“Together with her friend Jane Fonda, Gloria started the Women’s Media Center which promotes equality through its amazing articles and stories. And she celebrated her 80th birthday by visiting elephants in Botswana.”

Eight years later, on March 25, we wish Gloria Steinem a happy 88th birthday!

But let’s back up a bit. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, US, but the family lived and travelled all over in a trailer.

Little Gloria, atop the family’s travelling home

She made all kinds of friends in all kinds of places, boys and girls, kids to learn with and play with no matter who they were or where they lived. Everybody was treated the same.

“Gloria felt like she could do anything. She didn’t see any difference between the friends that she made from place to place. No matter their gender, they could do the same things… or even better: they could do them together!”

That changed when she was ten and her parents divorced. She settled down with her mother and discovered schools were not as broad-minded as she was.

“For the first time in her life, Gloria attended school every day. But she soon realised that girls and boys were not treated the same there.”

The boys are huddled around a table with their male teacher while the girls are still at their desks, looking bored and ignored. That wasn’t the only problem – her mother had always wanted to be a reporter, but they wouldn’t hire a woman. (You begin to see a pattern here, right?)

Young Gloria commiserating with her mother on not getting a job as a reporter

She’d never heard of feminism, although her grandmother had been a suffragist who argued for equality. Off she went to college, and when her class went to New York for the first time, she was hooked!

“After two years studying in India, she went back to the city, ready to become a New Yorker and all that her mother had ever dreamt of: a journalist.”

You can see from the illustrations and the colourful boots and flares that this is now the Swinging Sixties. She was living her mother’s dream, and her articles became popular. She went undercover for 10 days as a bunny.

The book doesn’t identify the Playboy Club by name, but the illustration is clear!

Later she discovered people in the Women’s Liberation movement, and she not only joined, she founded a magazine Ms that just celebrated its 50th birthday.
https://msmagazine.com/

She has continued her activism, still leading the way.

”And little Gloria will continue to inspire new generations of feminists ready to make the most out of their talents. Because it doesn’t matter what gender you are, what matters is that your dream is only yours to determine.”

She is smart, passionate, and effective. The fact that she was not only extremely intelligent, but also strikingly attractive isn’t mentioned, but those attributes and her college connections would have opened a lot of doors others would have struggled to enter. I’m delighted she put her influence (that much overused word now) to good use.

Incidentally, the illustrations show her as a kind of short blonde, when in fact, she has always been slender and fairly tall with beautiful long dark hair in her youth, albeit with her trademark blonde streak. A couple of the little black and white photos at the back show her face better.

A worthy subject for this excellent series. I just wish some of the illustrations appealed to me more.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Gloria Steinem is an excellent addition to the Little People Big Dreams series! This book tells how little Gloria Steinem grew up to become an incredible female activist for women's rights and how her input helped change the way forward for women of today. These biographies for children are such fantastic short reads which encourage children to pursue their beliefs and dreams and show how one person can make such a difference innthe world today.
The illustrations are sweet and fit the style of Gloria. The timeline at the back of the book is interesting too for older children and adults to read.

I hadn't realized how much being a child of divorce affected Steinem. The illustrator shows her in her trademark aviators even as a child, which is probably inaccurate but very amusing. Good to see a feminist leader get her own book in this very successful series.

I am a huge fan of Gloria Steinem - such an amazing woman who dedicated her life to public service. Especially the service of furthering women and their rights.
This is a great introduction to her life - her family background, inspiration to take on the plight of women's rights - or lack of, as her calling.
Gloria became a journalist - experienced sexism in the work place. But that wasn't enough for Gloria - she went out and experienced sexual harassment as a server in a male club. Her strength allowed her to build a magazine focusing on women - and it was successful.
Gloria pushed the women's agenda - in society, in politics, in life. This is a great overview.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This book is about Gloria Steinem and how she became the feminist icon that she is today. Her work for the feminist movement is something that could be inspiring not only for children, but also for adults.

Five Stars!
Even though I was familiar with Gloria Steinem and some of her work, I was unfortunately unaware of much else about her life, so I was very interested in this book. As with the other volumes in the Books in the Little People, Big Dreams series, this book did a great job explaining Steinem's life's work and the inspirations that led to her becoming an activist and leader in easily understandable terms alongside the sweet colorful illustrations that are a hallmark of the series. This series is an important addition to any child's bookshelf, and every time I read one, I wish it was around when I was small.

I am so grateful to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to read and review Gloria Steinem.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This little book tells the story of Gloria Steinem, who's considered the world's most famous feminist. Her work and life are truly inspirational!

Another laudable addition to the LP:BD collection-a series that I wish was around when I or even my kids were small. They do a really praiseworthy job at producing appealing and informative mini-biographies of notable figures of history, past and present.

This one took on Gloria Steinem. I didn’t know she didn’t attend school until she was ten, but instead lived a mobile life with her parents and sister. Even though these are designed for kids, I always come away with stuff I didn’t know.

This one’s illustrations (which vary among the books in the series), looked a bit like clip art…really good clip art, I’ll add, but very stylized art from an adobe illustrator master. Still cute and colorful though.

The series’s next subject should be taken from this one’s afterword timeline: African American activist Dorothy Pitman Hughes, who co-founded Ms. magazine with Ms. Steinem, but who as far as I’m aware, hasn’t received the same accolades as Glor.

Gloria Steinem is a recent addition to this great series of biographies for children. This is a great introduction to her life including her family background, her inspiration to take on the plight of women that promoted women's rights as well as all human rights. She was a feminist, often considered a dirty word, but she persevered with the help of others. She became a journalist and quickly had a huge following although she did experience sexism in the work place. I think she is most famous for her stint undercover as a playboy bunny and it is mentioned in the book in a very child friendly way. Founding Ms Magazine, as well as many pro-women association has made her a person to look up to and emulate for her strength, values, perseverance and fight for the rights of everyone. Gloria pushed the women's agenda - in society, in politics, in life. This is a great way to introduce her to children as well as for them to see how even as a child she saw what was wrong and eventually found others to work with to make things better. As always, illustrator, Lucila Perini adds a great feel to this book with her quirky and detailed illustrations. A book that should be in all school and public libraries.

An advanced copy of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review- Thank you!

What worked:
The illustrations were so charming and full of little "Easter Eggs" to correlate to the part of the story.
The author presents the story in chronological order, supplemented by short paragraphs at the end of the book to tie up loose ends.
Cheeky Phrases/high brow humor, especially in regards to spending "10 days dressed as a bunny" where the illustration protrayed her with rabbit ears and a bow tie.

What didn't work:
The story seems to graze over several decades of Gloria Steinem's work and generalize her work as "women's rights/feminism".
I would have loved if the story outlined the policies/groups that are currently in place that are a direct result of her efforts.

Overall, well done! I enjoyed this piece of art and look forward to reading more!

A book that does a lot to portray the life and times of feminist journalist and campaigner Gloria Steinem – and then has a script that calls her "little". Good job she isn't a big, chunky Gloria then, for that would be just wrong. Beforehand, it had navigated her past most successfully, even if it couldn't mention what the "some women" were doing when it discussed her in disguise as a Playboy Bunny. Also of note is the fact this has one of the better looks of any in this extensive series, nailing the Biba, miniskirt and dayglo styles of the times. I only hope I saw it so early the disparaging description can be cropped.

AD|ARC|GIFTED. Another fabulous book in the collection! Firstly I want to mention the illustrations - as always they were gorgeous and I adore the representation and bright colours! I’ve never heard of Gloria Steinem (how I don’t know) so it was amazing to learn about her. Honestly how awesome is she! I love that her grandmother was a suffragist and Gloria is such a huge voice in feminism/women’s liberation. And founding the Women’s Media Centre with Jane Fonda - what a badass! Such a great model for children and a way to teach them feminism/equal rights as they grow. The final message actually brought a tear to my eye: “it doesn’t matter what gender gosh are, what matters is that your dream is only yours to determine”. A perfect addition to the collection; here’s to future feminists and a better world.

Little People, Big Dreams Gloria Steinem… This may be my favorite book in the series for the illustrations! A favorite series of excellent educational books for young readers. The illustrations are great for the younger Kiddo's, the information is relevant for a range of ages & sparks excellent conversation. The timelines in the back of the books are great. No matter the age, everyone will learn something by reading these books ❤

Yes! I have been looking for a good way to introduce my young son and daughter to the powerhouse who is Gloria Steinem. We tried the “Who Is” series about Steinem and while that was well done, it went into a little too much detail about certain subjects that I just wasn’t quite ready to tackle with my young kids. Little People Big Dreams: Gloria Steinem hits it just right for young children! In addition to a succinct yet impactful storyline, the pictures portray the nuances of Steinem’s work and legacy, genius in a children’s book as kids tend to study the pictures intently. I also appreciate the more in depth timeline at the end of the book for older listeners. My kids really enjoyed this and I was so excited to introduce them to one of my heroes. I hope that learning about women in history who paved the way for those who came after plants a seed to inspire them to pick up the torch and carry on the mission when it’s their turn.

Gloria Steinem really did much to change the world. I found it interesting to learn that when she was a young child, she did not go to regular school and the family traveled from place to place in their trailer. So, when Gloria was 10 and starts going to regular school, she realizes how girls dreams for the future are treated differently then boys.

She had allows wanted to be a journalist. At the time, boys were encouraged to study and get a job and women were encouraged to marry and have children. This felt very restrictive to Gloria. Even during college this was going on. She finally decides to write many articles and women respond to her. She is so popular she starts her own magazine. Many things that girls now take for granted weren’t available then. Women could not even get a credit card in their own name unless married. She fought for equal pay, marriage equality, and equal rights for women.

She did not think it was your gender that mattered, it was your dreams and determination that should decide how you do in life. So, this is a very important message for young girls, but boys as well. If a child thinks there is some sort of unfair treatment, they can use their voice and ask for the needed change. It can then happen. That is the message of Gloria Steinem’s life. This is recommended reading for Elementary Age children and think these books belong in schools and libraries so all children can access them. The pictures done by Lucila Perini added much to this book.

Thank you NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for a copy of this wonderful book. The Little People, Big Dream Series is wonderful.

I love this series - Little People, Big Dreams! I always jump at the chance to read these books.
I have heard about Steinem, but I didn't really know too much.
So pleased I read this book, now want to find out more. I hope this has the same effect on the young people who read this book, who are the main target audience for the books in this series.
I loved the focus on gender and feminism, and how this reflected in the illustrations.
This book is so positive and inspiring - just like Steinem herself!

I just Love this little books by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, must be one of the best little books to purchase for children, these are the best-selling series of books and educational games that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.

So, this latest book is about Gloria Steinem is one of the latest of her books and this is so beautifully illustrated from start to end. Gloria realised from a young age that the women were treated differently than men, and that wasn't fair. Beginning her career as a journalist, her witty and honest articles challenged readers to see the world through her eyes. Following in the footsteps of her suffragist grandmother, she became passionate about feminism and grassroots activism.

There was so much work to be done, and Gloria kept working – she became a passionate leader in the women's liberation movement and dedicated her life to brining about change. A spokesperson for an entire generation, to this day Gloria inspires us to keep working for a fairer society – for everyone.

I am reviewing these short biographies as a series, rather than individually, unless one title requires additional information or comments. There are dozens of books in this series of well-done biiographies, all written by Vegera. The titles generally focus on one individual, many still living, but some are not. Many of the featured characters are famous but some aren’t as famous as they should be, considering the impact that those people had on fields like science, technology, research, healthcare, leadership, literature, arts and culture, sports, aviation, education, human rights, world peace, animal welfare / conservation, climate change and conservation of earth, air and water. Many of the featured characters got little recognition for their work in their lifetimes. All these stories have been pared down to what information is most essential and pertinent to the topic and person. These books are targeted at children and written in language and concepts suitable for them, but also for their parents, teachers and caregivers who may read these to, or discuss them with, the children. The books are beautifully illustrated, by many different artists, so although the books are similar in size, length, and concept, they are different in artistic style – to suit the featured character and theme. I would strongly recommend these books to parents who want to have discussions with their children about issues like human rights and future career options but mostly about ensuring the children know, and do, what is right, and good to make a positive impact on society.

Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Lucila Perini
Age Recommendation: Early Primary
Topic/ Theme: Equality, Biographic
Setting: America
Series: Little People, Big Dreams

Gloria Steinem is a bit (ok a lot) of a controversial figure, any woman who is as deeply entrenched in the feminism movement as she is usually are. This represents her in the best possible light, showing her strength and all the good she has done for women and minorities in the world. The inclusion of the reference to "A Bunny's Tale", Steinem's 1963 Playboy expose is definitely one for the adults. Those iconic ears will mean nothing to young readers.

I like the choices for the consistent design elements of Steinem. Originally I thought there were three but there are only two, the glasses and hair. The one that changed quite late was the colouring of her clothes usually autumnal reds. The art style for Dorothy Pitman Hughes, co-founder of Ms. and frequent face in Steinem's fight for equality, is done well. That last page containing the book's lasting message is fantastic. There are minorities and togetherness, and an adorable Dachshund.

My gratitude to Netgalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and the publisher for providing me an e-copy of this book in exchange of honest opinion.

It might sound crazy but I had no idea who Gloria Steinem is. Pathetic right? I'm glad to have read this book as it masterfully summarizes her life and the areas of her contribution in simple, attractive language. Gloria constantly travelled from one place to another in a trailer with her family until she was 10 which is when her parents divorced and she settled with her mom. Then we move on to the turning points of Gloria's life, her journalism career, using journalism as a medium to protest against sexism, how she turned into one of the most highlighted, accomplished feminist leaders. She co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus, Ms. magazine, Women's Action Alliance, Women's Media Center and created 'Take Our Daughters to Work Day' to help young girls understand future job opportunities better. I am in awe of this incredible, energetic woman! The illustrations were beautiful and well-done. As I was a stranger to her activities, I didn't understand what 'spending 10 days as a bunny' meant. I know now, ha ha. Overall, a great read.

Here is another excellent biography for kids. This time readers will learn about how young Gloria Steinem became a well-known and capable advocate for women’s rights.

Even adults may learn some things about Gloria that they did not know. For example, for many years, she and her family lived in a trailer and traveled. This all changed when Gloria was ten and her parents divorced. It was after this that young Gloria was exposed to the ways in which boys and girls were treated differently. This was not okay! Gloria’s life purpose became to stand up for women. She became a journalist and went on from there. Her contributions to feminism are now well-known.

The illustrations in this title are lovely and evocative. They add to the enjoyment of the book. All in all, this is another excellent entry in a series that invites children to aspire. As always, there are sections of additional information at the end of the book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Of course, I have heard about Gloria Steinem, and read some of her articles. However, I did not know anything about her itself; thankfully, this book provides me a start to addressing this flaw (like with every book in this series). From life on the road in a trailer with her family, to life on the road as a powerful journalist years later, this book gives readers a informative yet brief look into her life.

And while it took me a second to get it, the book also includes her foray into Hugh Hefner’s mansion for a story with the words “… she spent ten days dressed as a bunny to report on the working conditions……..”! So yes, general and even specific aspects of her life, in an age appropriate fashion!

Cool fact: She spent her 80th birthday with elephants in Botswana!

Disclaimer: I received a digital ARC from Edelweiss, and these are my honest opinions.

'Gloria Steinem' by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Lucila Perini is another entry in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.

Gloria Steinem grew up in Ohio with an older sister. Her family travelled around in a trailer and she learned that people were equal, no matter what their gender was, but found that the world didn't think the same way. She was inspired by the women in her life who came before her to become a reporter.

As ever, this series never fails to impress. The art choices almost always seem to be spot on for the prose and that goes for this title as well.

Discover the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.
As a kid, Gloria felt like she could do anything! She didn't see any difference between her friends-no matter their gender, everyone could do the same things and have fun together! But when she started school, Gloria realised that she was treated a certain way just because she was a girl.
This revelation led to her life-long fight for feminism and women's liberation. This inspiring story features a facts and photos section at the back.

Little People, Big Dreams are firm favourites in my KS2 class. I had not heard of Gloria Steinem prior to reading this book and I will be researching her further. The book has beautiful, enhancing illustrations, a bit different from the complement of illustrators that feature in this series. They definitely add a 'difference'' to the story and complement it well - they fit in beautifully with the topic of a leading feminist activist.

I love the brightness and positivity of the book and the timeline at the rear of the book helps to encapsulate the story.

Yet another great addition to this "Little People, BIG DREAMS" series! Gloria Steinem by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara explores the life of the plucky eponymous feminist and journalist. Steinem noticed at a young age that females and males were treated differently and held to different standards. She went on to become a journalist, and traveled the world, finding her true passions in grassroots activism, and feminism.

At the end is a section with more detailed information on Steinem's life, suitable for older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great, and full of delightful art to engage younger audiences!
