CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Middle school self thought this revelation was ridiculously goofy and asspullish, and adult self definitely still agrees. I mean, just look at him.
From what I remember of it, I think I have to say the anime version of the second series of Rayearth is definitely superior to the manga version, though I'll have to rewatch it to be 100% sure.
Due to Clamp's insistence that their two halves of Rayearth follow a three book format, they more or less completely screwed themselves over in terms of pacing. Like the first half, things happen at breakneck speeds all throughout, and we aren't given enough insight into the mass of characters besides much of a glancing one. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu almost take a backseat to things this time around, with Eagle more or less running the show as Most Important Character. In volumes 2 and 3, Chizeta and Fahren are pretty much inconsequential and feel like they're there more for padding (and possibly comic relief) than anything else, while that padding could have been put to better use focusing on the girls and their relationships with the other characters. I'm pretty sure they all had bigger roles in the anime.
Volume 2 is pretty silly in terms of how expository much of the dialog is, which generally makes for...well, really bad dialog, unless the author is particularly clever with turns of phrases. (And let's face it: Ohkawa Nanase has never written particularly good dialog). Various characters just repeat the same thoughts (regarding Cephiro's pillar system) over and over, which is interesting enough (I mean, the pillar system *is* the whole driving conflict behind this arc of the story), but when there isn't a whole lot of contemplation going on other than this, it gets rather old. Not to mention every time it's mentioned, we're given background shots of Emeraude who, while tragic, was also *boring*. So instead of exploring anything very fresh, they're hanging onto the story of the previous arc, which centered around a boring character, nobody says much that's very interesting, and a bunch of characters (everyone not named Hikaru and Eagle) are basically irrelevant now.
As with every volume since volume 3 of the first series, almost every battle scene with a Mashin is fairly incomprehensible. Giant robot action scenes crammed into tiny panels (and too many action lines and magic effects) don't work too well in still art.
Also, I just remember really liking Nova, who doesn't exist in the manga.
Still, I cannot deny that Magic Knight Rayearth will forever remain rather dear to me, due to stupid nostalgia and whatnot. I'm now old enough to admit to myself that it really wasn't all that great, actually, but...I'm okay with that.

Fuu, Umi, and Hikaru are haunted by their time in Cephiro. During a reunion at the Tokyo Tower, the girls are transported back to this magical land, which is in total disarray after Emeraude's death left the kingdom without a pillar. The artwork is gorgeous, the girls' regrets are believable, and the story begins to ask important questions about the pillar system and the legitimacy of it.
The ending of this second series, though, didn't surprise me like the first, and the series lost a lot of its staying power for that reason. The constant repetition of Emeraude's death and the friendship of the heroines, the confusing battle scenes, the cliches, the lack of character development, the romances, the ... meh. Not a series I would reread, though the artwork is undeniably gorgeous.
Review of vol. 1: here. Review of vol. 2: here. Review of vol. 3: here. Review of vol. 4: here. Review of vol. 5: here.
Everything tied up pretty okay. I was able to predict how things were going to end. I didn't feel entertained by the battles and even the ending discoveries, but I appreciated having a solid ending for the three ladies that I grew to like so much. I'm going to continue to remember volumes 1-3 fondly, and then just those last few pages of volume 6 were worthwhile.
I enjoyed the entire series overall. There were some flaws, such as too much cheesiness, melodramatics, and repetitiveness, but that's to be expected from 90's manga/anime. If there was something that I can't fault it would be the artwork. Seriously, it's stunning, and also very 90's.
When I was young and originally read it, I remember thinking the conclusion of a new name to be cheesy. The ending is very positive, possibly too positive for this now jaded adult who questions is validity. Regardless, it’s a happy ending that all can enjoy. I slightly wish to see it return, and maybe the hinted love lines can be developed. Nevertheless, there is that one hard love triangle to decipher; it can go in all three directions. 3.95/5
I'm happy with the ending Clamp devised for this series. Minus the reveal on Mokona feeling a little silly, the group is successfully able to center the trio's friendship in line with Cefiro's future. Their art is at their best here. The action is dynamic! I also really liked some of the shading and framing techniques they employed. Mokona's void of a mouth! I also appreciate the romantic framing not being as overt in the final pages after being set up early on in this half.
The second part of the Magic Knight series was an enjoyable read. I especially liked the third part because it was so funny. Though the series still kept it fast paced story progression it was much better than the first part of the series in which i just wanted to gag from all the repetitive nonsense, lack of world building, and barely any relationship progress between all the characters.
Speaking of problems, this whole part 2 had many. the first two volumes kept hammering the reader constantly with the fact that the main three females were friends. I mean, they kept repeating it over and over until I just wanted to shoot someone. Another thing, the whole tragedy that happened in the first part of the series was repeated also, even more so than the friendship aspect, i think for the first two volumes they kept mentioning it every other page. :/
Why the 2 and 3 stars then? Well, honestly because I liked it despite its many, many flaws. Does that even make sense? It was a fun, fast manga. I thought the characters were cute and funny. I especially liked the smart girl and prince falling in love trope. Sue me. Honestly, I think it appealed to the little girl in me that adored the three besties who saved the world concept. Either way it was one of Clamps lighter mangas.
Peccato. Però mi è venuta voglia di rivedere l'anime. Meglio di niente.
I’m a big fan of CLAMP and have always meant to read this since I’m such a big fan of Tsubasa so I guess I may have overhyped this for myself. Plus I’m pretty sure this is probably their first work or at least very early work so they do deserve a little leeway for that.
I wanted to like this series more then I did but there were a lot of issues for me. Part one is very rushed and, honestly, has a lot of pointless fetch-quests. I mean first they have to find the blacksmith to get weapons then get minerals for better weapons then awaken spirits to get even better weapons then ultimately use mechs and magic to fight their fights. The twist was pretty good though, gotta give them that.
Part two also felt a little too rushed. I mean, a lot of characters were thrown at me and there really wasn’t enough time to care about any of them. Plenty of time for some ridiculous humor, though. Did not enjoy the twist in part two. It felt a little too Star Trek V for my taste.
Overall, it’s a very okay series and short which is both good and bad so I would recommend it if you like fantasy RPG-type stories.
BTW, I borrowed these books from the library so the country is called “Jessi” in my universe.
This was the very first anime I had ever watched over and over on VHS. I knew every line by heart. But the VHS was only three parts and it never ended the story. It wasn't until years later that I bought the two seasons and watched what happened. But I still had not finished the second season so I did not know how this story would end.
The anime added a lot of fluff to the story. The manga is more straightforward with the story. It's short, but gives you enough time to build some sort of care for what's at stake. There are also new very important characters to the anime that do not exist in this manga.
If you're into the magical girl genre, you need to know this story. It's a very powerful story that teaches you a lot about our hearts and strengths and what we will do to live the life we want. Oh, and there are also giant mecha. It's got it all! Haha The second half feels more sci-fi than magical, but it's touching upon a very important and dark theme from the first half.
The reason I'm not giving 5 stars, is because I still feel rushed through some of the explanations between the new characters. It was also getting repetitive towards the end, but the lessons you learn are genuine and deep. I'm really glad I was finally able to finish this story. It only took me 24 years!
As Cephiro's neighboring worlds launch a final attack, the Magic Knights are desperate to find the magical Road that will lead them to the new Pillar. Establishing a new Pillar seems to be the only hope for Cephiro, but the fluffy little Mokona has been hiding the secret all along.
I was interested to see how the side characters finally revealed their hidden motivations, and when it came to the final test, they all had secrets to show. I just wish that the characters had more depth. The story is a little bare and predictable. The girls are so cute though, so I don't mind that they aren't complex. The action panels were still so confusing, and I could never tell half of what was happening during any of the battles. But the pretty artwork in other areas of the book made up for that!
I'm glad that I read this series, because I really needed a fun and easy read for this week. It's not amazingly life-changing literature, but it's interesting and entertaining!
(cailah ^^) 1 volume terakhir utk dibaca ulang!!
I watched the anime earlier this year and would not have picked this up if I had not seen people online saying that the ending is different in the manga.
I definitely prefer the manga's ending and actually got a bit emotional during the finale. I was not expecting the big reveal and enjoyed how all of the characters' arcs played out. My only criticism is that the anime does a lot more to endear you to the side characters (especially those from Fahren and Chizeta).
I am really excited to see what the new anime adaptation will do with this story!
This second series has been decent but a lot of wheel spinning going nowhere. The art has its moments where it is excellent and then the action scenes get confusing and muddled. With this final volume though I feel like the story sharpened and we had a lot of unexpected things happen. I never would of seen that ending coming though what happened with Hikaru I had a feeling from the beginning that was going to happen. Definitely want to revisit the entire series later after it settles in my head awhile.
