The Governess Chronicles #2

A Governess Should Never... Deny a Duke

Rate this book
“So tell me, Miss Beaujeu, why should I employ you as governess?”

A question to rouse fear within the breast of any prospective governess but for Isabelle, a lady with impeccable references and tightly pinned hair, it barely raises a brow.

But this rugged Welsh duke of an employer is unlike any other: dubbed Mean, Moody & Mysterious in gossip columns, he’s known to scowl a path through London society. And why have three governesses fled his employ within the last twelvemonths?

"I appoint you as governess. When can you start?"

Rhys Cadogan, the Duke of Aberdare, never procrastinates. And besides, with a house party to be hosted at his coastal estate, the sole purpose of which is to find him a wife, he’s in somewhat of a rush.

But this drab-gowned paragon of a governess is unlike any other: lauded in her references, she exudes composure and intelligence, a perfect fit for his troubled niece. So why do Miss Beaujeu’s eyes also flash with a wild silvered gleam?

The Prudent Governess and the Passionate Duke.

One should never judge a duke by his Mean, Moody & Mysterious reputation or a governess by her tightly pinned hair, for beneath both tamed façades lay wildness and shared passions – not to be denied.

With forbidden kisses on stormy nights, a house full of prospective brides, a scandalous rake of an heir, dragon folklore and cinnamon biscuits, the vocation of governess has never been so thrilling…

A fun, heart-warming stand-alone Regency romance. This tale contains sensual scenes.

Emily grew up in the north of England on a diet of historical romance and strong tea.

Unfortunately, you couldn’t study Regency slang, so she did the next best thing and gained a degree in Classics and History instead. This ‘led’ to an eight-year stint in engineering.

Having left city life, she now lives in a dilapidated farmhouse where her days are spent writing, fixing the leaky roof, battling the endless vegetation and finding pictures of well-tied cravats.

I went back and read an old review of mine about a book that Windsor wrote, and I loved. What has happened...did I change my reading habits, or have I just become more of a mood reader, or the subject was not for me. I struggled to get through this book, and many have enjoyed it. Perhaps having a hero that has no angst but is just a nice man did not add enough spice for me. But whatever, I was bored through most of the story. The spicy bits at the end were not enough to do it for me. So alas this book is a 3* Nice only.

A very sweet, pleasant love story. I have no complaints whatsoever, it was well-written, the author has a superb way of telling a story and infuses a lot of wit into her writing.

The hero was introduced to us as a Welsh Duke that’s known as Mean, Moody and Mysterious. I honestly did not get grumpy vibes from him at all. He was grieving his brother’s death, but I detected sadness more than mean and moody. He was always courteous, patient, likes to read romantic poetry at night in his library…. An all-around nice guy. It’s been awhile since I had read one of those, and I didn’t know how to process it at first.

The heroine was a newly hired governess to the hero’s orphaned niece. I found her to be calm, fair and patient with those around her, dedicated to her job and students, and a perfect match for the hero.

Actually there was a great variety of characters from servants to family members. I loved how the governess/heroine integrated into the household, and how she championed the young niece of the hero thru her grief issues.

If anything, it took me awhile to initially get into the story because it was such a calm love story with nothing riveting taking place. You need to sit back, relax, and just enjoy the love story unfolding.

Overall: 4.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥
Humor: Yes!
Perspective: Third person from both hero and heroine

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from The Ton and Tartans Book Club )

Should I read in order?
This is fine to pick up alone. (At least, it was my first by her and I felt fine with that!)

Basic plot:
A Duke needs a governess for his unruly 15 year old niece, and our governess needs her next post after she’s done with her prior pupil.

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency time period (1816)
- Wales setting!
- A bit of a gothic feel – a castle in Wales, a mystery, clanging chains in hallways and a moody, mysterious duke to round it out
- Low steam – 1 full scene and some kisses
- Child in the story – Hero’s 15 year old niece has decent amount of page time
- Class difference feel – Duke hero/governess heroine

Ages:
- Heroine is 27, hero is 34

My thoughts:
This was my first Emily Windsor and definitely won’t be my last! I found myself really sucked into this book from the beginning and love the humor, banter, and playful writing.

I did have a complaint for the first half and it was that I felt like the hero and heroine weren’t spending time together. It seemed there was a lot of page time with servants, house guests, the niece, but I just wanted them together more! But that got better by the midway mark and I was back to really loving this book.

My favorite thing about this story was the romance. Romantic things (to me) happened. There were looks across a room. There were touches and almost touches. There were words said that felt and probed, searching for the same connection. There was protection and worry and butterflies and funny banter and giddy watching each other...I love falling in love and I felt it here. And you’d think I find that in all romance novels but I absolutely don’t. I felt their love. The side characters were so bright and spirited and just brought the whole thing to wonderful life.

I really enjoyed both our heroine and hero and I especially loved going to Wales and the Welsh language being interspersed in the story. The ending tugged on my heart.

I also knew going in she was a touch lower steam, so that helped me with the one flame haha but she also had great tension to me! I really enjoyed their love story.

This is my first EW book. I was attracted by the blurb (even though the cover was so-so) but it did not prepare me for what I would find in the book. Oh my... the book was amazingly wonderful ❤!! The story, the characters, the setting... all brought about the purest form of sweet and uplifting romanticism with a capital R! EW is a first class writer, with intelligent, funny and emotional prose. A really swoon worthy read for those susceptible to tender and swept over your feet romance 🥰!

I loved the leads. Isabelle and Rhys were both extremely agreeable and charming characters. Isabelle was a lovely heroine: noble, compassionate, intelligent but also self-reliant and passionate. Her inner remarks were very witty and made me laugh and smile, a lot 😁. Rhys was the perfect Regency hero, as swoon worthy with a taste of forbidden as a Bronte hero, but much, much less dark and dashing 😍! Those two were a match made in heaven being both fans of romantic poesy. But don't mistake them for being cheesy namby-pambies. Oh no, they both have intense passionate depths that can ignite the cold and rainy nights of Wales 🔥🔥🥵!

EW's writing talent was really a joy to read. Her depictions of Regency Wales were atmospheric and full of life where I could really picture the beautiful and enchanting Wales she described. The romance was written masterfully at a smoldering pace, subtly building the angst and feelings, and also intense at climatic moments of the plot. I was literally clutching at my bosom, breathing forgotten, hanging feverishly on EW's every word during key scenes 😂😅☺! And I am not a natural fan of poesy, but the way EW wrote Byrne's poems... I could become a quick afficionado! Those declarations from Rhys, esp. the proposal one... *faints*😍

And the humour, omg, the wicked humour! So many laughs! I am still reeling from the dove story 🤣🤣🤣! And the gurgling sods! And she also created a great cast of secondary characters, esp. the good ones, who each had real character depth. I especially loved Mari, Hugh and Mrs Pugh! It is worth also noting that the French in the book was correct grammatically (which I find rare in many books!) even if I have some doubt on the use of the informal tone in some places, given the characters' background and the setting.

Note to Cousin Elen: I have never been to Wales, but I kind of feel affronted on behalf of Welsh people 🤣😅! To bring about the supposedly noblest brides to be of the land, with the purest and bravest of bloodlines... and end with some of the most shallow and perfidious people? Lol! Poor Cousin Elen 😅! But they had the merit to have all their evil efforts bond Rhys even closer to Isabelle 😉😋!

P.S. I swear when I was nearing the end of the epilogue, I was already gathering my thoughts about my review and how I would include my dream wish for Gwen having her own book with a wish upon a star storyline inspired by this book plot when oh my goodness, I literally jumped and shouted when

P.S.2 Any chance for Hugh's book? I would love to swoon for him!

P.S.3 The book title is a smidge misleading. It could be interpreted as the book having a dominant type of H being all Alpha on the submissive h... but not at all. Rhys was love himself, respectful yet passionate and sexy. He treated Isabelle with care and respect, as his equal ❤!

Miss Isabelle Beaujeu is surprised to learn her newest assignment as governess to the Duke of Aberdare's niece Mari, is not in London as she assumed, but in Wales! Not ideal, but the addition of a ducal household on her résumé is a coup she cannot pass up, especially considering her heritage. French by birth, Isabelle and her mother escaped the uprising in France thanks to her father, but sadly he wasn’t as lucky and her mother died not long after leaving Isabelle to be raised by a distant relative. But her world was turned upside down once more when she learned her guardian was the one who betrayed her father. So she left and with the help of some friends, was able to secure a post as governess. Again, not ideal, but it provides her with an income and independence, which is worth more than gold, as she never plans to marry.

Rhys Cadogan, the Duke of Aberdare, an English title he never expected to inherit and one not nearly as comfortable as his Welsh title the Earl of Llanedwyn needs a wife. After years of hoping for love, Rhys knows he can wait no longer, especially after the death of his twin brother and heir Tristan. As his new heir is his cousin Hugh, an unrepentant rake with no desire to assume the duties of either title, Rhys agrees to allow his spinster cousin Lady Elen to throw a house party to introduce him to several possible brides. But try as he might, Rhys cannot seem to focus on any of the prospective brides when his niece's intriguing governess is around. He knows she has secrets and knows that he should not be wasting time with her, but when someone makes it clear that they have it out for her, nothing will stop him from protecting the woman who has finally captured his heart.

What a great addition to this series! The book is well-written, nicely paced, and has a well-done mystery seamlessly woven into the romance. Rhys and Isabelle’s romance is a slow-burning love story, filled with secrets, great secondary characters, intrigue, warm love scenes, surprising revelations, and finally, a truly lovely HEA ending complete with an epilogue. This is the second book in the series, but it is loosely connected and could easily be read out of order or as a standalone title. I enjoyed many things about this title, but I would have to say that, I especially loved that the book was set in Wales, it is such a nice change of pace from the typical English/Scottish locale settings and really enhanced my reading experience. In my opinion, this is one of this author’s best books to date and I highly recommend it!

"A Governess Should Never... Deny a Duke" is the story of Isabella and Rhys.

A French governess with a mysterious past, a brooding Welsh Duke, a lost teenager, loads of secrets, hauntings, drama and revelations made this a partly interesting read.
I have to say the first half kept me hooked but I lost interest in the second half and skimmed it.
It was OK!

Emily Windsor’s newest historical romance, A Governess Should Never… Deny a Duke, is the second book in The Governess Chronicles, and it is a delightful read! It has wonderful characters, a fantastic found family, and a swoon-worthy romance.

When Miss Isabelle Beaujeu procures a governess position for the Duke of Aberdare’s niece, she didn’t realize it was not in London but in Wales. Though not thrilled with the idea, Isabelle can’t pass up the chance of working for a Duke, as it will help her in obtaining future jobs. Rhys Cadogan never expected to be a Duke, but when his beloved brother dies, he inherits the title and a grief-stricken niece. Determined to do right by the people who now depend on him, especially his niece, Rhys hires Isabelle to serve as her governess. He also enlists the help of his cousin Elen to find him a Duchess.

Elen arranges a house party with numerous possible matches for Rhys, but as much as the women try to tempt him, Rhys only has eyes for the intelligent and enigmatic Isabelle. And when Isabelle appears to be the target of some nefarious acts, Rhys will do anything to protect her. Can this pair figure out who is targeting her? And will they give in to their feelings for each other even though many obstacles stand in their way?

Isabelle and Rhys are fantastic protagonists! A French woman with a tragic past, Isabelle is strong, independent, and intelligent. She’s also an excellent teacher. She is so intuitive and compassionate, especially when it comes to her charge. Known for being mean, moody, and mysterious, Rhys is actually an honorable man with a strong sense of family, and it’s clear that he wants what is best for those he loves. Intelligent and capable, Rhys still feels out of his depth and unprepared for the responsibilities thrust upon him. They are both well-rounded and layered characters whose individual stories are as engaging as their journey together as a couple.

The love story between Isabelle and Rhys is, of course, my favorite part of the story. Windsor sure knows how to write a swoon-worthy romance! Isabelle and Rhys have amazing chemistry, and their banter, intellectual conversations, and romantic moments are wonderful. I like how they start as friends before their feelings develop into something more. I also love the integration of poetry and how important it is to each of the protagonists. For both, it is a way to express themselves and deal with their emotions. This becomes an interest that further connects them, as does their appreciation for literature in general. Plus, poetry, especially the poetry they recite, is so romantic!

The secondary characters are also dynamic, and I love the found family aspect of the book. Rhys’s family and the people who work for him are all well-developed, and they add so much to the story. Rhys’s housekeeper, Mrs. Pugh, is dramatic and funny, Mari, Rhys’s niece, is a delight, and Rys’s cousin is comical. I love the setting too. Wales sounds like a beautiful and majestic place, much like the castle and lands Rhys owns, and the way that Rhys talks about it, and the way the author uses sensory language to describe it, very much complements the romantic nature of the story and Rhys and Isabelle’s relationship.

With secrets, intrigue, mysterious plots, devious house guests, lovable characters, and more, the novel also addresses topics like grief, racism, war, friendship, and more. It’s a great read, and one I’d highly recommend to readers of historical romance!

Thanks to Emily Windsor for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

It took me ages to finish since it was so dull 😴 The idea of a romance between duke-governess was good, but it wasn't enough. I liked the last 10% of the book since I appreciated finding out the MC's secrets, but the ending was too sentimental for me. Too much romanticism can be unrealistic..

I’m a fan of Emily Windsor since the very beginning, so I may be biased, but she NEVER let me down so far. And in this book she really excelled herself! Isabelle and Rhys’s story is sweet, funny and most of all wonderfully romantic. Yes, I know, romance is supposed to be romantic, but I can assure you that it’s not always the case. Emily’s books have a romantic quality that transpires in every word her characters exchange, in every gorgeous description she writes. This time I also smiled quite a lot while reading and the touch of angst every now and then only helped understand the characters better and forward the plot to the happy ending. As always, the side characters are a crucial part of the book and they are vivid and full rounded as the main ones (loved the butler and the housekeeper!). So much so that I can’t wait to read their stories in the upcoming books…
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another beautiful story from Emily Windsor!

What a wonderfully romantic book! Rhys and Isabella are wonderful main characters, both hiding their true selves from the world as they struggle with grief…but discovering a kindred spirit in each other. The supporting characters are delightful. I’m hoping for a future story for the “Scandalous Mr. Cadawalader”!!! Ms. Windsor writes with such depth and richness of character and setting. I always feel like I’m a part of the story…and am always sad when the story ends and I have to leave! There is a bit of mystery and intrigue…a perfect amount of humor…and so much romance!

I received this book as an ARC and freely offer my review and recommendation.

Thank you so much to Emily for the eARC of “A Governess Should Never… Deny a Duke”!

“With forbidden kisses on stormy nights, a house full of prospective brides, a scandalous rake of an heir, dragon folklore and cinnamon biscuits, the vocation of governess has never been so thrilling…”

There is a reason Emily Windsor is one of my favorite authors. This book has everything I adore - found family; swoonworthy MCs; depth; gorgeous prose; parts that make me lol; and a charming, lovable rogue puttering about somewhere. This second installment in the “A Governess Should Never…” series continually delivers.

I always love Windsor’s characters - from the MCs, to the supporting, to the side. I hope I’m right in that I smell stories coming for Scandalous Hugh and maybe a certain talented harpist (sad that someone who plays a harp is not called a harpy)? And hopefully for Gwen and a certain gentleman she’s pined after who may hopefully reappear on her travels?

This book will bring you to tears: from yearning, from heartbreak, and most of all, from love. But it isn’t just romantic love - it’s the love between friends, family members, the family you create. I think Windsor is a master of creating cohesive, believable, and so very lovable families - whether by blood or by bond.

Friends, get your hands on this little treasure when it is released next week, Thursday, July 7th! I’m already clamouring for Windsor’s next work (so excited for all of you to read this jewel)!

A Governess Should Never… Deny a Duke is the newest book from Emily Windsor. It is the second book in the series called the Governess Chronicles. This book can be read as a stand alone quite easily. This novel takes place in Wales which, I think, adds a bit of whimsy to the storyline.

Miss Isabelle Beaujeu was looking for a new job, as her current young lady was getting married soon. She interviewed with the Duke of Aberdare, Rhys Cadogan and was hired. Her young charge Mari is full of life and energy, as Isabelle finds out quickly, but also continues to suffer from the loss of her father.

Meanwhile, Rhys’s cousin is determined to get him married and has invited EVERY eligible young lady of good standing to stay at the castle for a house party. This becomes a bit of a tangled web when not everyone is pleased with the attention the governess Isabelle is getting. That’s when things get creepy.

I enjoyed the novel. I enjoyed the sparks that Rhys and Isabelle had. I loved the castle as a great setting for the story. I would suggest you not start the book at night (FYI - you can’t put the book down). A Governess Should Never… Deny a Duke by Emily Windsor is a great read.

A Top Pick at Roses are Blue: https://wp.me/p3QRh4-1AS

Isabelle Beaujeu has been working as governess for ten years, since she was the tender age of only seventeen. As a young child, she and her mother fled their native France to escape the madness of the revolution. Isabelle’s father was a victim of that madness, and illness claimed her mother only a year later. Her guardians in England treated her well, but she had her own reasons for choosing a life of servitude over one of ease and comfort. Her new assignment is to become governess to Mari, the niece of a duke, though one with a dubious reputation. Much to Isabelle’s chagrin, instead of traveling to warm climes, the duke is packing up his family to reside in his holdings in Wales.

Rhys Cadogan, Duke Aberdare, is doing his best to raise his orphaned niece, the child of his beloved twin brother who died a year ago. Rhys is still grieving, while trying to be a parent, and still managing all his properties and businesses. His seriousness has caused him to be dubbed as Mean, Moody, and Mysterious. If that weren’t enough, his cousin is insistent that he finally marry in order to produce a child, as his current heir is a notorious rake. In order to facilitate the duke’s choosing a bride, his cousin has decided to hold an extended house party with many hopeful young ladies attending.

Isabelle is the fourth governess for Mari this year, but the two form a connection. Isabelle can certainly sympathize with Mari’s grief over her father’s death, and her compassion and wisdom help Mari. It doesn’t take long for the duke to notice Isabelle’s positive influence, as well as her strength and calmness, although he expects there is some fire within her. Isabelle also begins to see that the Mean, Moody, and Mysterious man is pure gold underneath. When she spies him taking a swim in the ocean, she sees that the outside matches his character. She never, ever has had any personal involvement with anyone in the households she’s worked in, but, then, she’s never felt these feelings for anyone before. Rhys has his own code of not importuning anyone under his protection, but Isabelle may be just what he has been searching for.

A GOVERNESS SHOULD NEVER DENY A DUKE is perfectly paced and written, allowing Isabelle’s and Rhys’ stories and characters to unfold, and their love to develop. I fell in love with both of them, even as I felt their pain, saw their strengths, and watched them finally find true happiness. Rhys is a genuine hero, a gentleman, a poet, and a romantic – a man to swoon over! Isabelle is kind and compassionate, despite her own personal tragedies. Their love and passion burst off the pages, while all the secondary characters, even the rakish heir, provided smiles and entertainment. I loved reading this book – I’m still smiling through a delicious book hangover. This is one I will be reading again and again. Emily Windsor’s writing just gets better and better, and she has become one of my favorite authors, one I most heartily recommend.

A Governess Should Never… Deny a Duke is the second installment in The Governess Chronicles by Emily Windsor. Even though this is part of a series, the story is perfectly readable as a standalone.

27 year old Isabelle Violette de Beaujeu is a governess with almost a decade of experience under her belt, having earned an impeccable reputation for herself. Her newest charge is the 15 year old niece of the Duke of Aberdare. Even though 34 year old Rhys Cadogan has a reputation for being mean, moody, and mysterious, it does not deter Isabelle from seeking the position, one more milestone towards making headway in her retirement funds.

From the get go, the Duke’s sheer masculinity takes Isabelle’s breathe away, or so it would have she tells herself, if she weren’t made of sterner stuff. Likewise, Rhys is drawn towards the spirit and fire that is evident when Isabelle loses that rigid control she exerts on herself.

However, a governess has no space to dream about frivolous things like love and desire, especially when it involves the likes of a Duke, who for all intents and purposes is on the hunt for a bride. What neither Rhys nor Isabelle realize is that when it comes right down to it, they are both two halves of one soul, drawn towards a shared future, irrespective of the circumstances that brought them together.

From one breathless encounter to heated stolen kisses, Isabelle comes to the realization of the kindness that is inherent in the Duke, the passion that he hides behind the at times aloof facade of his, and the dreams that he harbors for the kind of love that Isabelle herself yearns for but never hopes to find.

I loved this installment in the series and enjoyed both Rhys and Isabelle. Rhys is the kind of hero that is the right mix of tenderness and masculinity that sweeps you off your feet. His keen intelligence and his kindness draws the reader towards him like a moth to flame, and it is not just Isabelle that falls hopelessly in love with him.

Isabelle is the kind of heroine readers root for in every sense. With a past that still haunts her, Isabelle is someone who has lived true to her values and principles and made a name for herself in her profession. Even when the Duke tempts her so, Isabelle tries to tell herself that it is not for the likes of her, but alas, love does have a strange way of seeking one out when you are least looking for it.

The style of writing that Ms. Windsor brings to the genre is evocative, the portrayal of the yearning of both characters in this novel the kind that makes for an immersive reading experience, and the witty nature of the inner monologues and the dialogues which keeps the pages turning. The secondary characters added vibrancy to the story as it unfolded, many of whom I would definitely love to read more about.

Recommended for fans of Ms. Windsor and fans of beautifully spun historical romances!

Final Verdict: Delightful, sensual, and poignant; Ms. Windsor’s writing is powerful in the way it moves the reader!

Rating = 4.25/5

Another brilliant story by Emily Windsor ❤️

Rhys Cadogan, the Duke of Aberdare, needs to find a wife…he also needs to find a governess! Shortly after securing a governess for his niece, we’re off to a house party where Rhys has his pick of duchess candidates. But he can’t stop thinking about the governess, Miss Isabelle Beaujeu.

From the very first chapter, Isabelle’s mysterious past had me hooked! Though she appears the plain, pragmatic governess, Isabelle is very much a romantic at heart. It becomes difficult to remain a proper governess when feeling inexplicably drawn to the Duke. She is a lovely character who has struggled, but has done well for herself. I really loved Isabelle.

Rhys is such an honorable, sweet & romantic man. He yearns for love & will not settle for less. It was nice to see a male character feel so strongly about love. “And ‘I’ shall become ‘We’” ❤️ He essentially had me dreamy-eyed & sighing throughout the book. Haha!

Isabelle & Rhys continue to feel & explore the pull between them. Meanwhile, someone causes trouble for Isabelle & more mystery unfolds. There is also a cast of secondary characters who are a hoot! The housekeeper & her tales, the butler’s pirate lineage, The Scandalous Mr. Cadwalader & the dramatics of Mari (Rhys’s niece) all had me laughing out loud!

This is such an incredibly romantic journey, intertwined with humor, intrigue, mystery & love. I don’t know how she does it, but every book Ms. Windsor writes is absolutely beautiful. You can easily visualize the characters, the setting; and FEEL what they feel. I cried, I laughed, I sighed, I smiled…and I didn’t want it to end. Once again, I eagerly await the next!

I received a complimentary ARC from the author. This is my voluntary and honest review.

England then Wales, Aug. 1816, onward. This had some
handsy kisses and a sex scene. Gave this 4 stars.

Rhys, a Welsh duke & his niece Mari were both grieving
for his twin/ her sire, who died 1 year prior in a boating
accident. He hired Isabelle who had French ancestry and
knew several languages as 15 YO Mari's governess. Learn-
ing Welsh created a challenge. His heir "Cousin" Hugh
offered help & comic relief.

Some characters were not as they seemed. Cousin Elen
ran the household and hosted a house party for 6 potential
brides for Rhys. Plus their male relatives. Some ladies
schemed or became catty.

Rhys charmed and defended Isabelle. And seemed attuned
to her thoughts/ concerns/ fears. He was a genuine romantic.
Isabelle deflected or gave clever responses to those who took
cheap shots at all French persons. My favorite scene? The
hero relaxed by swimming nude in the sea.

Once again Emily Windsor has delivered a wonderfully romantic Regency romance, with some wonderful characters that you’ll really love.

Isabelle is an independent woman who has become a very successful governess, all the while hiding a traumatic past. Rhys is a dark and brooding duke, who is responsible for the upbringing of his niece Mari. Always a somewhat quiet and studious person, he has become known as mean, moody & mysterious since his twin brother’s tragic death.

During a house party at Rhys’s estate in Wales, where he is hosting a number of ladies vying to become his duchess, the attraction between Isabelle and himself grows and grows until neither can deny it.

The route to their HEA (I assume that’s not a spoiler for anybody 😉) comes packed with ghoulish tales, personal jeopardy, nightmares, malicious deeds, plenty of witty banter, some wonderful poetry and a cast of characters you will love to see again (and you will see at least some in Emily’s next two planned books - hurray 😊).

Only one on-page love scene but with plenty of emotion and romance this is a book not to be missed ❤️

Miss Isabelle Beaujue is a governess with an excellent reputation.  Adding a Duke to her list of employers will only add to it.  Our heroine is self-sufficient but still carries the terrible memories of her escape from France.

Rhys Cadogan, the Duke of Aberdare has taken on the care of his niece after the death of his twin brother.  That death left him feeling shattered but he knows he must soon marry to ensure the Dukedom. His cousin the Lady Elen has the perfect plan to find him a worthy Welsh wife.

We really feel the wild beauty and mystery of the Welsh coast.

This is a fun filled but also emotional historical romance.  Our characters are all intelligent, lovable and just a bit vulnerable. I particularly loved the mischievous housekeeper. I also desperately want to read cousin Hugh's story.

Great fun.

Rich and Entertaining

What a wonderful book.
I’m so glad I picked this one up. The plot description didn’t do its contents justice. I have now found a new favourite author (and I am very picky).

This book had substance with the right amount of burn and steam. Just enough to keep you wanting and not too much to go overboard.

There was amazing attention to detail and to the supporting cast and world building. It felt like I had watched a 5 season show and got a real deep understanding and feel for this era and story.

Absolutely loved it. I don’t usually write reviews being a busy working mum, but this warranted the effort.

Amazing.

I fell in love with this book by 20%. There was a slight drag in the middle and sometimes heavy on the prose, but still 5 stars. I loved them as a couple. I also love when a couple work together to solve a problem and not having their insecurities be the main conflict. It was so so so romantic.

I have yet to be disappointed by Windsor's historical romances and I always have such a good time reading them. Windsor writes such interestingly humorous and witty characters and dialogue, incendiary chemistry and sexual tension, and wonderfully sweet romances! Isabelle and Rhys' story was a wonderful combination of all the above and I loved the added party/mystery element to it, plus Windsor really made the gothic vibes of this Welsh castle come so vividly to life! If you're a hopeless romantic, as I am, you will love the romantic natures of both Isabelle and Rhys (especially Rhys 😉). I would highly recommend it if you're looking for a short, well-written and easy-to-read historical romance!

Truly Excellent.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this intriguingly good book.
It had me enthralled from start to finish.
The main female character was delightful while being both strong and silently wounded by a long established personal misfortune. The main male character was remote and unapproachable but steadfastly honour and duty bound
The story employs an entertaining mix of languages.. English, French and Welsh. Not being familiar with the Welsh language I found it difficult to formulate the words and their meaning in my mind but very happily continued to follow the story once I established I didn’t need to worry myself about it.
The story was enjoyable and easy to follow but so enthralling that I had difficulty putting it down and read it within a day interspersing it with my home and family duties but it did infringe upon my sleep as each attempt to put it down resulted in …just one more chapter…. which continued for most of my night.
The main supporting characters contributed greatly to the story and I’m hoping to see them in future books.
I laughter, I cried, I got angry, I felt happy, I was fully invested, I loved it.
I pre-ordered this book on Amazon but was pleasantly surprised to be selected to receive a complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own and I shall re-visit this novel again in the future.

Simply superb. Characters so vivid they walk off the page and a well-paced story that is emotional and deeply engrossing and made even lovelier with touches of humor. I didn’t want to get to the end, but when I did I heaved a great sigh of satisfaction and knew that all the hearts involved were in safe hands. This is exactly what a romance novel should be.

Rating: 4.5/5

I absolutely loved reading this suspenseful, poignant, funny, and sensual romance that held me captive all through.

I love books with mystical, dark, atmospheric worlds, and this book checked all these boxes. The world building of this story is splendid and so realistic that I felt transported back in time!

You can literally visualise the atmospheric settings that had me shivering in suspense as goosebumps jumped on my skin. The settings are a highlight of this book and I adored the gothic vibes that spooked, scared, intrigued, and held me hooked!

I loved her simple, yet vivid narration that expertly uses poetry, and I adored the beautiful and heartfelt poems added in the story. These lyrical insertions added more depth to this story, and had me sighing in happiness.

The expert balance of suspense, mystery, romance, and emotional development is another highlight of this book.

I adored Isabelle and Rhys and swooned, giggled, and sighed in delight all through their romance.

Right from the start, the author managed to suck me in and I could not keep this book down until the very end. So, I suggest you don’t start reading this book at night or you will be pulling an all-nighter like me!

I loved the banter, the angst, the forbidden romance, and the easy lovability of this book.

All in all, I loved every second spent reading this fun, heartfelt, and suspenseful regency romance. So, if you are looking for a sexy, entertaining, swoon worthy, and thrilling romance with gothic vibes then this is the book for you.

Njkinny recommends this engrossing romance novel to all adult readers.
