I know nothing about racing. Ok, let me amend that — I watched 50% of a Formula One race once, so I’m basically a semi-pro, but still. But a friend of mine calls Ayrton Senna his childhood hero, so I was curious. And now I can say I’ve read a book about Senna, even if I’m quite a few times older than the intended audience of this book.

It’s meant for very young readers - future racing fans, I suppose, or more like the children of current fans who will surely hear Senna’s name said by parents once or twice or a few hundred times - and has simple text and adorable pictures. Its moral seems to be - work hard and be kind to people, the lessons that we can always use a refresher in.

Ayrton Senna seems like he was a guy full of personality, and a person who left quite a legacy behind, and so one of these days I may actually read a book about him appropriate for my chronological age. I suppose if I do, then I can call this my gateway book. So there’s that.

3 stars.

“When Ayrton was four years old, his father built him his first go-kart out of an old lawnmower. Soon, Ayrton was zooming around the streets of São Paulo in neighborhood races. . .”

Ayrton, astonishing his family at four years old

His family was more than astonished when the police thought their car was being driven by a ghost only to discover little Ayrton had taken it for a spin!

Police, returning young Ayrton and the car home

He finally found some races where he could drive as fast as he wanted.

Ayrton, competing in go-kart races

Then it was off to England and Europe to get in the big game. His rivalry with Alain Prost was legendary (and very unfriendly at the time, as I recall!) but they did become teammates.

Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, fierce rivals

He was known for having an intricate knowledge of his machinery and the circuits, which was a great help to his mechanics and pit crew. But he wasn’t known as a particularly caring individual. However, when a driver had a terrible crash during practice, Senna was the only driver who stopped instantly and went back to pull the driver out.

Ayrton Senna with Eric Comas, after saving his life

The picture book doesn’t mention his early death at 34 in a crash, but the written text under the photographs at the end gives more details. The pictures end with an uplifting thought.

Little Ayrton, in a dark stadium, looking at the bright night sky and dreaming

He is often considered the greatest driver of all. I’m sorry that the book didn’t add that Senna and Prost became close friends after Prost retired and before Senna died. It would have added to the story. You can read about it here (and many other places).
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/se...

I believe some details of his early racing are incorrect, but the overall effect is the same – he was obsessed with racing and winning from his earliest years and was competitive in the extreme.

There are countless families who love car racing in all forms, and I’m sure their kids would love this.

Thanks to #NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the preview copy from which I’ve copied a few illustrations.

"If we want to change something, we need to start with the children."
- Ayrton Senna

Well, I’m glad to see my own childhood hero make it into this series, next to people like David Attenborough, Stephen Hawking, Nelson Mandela and other inspirational figures.

The Little People, BIG DREAMS series is written for very young readers, and I have to say for me it seems to be more about owning the books about the people I admire than about actually reading them. Or at least that’s the impression I’m getting from this, my actual first read.

It’s a cute book. But to say that this is only scratching the surface is almost a stretch. The lesson to be taken away here seems to be to work hard to achieve your goals and overcome your weaknesses and to still be compassionate even in a tense environment. To illustrate this the book uses the incident during practice for the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, where Senna saved Erik Comas’ life, at least by Comas’ own account. Although it didn’t quite happen the way it is depicted here.

But it is a children’s book, so I guess that’s fine. Other stories, especially from Senna’s childhood, I’m not sure they happened at all. And even if they did, why include a story where little Ayrton is brought home by the police after he had taken his father’s car and driven it on the road? Even if he had actually done this, which I doubt, it’s certainly not a good example for children.

This book feels like a missed opportunity. Why not include his other dream, besides being Formula 1 world champion, that of helping children to fulfill their own dreams in life, by giving them the chance to have a proper education? The Instituto Ayrton Senna is his legacy. The gift to his country and its children, which he loved so dearly. It seems like an obvious choice for this book. Maybe it would have necessitated to deal with his fatal accident, because of the timing of it all. But maybe one could find a way to circumnavigate this in such a way to make it appropriate for young children? Well, it gets mentioned in the afterword, so there’s that. But I feel like there was potential to make this a great book instead of an okay one.

I’m still glad this book exists.

And every time the engines roar at the circuit and a new race is about to start, the crowds remember little Ayrton. The bold, bright kid loved by millions and missed by all, the greatest driver of all time.

Another addition to my favourite children's non-fiction series! This picture book series is honestly one of the greatest little series I've ever come across.

Ayrton Senna is another fabulous individual I had not heard of, so there was lots of learning so me! He was racing and driving around long before he had his license. So, like any good racer, he decided to head towards Formula One. Oh, and he loved safety in racing. That's respectable.

These books tend to teach me something new, which is a great thing for me as a reader. I love learning and I love picture books.

Four out of five stars.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This one here is about Ayrton Senna, a Brazilian boy who, driven by his big passion, managed to realize his dreams and became one of the most famous Formula One drivers ever. It was truly mesmerizing to see how much time and dedication he put into his dream and this could definitely be an example for everyone.

If you read my reviews, you know by now that I've read a number of these Little People, Big World picture books with my kids. This volume is about Brazilian Formula One racer Ayrton Senna. From the time when Ayrton was a small boy, he loved cars and driving. His parents got him his first go-kart at the age of 4 and from there it is all history. Ayrton went on to be a professional Formula One driver. The illustrations in this book are colorful and appealing and highlight various moments in Ayrton's life. There are additional materials at the end of the book including a timeline and photos.

My 6 year old enjoyed this one a lot since it was about cars and racing. And...Now he wants his own go-kart.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!

Such a great series for our little ones. Small in stature but enthusiastic about books and ready to dream big dreams.
Now here is a book that this old one wanted to read. Ayrton Senna is one of my heroes; I’m of an age to have witnessed his career and seen first hand his brilliance.

These books show how ambition and determination can overcome, poverty, misfortune or happenstance.

Motor Racing appears to many as a rich person’s world and perhaps this book is out of kilter with the other people this set of books recognises.

But Ayrton transcends such norms and assumptions. Although from a wealthy family he showed a desire for cars, initially go-karts from an early age. He made practice makes perfect a truth as he never took defeat badly, other than a means to learn more and spend more time practising.

But it is the love he had from others; their respect and appreciation that marks him out as a unique personality. His belief in God dovetailed into his desire to become the best and from his wealth he never forgot his country of birth and other children less fortunate than himself.

These books uplift the grown-ups and inspire our kids to be their best. I am also pleased with the adult information and the promotion of a more adult focused biography of this worthy champion.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This little book here tells the story of Ayrton Senna, one of the greatest Formula One racers. I already knew his story and I was happy to read again about him because he was really a legend and a very inspiring figure. I'm so glad children have the opportunity to discover about him and his achievements.

Born into a wealthy family in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Ayrton Senna would achieve much in his short but colourful life. He was an active child who was born to race cars. At aged four he sat behind the wheel of a vehicle and he was still young when he found himself in trouble with the law for a driving incident. Senna was a religious man and always believed that God would help him achieve his dreams. And so it was that he made his way to England to become one of the most successful and legendary Formula 1 drivers there has ever been. Not only was he a brilliant driver, he was a pioneer for the improvement of driver safety and for safer racing. Tragically his life ended when he was much too young; he died doing what he loved - he was driving a racing car.

I am too young to really remember what Senna achieved on the racetrack but from what I have read and seen, I do know he is comparable with the greatest sporting icons that have ever lived. He was fiercely competitive, an innovator in his sport and his legacy and work has continued in his death through the Ayrton Senna Institute.

This delightful read includes a short overview of Senna’s life with key facts and dates and a historical timeline featuring photographs. The book is pleasingly illustrated with bright and bold artwork and the story is told in short and simple sentences.

Perfect for children who aspire of becoming the next big thing in sport.

Ayrton Senna by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is another release in the Little People, Big Dreams series, which I have reviewed frequently on here. I just love these little books. They are always packed with facts about the person who they are writing about and full of colourful illustrations throughout.

This latest book called Ayrton Senna by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara will not disappoint.

"From the moment his father gave four-year-old Ayrton Senna a go-kart, he was in love with racing. Showing promise from an early age, Ayrton would go on to take the Formula One world by storm, winning championship after championship and becoming one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history. Off the track, he championed education for the underprivileged in Brazil, his home country. This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the superstar driver’s life."

I am so glad these books are being published and I highly recommend all of these books These Books are great for the class room for small children to learn about famous people the fun way.

'Ayrton Senna' by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Alex G. Griffiths is a biography of a person who liked to drive fast, and who is, tragically, no longer with us.

When he was only four, Ayrton Senna's father gave him a go-kart. There was no looking back. Ayrton liked to go fast and he liked to win. That led him to a career as a Formula One driver. He was also concerned with safety for himself and other drivers.

I'm not a fan of Formula One, so I was not familiar with Ayrton Senna or his accomplishments. As with other books in this series, there is a unique artist for each, and Alex G. Griffiths does a great job illustrating a young boy who liked to go fast.

I always enjoy and learn something from the titles in this excellent children’s series. This time, I became acquainted with Ayrton Senna, someone who was not familiar to me.

Ayrton Senna was a child who needed to be on the go and this took him to go karting. He was an amazing racer and eventually moved on to racing cars, moving from South America to England to achieve his dream.

Young readers can be inspired by Ayrton; not only did he win but he cared about others and the safety of his sport. He was another little person who achieved a big dream.

This is another good entry in a good series. It is illustrated in a cartoon like and appealing fashion that goes well with the text.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

A Young Boy Dreams of Becoming a Race Car Driver

I've only read a few, but I love the Little People, Big Dreams series. I could see it being so inspiring for young people, especially since it explores the lives of prominent people from all walks of life. This one is about a Brazilian race car driver. It depicts his love of cars and racing from a young age as well as shows different moments from his adult life, including big wins. Tragically, he died in a crash at not quite 35 years of age. After the picture book portion, the author shares photos of the real man and more details of his story.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

A success for this book in this series of quick little biographies. It is debatable whether he was, as it says, the greatest race driver ever – certainly his charitable work and legacy from his untimely death helped his legend. And this book, having to admit as it does that he was from privilege and wealth, does not quite pin down why the young readers of today should aspire and hope to have the same possibilities and successes as Senna did. So it's not the best entry to the series in showing a rags-to-riches tale of derring-do, overcoming the odds and winning despite everything, but it does do what it should for this age range.

This installment of the little people BIG DREAMS series is all about Ayrton Senna, a Brazilian racecourse driver who made a name for himself in the Formula One championship and who fought for better safety for the drivers after witnessing not only how a friend crashed but how only one person stopped to help - Aytron himself.

I have to admit that I never thought about that side of the competition when joining my father to watch a race.

I really liked that a sizeable chunk of this book was devoted to how Aytron grew up and showing his determination and passion at a young age, which is appropiate for the target audience.

The arc was provided by the publisher.

Review to be added to Amazon US and UK on 6th October 2020 - publication day!

I love the books in this series and always find something new in them.

This was a book that focused on a famous Formula One and sporting legend - Ayrton Senna - we get to read a little about his early life and his adventures in his quest to succeed.

He was a true inspiration and towards the end of his life he was one of the leads in trying to make the sport and motor racing safer. Tragically his life was cut short in an accident on the track and the world lost quite possibly the best Formula One driver ever.

Lovely images and another great addition to the series - 5 stars from me for this one

Lovely book about Ayrton Senna, one of the biggest sportsman in Brazil, loved by all. When Ayrton died in 1994, the whole country stopped in commotion, Brazilians and the world of Formula One have never forgotten him. In this book, you get to know a bit more about his life, and how his career started. You can see through the pictures and text the driving force that was Ayrton himself, with so much passion for what he did, and with a contagious personality. He was one of my childhood heroes and it was great to be able to read this book. I think that the children will love to read about him and they will certainly want to learn more.

Another absolutely lovely addition to this collection.

I really enjoy these books, despite being aimed at children. The illustrations are lovely and it is so nice to get to know about the worlds most well known people.

It was a shame that the book didn’t really expand on his career in formula 1, and his crash, but as a children’s book I appreciate why.

I definitely recommend and I can’t wait to read more books in this collection in the future.

This is the first title of this series I have read and it did not disappoint. A short overview of Senna's life as a racing driver and eventual formula 1 world champion. I am too young to have been aware of Senna's racing in real time, but his races would have most definitely been on in the background while I was in nappies. As I got older I became aware of who he was as a driver as my mam is a big F1 and Ferrari fan.

This book had gorgeous illustrations and got the essence of Senna as a person. I will be making sure to pick it up for my niece's Christmas!

My favorite series!

Now about Ayrton Sena, and at least I've heard of him. A racer. But that's it, since I'm not into racing world.

These books give me a glimpse of someone's life. What makes them known, their hardship, their passion, and how they overcome their obstacles. They really shown me that everybody face hardships, some more than others. But these people have the courage to beat the odds, a reminder that I can overcome mine.

Another wonderful addition to this series of very short picture book biographies of famous people that we may or may not have heard of.

In this case, since I know nothing about auto racing, I had no idea that this man existed, so it was interesting to see his life and what his passions were.

Not only do we read about his determination, but his work on making racing safer.
