Clash of Fate and Fury

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Gen may have rescued her beloved father from prison, but she hasn’t saved him yet. If she fails her end of a bargain with the Olympian Empresses, they will send him right back to his cell. To keep the Empresses happy, Gen must bring them the legendary golden apples of Hesperides and the monstrous Cerberus. But both are rumored to be in the neighboring Elysium Empire, which has a long history of war with Olympia. Making matters worse, Gen’s former enemy and newly designated heir to the isle of Arcadia Castor invites herself on the journey, hoping a golden apple could end Arcadia’s reliance on Illumium for storm vials. And Castor’s twin brother, Gen’s StormMaker boyfriend Pollux, has been pulling away from Gen due to troubles stemming from her mind magic.

With Castor’s pirate-thief girlfriend and Pollux’s servant companion in tow, the unlikely team embarks on its voyage. But war is only an insult away in Elysium, and more than the Emperor has their eyes on Gen’s mission. The quest has caught the attention of one of Elysium’s Oracles, and trouble is sure to brew with Prophecy on the rise.

After completing the impossible tasks the Empresses gave her in the first book, Gen is forced to go on yet another impossible mission to free her father. The Empresses will release Alcmen only after Gen brings back the legendary apples of Hesperides and the deadly Cerberus from Elysium. As if this quest was not nearly impossible already, Gen must be extra vigilant and careful as Elysium and Olympia used to be at war, and it would not take much for the two nations to declare war on each other again.

The world-building is expanding in this sequel as Gen and her group have to visit new lands, and we also get to see more of the different types of magic. The pace of this book is similar to the first book, with the difference that this time, Castor and Gen have to work together instead of competing against each other. There is still a lot of action and running around to fulfill the Empresses’ quest, and once you get into this book, it’s easy to get lost in it and to fly through it in a few sittings.

Gen remained a great, likable, and relatable main character in this book. She is driven, and determined to do whatever it takes to save her father, yet she is also open to reasoning, and when she sees that her quest might put her friends in danger, she is willing to turn around and let it go, even if it means not freeing her father. She is headstrong, but not too obstinate to see what's happening around her, or how her choices and actions impact others, and I like that about her. She is also still a strong kickass fighter when she needs to be, but at the same time, we can clearly see that she does not enjoy violence, and she prefers to find peaceful solutions to her problems.

Pollux remained a steady, mature, and soothing presence by Gen’s side, and I love his calm vibe. I also loved to learn more about Bale and see more depth in his character in this book. Those two were great secondary characters, and the author did a great job with their development. Those two mixed with Gen, Castor, Akidia, and even Chomp created an explosive mix though, and I like the tension it added to the already difficult quest Gen had. Everyone was tiptoeing around each other, while also trying to make themselves heard and hold some power in the decision-making process… It was a ticking bomb waiting to explode.

While this book does not focus on the romance that much, the relationship between Gen and Pollux was sweet, and their problems and relationship development was well integrated into the plot. There was no drama between them just for the sake of adding drama to the book. Their feelings and conversations were believable and relatable. That being said, I would have liked for them to tackle the issue of Gen’s gift sometimes in the book. I feel that it was a big issue, and it just wasn’t really addressed. Besides that though, I don’t have any complaints about them. There is also the beginning of a more serious relationship between Castor and Akidia, and hopefully, this will have a good influence on Castor and will help her get more levelheaded and less selfish in the future.

“Do you know why I never named you heir?”
“Of course I do. It’s because of the stupid doctrine.” She jabbed a finger at the offending parchment hanging behind glass on the wall. It was as frail and yellowed as Leto. One breath, and it would crumble to ash.
“No. It’s because you’re selfish. You’re a selfish child. You think only of yourself and nothing of our island.”
Castor closed her fist. “This island is all I think about.”
“You think about having it, not running it. It’s always been a game to you.”

Castor remains an annoying, selfish, egoistical brat, and I can’t stand her. That being said, the author did a great job developing her character and making her consistent throughout both books. Sure, she gave Castor a small hint of a redemption arc near the end, but it was nothing over the top, and while she did soften a little bit, her priorities remained mostly the same, and she didn’t do a complete 180. I like how she made Castor a strong character, yet a character that I hated, and how Castor’s arc made sense in the end. She didn’t just magically become nice and forgot about her ambition just because it suited the plot better. I also really wanted her to get slapped in the face, figuratively or not, and realize the hurt and problems she left in her wake wherever she went because of her selfishness.

The ending leaves an opening for a potential third book, but every loose end is resolved, and I am very satisfied with the ending the characters got. I enjoyed both books, and I like the characters, but I am happy with this being a duology.

My God, this novel was devastatingly brilliant ! BRILLIANT!

The greedy, ruthless empresses are at it again, sending Gen, and friends on two more Impossible Tasks!
Continuing the tale that started in Game of Strength and Storm , this gender-bent telling of Hercules, (with LGBTQIA+ rep to boot !) is full of snarling beasts, fawning/snarky lovers, a refreshing magic system (honestly everything ABOUT this series is refreshing), and heart pounding adventure; there’s a little something for everyone in this novel.

HIGHLY recommend!

Buckle up, buttercups!!! 😉

A huge thank you to Flux Publishing, & the incredible author, Rachel Menard via netgalley for the e-arc of this book!!!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS THE END? I REFUSE TO PART WITH THESE CHARACTERS, YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!!!

When I was at 70% I was like "no way is this ending in this book", same thing when I hit 80%, 90%, then I got to the author's note and saw it was supposed to be the end of their journey and I'm just so????? THIS CANNOT BE THE END, I NEED MORE!!!

Although, the ending did leave room for another book, either following these characters or not. But I'd of course prefer to read countless books about our heroes, I could never get tired of them.

Clash of Fate and Fury is just as amazing as the first book, if not more. I even started to like Castor (but I still don't forgive her for what she did to that poor whale).

I feel like someone put me in a washing machine and tumbled my whole life around, just because I cycled through so many emotions while reading this, and trust me THERE WAS NO TEAR SHORTAGE EITHER.

Rachel Menard somehow managed to pack all the feels into these two books, I don't know what to say except wow.

Gen and Pollux (and Chomp and Andromeda) are my faves still, but like I said Castor is kinda okay to me now, and I'm even more attached to Bale, Flek and Adikia than I already was.

I like Castor and Adikia together, I do however wish that we saw even more of them. Because while I want to believe they'll last and be happy together, I don't feel their love for one another like I do Pollux & Gen's. But maybe they're not in love YET and will be in some future book? This is me campaigning for another one, mhm.

I also didn't get my circus wish. So once again BOOK THREE, PLEASE. And it's okay to end this series on a happy note, but it feels incomplete, there's so much more for the characters to do.

For example if we had seen the main reason the empresses sent Gen on all her labours actually come to pass, then perhaps I'd feel differently. But it's been looming in the background the whole book, and now it's over? I don't think so.

Either way I will be sticking with Rachel Menard, and will read absolutely anything she writes, whether in this world or another.

I’ll try and be as spoiler free here as possible because I truly want everyone to get to experience something like what I did reading book one. Which was really just glee, but not the Traumatising A Generation On TV kind. Picture a Greek mythology inspired labours of Hercules retelling with rival magic girls going head to head to complete deadly tasks at all costs and be granted their greatest desires. Now picture picking up where that left off and launching into an adventure to complete even more deadly tasks (because they hadn’t been through the wringer enough) with appearances from a whole host of mythological creatures (seriously… I wanted to clap every time a new one appeared), all while journeying on a pirate ship captained by a sapphic purple thief that’s ordering around the world’s most dysfunctional found family of characters that pretty much all want to kill and/or kiss each other at all times. And there is danger at every turn. And whales. What’s not to love.

If you enjoyed book one then Clash is not just a cherry but an entire extra sundae on top. It’s beyond exciting and emotional and romantic and clever and I will admit I almost teared up seeing this mess of a team not being at each other’s throats just long enough to do something brave and brilliant together. I highlighted lines like “adorable boots”, “high praise coming from Cas” and “nice shot!” because the GROWTH of it all made me want to put my head through six feet of concrete. I love these characters so much (especially my ruthless little lightning-wielding fave) and I can’t believe their stories end here.

This a book that I tore through so quickly but that will stick with me for a long time. I couldn’t have imagined a more exhilarating conclusion to this duology nor could I recommend it more.

So I know I wasn’t too keen on the first book but so much improved in this one that I quite enjoyed it as a YA fantasy loosely based in Greek mythology. It felt more like a traditional story with harrowing straits, sirens, shipwrecks, fire breathing cranky dogs and more!

The characters grew and learned some hard life lessons and I think their arcs were brought through the story really well. Everyone had to realize that their fates weren’t written in stone and that they needed a team to succeed. Gen had to accept failure and help from her book one rival, Castor. Castor had to accept the help of the team and realize that she’s not a one woman island. I actually liked her in this book. Pollux (and everyone really) also had to accept himself and his powers.

Adikia was a nice addition to the cast but she didn’t get a point of view. There’s the f/f relationship for those who enjoy those aspects. Overall the steam was very light but the relationships themselves were wholesome and good for the characters at the end.

If y’all can’t love yourselves for who you are, how can you expect anyone else to? I think that’s the crutch here. The other crutch is fate and prophecy, which resulted in “the big twist” that I didn’t see coming.

There’s also a ton of action compared to book one and it’s spaced out a little more evenly. I was never bored. Book one took me three weeks to finish, and this one only about four days. I liked the trials and the teamwork and Menard also did a better job bringing overall setting and atmosphere into the book.

The themes of family were still there too, whether it was accepting and fighting for the one you have or finding one that suits you better. Or both. It’s ok to want these things Castor, Pollux, Gen, you guys can do it! You’re made of more than your dreams!

Overall/ TLDR:
I was sketchy on book one but I totally recommend these for teens. The content is clean and there are good themes. 4 stars overall for the duology and for bringing the duology home with a vastly improved second novel

As someone who completely adored Game of Strength and Storm, and immediately added it to my 2022 favorites lists, I was so, so excited to read the sequel, Clash of Fate and Fury. While the first book is probably still my favorite, I also really enjoyed this one, and I’m so glad I got to see Gen and crew go through one more journey.

One of my favorite parts of Game and Strength and Storm was the world building, and that was still definitely true of Clash of Fate and Fury. I’m blown away by how easily I was able to picture every single place the characters visited by just a few sentences from Menard. Additionally, I absolutely love the way this is a Heracles retelling, but also completely different at the same time. Yes, the story draws on Greek mythology, but it does so in such a unique and creative way that I’ve never seen before. It fascinates me, and I hope, even if we don’t get anymore stories from Gen, that we get more books set in this world.

We also got an even deeper dive into the MindWorker and StormMaker magics, which I loved. I said it in my review of the last book, and I’ll say it again: I absolutely love the magic in these books. The fact that StormMakers have the ability to control an entire storm from a tiny vial is genius, especially when you consider some of the more technical facets behind the power that we get a glimpse of in Clash of Fate and Fury. Gen’s power, being a MindWorker, is one that is equally fascinating and terrifying. Because, while she has the ability to talk to animals, she also has the ability to control not only them, but also humans, all with a little drop of her blood. It’s easily a power that could be used for ill, and I appreciated the conversations had about it in this book.

Meanwhile, the characters were just as captivating here as they were in the first book. They have so much depth and each one has their own personality and motivations. Gen was my favorite in the first book, and I’d say that’s pretty much the same here, too, though I really liked Bale as well. I was just as conflicted about Castor during this book, though. She’s so intriguing to read about, but she’s also kind of a terrible person, so rooting for her should be hard, but it’s also not? I don’t really know how to describe it, but Menard does an excellent job of making us care for her, despite how infuriating and self-centered she can be. I kind of love it, haha.

Additionally, I loved the dynamics between our group of main characters. They were all kind of like a powder keg just waiting to explode. Between Gen, Pollux, Bale, Castor, Adikia, and Chomp, hardly any of them got along with each other, but they were still so much fun to follow along. And even though they didn’t always like each other, they still protected each other.

My only complaint would be regarding Gen and Pollux’s relationship. It’s a minor one, which is why I didn’t take any stars off for it, but I just wish that they’d had more conversation about their dynamic, especially concerning Gen’s MindWorker power. Whenever she and Pollux kissed, she would then be able to see into Pollux’s thoughts, which was something that caused some strain between the two of them. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to discuss how romantic relationships don’t always have to be purely physical, but that was never really brought up, which was a bit of a disappointment.

Even so, I really did love Clash of Fate and Fury! It was a fantastic follow up to Game of Strength and Storm, and I had so much fun following Gen and crew on their (maybe) last adventure. I know the acknowledgements made it sound like this’ll be the last, but it was left open enough that a third book could eventually happen, so my fingers are crossed that it will!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and TBR and Beyond Tours for providing me with a digital and physical copy of Clash and Fate and Fury in exchange for my honest opinion.

All Gen wants is to have her father be released from prison and given back his freedom, but his freedom comes at a price. In order for this to happen, Gen makes a deal with the Empresses of Olympia. She must enter enemy territory and steal the legendary golden apples of Hesperides and capture the Elysium Emperor's greatest possession, the beast who wins wars, the Cerberus.

Gen is a MindWorker and is able to control the beasts with a connection forced by blood or saliva, if anyone can bring that beast back, it will be her. Pollux, Gen's boyfriend and a StormMaker, sets out to join her on her quest. But when the Empresses force his sister's hand, Castor is forced to join the team. There's only one problem - Gen and Castor are enemies.

With a MetalBender that has a huge crush on Gen, Pollux's servant companion, Castor's pirate-thief girlfriend along with the three of them, the team embarks in a voyage to complete the Empresses' quest, a quest that was, as they soon come to learn, prophesized by an Oracle.

My thoughts:
I got this ARC from @netgalley and let's just say... I really enjoyed it! I soon realised that this is the second book in the series but it did not matter because the story was written so well, there were no gaps that needed filling. The world created was magical, the powers given to the characters were different and new. The characters were so different but wholesome. I loved the adventure and I loved all the magical creatures that were included in this story. It was emotional and impactful and such a good read.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley (thank you Flux Books and the author) in exchange for an honest review.

The final installment of Rachel Menard’s gender-bent Herculean duology, Clash of Fate and Fury was everything I could have hoped for and more. I’m a very slow reader, and it only took me three days to finish this book as I couldn’t put it down.

The first book (Game of Strength and Storm) was flawless in its own right, but the close to the story saw so much growth in each of its characters, as well as pain and heartache.

In this half, Gen is tasked with two more impossible errands to appease the Empresses and win her father’s freedom: fetch the Golden Apples from Hesperides and the terrifying fire-breathing, three-headed Cerberus guarding the gate to the underworld. To do so, she and her boyfriend, Pollux, must travel to a foreign land that no Olympian has set foot in for hundreds of years.

Employing the help of a MetalWorker with a crush on Gen and her nemesis Castor, they must figure out a way in, find the apples and Cerberus, and come up with a way to attain them and transport them back to Olympia.

They meet all manner of challenges along the way, not limited to the errands themselves. Centaurs, blood-thirsty sea creatures, dangerous waters, magical storms and creatures, oracles, witches and more await their turn at a chance to put an end to their journey.

Menard’s imaginative world, loveably flawed characters, and solid plot impress. I was swept into the story and felt as though I was journeying right alongside Gen, Pollux, and Castor. With both this book and the first, I could tell how much work and craft had gone into making everything perfect.

If you love headstrong—as well as physically strong—females, swoony and swooning love interests, solid magic systems, flawed characters and relationships, adventure, and mythology, you’ll definitely enjoy these books. If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend starting with the first, Game of Strength and Storm. If you’ve read the first one already, well, then what are you waiting for?

tbh I’m always nervous going into second books after I love the first ones. But YALL. THIS BOOK. Rachel Menard owes me compensation for the emotional turmoil she put me through!! this series has been just such a wonderful ride. I loved the first book and I’m so happy to say that the second one was even better! The stakes were higher, the adventures were wilder, and the relationships grew even deeper. it was so beautiful to read this story and I’m really going to miss this series and these characters (though…the ending did leave room for a third book! maybe someday I’ll see my loves again!?!)

My favorite character in the last book was Pollux and im pleased to say that has not changed at all. I will protect Pollux with my life. We must make sure no harm ever comes to that angel!!! In this book, his relationship with Gen really deepens and it was one of my favorite parts of reading this. Watching them grow closer while dealing with all these obstacles was nothing short of beautiful. I love them. As for Gen, tbh I think maybe Pollux does have competition for being my favorite character bc I LOVE GEN!!! she might be one of my favorite characters ever? I feel so seen sometimes reading her chapters. She’s just amazing and I love her.

As for Castor, that girl is an absolute demon but somehow I found a way to love her??? I loved her character arc a lot and if you like evil characters who are secretly maybe not as evil as they pretend to be, you will adore castor and her demonic ways haha. I also want to say just how much I love the side characters too. Flek and Bale and our lovely animal characters are so much fun and the story wouldn’t be the same without them. Ugh I want them all to be happy forever.

Lastly, I have to say that I really admire this duology for how unique it is. It’s inspired by Greek mythology obviously but it’s done in the most unique way. I was a Percy Jackson kid growing up and reading this series reminded me of what it felt like to read PJO for the first time. These books are so much fun and if you’re looking for a cool adventure, amazing found family, and cool magic, definitely read these!!

Thanks soooo much to Flux Books and NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

i was provided an arc of this book via netgalley in exchange for a honest review. thank you to the publisher, the author and netgalley. all thoughts are my own.

this book is a sequel to game of strength and storm, and considering how much i had loved book one, i jumped at the possibility to keep reading their story. in this, we follow gen (and company) as she has to fulfill two extra tasks for the empresses in order to achieve her father's freedom.

i said it in for the first book, but i truly loved this series so much. my only complain is that at the start the pacing felt a bit too slow until things started moving (maybe at the 40 or 35% mark, i'd say? somewhere around there), but once it got moving, i could not put it down. i did want to clarify that first of all since that was my one complain and i dragged a bit during most of the start, only to read everything else in two days barely putting the book down. it might be a me thing, however.

the plot was very fun once the adventure itself started, and i especially liked the mix with the characters. i like them all as characters. gen is great, obviously, as is pollux, but castor is especially fascinating in how herself and not really a good person she is, and how invested i still am in her, how i root for her all the same. she does have a pretty good character arc in this book as well, so castor is kind of my favorite character of the whole series. the side-characters are also characters i enjoy, so overall, this was a great mixture of plot and character that i enjoyed so much reading about. and the ending? it worked so well for me. the relationships and friendships were so fun to read about.

and i said this for the first review, but i truly adore how menard grabbed greek mythology and shifted it to fit this world. i love how it's fun if you enjoy greek mythology, how you can clearly recognize everything that was used to base the characters or events, but also how different it is to the actual mythology. it feels like something that someone who wasn't very interested in greek myths could read with no problem because of the differences, and how original it is (and so it doesn't really require prior knowledge)

overall, i like this serie a lot. i've enjoyed both books a lot.

I loved the first book, and the second didn't fall short. There is still a ton of magic, badass heroines, animal companions, impossible tasks, found families, and romance. And heartbreak, too. Buckle up.

In Clash of Fate and Fury, Gen is tasked with two more impossible errands to appease the Empresses and win her father’s freedom: fetch the Golden Apples from Hesperides and the terrifying fire-breathing, three-headed Cerberus guarding the gate to the underworld. To do so, she must travel to a foreign land that no Olympian has set foot in for hundreds of years. And I love the team she gathered to help her; the sweet Pollux, the cunning Adikia, the crafty Flek, the mysterious Bale, and the bossy and proud Castor.

Gen and Castor reluctantly working together was as chaotic as I thought they would be. I didn't love Gen as much as in the first book, though. I enjoyed Castor a little more because I felt she was more true to her herself than Gen. Anyway, there are centaurs, blood-thirsty sea creatures, dangerous waters, magical storms, and many other challenges along the way, including inner struggles that might send someone to their death. Oh, yes, my heart broke several times, and it was hard to face the chance to lose some of my favourite characters.

I can't wait to read more stories by Rachel Menard!

I got a free copy through Netgalley, this in no way affected my review,

This is the second book in the Labors of Gen series and I’m so happy I discovered this series!

I loved going back to this world which has both Greek mythology and fantasy elements, both things I absolutely love!

In this book we follow Gen, Castor and Pollux after their trials in the first book. Now they have to go on an even more dangerous quest in the neighbouring Empire and I loved it.
It really opened up the world building and I loved all the new places and people we met.

We also learn more about the characters, but here lies my one point of critique. I feel like even though we had our cast of characters go on this journey and learn more about them, I feel like they didn’t change much over the course of the book? I especially hoped to see more depth to Castor, but was left a little disappointed in how she stayed the same throughout this book.

I really hope there will be a third book, as it’s a pretty open ending (though satisfying).

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Clash of Fate and Fury is perfect for readers still interested in Greek Mythology. Continuing the theme of impossible tasks, Gen is put through another set of hurdles. She's immediately, and continually, asked what she will do for family, for ambition, and for freedom. Opening up the world, Clash of Fate and Fury is an action packed sequel which introduces war tension and politics from the beginning. Reading all three of their perspectives - Castor, Pollux, and Gen - immediately gives Clash of Fate and Fury an epic feeling.

Clash of fate and fury 4.5/5 ✨

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced reading copy in exchange for a honest review.

I was so excited to be able to get a copy of book 2!!! I read book one last year and I enjoyed it so much. And book 2 did not disappoint either! I was so excited to get back with Gen, Pollux, and Castor. They make for a great cast of characters as they are all so different from each other!

I enjoyed the new adventures they took us on and the drama throughout. And gosh how do these whales keep getting me in the feels. I enjoyed meeting another country’s oracles and creatures and how the author tied them all together.

Another thing I enjoyed is how each character is very different. Our main POVs keep the characters personality’s well, and I do like that fact personalities weren’t magically fixed or changed. I appreciate how our characters get to experience changes but it has a slower effect on their personality then a 180 turn from them. I also loved our purple hair pirate addition, she was a great fit for Castor.

There was so much great things that happened in this book and I LOVE that it seems to be left open for a third book! And I sure hope the author gets to write it because I know there is so much more to tell!

Summary:

Picking up from the end of the first book. Gen must complete two more labors in order to gain her fathers freedom. She must bring the empresses the legendary golden apples of Hesperides and Cerberus. Gen takes her father out of the prison and realizes his mind is not turkey there anymore. She bring him back to the palace where he must stay until she completes her labors. If she fails her father will be taken back to prison. We also learn Pollux and Gen have been living together.
Pollux however was not him when Gen arrived. Instead he was called back to his isle at the request of his father.

Castor had won the right to become heir to Arcadia but her father still sits the seat. She will only be given it once he vacated it. Adikia (the pirate) pays castor a visit. They kiss and due to Leto knocking on the door to see her father Adikia leaves while castor goes to see her father. Castor learns that Atreus still expects her to fufill her promised engagement to his son Memnon. Failing to do so will result in a breach of contract. She refuses to do so.

Pollux arrives and walks into the discussion between his father, castor, Atreus and Memnon. Due to castor refusing to agree to the engagement Atreus says they will sell illumium to another buyer much to their fathers dismay. They leave. Castor still refuses to change her mind saying they are bluffing. Her father has said castor has ruined the island and he will make her life miserable. her father says he will talk to the empresses and see if they will force the marriage to keep the illumium they use to make their storms- a weapon the empresses want. Her father calls her a selfish child and asks Pollux to help him get castor to marry Memnon. Pollux declined to help.

At the end of Game of Strength and Storm Gen was faced with the shocking reality that the Olympian Empresses had set her up. Despite winning their impossible competition and defeating the hydra, a feat no one else had ever accomplished, they named her rival Castor the winner and denied Gen her prize; her father’s freedom. The Empresses give Gen another opportunity to save her father, another two tasks more impossible than the last. All she has to do is bring them the legendary golden apples of Hesperides and the monstrous Cerberus, both of which are in the Elysium Empire. The Olympian Empire has an uneasy truce with the Elysium Empire after a history of war, and Gen knows that her actions will undoubtedly provoke another war. But with her father out of prison and now in the Empresses “care”, she has no choice.

Meanwhile, Castor is not enjoying her win as much as she expected. Her father, the current Duke of Arcadia, is fighting her at every turn and refusing to pass power over to her despite the Empresses’ decree. When Cas’ actions from her competition with Gen in the previous book come back to haunt her she hatches a daring plan, one that aligns her path with her twin Pollux (Lux) and his girlfriend Gen. While Cas can’t stand Gen, and she’s never got along with her Lux, she needs them both if she’s going to pull off her plan and save Arcadia from financial ruin.

Joining these three in Clash of Fate and Fury are other characters we met in the first book; Bale, Lux’s servant who is much more than he seems, Adikia a mischievous pirate that helps them sail to the Elysium Empire and Flek, a Deaf MetalBender who’s metal magic is crucial to their quest. That’s the human characters, and there’s of course Gen’s animal companions; the grumpy and troublesome purple haired dog Chomp and her curious young whale Andromeda.

The stakes were high in the first book, and in Clash of Fate and Fury Menard has taken them even higher. Our unconventional group has to find a way to work together in unfamiliar territory where they know no one and have everything to lose if they fail. The result is a book filled with adventure, danger and great character dynamics. There’s more than one type of “clash” happening in this book, from the characters to the two empires and much more. All of which is set to the Geek myth inspired world that Menard has created. I loved her world-building in the first book, and in this one we get to see even more.

I sometimes find that sequels that promise higher stakes don’t necessarily deliver, however, Menard certainly does in Clash of Fate and Fury. There’s plenty of action, real risk and consequences that leaves even the most stubborn of characters shaken.

There’s a lot packed into this sequel, and I enjoyed the introduction of the new characters, Adikia and Flek as permanent team members. Both were interesting characters in the first book but only played brief roles, and their presence on the mission allowed Menard to explore a lot of different angles. Notable for me was Flek being from an Island where all living creatures were born without the ability to hear, an evolutionary response to the deadly shrieking caterpillars on the Island. He is asked to come on the mission because he’s the only MetalBender they know, and during their time together everyone learns how to lip-read and speak his language, Croecian (sign language). I was impressed in the first book that Menard had not just included a disabled character, but created an entire culture and civilisation that is disabled, and it was great to see more of Flek in this book.

Likewise, in regard to representation, Adikia appeared briefly in Game of Strength and Storm and there was some romantic tension between her and Cas. The synopsis already names her as Cas’ girlfriend, so it’s not a spoiler for me to say that the tension continues in Clash of Fate and Fury.

I didn’t realise that this was a duology, so the ending felt a bit abrupt to me at first simply because I wasn’t expecting it. On the one hand, I wish we were getting more adventures of these characters as I feel though there are many more stories to be told. However, I can see why Menard chose to end it where she did. Another set of quests, despite being true to the lore of Hercules, would have felt a little too ridiculous and tedious especially considering the situation.

Overall Clash of Fate and Fury had everything I wanted in it, and while I’m sad to see these characters go it’s a fond farewell and a thumbs up from me!

Many thanks to the author, Netgalley, and the publisher for the arc and the opportunity to read and review the book.

Thoughts:

- I was so excited to be reading this eARC as I loved book one soo much. And I must say this does not disappoint.
- I loved the artwork on the cover as much as I liked the cover of book one.
- This is the second instalment of the YA Fantasy Gender-bent retelling of Hercules and a plot drawing on Greek Mythology but in a creatively unique way unlike what I have read or come across before.
- The book flows in a Multiple POV of Gen, Lux, and Castor.
- This book too has LGBTQ+ representation but is more prominent compared to book one which I also loved.
- Fast-paced and the writing was immaculate I was hooked from page one and was just FLYING through the book. I couldn't put this book down. I literally read this in one sitting.
- Just like in book one I was mesmerized by the world-building and the characters.
- Characters are unique and stand on their own with their own stories and personalities.
- Such an unusual set to be grouped with all their differences. But I love how they come together despite their differences, evolve and grow on their own as well as part of the group. This is worse than having Harry and Malfoy in one room trust me.
- I can't stand selfish Castor but I also cannot hate her… I kind of get her too. it has left me in a tight spot I tell ya :D
- OMW, I loved the introduction of the Oracles and it reminded me of the Fates from the Caraval universe as they were just as deceiving and vague.
- I loved how the Greek Mythology of Atlas was portrayed in this book.
- The Sirens and the stormy seas reminded me of scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean.
- I loved the author's style of writing which was fueling my imagination and visualization of each scene and place.
- The twists of this book were heartbreaking and nerve-wracking with almost little to no foreshadowing. I loved the twists of the Oracles and how it links back to book one. Nothing happens without a reason.
- Also, I would pick travelling by Whale over travelling by ship any day!
- This had a few tropes such as Found family, Forced Proximity on a ship, minor slow-burn romance, and most of all enemies-to-frienemies-to-bearable-friends.
- I loved how the title of the book was referenced and the significance behind it. It had my heart so full of joy.
- I loved the ending and I knew the Empresses could never be trusted. It had somewhat of a happily ever after but yet it left me with a feeling of incompleteness.
- I want to know if the other kingdom would wage war and how the war would unfold, how Gen and the gang will be a part of the war, and if Gen would find some way to save her father from the claws of the Empresses.

𝗠𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the second book (end of duology, and possible setup for future stories wink wink) of the author's genderbent retelling of Hercules' tasks! The books are set in a Greek mythology inspired fantasy world, and they are chock full of amazing references and mythologies, and I absolutely frickin loved it.

This book is set a few weeks after the end of book 1, where the MCs Gen, Castor, and Pollux have to travel to the neighbouring kingdom of Elysium, and bring back the legendary golden apples of Hesperidea and the monster, three-headed dog Cerberus.

💫 I already mentioned the Greek mythology stuff, but I'm gonna mention it again because everything was done so, so well. I love Greek myth stories, and I was screaming at every new reference 😭
💫 I totally loved the angst in the relationships and friendships in this one! They all had to evolve and grow as a group, and deal with their emotions, and I very much loved it.
💫 The ending omg!! It was so perfect! It's a hea for everyone, though there are many possible future storylines (if the author decides to come back to this world, I'm gonna be first in line)
💫 As in book 1, I really loved the use of magic in this world. The magical powers are really unique and cool, and I loved visualising it all.
💫 The meaning of the title is explained at one point, and I definitely did scream at how perfect it was 😭

If YA fantasy is your thing, and/or if you like Greek mythology, check this book out!!

Many thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for giving me an advanced copy ❤️ I can't wait to read more by this author!

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
Clash of Fate and Fury is a solid sequel, following up on the excellent Game of Strength and Storm. I love this fun spin on Greek mythology, particularly the Labors of Hercules, and the story continues in that vein here. The magic alone gets a much deeper dive, further expanding on the world Rachel Menard created with the MindWorkers and StormMakers.
The characters are still quite interesting and fun. Gen remains a great protagonist, even with all the challenges that get thrown at her. Castor remains a nuanced character, being a bit of an anti-heroine who does terrible things, but also being fairly easy to sympathize with. And Menard creates great dynamics between the group of major characters overall, from the enmity and reluctant allyship between Gen and Castor to Gen and Pollux’s romantic relationship, and more.
With this book concluding the characters’ journey, I like how everything overall wrapped up with the final challenges that the group are tasked with. The stakes are high to the point I was invested, and that combined with my personal investment in the characters made the story rewarding.
This is a solid second book, closing out a brilliant debut duology, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys Greek mythology and/or YA fantasy.

OH.MY.GOD! Thank goodness for Netgalley, was able to obtain a copy of this book. At first, I requested for a copy because of the cover and the blurb. Diiving into the book without any expectations, I was blown away by how awesome this was!

Second book on a series (but can be read as a stand alone), takes us on the adventures of Gen, 17 year old Mindbender heroine all the way from Olympia to Elysium in order to obtain the legendary golden apples of Hesperides and the monstrous Cerberus. Soubds familiar? This series referenced the 12 Labors of Hercules and more...

1. I like the fact that the Hercules was an Amazonian -strong willed, family oriented and just simply loves fiercely
2. Castor and Pollux - I really love how the author took these 2 mythology personas and shaped in as driving force characters on the series.
3. The addition of magic system + mythological aspect is the bomb. It was written delicately and deliberately at the same time.
4. The storyline was just 🫶 I know I was reading but man, the descriptives are so particular that my imagination was also on overdrive 😅 I felt like watching all the action items on the sidelines and I have no complaints at all!
5. LGBTQ+ represented well. I usually comment on how this representation goes on books as either try hard or lacking sensibilities but on this one, just sinoly written beautifully

Clash of fate and fury:
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me this e-arc. All opinions are my own.
After (winning) the trials from the empresses Gen and her friends have to first do more of the empresses bidding to get Gen’s father freedom. It was quite emotional reading the interactions that Gen had with her dad, it was so sad because I understand why she isn’t wasn’t so open to her father. I honestly think that Pollux is even better than the previous book. (Butttt Castor is still my favorite and I’m glad we got to see more of her in this book.) I loved the magic system and how the author added the mythology is well written. The author wrote each character so different that I never had a problem knowing whose pov it was. There was some parts especially in the 20% that was a bit slow but overall it was a constant pace.
Overall I recommend this series to anyone who likes mythology, amazing written heroines and different pov chapters.
Overall 4.5 stars

I haven’t read the first book in the series, but really liked Gen and Chomp, her companion pet. I love that Gen has silver hair, I always wanted a unique hair color and love that she has one. This really connects her with me as a reader. I thought the relationship that she had with her father is important as many people have the same thing happening with their older parents, who sometimes forget things. I love this writer how she writes and relates characters and situations to her readers. I love the world that the author created for Gen to live in. I loved the cover of this book also, it is a fantastic choice for a cover. This book did move a little slow in the beginning but then picked up quick, and I was happy to read this one! I loved the Greek mythology aspect, and this is the story of Gen, Pollux, and Castor’s journey since the first book. For fans of Percy Jackson and Greek mythology you will like this story with Gen.

I give CLASH OF FATE AND FURY ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!

Wow, oh wow! What a wonderful book full of magic and Greek mythology lore. I love these character-driven plots and whole heartily was rooting for Gen, Pollux, and even Castor, who is a delightful antagonist, or is she?

The relationship between Gen and Pollux is tested as they journey with Pollux's nemesis Castor and the author does a beautiful job using this throughout the story. The character arc has you questioning whether or not Castor is as evil as you thought is brilliant. I'm still debating on that! 😅

This is the second book in the series but that didn't bother me because the author does a wonderful job filling you in without removing you from the storyline. But now that I read the second book I'll have to read the first. I mean, how can I not!?!

Thank you, Rockstar, Flux, and Rachel Menard for an epic journey filled with delightful characters. Watch out Harry Potter!

The thrilling second novel in a fantasy retelling of Hercules.

When I read the first book in this series, I didn’t think it would get any better. However, I was wrong. A bit like Percy Jackson, this novel blends Greek Mythology with a new fantasy setting, and a wonderful story.

Gen is honestly one of my favourite female characters, and I loved watching her grow from the first novel. Her relationships with the other characters, and Pollux were extremely well-written, and I loved how she’s shifted in her feelings towards some of them from the first novel.

I read this easily in an afternoon, simply because I could not put it down. Like the first novel, the story draws you in from the first few pages, and it feels impossible to stop reading.

Thank you to NetGalley, Flux Books and the author for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I read the first book about a year ago, but it was easy to jump right back into this mythological world. The games from book one are over for everyone but Gen. She either completes the potentially deadly tasks given to her by the Empresses or her father will be sent back to prison. Castor is looking for a way to save her kingdom that doesn't include marrying a man she doesn't love. Pollux is ready to separate himself from his father and kingdom forever. Gen and Castor may hate each other, but they will have to work together to accomplish their goals.

This is an entertain sequel with new dangers, adventures, and mythological creatures to conjure. I devoured the pages and think fans of mythology will too.

While you can probably read this book without reading book one, I suggest starting with Game of Strength and Storm.

NOTE: Thank you to Rachel Menard and FLUX Books for reaching out to me to review Clash of Fate and Fury, Book 2 of the Labours of Gen. After reviewing Book 1, I am honoured to have once again been asked to provide an honest review.

Menard has done it again.

I loved the retellings of the labours of Heracles, and to see this story continue in much the same fashion? Wonderful. Stunning. Absolutely and utterly *perfect.*

Mythological retellings are a dime a dozen at the moment, particularly Greek mythology retellings, but I am continuously impressed with both the quality of Menard's work and the refreshing aspects of how such beautiful stories are being retold.

We're back with Cas, Pollux, and Gen. Cas is going in one direction, Gen another. But it's the Empresses pulling the strings. But to what end? This book is mythology come to life. With non-stop action, Menard pulls you into the story. The reader gets to know the characters intimately and becomes invested in their trials.

I love how creative the magic is in this world. It's a bonus to the mythology that gives both books something more, making it almost impossible to put down. And this cover is even more stunning on the paperback. This is a fantastic read from start to finish. It's a fun yet sad journey, as I'm not ready to let the characters go.

What I liked:
If you read Game of Strength and Storm, you know that the Empresses hold the world in their clutches; if you want the impossible, you ask them. Gen did that in the first book and completed most of the tasks given to her, but now she has been tasked with two more to save her father's life. She must retrieve the legendary golden apples and the impossible beast Cerberus. This second book is full of snarling beasts, a slow-burning romance, a unique magic system, and impossible quests that use some creative imagination to complete.
Final Verdict:
I loved how this follow-up delved deeper into the complex characters through this set of seemingly impossible tasks.

Thanks, Netgalley and Publisher for the opportunity to read and review!
Amazing read, just like the first book! I love the imaginative world that the author created and the amazing main characters who are so lovably NOT perfect at all! There's a solid character development, which makes the characters get under your skin and you love them all exactly because of their flawed nature! There's amazing adventure scenes, character development, intriguing magical creatures and crafty world-building, Amazing second installment and I will always recommend the series!

It was as amazing as the first book! I really enjoyed this second installment of the series.
Gen and Castor reluctantly working together as a dream team was a little less than chaotic, but I love it! Pollux is as dear as always although he gave me a scare in the middle part of the book. My heart broken for Bale, though.
Pacing and writing pace were as immaculate as the first book! I rec this duology for those who are interested in reading genderbent Herculean story, with sweet cinnamon roll LI, and all the adventures!
