About the Step-Up Books
Published in the 1960s and 1970s, they serve as a follow up series for students who have surpassed the reading level of the I Can Read books. They are simply narrated and have short sentences. They are broken into chapters that consist of about three pages usually. Pictures are throughout.

For the reading level that this is geared for, they are written well. I enjoyed the stories and the facts I learned from them. A good source for additional reading material for your beginning reader and good books to use to graduate your child from picture books to something more substantial.

Ages: 5+
Reading Level: 2nd - 3rd grades
Pages: approx. 50-90
How many titles: 38
Illustrations: full of illustrations and photographs
Price Range: $2 – $40 depending on the title and its rarity.

Cleanliness: the word "n*gg*rs" is used twice.

**Like my reviews? I also have hundreds of detailed reports that I offer too. These reports give a complete break-down of everything in the book, so you'll know just how clean it is or isn't. I also have Clean Guides (downloadable PDFs) which enable you to clean up your book before reading it!

My Favorite Book

The book I read was about Martin Luther King. I liked reading this because it has arguments about discrimination against African Americans which was from unfair laws. He believed in God because God says everybody has to be equal with no differences. He was minister of Baptist church. He fought without violence. It is easy to understand the new vocabulary. It has short chapters. The interesting history made me to continue reading. It gives me lot information the history in the past and gives me more enthusiasm to learn English. I learned many things. Most of that history has been writing in the past. I learned from him that nothing is impossible to get a dream and give animation to continue learn English and finish my college to get a better job also to help people who don’t understand English.

Martin Luther King, Jr. liked other black people and I'm glad that he helped them. The part I didn't like was that the white people didn't like the black people. Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted to start up a boycott on a bus and it worked, but a few weeks or months later the white people got very angry. They burned the buses and they popped the tires. The buses were all broken. I learned that everyone in the world should not hurt other people.
I liked learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. and how he helped the rights of black people. I want to help people too.

When Martin Luther King Jr. was a boy, he was going to the shop some days. He found a white boy and they played together but soon the white boy wasn't at the shop because he said he said he didn't like to play with Martin Luther King Jr. anymore. When he turned into a man he was very polite and believed in Jesus.

I liked this book because Martin Luther King Jr. because he taught about black and whites not fighting but to hold hands as brothers and sisters and he talked about Jesus.

This is a very eductional book about Dr. Martin Luther King. I've read some things in this book that I didn't know about Dr. King, such as he skipped the 12th grade. He was a very smart man. He went to kindergarten prior to be five years old. He has even been in so many accidents and walked away, as if nothing happen.

I've also learn something about Jessie Jackson that I didn't know and that is, he ran for president in 1984 and 1988.

I notice there is a revised edition of Meet Martin Luther King Jr, but the copy I owned and read multiple times was the original 1969 version. I'm pretty sure it was my first introduction to the civil rights leader, and I remember thinking he was a great man from the beginning. But I bet I would cringe if I read this book today, just because it was written completely from a white perspective.

This was an excellent intro to the civil rights movement, and a fairly simple but good biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. It touched on many events and topics that have stirred in us interest in learning more, so we've been supplementing this book with lots of picture books about the era and central people in it.
