The American Dream isn’t a thing of the past, but a miracle of the present.
Now more than ever it’s easy to focus on the divisions that plague our nation. It may seem as if our best days are behind us, but bestselling author and senator Tim Scott believes we have yet to realize the fullness of our identity. We are in the midst of a story that’s still unfolding. And beautiful opportunities await.
In this powerful memoir, Scott recounts formative events of his life alongside the inspiring stories of other Americans who have risen above hardship and embodied the values that make our nation great. Together these personal and inspirational accounts call readers to embrace
the mountaintops as well as the valleys on the journey to a more perfect union;a path marked by optimism, hope, and resolve; anda future characterized by endurance, unity, and strength.
Both a clear-eyed reckoning with our nation’s failures and an ode to its accomplishments, America, a Redemption Story issues a clarion call for all of us to rise courageously to the greatness within our reach.
Tim Scott is a successful small businessman and US Senator from South Carolina. Having grown up in a poor single-parent household, he has made it his mission to positively affect the lives of a billion people through a message of hope and opportunity. He is the first African American to be elected to both the US House and US Senate since Reconstruction, and he currently serves on the Senate Committee on Finance; the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
Senator Tim Scott’s AMERICA, A REDEMPTION STORY reads like a campaign book. Unfortunately, the book largely fails to transcend the genre’s clichés, making it a disappointing read overall.
The writing is filled with aphorisms, platitudes, and anodyne statements that dominate much of the text. These elements distract from the moments when Scott discusses real people he knows or has worked with—stories that could have been compelling if they weren’t also used as talking points. The calculated nature of the book is its most glaring flaw.
Scott’s beliefs occasionally shine through, but rather than confidently presenting them, he seems to dilute his convictions by leaving room for opposing views in ways that feel more like pandering than open-mindedness. While respecting differing opinions is admirable, it comes across as lacking the courage of his convictions—an issue for a book meant to reflect a leader’s vision and principles.
One of the book’s strongest sections addresses the racism faced by black conservatives. He confronts the vitriol directed at him and others—such as Thomas Sowell, Condoleezza Rice, and Clarence Thomas—with commendable candor. His critique of liberal racism is poignant and underscores an important issue often ignored in mainstream discussions. In these moments, Scott is at his best: forthright, passionate, and genuinely compelling.
However, Senator Scott’s attempt to straddle multiple sides of key issues—race, the economy, and others—feels disingenuous. This is particularly jarring in an era of politicians who, for better or worse, are often unabashed in their beliefs. While one might not agree with the likes of Donald Trump, the raw authenticity of such figures contrasts sharply with Scott’s overly calculated approach.
Quotes: • “Clearly our Founding Fathers had glaring blind spots, but they were smart enough to know it! They created a Constitution that allowed us to adapt and evolve.” • “Redemption won’t be stopped.”
Ultimately, this text left me less impressed with Senator Scott than I was before reading it. While I still believe he’s a decent person and a better option than many of his peers, this book does little to inspire confidence in his leadership or authenticity. This is not a book that needs to be reread or even kept on your bookshelf. Instead, it serves as a reminder of the performative nature of modern politics—a missed opportunity for Senator Scott to present himself as a principled leader rather than just another politician.
Please keep in mind that I've never been a huge fan of Time Scott, but for some reason this one caught me by surprise. I'm still going to leave it unrated, but it was interesting getting some of his viewpoints.
America, a Redemption Story: Choosing Hope Creating Unity showcases, at best, Scott's desire and wish for an America that isn't so polarized. It's true, America is the most divided that I've ever seen it in my lifetime; however, wishing for the best and having hope isn't always the best solution to systemic issues that have continuously impacted marginalized communities. Quite honestly, Scott, in my opinion, is more moderate than he gives himself credit for. There were discussions about certain aspects of government as well as American society where Scott was able to see the perspectives of opposing arguments. He created a narrative that showcased him as more open-minded than I think he's given credit for as a Republican. While I still believe that we fundamentally disagree on most things, it was intriguing to hear a Black conservative discuss the many issues that continue to impact the Black community. I did not expect to like this book because I have a completely different political view than Tim Scott. But I couldn’t put it down because his story is important. Clearly to him, but clearly also to me as a white person who wants to understand better the Black people that I encounter every day. It’s a well written book from a different point of view. His stories of growing up are not that different from my own and those of the people that I know and that I associate with. In the end we’re all the same. we just look at some things differently. But his message of redemption is a good one and his message of hope is encouraging. I recommend this book
The first thing to say in this review/report is that after having read America, A Redemption Story is that Tim Scott is an honorable man of character worthy of following. That being as a leader in our United States government and as a godly man of integrity in his life. His memoir says much about his life, his family, his mentors and friends who have impacted his growth as a man, his career, and decision-making. Besides Senator Scott’s personal life’s journey of redemption, the book gives the reader a history of American redemption and provides hope for a country so fractured as we are today. His story encourages us all, finding that a black man having been raised by a single mom could rise to be a United States Senator. Hear in Tim Scott’s own words how he views his life:
“I have had infinitely more positive experiences when it comes to race than negative. My life has not been a life irretrievably marred by racism or bigotry (although he has been targeted many times by bigots as honestly described in this book—my comment). Today we live in a world that thrives on creating narratives of division. But my childhood and my life have not been defined by my blackness. The vast majority of my life has been defined by family, friends, and mentors who loved me. The majority of my life has been defined by my acceptance of the love of Jesus and the way I chose to view the world—namely, through the twin lenses of hope and redemption.” (Pages 182-183)
Tim Scott devotes a whole chapter to Opportunity. He was the creator of Opportunity Zones which has brought businesses to invest in “neighborhoods I grew up in.” In the chapter titled, “January 6” he gives a balanced assessment of what happened, as he was hold-up in the capital offices area during the time of chaos. He got the senate, Chaplain Black to pray as the senators were in lock down. Tim Scott’s approach to life is infectious and I being skeptical of the direction our country is going have gotten much encouragement from reading Senator from South Carolina’s book! You will too if you pick it up…
I finish with another quote from the author:
“We must embrace the truth that the most valuable things in life are free. If there are relationships that need mending, don’t wait another minute. We must love one another with abandon. This is who we were created to be.” (Page 79)
Senator Scott tells of historical events as well as his personal and family stories which illuminate undeniable racial bias.
Yet you can tell there is not a resentful or victimized demeanor. The Senator described how he was taught not to have a victimhood mentality, and he seems very much committed to the principle.
The narrative is informative, intellectually stimulating and encouraging. The attitude Sen. Scott displays after experiencing some traumatic events is the attitude we all need to emulate these days.
I’m not saying there are not other candidates I would support, but I could definitely vote for Senator Scott for president.
I’ll let you decide whether this is a purely inspirational biographical tome, or a campaign book. For my purposes, I don’t really care. The stories were interesting, the lessons insightful, the overall book entertaining.
I first became aware of Tim Scott when Nicky Haley appointed him to an unexpired term in the Senate. This book is a book of hope. He interweaves a series of personal and more familiar stories to explain his beliefs in hope and redemption. Before he got into politics he was a successful insurance agent for Allstate.
One of the best parts of this book is the introduction written by his mom. She explains his background and her own experience. The rest of the book touches on a number of issues always coming back to hope and redemption.
Perhaps the most moving chapter was one on being Black. He is no pollyanna suggesting that race relations have advanced a long way over time - but that we still have things to do. I think the best part of the book is a clear picture that we can actually have clear thinking, moral political figures.
I am listing a bunch of kinds of people. If you find yourself one of them then please read this book. It contains many pages of love and redemption. So if you are black, white, or any other color, Christian, atheist, republican, democrat, tall or short, any pronoun you like, fat or thin, have any color hair or bald, are a city slicker or farmer, have more money than you need or broke, live in a huge home or a city tent, believe in American values or hope this great country fails, are in jail or free, feel loved or ignored. Get this book!
Full disclosure: I lean left on a lot of things. My husband leans right, and he is a big fan of Tim Scott. He asked me to read this book. I went into it with an open mind, knowing that I probably wasn't going to agree with most of what Scott said. I was WRONG. What I really appreciate about Tim Scott - and this book - is the message that we really need to embrace everything about each other, and we need to recognize not only our differences but similarities as well. You can disagree with someone and see the world in the completely opposite way, but you can still respect each other and work together. It takes all of our different perspectives, personalities, and journeys to make this thing work. We've all got to do our best. We've all got to get up and do it... and we need to be able to rely on each other for help. I respect Tim Scott immensely, even though I don't see political matters the same way he does. I will be curious to see where his journey takes him.
Do I agree with everything Senator Scott has to say? No. Is this the most sincere political autobiography I’ve ever read? Probably. Do I think Senator Scott’s heart is in the right place and that we could all give each other more grace? Absolutely.
Really fun stories mixed with qunessential American optimism. His philosophy of life is nice if somewhat naive. Reminds me of Nietzche's critique of pietistic Christianity. His evangelical faith seems both genuine yet also a real opiate for the masses.
Optimistic. Positive. Understands the past but focuses on the future. Works, not for policies or an agenda, but for people. If Donald Trump wins the election, I believe Tim Scott will be a part of his administration.
I love Tim Scott and wish he had won the Republican Primary for this upcoming election. He is an honorable man of faith offering hope and unity in this broken world.
4.5🌟 Audiobook: Confession: I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I'm not sure how this book showed up on my radar. I live in the western states, and I don't follow the news a lot. Politics irritate me (for the most part). So I was only vaguely aware of Tim Scott, a Senator from South Carolina, and I didn't pick up the book because I thought he belonged to the right or wrong political party. But whatever did cause me to put this book into my audio queue, I am so glad I did put it there.
Review: This is an intimate story by and about the author, the people who raised him, the people who mentored him. It is an honest look at our nation. Above all, it is a story of hope. I wish more people were like the author, able to look with realism and honesty at a situation, able to speak openly and honestly about it, and still believe in hope instead of hate. This is a book that inspires and makes one believe in the future. Thank you, Senator Scott, for writing this book.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Excellent read. Couldn’t put it down. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. Engaging/entertaining/interesting. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed other books so much more. 1🌟 = For whatever reason, I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
Senator Tim Scott is an exceptional man who doesn't think of himself as such. He knows and understands, through personal experience, the struggles of growing up and living has a black man in the USA. He's made choices that transcend, and help overcome, the barriers faced by black Americans in this country. He has felt the sting of racism from some for being black and from others for being a Republican in he US Senate. He gives us a unique perspective as someone who doesn't fit the molds that commonly make up our perspectives on race and politics. This is particularly evident in the telling of his firsthand experiences with president Donald Trump, which he relates in chapters eleven and twelve. Above all Tim Scott is a very gracious and generous man even, and especially, to those who would make themselves his enemy. He tells, not only his own story but those of many others. Together they make up his vision of the story of America, a story of redemption, faith and hope. It's part of a narrative that could take us much farther than some others on a path of human flourishing. Inspiring and well worth reading.
I love and admire Tim Scott. His story was well known to me but yet I think the preface to his book by his mother is one of the most powerful and moving statements by a black woman. The book is a little bit unusual in structure, but you still get to know the man, Tim Scott, and what it was like as a young black male as a child and throughout his young life. And yet he does not dwell on the negative, which is the entire point of his book, how he overcame racism along with so many other examples of not using the excuse of being a victim. A must read for any conversative and those that tend to only watch CNN and the liberal bias pundits that spew their venom against anyone that has the audacity to disagree with them.
Interesting book, but it could have used better organization. Were chapters meant to be organized by topic or chronology? Scott’s integrity shows up, and that’s the reason I read this.
I did not know much about Tim Scott, but knowing he was going to throw his hat in the ring for the GOP presidential primary, it made sense to read up on him and to read the most recent book he authored himself.
This book is more about Tim’s (and others) stories that have made him who he is today and inspired his general philosophy on life. Yes, scattered throughout are political stories and some indications of his political positions, but this is more about who Tim Scott is and why.
You would be hard-pressed not to be inspired or impressed with Mr. Scott after reading this. His potential to inspire America, which is big in getting people to vote for you, is obvious. The Left should be happy the media is obsessed with ensuring Trump gets the nod (or, maybe DeSantis) because if they gave equal attention to Scott, the GOP just might have a winner on their hands.
I was particularly moved when he spoke out against Trump after he made racist comments following the Charlottesville protests. Scott stood up to him, took a ton of flak from the MAGA cult followers for daring to talk back to the Don, and ultimately used the incident to talk with Trump in hopes of educating him (lol) and then using the whole thing to get backing for Opportunity Zones to benefit his constituents.
Scott is also spot on pointing out some of the hypocrisy from the Left and their racism. Joy Behar is singled out, and rightly so, and others who have referred to him as “Uncle Tim” and other insults implying he was just a token in situations where he was steeped in knowledge and experience and doing his job as a Senator.
Yet, the last thing he wants to do is embark on a grievance campaign and speaks the language of unity and bringing people together. I read an article that the timing of this message is tone deaf in these divisive times, but I think, for the same reason…isn’t it exactly what we need?
My criticisms are minor when it compares to his other GOP opponents. I found his take on January 6th unsatisfactory:
“I don’t think every person who entered the US Capitol had mayhem in mind. I believe a large number of them came late, and, for the most part, never realized just how violent things had been.”
This would work for me if half the people there were there for an organized tour and already inside and things just got crazy. I have seen the videos. While many may not have known the exact extent of the violence, these people knew when they (unlawfully!) entered mayhem was afoot and to say otherwise runs counter to Scott’s other section in the book where he does seem to grasp the gravity of the situation as he was running for his life.
“It’s been said that the collective IQ of a mob drops nearly fifty points. It’s clear to me this phenomenon happened on that day.”
I don’t disagree and that IQ was probably in the high 30s then. Another minor point of criticism with the following:
“I have written again and again about the importance of not judging someone based on their worst day.”
I thought, “Wow, is Tim Scott a Republican against the death penalty?” This isn’t in his book, but a bit of research indicates he is quite for it. But the examples Tim gives for this quote are good ones. He concludes the book like this:
“Love they neighbor who proudly flies the Confederate flag or the LGBTQ flag or the American flag or the BLM flag…”
Part of me thinks this is what the leader of our Nation needs to say, but it rubbed me the wrong way in the false equivalency inherent in including a Confederate flag (a clear signal of embracing racism and bigotry) with the LGBTQ flag.
This is the first GOP candidate I have learned about that I could live with if they were to win. Trump or DeSantis would be four years of chaos, divisiveness, and BS. I may not agree with many of Scott’s positions, and I may not vote for him, but the sky would not be falling if he won.
In "America: A Redemption Story," Tim Scott's character shines through as a thoroughly decent man who desires the best for both people and our country. Amidst the current political climate, his book's aspirational message stands in stark contrast, provoking thoughtful consideration of our society's direction. However, while Scott's optimism is commendable, some may argue that he appears naive towards the harsh realities of political parties and media. This review will explore Scott's potential for a larger calling beyond politics, his eloquent insights on race, and the overall positive impression his book leaves.
1. Thoroughly Decent Man: Tim Scott's book reveals his genuine concern for the well-being of his fellow citizens. Throughout the pages, his intentions to improve the country and uplift people are palpable. His sincerity and the compassion he exudes make him a relatable and likable figure.
2. Aspirational Message in a Challenging Political Environment: Scott's optimistic and forward-thinking message in "America: A Redemption Story" appears to be a breath of fresh air amidst the current political climate. However, some readers may question the extent to which Scott acknowledges the brutal nature of political parties and media. It is worth considering whether his naivety towards these factors could subject him to similar treatment endured by Mitt Romney, leading to potential roadblocks in his political journey.
3. A Larger Calling: Throughout his book, Scott hints at the possibility of his larger calling outside the rough and tumble of politics. This notion invites readers to contemplate the various avenues through which Scott has the potential to bring people together, encompassing initiatives beyond traditional political roles.
4. Eloquent Insights on Race: One of the standout features of Scott's book is his eloquent discussion on race. He urges conservatives to remove their blinders, providing a unique perspective on the pain caused by racial conflict and the true nature of police interactions. His insights invite readers to critically examine their own beliefs and consider how they can contribute towards a more inclusive and empathetic society.
In conclusion, "America: A Redemption Story" portrays Tim Scott as a thoroughly decent man genuinely invested in the well-being of our country. The book's aspirational message stands out in contrast to the current political environment, even though some readers may question Scott's acknowledgment of the brutal nature of politics and media. Furthermore, his potential for a larger calling outside of politics, combined with his insightful portrayal of race, adds to the overall positive impression of the book. Ultimately, readers will likely find themselves appreciating Tim Scott and the message he presents in this empowering read.
Just an individual with a decent person and a positive vision of life might have composed this book since it was truly composed from his heart. I have consistently respected and really like Senator Tim Scott, which is the reason I decided to peruse his book. He so liberally shares many entrancing accounts of his family, companions and himself. His confidence, knowledge and consistent assurance has directed him to carry on with his existence with reason and importance. Through his accounts I found out such a great amount about him and see that his life was rarely simple or unsurprising however he put each occasion into building blocks to direct him along. There are numerous significant examples individuals can gain from him and I accept that we ought to be considerably more mindful of what we think and believe and utilize our own background to get us to our next life section. We have all, at some time pushed forward throughout everyday life, perhaps with blinders, with no arrangement and just let life itself move us along as though we are riding a wave and traveling solo. What I accept Senator Scott's most grounded message is to look, feel and experience existence with more profound significance, mindfulness and course. Notice everyone around us and acknowledge we are rarely alone and we can gain from others and furthermore understand the superb inclination that perhaps we likewise have impacted others by being a kinder and better individual. You can't construct a house without an arrangement, and life is comparably muddled so we want to think in those terms. His most grounded message is the support that we are so lucky to live in a country that has no limits that restrict us, yet permits us to achieve the most we can an option for us. History has shown that America had its troublesome times, limits and blockaides and many individuals endured to help dispense with and defeat them. That set of experiences cleared our direction. As far as possible is what we put on ourself.
In America: A Redemption Story, Senator Tim Scott presents a refreshingly optimistic take on what makes America wonderful despite its imperfections. Through his own story of his humble origins and having to face real challenges of adversity and racism (both through being raised in poverty, law enforcement profiling AND racism through elite leftist snobs who don’t believe a Black Republican can genuinely come to his own conservative convictions), Sen Scott paints a picture of a imperfect and unique country than can enable all Americans to climb the ladders of success.
Through a series of autobiographical accounts and vignettes biographies of close acquaintances, Sen Scott does not hide from some of America’s struggles, especially when it comes to dealing with race. However, what sets Tim Scott apart from others is that he refuses to wallow in victimhood and strongly rejects that label. His is a story that celebrates racial diversity without being mired in identity politics. Finally, he is a voice who has been able to speak truth to power to leaders of his own party on controversial issues, while avoiding burning bridges of progress. I find his accounts very inspirational.
In today’s political climate, a seemingly soft-spoken and thoughtful voice like Tim Scott can be drowned out by the noise and bluster of politicians with a bit more stage presence, political gravitas and red meat for their base. My hope is that more people take the time to red this book and gain an uplifting perspective and the unique opportunity for success that exists in America.
Finally I read this book over audible which, through the narration of Senator Scott, his mother, and chief of staff, provides a charming and engaging experience. I highly recommend this book to my friends (political wonks or otherwise).
I don't read many biographies/autobiographies but was anxious to read Senator Tim Scott's after hearing him interviewed. My curiosity to read more of his personal quest to achieve success was truly piqued.
Tim is the product of a broken home, his mother escaping with her two young sons from an abusive situation. They were always poor and struggling but with the love of a devoted mother they had an incredible determination to survive and succeed as a family. Tim's mother was also determined to instill in her sons that they should never make excuses or blame others. They would be the author of their futures and go forward from there. That spirit, and his mother's faith in him was instrumental is launching Tim from struggling young business owner to US Senator from South Carolina.
This remarkable gentleman has grit and determination to serve our amazing country with every fiber of his being. How proud his mother, and eventually his father must be of their son. I'm proud of him and I've never even been to SC!
I rarely mark passage or sentences because of the wisdom of the words, but I did so six times as I read - and I could have marked more! I loved this one in particular on pg.84: "It's easy to champion someone who thinks and looks like us. But I believe the power to change hearts and minds will only come through opening our own hearts and minds. Rather than throw stones at those who disagree with us or become angry and aggressive toward those who think differently, try listening. Civility leads to compassion, and compassion gives us the courage to press on." That's wisdom, and it applies to all of us!
This is a quick read and it's enhanced with a section of pictures. How fun to see Tim's life and the inspirational people that are his roots! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Being from South Carolina, it felt like such an honor and pleasure to be able to read my own senators' book. I loved a look at Senators Scott's background and what his family life was like. These people so often seem untouchable and like they aren't everyday people. Reading this book really made me feel connected to Senator Scott, and I could connect with him on a human level so much more than I would have just seeing him on screen.
This book really felt like a look at the not so glamorous past and how much we have improved ourselves. America is still a very young country compared to other nations, and it is my belief that this is what Senator Scott was portraying in his book. He did not have an amazing start to life, and he was haunted by a lot of his past, much like America is. However, like Senator Scott titled his "a redemption story," this is what America is doing. Every day, we are trying to improve and write a better story. It was beautifully done, in my humble opinion, and I enjoyed much of it and his book as a whole.
Even though I am sure Senator Scott will never see this, I would like to thank him for writing this book. South Carolina has long been forgotten and is a long way from when we took center stage in the revolutionary years. You, however, Mr. Senator are helping bring us back and making South Carolina better, and you will always have my thanks for bringing stories of South Carolinians to the mainstream.
From Abuse to a Single-Mother Home to the US Senate: an American Redemption Story
Sen. Scott’s speech, above all of the others at the GOP nomination convention of 2020, made me think with surprise and admiration, “He almost persuaded me to be a Trump supporter.” That is the tact and persuasive power of this man. That and other things that I had heard in the news made me want to read this book by someone exploring a candidacy for President of the United States.
Sen. Tim Scott’s America, A Redemption Story is my favorite book by a political leader to date. In it, he shows that he is able to recognize the racial tensions and difficulties in our country while acknowledging and celebrating the progress gained over our history. From his family’s experiences, he aptly demonstrates how much America has changed toward redemption from his grandfather’s years to his mother’s and then to his own experience and beyond. Scott’s glimpses at his own history as well as the nation’s, shown in spotlights on specific moments and times give the reader hope for America to become a more perfect union. He is civil at a time when being civil is not in vogue. He is a man to watch in the 2024 race for president and beyond. His is a voice that we need to hear. I heartily recommend this book whatever your political persuasion.
I chose to listen to the audio book and am so glad I did. I believe it was a much better way to learn what the senator had to say. I have been impressed by Senator Scott when seeing him interviewed on TV. He comes across as a sincere and spiritual person, who truly cares about what he is doing. I expected this to be primarily his story but found it to be more. He shares stories of others, some unknown, some who achieved some notoriety. But there's more. One chapter is written and narrated by Jennifer DeCasper, a young woman who after making difficult decisions, was hired by the newly elected senator after he had some serious discussions with God. His spiritualism shone through the entire book. Senator Scott demonstrates a sense of humor, and a true devotion to family. This all comes through in this book. That said, I would have only given this 4 stars if it weren't for one thing. Senator Scott's mother wrote and narrated the Introduction which I found so powerful, I listened to it more than once. Her strength and resilience are so evident in the introduction. Senator Scott has accomplished much and is worth getting to know. Even if you don't agree with his politics, his story is worth knowing.
This book was a very powerful look into Tim Scott's experiences as an American and yes as a black man in America! I truly appreciated the candor and honesty with which he told his story. Yes, there were ugly parts and he is honest about the times that he has experienced racism in our country.
The exciting thing about Tim though is that he does not blame the whole country for these incidents and he does not embrace the victim mentality which would say that because these things have happened he can't accomplish great things.
Instead, he uses these events as motivation to become an even better man and to preserve an even better America for those who come behind him.
He also shares the stories of many others who have overcome life's challenges and made a difference in this wonderful land of opportunity.
I don't know what the future holds, but I would truly be honored if a man like him were to get into the White House!
