Kay Hooper (aka Kay Robbins) was born in California, in an air force base hospital since her father was stationed there at the time. The family moved back to North Carolina shortly afterward, so she was raised and went to school there.
The oldest of three children, Kay has a brother two years younger and a sister seven years younger. Her father and brother are builders who own a highly respected construction company, and her mother worked for many years in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant, a position she held until her untimely death in March 2002. Kay's sister Linda works as her Business Manager, Events Coordinator, and is playing a major role in the creation and operation of The Kay Hooper Foundation.
Kay graduated from East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College — where she quickly discovered that business classes did not in any way enthrall her. Switching to more involving courses such as history and literature, she also began to concentrate on writing, which had been a longtime interest. Very quickly hooked, she asked for a Christmas typewriter and began seriously working on her first novel. That book, a Regency romance titled Lady Thief, sold to Dell Publishing in 1980. She has since published more than 60 novels and four novellas.
Kay is single and lives in a very small town in North Carolina, not far from her father and siblings. Deigning to live with her are a flock of cats — Bonnie, Ginger, Oscar, Tuffy, Felix, Renny, and Isabel — of various personalities who all like sleeping on manuscripts and whatever research happens to be spread across Kay's desk. And living amongst the many felines are two cheerfully tolerant dogs, a shelter rescue, Bandit, who looks rather like a small sheepdog, and a Sheltie named Lizzie.
Hiding in the Shadows by Kay Hooper is a great story. There are many elements to the story that keep it exciting and suspenseful.
When you first meet Dinah Leighton she is working as an investigative journalist. She is hot on a story and then she just disappears. Her boyfriend Cain McGregor is doing all he can to get clues about her disappearance, including a million dollar reward for information.
While this is going on Faith Parker, who was in an automobile accident which resulted in a coma has woken up. She has no memories of her life, even her name. She is confused when she begins to have dreams of a man that she seems to be involved with. She has no information on him because she was informed that she did not have a boyfriend of her own.
Confused and lost Faith happens to see a new report about a missing woman and she recognizes the man being interviewed on the screen.
Faith sets out to find Dinah and places herself in constant danger. She is introduced to a Psychic FBI agent, Noah Bishop, who listens to her stories of visions and voices. He has his own powers so he is more likely to understand her even when she is unsure.
The story was very gripping. Kay Hooper draws you into the lives of Faith, Cain, Noah and Dinah in such an intense dramatic way. Each chapter is filled with new visions, new fears and new revelations.
Faith is hands on in the search for her own past as well as the fate of Dinah. She follows leads that Dinah provides psychically as well as the leads that she stumbles upon on her own. Believe me there is no one above suspicion. I found myself distrusting almost everyone at one time or another.
I have found a writer that does suspense so well, that I will be definitely be reading her other romantic suspense novels.
I listened to this as an audiobook and I can tell you that the narrator did an outstanding job. Her pacing was perfect as was her characterization of the voices. The recording I heard did not give her name, but she was great. She brought the story alive with her narration. I did not know this was a second book of a series about Noah Bishop, but now that I do know, I will be reading the first book of the series. The first book is called Stealing Shadows. Just a great book, if you like well written romantic suspense, then you need to read this one.
I did like the first book in the series although it had its flaws. However, I anticipated the story to finally focus on Bishop and the Special Crime Unit. Instead, he is a minor character with barely any importance. There is also some hinting at a big case he is working on but apart from those small details the story focus on two different people. I am not sure if this is what I expected the series to be like. Luckily, I already own book 3 and will read on. Otherwise, I might be tempted to give up.
The main story in 'Hiding in the Shadows' follows Faith, a woman just woken up from a coma, and Kane whose girlfriend Dinah vanished recently. Now, Dinah is an investigative journalist and soon the reader will learn that there is a connection between what happened to Faith and Dinah's fate.
What bothered me the most about the book - maybe a little more than the missing Bishop - was the forced romance. Unfortunately, the romance was a central part of the story and as it didn't work for me, I had a hard time getting through the book. Kane was a strange character to like - his obsession makes him a difficult love interest. Taking into consideration that the main part of the story takes place in a couple of days, I rolled my eyes more than once because of the big feelings involved. Faith was an interesting character but my fascination with her died in the last third of the book. I just hoped for something different. The mystery-part was decent but it lacked the dedication the first book had. I know you can't always read about serial killers but in this case, the 'bad boys' seemed to be a little random.
I still settled for three stars because I like the concept of the book. I just wish the series would find another focus. Please be either a supernatural mystery or a decent romance. Mixing them can work but this far, I am not impressed.
2024 re-read with a friend. My comments haven't changed. Even knowing the ending, the twist didn't work for me.
I am at a loss for words. Hiding in the Shadows is the second book in Kay Hooper’s Bishop/Special Crimes Unit Series. From the first page, the story is action-packed at a pace that doesn’t slow until the final ten to fifteen percent. Like the first book, the key players have the gift of extrasensory perception. In this book, instead of being in the killer's mind, Faith is in the victim's head.
Dinah Leighton is an investigative reporter hot on the trail of a major scandal. Faith Parker is Dinah’s close friend and in a coma after a suspicious accident then Dinah goes missing shortly before Faith comes out of her coma. Faith has a severe case of amnesia. Faith has dreams of Dinah and Kane MacGregor but she is not sure who they are until she sees Kane on the news asking for help to find his fiancée who is missing.
Hiding in the Shadows is full of tension and anxiety. While reading, I suspected every character of being the kidnapper. Bishop, the psychic FBI agent, is a close friend of Kane and Dinah’s. His role in this book is liaison with the local police and some investigative work from Quantico. However, as in the first book, Bishop is not the central focus of the story.
So…what happened? For me, the ending took me from a believable psychic experience to an anti-climactic, unbelievable ending. A story that kept me expecting that every character could be the “bad guy”; hoping the rescuers would get to the crime scene in time to rolling my eyes until I got a headache. I can’t give too much information without revealing the final twist, but it didn’t work for me. This ending took a solid four to five-star story to nothing more than an OK read. I’m sure there are many readers of paranormal who will buy into the conclusion, but it didn't work for me at all.
I’m also disappointed that Hooper continues to dangle Bishop at the reader without giving him a decent storyline. Regardless, the story held my interest through most of the book, so I will give the next one in the series a try in the hope that we will get to know Bishop finally. If that doesn’t happen, I’m not sure I will continue with the series.
I'm not sure I'm the reader for this series. I enjoyed the first book. but in this one something just didn't connect for me. The Noah Bishop character seemed to kinda flit in and out of the plot, not really adding anything to help resolve anything yet he seemed to all knowing. He is still a mystery and likely to remain so for the series. The main characters were Faith, Noah and Dinah. Quite a trio with Faith and Diana sharing physic powers, and Noah. What would have been a good Romantic-Suspense plot got twisted up with the paranormal element and I'm not a fan of how it ended, but I can see that it was the only way. 3 1/2-Stars
Hiding in the Shadows is book two in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit and Shadows by Kay Hooper. One morning Faith Parker became involved in a significant accident that left her in a coma. Dinah Leighton visited her friend every day until the day she disappears. Kane MacGregor Dinah's boyfriend was devastated and ask his childhood friend Noah Bishop for help. When Faith came out of the Coma, join forces with Kane to find her friend Dinah. The readers of Hiding in the Shadows will continue to follow Kane and Faith to find out what happens.
Hiding in the Shadows is another enjoyable book to read by Kay Hooper. I always impressed with the way Kay Hooper incorporates her paranormal plots into her books. Hiding in the Shadows did not disappoint. I love Kay Hooper portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Hiding in the Shadows show a more gentle side of Agent Noel Bishop. Hiding in the Shadows is well written and researched by Kay Hooper. I like Kay Hooper description of the settings of Hiding in the Shadows that compliment the plot of this book.
The readers of Hiding in the Shadows will learn about running an Engineering and Architectural firm. Also, the readers of Hiding in the Shadows will understand the problems that investigative journalist have during their investigations.
I thought it was lacking in a few ways: - Vague bad guys with pretty average motives (unlike the first book that featured a serial killer) - Lack of romance
Also, the twist near the end. I'm not sure how I feel about it. . It's not a new concept. They're called "walk-ins" and supposedly, people claim these things have occurred either to them or those they know.
Anyway, it just seemed a bit weird. Is she Faith? Is she Dinah? Is she a mix? She sort of said she was the "third," the joining of the two. But why, if Dinah could see the future and know her fate, why did she act like she didn't have a future at all (as others commented on)? She had to have known she did - within Faith's body, she'd live on. That didn't really match up. I suppose in a way, at least in regard to dealing with her money, that might makes sense as she'd be Faith now, not Dinah and maybe unable to access things as she used to...but then why not will it to Faith? Also, the relationship angle with Kane...seems sort of complicated now - who is he in love with (Faith, Dinah, both?).
Also, I wanted a HEA for Faith. It's her that's the focus of most of the book. We learn bits about her life as things progress and it would have been nice if she got a HEA after all the pain and bad luck she's had. But then we learn she's not Faith, not really, but Dinah. It just felt like, after spending the whole book focusing of Faith, we never got full closure with that. Just oh, well, Faith passed on in the coma and Dinah took over and here's her HEA. But I didn't really want Dinah's HEA, I wasn't as into her character. She was just part of the plot movement to me, a means to progress Faith and Kane's story...only turns out it wasn't. So the ending was a bit meh to me.
According to my spine tree ring analysis I've read this one maybe four times. It's actually my least favorite of the 13 that I've read. (My favorite is coming soon!)
Faith Parker wakes from a coma that she's been in for six weeks with no memory of herself or her life. She finds out that she had a close friend, Dinah, who was paying all of her medical expenses and set up a trust fund for her. Dinah has since gone missing. Faith has repeated dreams that are part of Dinah's memories.
I don't care for Kane or Faith and the way that this ends is odd for me. In fact, I might give it one star if it wasn't for the fact that I'm willing to occasionally (very occasionally) reread it.
October 2014 — 4 Stars — Not my favorite of Kay Hooper books but good enough I still read it in one sitting.
March 2018 — 3 Stars — Still not my favorite. It feels choppy and disjointed and it resolves just outside my comfort zone of belief and I have a pretty big confort zone. I was not able to read it in one sitting, but as all of the books connect together I knew I needed to read it to get the maximum effect for the third book. Still love this author though and adore this series.
We start out with Dinah and Kane, two people obviously in love and in a relationship, but something holds Dinah back from full commitment. Then we switch to Faith Parker who is just waking up from a coma and we learn that Faith's friend, Dinah was kidnapped 2 weeks earlier. Faith has no memory of her life or who she is, but she dreams of intimate moments with Kane, who she recognizes on the television. She seeks him out and comes to the conclusion that she's dreaming about Dinah's memories...so there must be a connection. Kane, along with his friend (and psychic FBI guy) Bishop, help Faith investigate her life to see if she can give any help in locating Dinah and what she and Faith had learned that might have gotten Dinah kidnapped. Along the way, Faith and Kane fight an attraction which has Kane furious with himself. How can he be falling for Faith when he's still in love with Dinah and so focused on finding her?
Just like with the first one, the suspense here is solid and gripping. I liked that Faith was getting flashbacks of what happened to Dinah and the suspense of what was happening to her regarding her memory and what was hers and what was Dinah's was riveting as well. For me though, this story suffered in the romance department. Kane spends half the story resenting Faith because he's starting to fall for her and he's trying to remember really hard that he's in love with Dinah. His guilt is really well-written and totally believable, but it soured the relationship between Kane and Faith. Not only that, but it has you doubting that happy ending the whole way through the book. Then you learn "the twist" and but it left a sour taste in my mouth overall. Now I'm left with questions about . So the twist kind of felt like a betrayal of my connection with Faith, the character, through this story and I didn't like it. It was definitely a clever (and unseen) twist, but it lessened my overall enjoyment of the story.

Not my cup of tea. Never really got into it. I am not a fan of Paranormal or Psychological novels. I didn't like Gone Girl or Girl on a Train, but least I finished this one!
Hits the spot for light reading, or for me, listening to in audiobook form while doing other things. I really enjoy bestseller mysteries when I'm on the go and can't binge crime TV.
I think I enjoyed this one better than the first one, though I similarly became frustrated that the main character's psychic powers are so cryptic, and therefore seem to be used by the author to create the mini-conflicts and setbacks that at required to make a full-length novel. Once again, Kay Hooper writes a strong, believable, if hastily-drawn (since this is a bestseller series type book and limited in length) female protagonist, and she adds an intriguing twist after the murder is solved.
Including Bishop in a limited role in these books is an interesting strategy, and I'm drawn to continue reading the series to see where his overarching story goes.
Maybe if romantic suspense, doused with unbelievable psychic ability is your thing, this book could be for you, but don't look for poetic prose or characters with any depth.
It was a great read with good characters and a story completely different from the first book except for the psychic angle perhaps. The mystery was gripping.
I think the only reason ending didn't surprise me is because I kinda expected it, like I could sense it coming and since i don't have much faith in the psychic angle too, this came as a wholly different another world experience where anything can happen, thus, I could digest it unlike others.
The plot of the book has been explained by other reviewers so I won't get into it here. Basically, Faith Parker wakes up in a hospital bed with amnesia and a connection to her best friend and spends the story trying to find her friend and afterward find the friend's killer.
I'm an inveterate re-reader, but this book goes into my delete pile rather than the re-read pile because I really didn't like how it ended. Now you can see the plot-twist ending coming from a mile away, but I seriously had faith that the author would either go a different direction or do it in such a way as to make it okay. I really like most of Kay Hooper's writing, but she couldn't succeed in making any of the characters truly likeable. What really get's to me is that even though we really didn't get to know Faith too well, you know she had a hard life with a lot of loss and I really wanted her to have a happy ending and she didn't get one.
It's a fast-paced story toward the end, but I seriously need to at least start a happier one before I go to bed so I can clear the one out of my brain.
Ever read a book you loved and hated at the same time? Well, I think I've come across a whole series that just might be my love/hate relationship this year. I love the stories. I've come to like FBI agent Noah Bishop a lot. I like that he has a gift, and I like that it is close to a psychic ability.
What I don't like is that this second book has made me wonder why we are only getting glimpses of agent Bishop when this series is supposed to be about him. I don't like that they call his ability, the bullshit detector. I don't like that we aren't really getting to know agent Bishop on a personal level.
The ending has intrigued me enough to pick up the next book, because Bishop has been told that he will find evil on his next case, and also find what he has been looking for, to be very careful. Will we finally get to know some of his own history? Gee, hope I hope so!
A psychic thriller about a woman who disappears and another who loses her memory. Chasing down a story gets Dinah Leighton into trouble, and only her friend Faith Parker and her lover Kane can figure it out. But will time run out before Faith and Kane can save her and solve the mystery? A real twist ending, too.
DNF 52% I loved book one but when I started this book it was very different and I didn't enjoy how very slow the story was. I continued with the rest of the series up to book 6 so far and decided to give this story another try. I've stopped half way and even though I love Kay's writing and I'm sure it will get better, life's too short to waste on books you don't love.
I liked this book, though not as much as I liked the book before it, Stealing Shadows. The mystery clung to this until the very end. While you're given enough clues that you might be able to figure it out, it's not easy. You fall in love with the characters and struggle with them through grief. A great story.
Even though I remembered the final twist from previous reads, I still enjoyed the book. Kay Hooper has been one of my favourite authors since her first category romance and was maybe one of the first writers to incorporate paranormal elements into even those books.
This book was no where near as good as the 1st in the series. I didn't feel a connection with the main characters at all, plus there was hardly any background info on the bad guys either. Am I the only one who thought the ending was totally weird? I'm probably being generous with 3 stars.
Well written but a very odd ending. I think the topics of this books are interesting but not sure the authordid a good job of selling it in this book. Not as well done as the first book. Still good enough though for me to continue onto the next in series.
