The second and final arc of CLAMP’s masterwork Magic Knight Rayearth, with a new translation and new design! After the tragedy of the Emeraude and Zagato, Cefiro has been plunged into chaos. Now the Magic Knights have been summoned just as time is running out to find Cefiro's pillar…but what is their role in all of this, and is there any way to change Cefiro's cruel system?
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Back in their own world, Hikaru, Umi and Fuu still can't forget the tragic end of their journey in Cephiro. Wondering what has become of that world, the trio gathers with a mutual wish in mind; to return to Cephiro and see what has become of it. To their dismay, it seems to be falling apart and is even facing invasion from other worlds. The Magic Knights are preparing to defend Cephiro, but what the world really needs is a new Pillar.
I find Magic Knight Rayearth II quite a bit more engaging than its prequel. It fixes up some of the old repetitiveness and has a more intriguing plot. Unfortunately, it does also bring some new problems of its own.
The pacing is much improved compared to the first half of the story, though it is by no means perfect. While the story progresses at a logical and good pace, three volumes are simply too short to really convey the relationships and bonds that form in this story. That being said, I was pleased to see some relationships develop - I don't need a bucket load of romance, but I do love to have at least a bit sprinkled somewhere. All three of the Magic Knights now have a love interest - some of which were already hinted at in the prequel and others that are wholly new. While I definitely appreciate the three couples, there simply isn't enough time for them to develop in a convincing way. Fuu's is probably still the most solid pairing as she was already acquainted with her love interest in the first arc.
Hikaru has improved as a character, she is still my least favourite of the three, but she has matured and isn't overly naive anymore. However, I am rather disappointed in her taking centre stage over the other two, given that the plot generally focused on them concurring obstacles through their friendship. I was also most disappointed with her romantic development because, while I found her love interest the most interesting, she remained too bloody dense until the very last page - poor guy.
The plot takes a strong focus on what it means for one single person being burdened with an entire world's responsibility and whether Princess Emeraude's fate could have been prevented. I quite like how the characters question the rules of Cephiro and how one should work together to make for a better world. As the plot wasn't concerned with the Magic Knights' trials anymore, but rather focused on finding a new Pillar and whether or not having one was even necessary, there was a lot less repetitiveness and the outcome was a lot less predictable than in the first part.
While the villains of the first half were by no means brilliant, I was sorry to see that the sequel's were just downright pathetic. They were so silly and unconvincing in their ambitions that it wasn't even comedic anymore. Nonetheless, they did turn out to be valuable characters when one considers how the story concluded. While once again wrapped up quite abruptly, it was a satisfying ending where the characters finally achieved happiness and room to imagine what Cephiro's future might look like.
Rayearth is one of those interesting series broken up into parts. While this is volume four if this series, it's labeled as "Part Two: Book One." In the 25th Anniversary Edition, Part Two is in a different boxed set than Part One.
Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are still reeling from their major battle that closed out Part One. The three try to adjust back to normal life, but the weight of what happened in Cefiro weighs heavy on them. The three meet up in Tokyo Tower again to try to come to terms with what has happened when suddenly, they are transported again! This time, the world they enter is in shambles. The ocean is gone, the sky is black, and the only thing they can see is a castle standing tall above a jagged, rocky island. The three are taken to the castle, where they reunite with what’s left of the old cast, and they are told what grim fate has befallen Cefiro. They also discover that there are several invading forces from other worlds desperately clawing at Cefiro’s borders, all vying for the chance to install themselves as a new ruler. Our Magic Knights pick up the mantle once again in defense of this once-beautiful world.
This new story arc begins with a sense of dread and immediacy that only built over time in Part One. The grizzly ending of Part One has completely colored this story arc, so don’t go into this volume thinking the ladies will be questing and leveling up in their signature happy-go-lucky way. There are many new characters to get used to, and plenty of them seem ill-intended, so it can be difficult to decide which is the big baddy.
This is a beautiful series, not overly long at 6 volumes total, but it can be difficult to find outside of this 25th Anniversary collector's edition (which is pretty pricy!). Until it gets a reprint in a standard volume, this might be a series that sits on a To-Purchase pile for a while. Sara's Rating: 10/10 Suitability Level: Grades 5-12
Review of vol. 1: here. Review of vol. 2: here. Review of vol. 3: here.
This was an intense introduction that included more great panels about friendship, however I'm really nervous about where things go from there. There is so much intro that's going to have to be resolved in just two volumes! Can the creators pull it off?!
Okay, so it's a bit confusing to read a "backwards" (right to left) manga, but not as hard as I thought. Some parts were a bit strange, and I found myself lost at times, but overall I enjoyed the story. I do think it would be helpful to read Rayearth I first, but now that I sort of know what's going on, I might read the other books to see how the story resolves.
Readers get a closer look at Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu’s lives on Earth; their families, how they’re trying to cope with what happened to them before they’re drawn back together, drawn back to Cephiro. Only who summoned them? Cephiro is in greater danger than before of disappearing altogether now that it’s lost its Pillar. The Magic Knights’s former friends and foes struggle to survive, to save their land while reeling from Princess Emeraude’s loss. Invaders from other lands approach, but what do they want? They may be enemies, but are their motivations as complex as Zagato’s were?
All of this awaits the young girls from another world who are a little wiser, a little more mature than they were at the beginning. All of this is expressed in elaborate panels which give the characters exquisite beauty and a mythic grandeur as the world of will and heart reveals that it is as fragile and strong as the dreams and wishes that created it. Enemies have handsome brothers, romantic motivations, and aren’t always what they seem. Guardians and weaponmasters can only guide them so far. At a certain point the Magic Knights have to make their own chocies, but they’re trying hard to make certain they’re informed by their mistakes. At the same time Cephiro is locked in a pattern which may lead to an inevitable sacrifice or tragedy. Or can sacrifice and tragedy be avoided? These deeper themes enhance and touch each panel’s simple dialogue, creating a bigger picture.
This is a lovely fairytale about maturing and coping with difficult choices, lightened by the hope that the characters will be able to make better choices. The mystery of the invaders along with the conflict they present engaged my sympathy and interest, even while I understood the protagonists had no choice but to fight them. Heartfelt and powerful, this volume leaves the reader wondering just how everything will be resolved.

Bueno bueno, hello there!
This was the very first anime I had ever watched over and over on VHS. I knew every line by heart. But the VHS was only three parts and it never ended the story. It wasn't until years later that I bought the two seasons and watched what happened. But I still have not finished the second season so I do not know how this story will end.
The anime added a lot of fluff to the story. The manga is more straightforward with the story. It's short, but gives you enough time to build some sort of care for what's at stake. There are also new very important characters to the anime that do not exist in this manga. I'm curious to see how the story plays out
If you're into the magical girl genre, you need to know this story. It's a very powerful story that teaches you a lot about our hearts and strengths and what we will do to live the life we want. Oh, and there are also giant mecha. It's got it all! Haha The second half feels more sci-fi than magical, but it's touching upon a very important and dark theme from the first half.
The reason I'm not giving 5 stars, is because I still feel rushed through some of the explanations between the new characters. Can't wait to see where this leads though!
The three magical girls are back in the mysterious land of Cephiro for a second adventure! They don't know who summoned them to this alien world, but they have their weapons and the Mashin spirits to help them fight, this time against invaders from neighboring worlds. Without a Pillar to hold the planet together, Cephiro is literally falling apart, and only the three Magic Knights can defend this world until someone new can take on the job of being the Pillar.
All the same things that I liked and disliked about the first volumes still hold true. The plot is obvious, the characters lack depth, and the action artwork is confusing. But the girls are cute! and I like the pretty artwork, and the adorable characters and their sweet friendships.
I'm interested to find out about the various new characters, and villains from other worlds, and see where their stories will lead. And it's lovely to see the girls reunited with their old friends from the previous books!
I like having a fun fluffy read to enjoy. Even though it's not amazingly complex story, it's still entertaining.
The first book in the sequel trilogy of Magic Knight Rayearth. It was exciting to join characters from the first book as they try to navigate the heartbreak that ended the first trilogy. The three girls, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, aren't sure how they're supposed to feel about what they did as magic knights - but when they're summoned back to Cephiro, they are quick to take on the responsibility of protecting the kingdom once more.
The new characters are fun, but most seem to exist purely to create conflict and not because they have much of their own motivation. Still, the core three remain wonderful characters, full of hope and promise.
3.5 stars. I reread the first series last year, and finally got around to the second series now. I think overall the writing is a lot stronger, with fewer repetitions, and there’s some good character growth/introspection. I only remember bits and pieces of this series so I’m excited to be rereading them. I can’t say why I’m not giving it 4 stars, except that it just doesn’t quite feel there yet.
This is a reread; it’s probably my third. It still touches my heart, and I’m ready for the shock and twists to follow. I love the different pairings even though I know none of them truly get developed. I just really respect how every character has their motives and the crazy way this world sustains itself.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
