandings it takes most of the short story for this unlikely couple to work things out but it’s certainly a satisfying and adorable journey to get there. Glyn’s insecurity is offset by his good humor and surprising fantasies, most involving chocolate and Max. This was a short and easy read that was very enjoyable with likable and appealing characters. Glyn’s love of chocolate was charming as was his careful and almost sexual way of eating it.
Dr. Hot Reindeer Antlers Kisses it Better by Bethany Brown Despite the horrible title, this was a decent story, albeit the characters were somewhat weak. Seth is an accident-prone carpenter who is lucky to be dating a doctor that he met about six weeks ago in the ER after yet another accident. Now Seth is hoping to plan the perfect Valentine’s Day meal for his new love when he runs into an ex-boyfriend, bringing up all of Seth’s old insecurities and issues. Seth struggles with his own self-worth and suffers from a lack of confidence making him a slightly weak and emotional character. Even though Seth knows Noah would never cheat on him, he breaks down crying at the mere thought and subsequently hurts himself. Thankfully Noah comes in time to stitch Seth’s hand back together and show him exactly how deep their mutual love is. Although this was a sweet and touching story, Seth shows very few positive qualities that would attract a confident, sexy man such as Noah. Perhaps in a future installment Seth will finally feel reassured by Noah’s love.
Milestones by Chrissy Munder In this absolutely lovely story, Jeff and Devon have been together for five years but after the first few years, they both let work and individual focuses divert their attention from their relationship. While the impetus for this seems to be Jeff’s singular dedication to his business and less and less on Devon and their relationship, Devon’s willingness to go along with Jeff without speaking up certainly did them no favors. It takes an enterprising employee of Jeff’s with some well placed advice to turn these men around and put them back onto the road to happiness in their relationship. The love between Jeff and Devon was clear as was the sense of loss they both felt at the current state their relationship slipped into. I loved the honest emotions of both men and the reminder that all relationships take effort, perhaps the most when your attention is elsewhere.
Under Protest by G.S. Wiley In Wiley’s “simple love story” Bobby is a starving writer living with a community of anti-war protesters, led by his lover Mike. When Bobby is arrested at a protest gone wrong, he discovers his old high school fling Jim is his arresting officer. When he and Jim met senior year, they were both struggling to get past the death of a parent and their resulting unhappy home lives. Their friendship and ultimately relationship was significant to both young men, although in college they faded away as high school lovers do. Once reconnected, their chemistry clicks again in this engaging and well-written story. This love story is a classic for any romance lover.
A Year Long Valentine by Jaxx Steele When nightclub singer Stephan catches the new club owner’s attention on Valentine’s Day, he begins a year-long whirlwind of travel, singing, and mystery rendezvous with the owner, Julio. Stephan has no idea that Julio is the owner or that the men he has intimate and exciting encounters with is actually the same man creating elaborate games to keep the suspense and mystery alive. After the year of wooing, Julio confesses to Stephan his real identity and scheming as the two fall in love with a happy ever after ending. While Stephan was likable and the premise is fun, I felt there was less focus on the actual wining and dining as Julio only reveals himself to Stephan once, and that is in a smoking hot sexual encounter. However, for a fun and sexy bit of fluff, this story does give that.
Meant to Be by Zahra Owens Kai and Toby meet in a crowded international airport during a blizzard, stranding all flights and setting up these two world travelers for an erotic encounter. That led to a long distance relationship with Toby traveling for the majority of the year while Kai kept their home together. Finally after five years Toby decides to settle down to a grateful Kai and share a real life together instead of snippets and pieces. Both men were likeable and charming in their pursuit of each other and their lives. Kai struck me as a man who was very careful to ensure Toby’s life with him was easy and drama free, ultimately paying off with the reward of Toby quitting his job and finally making a life together. Although Toby struck me as somewhat selfish in this regard, these two are a lovely couple and the story was certainly appealing.
The Wild Side by Janey Chapel This has one of the best beginnings to an erotic romance I’ve read. Ryan is in the middle of getting a blowjob from a cute hockey goalie when Ryan’s faghag friend Chey starts to call out for him and bang on the restroom door. In this brief scene we are told that Ryan is a man-whore, used to one night stands with random men and considers the word commitment to be on par with STD. We also realize that good friend Cheyenne is no stranger to manipulating Ryan’s life and hookups. Along those lines Ryan agrees to help Chey on Valentine’s Day at her old summer job that called asking for additional waiters. Once there, Ryan meets Nick, a man with a painful relationship past and enough “back off” signals that he may as well have a warning sound attached. Ryan slowly comes to realize that Nick is unique and deserves more than a quick, mindless hookup. Both characters are humorous and likeable with a genuine warmth about them that you can’t help but appreciate. Adventurous Ryan is a great compliment for the more cautious Nick and I can envision a lot of laughter and escapades in their future.
Coming Home by Nicki Bennett and Ariel Tachna This is another long distance relationship story with Tate rescuing a stranded Mason in a previous anthology and now six weeks later, they’re trying to make plans for Valentine’s Day. However, those plans are complicated by Tate’s work as a long distance trucker and the uncertainty Mason feels about the future of their relationship. Although the story was very sweet and both men were able to communicate openly and easily, their resolution with commitment rings felt somewhat rushed when considering they’ve only been together a short time and most of it has been apart due to Tate’s job. However, they do certainly have hot sex to add to the mix and a fun, easy story.
There were some really good stories in this book and a couple I didn't like all that much. One that I couldn't make myself finish reading. Because I found the stories so varying in terms of how much I could connect with the plot and the characters (and enjoy the writing style), I rated each story separately.
Don't Shoot the Messenger (Sean Kennedy): 3.5 stars
The Second Time is the Charm (Maria Albert): 1 star
Better Late Than Never (Ashlyn Kane): 3.5 stars
Indulgence on Valentine's Day (S. Blaise): 4 stars
Hot Dr. Reindeer Antlers Kisses It Better (Bethany Brown): 3 stars
Milestones (Chrissy Munder): 3.5 stars
Under Protest (G. S. Wiley): 4 stars
A Year-Long Valentine (Jaxx Steele): 2 stars
Meant to Be (Zahra Owens): 3.5 stars
The Wild Side (Janey Chapel): 4.5 stars
Coming Home (Nicki Bennett & Ariel Tachna): 3 stars
A very nice anthology which has been on my owned TBR for too long. The stories are summarized in the blurb so I’m not going to mention them in this review. However, two of the stories stood out among the rest and, even though they were in the first part of the book, they set the bar high and remained my favorites throughout.
My favorite was The Second Time is the Charmby Maria Albert. This one actually covered two romances, which at times felt a little awkward with switching back and forth, but was super romantic and perfect for Valentine’s Day. It’s about a florist who hasn’t had a boyfriend in three years, ever since he escaped from an abusive relationship. When he accidentally sprays mace in a cop’s eyes, thinking the cop was his ex and was hurting someone, he ends up with the cop’s partner in his life. Very sweet, very sexy and wonderfully romantic tale.
My second favorite was Don't Shoot the Messenger by Sean Kennedy This story is about Dave who works as a delivery person for singing telegrams. The bonus is that he gets to sing while waiting for his big break on stage, but the downside is getting on the subway wearing a bear costume, or carrying a quiver of arrows. He finds love with Mitch, a good-looking IT guy who works from home. Dave is sent to cheer him up and his heart gets involved. Very sweet story.
Most of the other stories were very nice and I enjoyed them but if I had to pick a #3 for my list, I’d pick Coming Home by Nicki Bennett & Ariel Tachna
Apparently there’s a prequel to this story, previously published by Dreamspinner Press, but it certainly stands alone well. It’s about an over-the-road truck driver named Tate who is maintaining a long distance relationship with Mason, a guy he rescued from a holiday snowstorm. Six weeks later and Tate is trying to get home to Mason and Mason is trying to work up the courage to ask Tate for a commitment. It was a great finale to the Valentine’s Day anthology.
This anthology from Dreamspinner Press, hosting numerous Dreamspinner authors, is a bit of an uneven book. Each story has romance at the core, with love culminating on Valentine’s Day. To be honest, most of the stories were so-so. At least three of them, according to the Goodreads page, feature characters who have appeared in other novels — so, having not read the novels, I was introduced to these characters with very little backstory. It’s hard to appreciate a character when you don’t know much about them. I’m sure these stories were greatly enjoyed by people who have read the accompanying novels, but I had difficulty getting in to them.
The writing, as well, was uneven. In this anthology, and really, in a LOT of gay romance books that I’ve read, there are consistent problems with wandering POV (point of view). We are very clearly in a certain character’s POV at the start of the scene and then it switches halfway through to a different character. It’s really quite jarring. However, about half the stories in this anthology had very minor violations, or none at all. There really is a mix of weaker stories and weaker writing with excellent stories with excellent writing.
Don't Shoot the Messenger by Sean Kennedy - The Second Time is the Charm by Maria Albert -***1/2 New characters with old ones from her previous stories. Better Late Than Never by Ashlyn Kane -**** Nice to read about how Julian and Patrick first met. From the Lost Boys and Lost Letter series Indulge on Valentine's Day by S. Blaise -****1/2 Mmmmmm...chocolate! Hot Dr. Reindeer Antlers Kisses It Better by Bethany Brown -**** Sequel to Christmas Luck Milestones by Chrissy Munder - **** Under Protest by G. S. Wiley - A Year-Long Valentine by Jaxx Steele - Meant to Be by Zahra Owens - The Wild Side by Janey Chapel - **** Coming Home by Nicki Bennett & Ariel Tachna -**** Sequel to Weathering the Storm
With anthologies, I rank each story to work an average, this came in at 3.6. A couple of stories covered characters I'd read in longer books so it was fun see these guys earlier/later. There was probably only one story out of the 10 that I wasn't really keen on and I think in an anthology, thats quite a good ratio. It is an art to get a full bodied story over in a short amount of words and in the most part, I thought these were good at achieving this balance. So in summary, a good selection of sexy stories, perfect for coffee/lunch breaks etc! Didnt hurt that I picked this up for free
I swear I will go back and read the rest but I just read the Ariel Tachna and Nicki Bennett story of Tate and Mason in this one so I can read tying the knot. This is a sweet Valentine's story that contains some surprises for both men. Looking forward to the next story.
