CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

This is a review for whole series: Magic Knight Rayearth and Magic Knight Rayearth 2.

This manga is my first ever read work by CLAMP. The art is as beautiful as people talk, I can't argue with it. The art is the biggest contribution for enjoying this manga.

I bought this manga when I didn't aware about manga intended to boys/girls market. As a boy myself (when I read it. Now I am a naughty old boy :P), I found the story standard.

If I read the manga now, I would say the story is obviously predictable with thin characters. But to find the worst aspect of this manga, I should read until the end.

If part 1 has a so-so story, part 2 is worse. If in other standard stories, the fantasy world is expanding as the story progressing, in the Rayearth universe the fantasy world is SHRINKING significantly and could disappear unless the protagonists do something about it. The plot is reminding me of "The Neverending Story" movie.

What I don't like about the shrinking world of this story is: on part 1, I only got a glimpse of the fantasy world (not much details like the daily lives, castles, people, etc.) then on part 2 I got even less. The magical world feels so tiny, with no details.

And still the setting could be forgivable with good plots/characters. But alas, that is not the case. The antagonists of both parts have defeatist attitude. Different characters of each parts, but the same attitude. The climax of part 1 is better than part 2, so expect the stories getting worse and worse.

Disclaimer: I received a review copy for via NetGalley, and am voluntarily and happily leaving my honest thoughts. Many thanks to the publisher, Kodansha Comics, for the opportunity!

Growing up, I was absolutely a CLAMP girl! 😂 On top of that, Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the first manga series that caught my attention in general! So returning to this first volume for the first time in over 20 years was quite the nostalgic trip!! Having not read the original in forever, I wouldn't be able to comment specifically on the differences, but I can say that the translation notes at the end of the book were definitely a nice touch, and the diction in this version still absolutely sticks true to the characters while still keeping a somewhat modern feel!

There have definitely been manga that I reread that made me think, "This is definitely something from the early 2000s" and I didn't get too much of '90s vibes at all in the writing. Part of that is probably because it's so nostalgic to me that I knew I was going to love that too, but honestly, Magic Knight Rayearth just has a very timeless story to it. It's a great entry in the magical school girls trope, and I love all three of our main girls. The characters in Cephiro are also great, and seeing everyone again definitely makes me want to reread the whole thing.

VIDEO REVIEW HERE: https://youtu.be/vo4ww6mW_Cs

This was excellent!!

I started reading this series last summer and probably made it about halfway through what is considered volume two. It is honestly just as good as when I first read it back then!

The art is INCREDIBLE and the storytelling is so engaging! I absolutely love all three girls and how powerful the story is! This one line sums it up well:

"The heart that believes is the greatest power here."

SO. GOOD!

I'm excited about the latest character we met and really looking forward to dive into the next volume!

Also I will say that buying these special editions was totally worth it because seeing the art "blown up" has really made me pause and appreciate all the gorgeous art!

Review for complete series

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are not even acquainted when fate draws them together; a blinding light transports them from Tokyo to the magical land of Cephiro. Once there, they find that in order to return home, they must save Cephiro by rescuing Princess Emeraude who is the keeper of peace. To do so, they must set out on a journey to become the legendary Magic Knights!

Magic Knight Rayearth I screams "90's Manga" - that can be a good or bad thing depending on your personal preference. As someone who has a weak spot for 90's manga, it ticks a lot of the right boxes for me. Yet there's also quite a lot wrong with it and I can't help but feel that this particular series works better as an anime - and that is coming from someone who generally doesn't like anime.

Looking at the good, the art is gorgeous - but hey, it's CLAMP, what do you expect? I must also say that I find this to be one of their more feminine works. While they generally draw shoujo manga, I've often found their works to be quite gender neutral - something both boys and girls can appreciate. Magic Knight Rayearth I, however, is definitely more suited for female readers.

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are instantly likeable. While they aren't the most outstanding characters I've ever come across, they've all got their individual traits and they form a harmonious trio. I also love all three of their designs, especially Umi and Fuu's. Then again, I might be a little biased as Hikaru was overall my least favourite of the trio - she was a little too much on the naive side for my liking. I do also like naive characters, but Hikaru just didn't work as well for me as the other two did. In any case, they're still a strong trio and despite the short time they've known each other, I found their friendship to be perfectly believable and thus giving the story a nice touch of companionship and importance of friendships.

Typical for 90's, and not just for manga, is the portal-fantasy element. I do love a good story where ordinary characters from our world are whisked off to a fantasy land where they must save the day. Magic Knight Rayearth I pretty much follows this formula by the book, from the kind ruler who summons them into Cephiro, the old mentor who sends them off on their journey, the villain who throws one obstacle after the other their way, treasure-hunt-like trials, plenty of enemies to get in their way and an animal sidekick (speaking of which, Mokona is adorable - I want one!). For better or for worse, the characters themselves make a lot of references to video games. The plot and world do indeed resemble a fantasy game structure, yet I must confess that I found the constant comparisons rather tiring after a while.

Repetitiveness was a general issue I had with this manga. It followed the said portal-fantasy and gaming patterns a little too much to the point that things just seemed to repeat themselves. All three main characters had to undergo very similar trials which were dished out one after the other without much alterations between them. The constant wave of new enemies and the means of defeating them were equally monotone. To top it off, this series has some serious pacing issues - and that's something I don't usually see with CLAMP. Three volumes are a pretty tight squeeze to pull this kind of adventure story off. The beginning was a little slow while the end just threw everything at you. There was little time for contemplating the events and that really took away from the emotion the ending was aiming for.

In terms of story-telling, I actually consider this a pretty weak series. That being said, I've grown really fond of the trio and there's actually a lot of potential. It is certainly not a series to simply be dismissed, though one shouldn't expect it to be an awe-inspiring adventure either. This is only the first half of the series, and while it does come to a conclusion, everything does come to a rather abrupt end which definitely begs for the sequel to be read.

[Thanks to Kodansha and Netgalley for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.]

When three separate schools head for Tokyo Tower, it’s a chance meeting between Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. But they won’t really get to know one another until a wish from the imperilled princess of another world drags them off on an adventure like no other.

Well, it was like no other at the time anyway.

Nostalgia works in funny ways. I have zero experience with Magical Knights Rayearth, but I certainly know all about CLAMP. And I also have great fondness for the era of anime and manga where Tokyo Tower was somehow the place where literally everything happened (shout out to Tenchi Muyo in Love).

Thus, I was predisposed to enjoy this the moment it started and, while it is so very much of its era, the notion of magical girl isekai is one that probably should have been tapped into a few more times by now.

The girls come into this in broad strokes - Hikaru is the feisty one and definitely feels like she’s leading the trio simply by inertia. Meanwhile, Umi is the more aloof and refined one, leaving Fuu as the more pragmatic and smart one. That their uniforms and personalities colour code them to the elements of fire, water, and air is no coincidence, shall we say.

Clearly for a younger audience, I think there’s a lot here that would make this more than suitable. It’s perhaps a little too silly at times - we are definitely in the chibi era, although Sailor Moon was much worse - and it can undercut its gravitas with jokes.

The characters are all pretty one note so far - the bad guy has exactly one motivation, which is ‘do evil’ and the girls really don’t get fleshed out too much. The story wastes precious little time, occasionally to its detriment. When they get their weapons and suddenly reveal they ALL have combat training, it’s a little overboard.

While it mostly gets the job done and sells this new world - I do love the huge mystical beasts that keep showing up - some of the laughs that this generates are entirely at it rather than with it.

Clef kind of gets on the nerves after a while, which is too bad as he’s the one who gives the girls the lowdown once they’ve arrived, so he’s on the page quite a bit. Still, he’s at least counting on the trio to save the day, so he has more faith than, say, Tuxedo Mask.

Still, and this is probably down to me, when he proclaims that their clothes are too flimsy for their survival, but his solution is… their same clothes, just with a couple plates of armour on it? I nearly burst out laughing. Sometimes this is magical girl, but mostly it’s indeed isekai.

They get the genre trappings - cool gear and a mascot - and then are off to the races to try and earn their powers, save the day, and get themselves home. In regard to most current isekai that are boring power fantasies, this one decides to have a quest and that makes it more interesting by default.

I’m not one for CLAMP’s art here. It’s never been my favourite style to begin with, so that doesn’t help, but there are a few great moments. There’s a picture of the girls circled by their individual elements that works a treat and, yeah, the beasts are so fun. That flying fish was stellar.

But, if I ignore the things that wouldn’t bother somebody younger, is this still good? Yeah, I think it holds up. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu start off way more dependable than most of their contemporaries and that’s pretty cool. I think a younger audience would find the comedy more enjoyable too (I’m just a curmudgeon).

With pretty much no objectionable content - one skirt flip gets stopped very fast - this is one of those rare manga that truly earns the title of ‘all ages’ and that’s a pretty solid recommend on its own.

3.5 stars - not exceptional, but I enjoyed this enough that I would totally read more of it and see where things lead from there. If you don’t mind some aspects that do show the age a little, it’s a great reminder of what good manga of that era could do.

Classics never get old, but what if they get an update such as a new translation of CLAMP’s masterpiece Magic Knight Rayearth?

I’ve always been a fan of the anime adaptation, but I must admit that in all those years I’ve never read the manga. This time, however, I didn’t let the opportunity pass me by, because the teenager in me came back in full force and demanded that I read it without a second thought! I don’t know about you, but I always listen to my inner voice—especially if it comes from the past and gets angry—and, as practically always, it never disappoints me. Just as the three middle school students are suddenly transported into a magical world, readers are also drawn into a mythical story from the very first page. Fast paced but packed with action and laughter, if you are a video game enthusiast, like me, you’ll find that the references one of the heroines keeps making to RPGs are spot on! How about it, would you like to experience a vibrant adventure, meet bizarre characters—not to mention one of the cutest!—and find yourself in a legendary game world?

Don’t waste precious time, Cefiro is in grave danger and needs not only the help of the magic knights, but also your support, the prophecy says so—or maybe it’s me.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review. This does not affect in any way my opinion of the book nor the content of my revieworiginally posted on Darkest Sins.

Classic 90s here. A little bit Sailor Moon, a little bit Tenchi Muyo (Mokona giving me Ryo Okhi vibes) all in an Isekai/portal fantasy package.
I enjoyed this, and the twang of nostalgia it inspired. Will definitely read more.

A beautiful return to girls’ fantasy stories such as The Wizard of Oz, The Seven Year Old Wonder Book, and Alice in Wonderland, mingling with elements of the legendary epic and a classic roleplaying scenario conveyed within manga form. The girls are a little older than in the stories mentioned above, but the fate of a magical world is in their hands, which they struggle to save.

Hikaru is tiny, with with a brave heart, filled with innocent enthusiasm and eagerness for any challenge or new experience which crosses her path. Her affinity is fire. Umi is elegant, beautiful, and a deft hand with a rapier, possessing a sharp temper and a tendency to freak out in the face of trouble. Her affinity is water. Fuu is thoughtful, pragmatic, and has a keen eye and hand at archery, displaying a playful, almost mischievous sense of humour when facing the unknown. All three girls finds themselves being summoned by Princess Emeraude of Rayearth, who pleads with them to save her world when they disappear from their respective school touring groups at the Tokyo Tower. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are thrown together, encountering the ancient, yet childlike sorcerer, Guru Clef. They also encounter the sensuously beautiful, yet sinister High Priest Zagato and his minions, determined to dispatch them before they can become Magic Knights. Alternating fleeing and fighting, the trio of young heroes find themselves in the Forest of Silence. There they must convince the mercurial and mysterious Weapomaster Presea to craft them the weapons they need to complete their quest. They also meet Mokona, a strange creature whom appears to be an ally, capable of helping them with the practical concerns of their journey (like food and a place to sleep) while they travel. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are going to need all the help they can get, as well as to muster their own strength. For whether they can get the weapons they require or the very material to create those weapons depends on their own hearts.

The magic in this resonated for me in a special way which struck deep at what I hope to achieve in my own work. Everything depended on emotion and heart. The gems on the Magic Knights’s gloves or some magical creatures or magic practictioners, capable of making weapons, tents, and food appear and disappear reminded me of some of the children’s classics I grew up with. The backgrounds and character designs were exquisite, detailed, filled with intricate patterns or flowing shapes which evoked both the fantastic and the Baroque, yet were unique. The story has the simple directness of a fairy tale or a children’s classic, while offering hints of layers waiting beneath the simplicity. The character of Presea was a marvelous blend of wisdom and fun, interacting seamlessly with the three main characters and Mokona. Other characters I took a while to warm up to, but there was no one I especially disliked and a lot of what feels like intentional room for growth. Light hearted, playful moments balanced well with the gravity of the epic. For all of these things, I give this book four stars.

✵ Everything about this volume works for me and my personal preferences as a reader. I'm going to describe the different elements for you but even though these elements are handled well, this is definitely the type of work that depends on your personal preferences.
✵ The story-telling is specific to the time it was written in which includes a fast and typical quest introduction.
✵ This is a pure portal fantasy, complete with normal high schoolers obtaining magical powers, having to save a princess, and wielding weapons for the first time.
✵ The characters are distinctly different but not so much that they fall into tropes. They read as organic people and are immediately likable.
✵ Their friendship is instant and without conflict. The girl-power element that's important in magical girl manga is emphasized, as it should be.
✵ I'm enjoying rooting for our heroes and I'm hoping that there will be character development throughout.
✵ We're already being set up for interesting dynamics between the protagonists and secondary characters.
✵ The secondary characters are not just props. I can tell that if there will be deaths or betrayals, they will hurt me.

I will be continuing on with this series.

Taikasoturien tarina on jaettu kahteen kolmiosaiseen julkaisuun Taikasoturit I ja Taikasoturit II.

Piirrostyyli toi mieleen suosikki mangakani Arina Tanemuran. Yllätyin kuullessani, että CLAMP on itseasiassa nimimerkki, jonka taakse piiloutuu neljän hengen piirtäjäporukka, joka on luonut myös muita suosittuja sarjoja MKR:n lisäksi, joskin se on varmasti yksi tunnetuimmista ryhmän teoksista.

Magic Knight Rayearth sopinee parhaiten vähemmän mangaa lukeneille, sillä se on hyvin perinteistä fantasia-tyttömangaa, vaikka välillä se tiedostaa jopa itse oman kliseisyytensä ja ottaa siihen humoristisesti kantaa.

My opinion of this book: complicated

It acts like a video game. One with a super long exposition where next to nothing happens. One where you sit and stare, unable to do anything for forever. Too much talking, not enough action, and when we get action, it's anti-climactic. Though, CLAMP has always seemed to struggle with fight scenes (excepting Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE).

The characters, however, are pretty good, though the art can be a little... off at times.

3.5/5

- Thank you to the author and the publisher for putting this title as a "read now" on NetGalley. -

Kodansha is putting on NG so many titles on read now and I'm living for it!!

I remember seeing the anime back in the days before going to school and singing the main theme song almost every day. It's one of those childhood pillars and reading it now it's making it feel so nostalgic.

CLAMP's drawings are amazing, they are full of heart and talent and will probably always be my faves.
The story tho was missing something.
Usually I get into the story immediately, but this time it took me way more than expected and I still have that feeling that something was missing from it.
It's missing that spark of magic to making it feel magical, if you get what I mean.

It's definitely a story worth to read, especially if you grew up watching it like me.
It's time to read where everything started. This volume is only an intro to the whole adventure.
