The new novel from the #1 bestselling author of The Old Ducks' Club! 'I've loved all of Maddie Please's books but this is my favourite so far - superb characters and a warm, wonderful story. Bravo!' **Judy Leigh

Newly single at sixty, Elin Anderson decides it’s finally time for an adventure of her own. With her marriage to tedious Tom now officially over, Elin plans to visit the family she hasn’t seen in years. First Australia!

But going home is harder than Elin thought. Everywhere she turns Elin sees brightness and colour, which only makes her own life seem even more drab and beige. How has she let herself fade away?

Determined to have some fun, Elin reluctantly agrees to join The Silver Surfers – a group of seniors who travel the coast, only caring about their next big adventure. Because life’s too short to watch the ocean when you could be making waves…

There’s only one catch – her road trip companion, Kit Pascoe. Kit is a man who doesn’t know the meaning of the word fun and makes it clear to Elin that this adventure will be subject to his own strict rules.

But with every new day, Elin slowly begins to rediscover who she really is. And she’s certain that rules are meant to be broken…aren’t they?

EXCERPT: Someone switched on the fairy lights that surrounded the Wipe-Out. They were like white stars against the dark sea-scented sky and the whole evening was suddenly unforgettable.
I looked at my aunt and uncle, laughing together across the table, Banjo trying and failing to flip and catch six beer mats at once. Maggie mopping up his spilled beer with a paper napkin and slapping his arm for his clumsiness. Next to me, Rowan and Shane were singing along to a Beatles song, Shane with his arm around her and tapping out the beat with his feet. It was lovely to see how relaxed and carefree they were.
The tears pricked at my eyes. How and why had I stayed away from my lovely family for so long? I'd left Australia filled with optimism and excitement. I'd returned having learned a hard lesson, one that had changed me from a confident, extroverted young woman into someone who had settled for so little when life had so much to offer.

ABOUT 'SUNRISE WITH THE SILVER SURFERS': Newly single at sixty, Elin Anderson decides it’s finally time for an adventure of her own. With her marriage to tedious Tom now officially over, Elin plans to visit the family she hasn’t seen in years. First stop: Australia!

But with every new day, Elin slowly begins to rediscover who she really is. And she’s certain that rules are meant to be broken…aren’t they?

MY THOUGHTS: Maddie Please certainly does - please, that is.

Her books are heartwarming, poignant and fun; her characters lifelike and relatable. I think I was originally married to the same man as Elin; he just used a different name. And funnily enough, Australia was also where I rediscovered the original me. So there was a lot for me to relate to in this read, but that's not the only reason I enjoyed this book.

Maddie Please's writing is full of fun, humor and energy. Her characters are engaging, and I was swept along by the storyline. It is upbeat and enchanting. There is, of course, a certain amount of soul-searching on Elin's part, but it is swamped by her desire to rediscover the person she used to be and not ever to lose her own identity again.

A great alternative title for this book would be 'Elin Grows a Backbone'!

There are lots of laugh-out-loud moments in this read which is funny without being silly. Highly recommended if you're looking for a heartwarming and fun read!

I really enjoy Maddie Please's stories. They have more mature characters, ones that I can identify with, but also they are usually dealing with a time in their lives where they are making changes and trying to figure out what is next for them. That is exactly what I got in this enjoyable story. Sunrise With The Silver Surfers is told by Elin, a 58 year old divorcée had put up with her nasty husband for years, but when she found out he had an affair, she was done. She bought him out of the house and he moved in with his girlfriend and baby mama. When Elin's neighbour dies, she leaves Elin money with the proviso that she use it to travel. With that unexpected gift, she is returning to Australia to see her family for the first time in years. She has quite the adventure while there, reconnecting with her sister and other family adventures. With romance far from her mind, seeing it happen with a younger man was wonderful, even with the blips along the way.

I loved Elin. When we first meet her she is a bit wishy washy, with little self-confidence when dealing with her ex-husband, but seeing her grow a backbone as the story progressed was wonderful. I was a widow by the time I was 59, so I was able to relate to the suddenly single Elin, although my marriage was a happy one. The Silver Surfers were a hoot. They loved to party and were so full of enthusiasm, I would love to meet up with them and maybe even learn to surf. I didn't love all the characters as the story began, but as I got to know them better and saw their various strengths and personalities they grew on me. Once again, Maddie Please has penned a wonderful, humorous, touching story of family, friendship, new beginnings and romance all with characters over the age of 55. I definitely recommend this one.

Favorite Quotes:

I’m so hungry I could eat a horse and chase the jockey!

The Silver Surfers. They’re having an eightieth birthday party and it’s going to be a belter.

Well, we don’t go bungee jumping, or white-water rafting… Norm did that once and lost his false teeth. We’re not daft.

I then had a mental image of a field full of pensioners staggering around on Zimmer frames, listening to big-band music and comparing prescription regimes.

‘...and the Deadbeat Rockers are going to be playing this evening. I went to school with Vince. When he takes his false teeth out, he can put two snooker balls in his mouth at once.’ Well, that wasn’t a sentence I’d ever expected to hear.

‘All the blokes I meet online are fakes too,’ Lulu said taking a slug of her drink, ‘they say they are tall and fit and handsome and when they turn up, they aren’t any of those things. The last one I agreed to meet looked like a retired sumo wrestler who’d been smacked in the face with a frying pan. I’m beginning to think all men are liars.’

My Review:

This was good fun, I adore the witty and vivacious prose of Maddie Please, her clever humor always keeps me smirking and chirping with glee. The storylines were highly amusing and unfailingly entertaining while populated with a wide variety of endearing and cleverly depicted Aussie eccentrics, from right mongrels to proper Bettys. However, I confess to having to Google some of the slang. Strewth!

Elin, originally from Australia, makes a return trip for a much needed break so she can have a good catch up with her family and friends. The trip couldn’t come at a more better time as her divorce is now final and apart from her grown up son, there isn’t anything to tie her down.

Wow, this author knows how to get across the gorgeous setting in this novel! Everything seemed to come alive when Elin lands in Australia. I could hear the waves as well as the birds along with vivid colours jumping out at me. I almost felt like I was there. It was great to see Elin slowly transform herself from the person she was back in the UK where from her lifestyle to her dress sense was quite bland. Back in her home land however, she starts to find herself and remembers who she was and what she liked before her marriage to her ex-husband Tom. You get a real sense of Elin feeling carefree and it was easy to get caught up in all those wonderful feelings.

Life in the land down under definitely feels more laid back. Kit, however, the love interest, seems to be a workaholic and things get off to a bit of a bumpy start between him and Elin. The unexpected road trip they find themselves on sounded so idyllic and I was very envious that I wasn’t actually there in person but glad that reading of their trip, that I was somehow experiencing it alongside them. Even if it was only in my dreams!

Maddie Please is one of my go to authors for wonderfully uplifting stories that are set in places that I would love to go to and Sunrise with the Silver Surfers was no exception. It was vibrant, colourful, humorous, uplifting and so much more! This really was a delight to read and can’t recommend it highly enough if you are looking for a feel-good read that is guaranteed to be the perfect pick-me-up.

My thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to be part of the tour. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

What an absolute joy of a book this was! Recently divorced and thus very much single, Elin is on her way to Australia, her country of birth, for a long overdue trip back home. Just shy of 60, Elin decides to tackle her trip with a few "firsts":

*Fly Business Class
*Drink as much champagne as being offered to you
*Talk to the handsome stranger in the airport/on the flight/you meet at your homecoming party (this might or might not be the same person)
*Don't answer your ex-husband's texts
*Do get rid of the boring, English wardrobe and bring some color to your suitcase
*Do let your hair down and put on your bathers
*Travel across Australia in a campervan

From the first page, this book was nothing but fun. I loved Elin's voice, especially her inner-voice made me laugh out loud more than once. Through humor and a whole lot of reflection on her life in England, Elin discovers that the girl she left behind in Australia and the woman who returns 20 odd years later, can somehow still be the same person.

A journey back to yourself is never fun taking on alone. (Unless you are Cheryl Strayed) Reconnecting with her family in Australia and meeting a whole new bunch colorful characters and of course the Silver Surfers, brings out the girl who used to love having fun and who always smiled in the family photos.

As a South African, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's description of life in the Land Down Under. We really do have very similar cultures, weather and beautiful scenery. Especially the vast coastlines. I can understand why so many South Africans immigrate to Australia!

This was my first time reading anything by Maddie Please, but please can I read more books by her. She sure has a talent to combine, humor, quirky characters and serious ones, descriptive scenery with romance and an intriguing plot line. This will not be our last Maddie Please, that I'm sure of.

Oh I do love a book that features a road trip, and a road trip in a place I've never visited even better,

I was totally alongside Elin as she and Kit return Aunt Maggie's campervan from Cairns to Sydney, taking in a lot of sights on the way, and learning a lot more about each other too.

Elin has returned to Australia for the first time in many years, leaving behind her unpleasant ex-husband, and her needy grown up son.

And she soon can;t work out why she has stayed away for so long, And in hte processes rediscovers true self too.

It's a really enjoyable romp around Australia, featuring characters in the prime of their life, having the times of their lives. It was a true joy to read.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Enjoyed!

This was a wonderful book, showing that there is truly life after divorce, and that you have to ability to change who you are at any age! Full of age-positive examples, from young 20-somethings to more mature "Silver Surfers", a fun group of friends who travel around Australia, surfing, laughing and staying young.

Elin was in a rut after her divorce. Her son is away at school, has his own relationship and she's at home on her own, with occasional annoying updates from her ex-husband on his new wife and baby. She decides to take a trip home to Australia to spend time with her sister and other family/friends, and on that trip she discovers a person she didn't know was inside of herself.

Give this a try: its a quick read, well-written, funny and warm. You'll thank me!

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

I learned of this book via this post: https://carlalovestoread.wordpress.co...

My Interest

I’ve come to rely on feel good books to keep me going right now! Judy Leigh is my favorite, but until the new one comes out I have only ONE left in her back list so I’m rationing! I thought this one sounded super-fun and, having enjoyed another book by this author AND since it’s from the same publisher as Judy’s books I thought it would be great for my commute.
The Story

Divorced from over-bearing husband Tom, Elin takes money she has inherited from a friend and goes home to Australia. She never really planned to stay in the UK, but she met Tom, got married, had her son Dan and, well, life happened. Now nearing 60 she’s decided it is time to go see her sister and other relatives. She gives herself a big treat and buys a Business Class airline seat. In the special departures lounge she meats a handsome Aussie businessman, Kit, and, well…likes him.

Arriving in Sydney she is whisked off to the beach and her sisters home. Rowan, a bit younger than Elin lives with aging surfer (beach bum) Shane. At her welcome home party Ellen is shocked when the charming business man show up in a bad mood and all but ruins the party.

When her aunt Maggie and Uncle “Banjo” (Bernard) [the name, Americans, is a nod to Aussie poet, Banjo Paterson–click to read about him] love life in their motor home and hang out on the road with a group of Senior Citizens who call themselves the Silver Surfers. When they have an emergency and have to have someone get the motorhome back to Sydney, Rowan accept the challenge. Any guesses who her co-pilot will be? [No Spoilers]
My Thoughts

I liked the friendships in the book, I liked the way Elin and her family bantered and, especially, how Elin grew emotionally stronger in this story. She says something (I didn’t get to stop and write it down–sorry) about just wanting to feel “something” for a change. I totally understood.

This was such a fun book! I’m only a very few years older than Elin, so I could relate to her in every way. The other people in the story were nice and were the sort of folks you’d want to know in real life. No stereotypes of an 80 year old needing a walker and having to have applesauce to get all their evening pills down. These were people still in the game–still living no matter their age. I loved that.

Boldwood Books publishes Feel Good Fiction and I’m all for it! (They also publish Judy Leigh who I love). This is my second Maddie Please book (my first review is linked at the end of this post) and it won’t be my last.
My Verdict
4.0

Just plain fun!

I listened to the audio book.

Elin has the adventure of a lifetime when she visits her sister in Australia and joins The Silver Surfers on a road trip! Her life has been so boring and bland but not any more as she ditches her colourless clothes and buys herself some new bright clothes. Beautiful journey which I followed and had a few laughs along the way.

Sunrise with the Silver Surfers is another winner from Boldwood Books. Once again, I found a book with an older woman at the center, trying to live her best life after divorce, and finding love again. It’s refreshing to read because so many books concentrate on couples in their mid-20’s or early 30’s.

I had a friend who spent a semester in Australia in a student exchange program, and later returned to visit for a year around the time of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. When she moved back to the U.S., she lived with my husband and myself for a while and told us many stories about the land down under. But with this book, I felt I actually got a better feeling of portions of the country through the vivid descriptions of locales.

The choices Elin makes as an older woman with years of experience, yet years of a dominating husband, make sense within the context of the story. That is to say, she doesn’t do anything that seemed out of character for a 58-year-old woman. The contrast with her sister, who has always lived life a little more carefree, was both refreshing and frustrating because of her sister’s lazy boyfriend.

I thought the slow burn of the relationship with Kit was handled well, especially because of Elin’s previous relationship with ex-husband Tom. And while there’s romance in the book, there’s no graphic sex scenes if you’re worried about that. I knew there was going to be some conflict that the two would have to overcome, because that’s how these sorts of books work out, so I wasn’t surprised when it happened, and I knew there would be a resolution in the right direction, but I was surprised at how long it took to get there. Elin made the smart choice to take her time, and I applaud her for it.

Surprisingly, the part of the book with the Silver Surfers was remarkably small, all things considered. Makes me wonder why that title was chosen. Also makes me wonder if there really is a Silver Surfers group that has clubs around Australia.

The sight-seeing around Australia was great, I really got a feel for some of the areas discussed. I know almost nothing about the country so it was a great little travelogue like a Nancy Drew book. 🙂

Elin’s ex-husband was a piece of work, for sure. Reminds me of someone close to me who had a domineering, belittling husband who made her feel like she had no self-worth. She and Elin stayed because of the kids, but eventually had the strength to break free from the toxicity of the partner in her life. The fact that Elin’s ex-husband moved on so quickly with another woman and a new child, then keeps reaching out to Elin when things don’t work out so well with the new wife is telling. I’m so glad Elin was portrayed as a woman who had found the strength to tell her ex to bugger off and stay out of her life.

Once again, I’ve found a great read at a reasonable price. Highly recommend!

I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book from NetGalley and Boldwood Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Ellen is a 58-year-old Australian/European who has been living in England for more than 20 years. She is also a divorced mother and her son Dan is 28 with the his own flat and live in girlfriend sky. Her ex blindsided her by leaving her for a 35-year-old who was pregnant with his baby and although he is unhappy and still needy she doesn’t even give it a thought when flying off to Australia. She is so excited she has it been back since she left to teach in England and a good looking man who chatted with her while waiting in business class didn’t hurt her excitement at all. She is so excited when she arrives in Australia to see her sister Rowan her aunt Maggie and her uncle banjo. She does feel bad when she finds out things they didn’t tell her while living in England one of those things was that her aunt Maggie and uncle banjo belong to a silver surfers club that travel around Australia in their RVs and would be going on a trip in just a few days. She is also shocked when the good looking man from business class shows up and she learns he is Rowan‘s live-in boyfriend Shane’s older brother Kip. This time their meeting goes totally upside down and when Kip leaves after arguing with his brother Shane Rowan insinuates he isn’t the best guy. So win a few days later they get a call saying their uncle banjo has had an accident and someone must fly to Baccaroo and drive the RV back home she says she is willing to go but doesn’t know if she could drive the RV. This is when Shane says he has a bright idea he gets his brother Kip to agree to go with her and he even pays for the flights. At first Ellen acts in different to kip NSF she could either take him or leave him but soon the chemistry and energy between them is something they can’t deny. They even extend the road trip back to include vacation sites but best of all they get to be with each other and by the time they make it back to Sydney Rowan is worried about her. After all her and Shane don’t have the highest opinion of his brother in the next morning Shane makes it perfectly clear the type of man Kip is. Ellen is crushed. Are the things Shane and Rowan saying True were the the feelings they shared in the Australian outback real? She doesn’t know what to think or who to believe what she does know is she isn’t talking to Kip again. I know it may look like I told the whole story but trust me when I say there is so much more to this great story. If you were looking for a pick me up in a great middle-age romance or romance of any kind you need to read “sunrise with the silver surfers. “You will be wanting to go to the outback to find this group of octogenarians. they’re so lovable this book is so good I absolutely loved it trust me when I say this is such a great book, not only that you will end this book with such a great happy feeling and wanting to go to the Australian outback in an RV. Great books or something I have come to expect with BoldwoodBooks and this one is no exception. I received it from NetGalley and BoldwoodBooks but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

This time, Maddie Please transported me to Australia and the sights that I have only seen in magazines or on the TV. We are introduced to Elin who left the Australian shores and married decades before. She has never been back to visit her home and family. Her insipid husband had started a new life with a much younger model and was again experiencing the joys of fatherhood. Sadly, he was failing to find the joys and Elin firmly believed that it wasn’t her problem. She’s now sixty and single and is determined to recapture the feelings of her life in Australia.
I just adored Elin and had multiple laugh-out-loud moments. She was hilarious with the right mixture of self-deprecation and a genuine lack of guile. Her relationship with her sister has remained strong as a result of virtual and physical visits to the UK. As I mentioned, this was Elin’s first trip back to Oz and her first time meeting her sister’s partner, Shane. He was the epitome of what I would imagine as a ‘beach bum’; laid back with a lackadaisical attitude to work and commitment. Conversely, we meet Shane’s brother, Kit. Initially, he is charm personified, but then Elin sees another side to him which is somewhat less attractive
So, if you’ve read the synopsis, you’ll know that Elin and Kit are thrown together as they set out to recover a motorhome that Elin’s aunt and uncle cannot drive home. This is where the greater story evolves, and we get to know Elin and Kit more deeply.
I was completely captivated by Elin and Kit’s adventure. The descriptions of beauty spots, tourist attractions, and sunsets were a love letter to anyone dreaming of an Antipodean adventure. I could almost hear the surf breaking on the sand and imagine the joys of an extended road trip with someone who makes you laugh.
This is a joyful book that I absolutely adored. Another win for the more mature woman and a gorgeous helping of sun, fun, and sexy adventures. What a wonderful escape this was, I would love to go back!

An enjoyable example of a"you're never too old to have fun or find love" story. As the book starts, Elin is heading to her homeland of Australia after the end of her marriage to a controlling narcissistic jerk. She's having a ball enjoying the travel in business class--from the drinks to the warm cloths they hand out. And she has even more fun when she gets to Australia to visit her sister, and she meets some very interesting characters, including one who is either a dream or a dud, depending on who you ask. A fun read, especially if you're a certain age. And it may inspire you to book a trip to the land down under.

When Elin and Tom divorced after 34 years of marriage an elderly neighbor wills Elin money and tells her to see what she's missing. Elin decides to go home to Australia to see her sister and the aunt and uncle who raised them and avoid Tom, his new wife, and baby.

Setting out on her adventure she books her ticket in business class, something Tom would never do. Sitting in the business class lounge she strikes up a conversation with another passenger, a handsome gentleman about her age and says goodbye to him in Australia thinking she would never see him again.

Reunited with her sister Elin is having a wonderful visit until her uncle fell off a ladder and needs someone to drive his motor home back home. Taking the long way home, Elin and her sister's France's brother set off to see the sights and have adventures.

The first thing that drew me in is the quirky characters. The second is just waiting for Tom the ex to get what he has coming to him.

Silver Surfers is a love story about couples and how many different types of relationships there are. It's also a story that shows how different, and the same, people are no matter their ages.

I loved this book and the travel around Australia and I thank NetGalley for the ARC. I hope you like this book as much as I did.

This was a fabulous audiobook. I loved every single minute of it and laughed out loud and smiled lot! The story was told by Elin, a 58 year old divorcee who was on her way to Australia for the first in years. I loved Elin she was brilliant. A real woman with doubts and fears, but not a so timid that she didn’t speak her mind at times. I really liked all the silver surfers too, friends of her aunt and uncle who drove around Australia in their mobile homes, still living life to the full in their seventies. I loved the narration by Penelope Freeman, especially her Aussie accents, they were great fun. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a fun romance with older characters, especially on audio.

As an English lady living in Australia since I was a teenager I could relate to all the characters. I am married to my very own silver surfer who has chilled me out so much. My home town of Wollongong was mentioned also, locals call it the Gong. Loved all of the book and couldn't put it down, couldn't wait to see what happened next. A must read 😍

This was my first by Maddie Please but it certainly won't be my last. Very much in my preferred style, and the fact that I read the wedding chapter instead of skimming over it as I often do, says a lot. I like ordinary people stories with believable endings, and this one was exactly that.

An engaging, light-hearted book about finding love in the golden years

I found this book entertaining, and laughed out loud at various points. The characters are well-drawn, and I enjoyed the Australian slang. While the book seemed to begin quite slowly, I kept reading and am glad I did! I have enjoyed other books by this author, and I think other readers will find this one delightful.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My first novel by Maggie Please and what a wonderful, light hearted, summery one Sunrise with the Silver Surfers is!

Elin had divorced her husband who she had been married to for 30 years. Her friend unfortunately died and left her some money on the condition that she went travelling. Originally from Australia, Elin decides she is going to visit her sister and books herself a business class seat - she had never been able to do this while she was married. Meeting a good looking man in the airport lounge, Elin starts to wonder about herself. At a welcome home party, a surprise visitor to get sisters boyfriend happened to not only be his brother but the gorgeous man she met on the plane; turns out he not as nice as she thought!

A fantastic read, highly recommend

Elin is a recently divorced woman about to embark on a trip from England to Australia to visit her sister Rowan and her other relatives. She arrives in Australia to find that she not only missed her family but that her ex husband Tom had kept her from really enjoying her life. She is now free of his controlling ways and ready to start a new life.

This book was absolutely delightful. A fun and fast read with perfect character descriptions of Australia and the beautiful scenery. It was a perfect example of how it’s never too late to start over in life, no matter your age.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading a “feel good” book about life and the many possibilities that exist if you keep your mind and heart open.

Lovely

Even if this was a little predictable I really enjoyed it. The descriptions of the scenery were just brilliant, almost like you were there. I loved rowan and Shane, Maggie and banjo, and the main characters Elin and Kit. A lovely easy read
