The second book in “The Holts” series (itself a follow-on series to The Frontier trilogy, The Empire Trilogy, and the 24-book “Wagons West” series, chronologically speaking) is a welcome addition to this massive story. Following the events of The Oregon Legacy, we’re now in the year 1889 and we finish in 1891. The Old West is starting to morph into more modern times, as evidenced by references to Karl Benz’ automobile, advancements in newspaper presses, and other inventions.

Tim Holt continues to pursue his new passion as a newspaper man by joining the Oklahoma Land Rush and establishing the first newspaper in what became the territorial capital, Guthrie, Oklahoma. Other story plots include Cathy Martin’s attempts to become an actress on the New York stage and Janessa Holt’s adventures after graduating and becoming one of the first female doctors.

Twice, events conspire to bring the whole extended family together for reunions and it was nice to catch up with some of the other characters from previous books. Unfortunately, one such event was for the funeral of one of the original important characters from the first Wagons West books. That’s to be expected though, given that we are now several generations into the descendants and the surviving original pioneers are quite elderly at this point.

Plenty of adventure infuses the main plot lines, with matters of pride and romance on the line. I’m not sure who exactly wrote this one. Sources indicate it was either James Reasoner or Noel B. Gerson but it could have been somebody else as well. Regardless, it was a good entry in the series.

Sooners refers to the land grabbers that were in place before the allotted time to claim the Indian land.
Boomers were those who waited at the starting line for the land grabbing to begin when they heard the signal of gunfire.

Tim Holt was still living Virginia City where he was editor of the Virginia City Beacon. Tim vowed never to fall in love again after Isabella. He sold his newspaper to move to Oklahoma to begin a new one in Guthrie. While waiting for the land rush to begin, he met Rosebay Basham. Her husband was drunk and got killed in a gunfight while waiting for the land rush to begin. She ended up choosing land that was close to the land chosen by Tim Holt. She fell in love with Tim but came to realize that he would never love her back. She was hounded by her brother-in-law, Rowell Basham, who was a moonshine seller and a bad preacher. He set fire to Tim's newspaper and burned down Rosebay's home. He was shot by an Englishman, Hugo Ware, while fleeing from the fire he set to Rosebay's house and was on his way to attack Rosebay without her having seen him. Rowell had determined to have Rosebay as his wife or kill her. Rosebay decided to marry him in return for saving her life and because Tim would never love her.

Peter was step-son of Tim's aunt, Cindy. Cindy was Toby's sister. Peter didn't do well in school and he took to following Tim around when Tim came to visit his parents home while waiting for the land rush to open. Tim asked Peter's parents if Peter could come with him to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma to participate in the land rush. Peter worked for Tim at the newspaper and used the money he earned to help pay other's loan payments which kept them from losing their land and homes to the bank, owned by the mayor. The mayor was a crook who hated Tim for what he printed about his being crooked. The sheriff arrested the mayor, with Tim's help, after he found the mayor at the still that Rowell Basham had used to make his moonshine. (Whiskey was illegal in OK during this time.)

Cathy Martin ran away from the ladies academy she was attending to go to New York. She had dreams of becoming an actress. She stayed with, Lucy Wood, a friend of her great-aunt, Claudia's. She grew tired of waiting to make it to a stage, she agreed to sing at a club. She did not understand that Eddie, who had gotten her the position, was expecting sexual payment in return for helping her to obtain employment. Sam was at the club and rescued Cathy from his advances. Cathy was accepted to work with a well known acting coach in New York.

Eden also attended the academy with Cathy. Claudia had come to academy to pick up the girls. Eden's mother, Lydia, allowed Claudia to take Eden with her to New York to find Cathy.

Sam was still married Annie Malone and was unfaithful to her. Sam was having award time dealing with the fact that he was living off an allowance from Annie. He drank and ran around on Annie to compensate with his insecurity.

Toby was a Senator and got into a gun fight (duel) just after the funeral of his father. He was challenged by an ex-girlfriends husband, Senator Leclerc, from Louisiana. Leclerc was extremely jealous and shot Toby in the shoulder during the duel, duel's were illegal and he was supposed to miss on purpose. Leclerc then tried to kill the ex-girlfriend in his crazy jealousy. Toby and Sam prevented Leclerc from killing both himself and his wife after Leclerc went crazy, partly due to the fact that Toby had shot him in his hand and he could no longer use it. Toby's shoulder wound hadn't healed yet and he had told Sam he would handle Leclerc himself but was happy that Sam hadn't listened and was there to help him out. Leclerc went back to Louisiana and his wife went with him. She told Toby that she had vowed to love him and would take care of him regardless of how he had treated her and whether or not his sanity returned.

Janessa, Tim's sister graduated from medical school and married Charley Lawrence.

I always enjoy reading the Wagons West series and the "spinoffs". The history and the lives of the characters make the stories enjoyable.
