I love this series so much, I’m happy to see how this story has come to an end but also sad that this is the end for these characters. This story was so sweet and very respectful in discussing hearing-impaired people. This series has expressed the importance of communicating and that when you try to help others by distancing yourself it won’t work. Fumino does a wonderful job at expressing emotion in all the characters. All of the characters are great and so well developed, and I loved that there were moments where we got to see more of the characters past. It really helped to understand these characters more in how they act and perceive the world. I absolutely adore this series, and I cannot recommend this series enough.
This is the fifth instalment in the ひだまりが聴こえる series.
Taichi attempts to make his new career his sole focus, after Kohei demands space between the two of them. Kohei continues with his studies. The thoughts from both, however, remained wrapped up in the other.
Much of this manga was focused on Taichi and Kohei apart and suffering. I was interested in their thoughts and feelings but also just as eager to witness them reunited.
I also enjoyed the extended focus on other side-characters here. It was interesting to gather an insight to other viewpoints on the events unfolding, how these different individuals viewed the world, and how they each coped with the struggles they had previously gone through.
These multiple perspectives illuminated the privileges many, including myself, have taken for granted. Everyday life is not as easy to navigate for many and this manga never lets the reader forget that. It proves itself far more than just a slow-burn and sweet bl story, in every volume.
"Whenever I would feel lonely or scared, just thinking about you calmed me down. I was always able to pull through because you were there for me. You would always save me. It's thanks to you that I was able to move on. I want you to always stay by my side smiling."
Like I said, relationships are complicated and sometimes it’s just hard to communicate your own feelings, fears and insecurities. Sometimes you just want to share your life with someone but it might not be as simple as that. And for someone whose always been hard on themselves, is not easy to understand that other people's feelings are their own responsability. We cannot assume to know what’s best for them.
This story was touching and respectful of hearing-impaired people but also it has reminded me that communication is the key to any kind of relationship. Our love for others can make us blind and so, we don’t see we can hurt the ones we love the most with our selfishness. Yet, at the same time, it reminded me that life is simple: you stick around those who feel like family, who make you feel wanted and loved, and you try to protect them, to give them hope, to make sure they will make the best of their lives.
Raising a child, taking care of others, talking to friends, learning new ways to express or even just sharing a few jokes –those simply things is what makes us human. Sure, we can make a lot of mistakes along the way but everything is temporary, even the bad moments. And we do need others in order to have some sense of security, so I think this volume put everything together and gave us a nice ending.
I cried my heart out from the beginning so I might not make much sense now but I just wanted you to know that I whole-heartedly recommend this story. It gave me so much and I'll never forget it.
The last volume had a lot of angst, which got a little frustrating because of the dreaded miscommunication trope. HOWEVER, believe me, I dislike miscommunications between two perfectly sane characters as much as the next reader but the way the author did it here does it for me:
Taichi has a troubled past, having grown up without any love from his parents and is raised by his grandpa, who he sometimes has a rocky relationship with. He grew up poor, and is also a little bit of a dummy. Very adorable and endearing, he is just walking sunshine really, but still a silly billy all the same.
Kohei was not born with a hearing disability, but a fever in childhood has caused his hearing to deteriorate rapidly. This has caused him to withdraw from society, and his self-regard plummets.
They are also very very young, dealing with self-identity, confidence, societal norms and the undoubted budding attraction and protectiveness over each other as their friendship deepens. You know what, I do understand the misunderstandings that can happen. Hell, I actually feel quite seen through some of the mental spirals that these boys go through.
This final volume of the I Hear the Sunspot: Limit series has thankfully, COMPLETELY saved them from their mental blackholes, and in the most beautiful way too! It does not happen overnight magically, like all things in reality, but they gradually understand themselves and each other better through advice from loved ones and friends, and as they slowly take baby steps in communicating and being honest with each other.
These boys are growing, and they're growing together. All the stars!!
Yassss!! Finally, a happy ending 🤗 I have no regret when buying this. I like the characters' personalities. And yah, the ending, I love how they being together. This manga book is also meaningful - I can know how deaf people feel when they're different from the normal, this is kinda like an animated film "A Silent Voice" since both deal with the topic of hearing impairment. However, where "A Silent Voice" deals with hearing impairment through a very singular lens—I Hear the Sunspot and its subsequent sequels seeks to explore disability from several different perspectives. And, yeah- another couple I have to ship, Taichi x Kohei 🥰👨❤️👨Sweet sweet

“There’s something to be said for havin’ someone to lean on. But that don’t always mean physically. It’s more about two souls feelin’ the same way. Keepin’ each other in mind. Knowin’ there’s someone out there who believes in you. Sometimes that knowledge itself is enough to help you carry on. So you tell me. Realizin’ you ain’t alone in the world... isn’t that the same thing as bein’ protected?”
That’s the only thing I have for why this was perfect. That one quote.
Kohei and Taichi finally managed to talk and it was everything! I love them and just want them to be happy! Really hope the last volume will be released in English soon, as I believe that volume will focus more on the romance (which I desperately need more of!).
i loved seeing that taichi and kohei finally communicated. took them long enough
AND RYU AND CHIBA I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. ryu is by far my favourite character and if we dont get more of him in future volumes i'll be so sad. the heart to heart he and chiba had tho?? LOVED IT SO MUCH. it was exactly what ryu needed to hear.
There was a lot of drama that could have easily been solved had they communicated better. It felt like the plot was going in circles. But I still like the main premise of this series so I'll still continue it.
PLEASE Kohei and Taichi are so freaking precious. This volume made me cry, but also it made me very happy. Super happy that the author mentioned more sequels. I definitely want more of these two and I'd love to read more from the other characters!! Like I want to see Maya and Taichi's film friend get together. And more Chiba and Ryu. There's so much more I'd love to read now that Taichi and Kohei have finally communicated and resolved their big thing. There's so many happy moments to look forward to.
j'aime l'amour. j'aime aimer l'amour. l'amour c'est beau, c'est romantique. c'est platonique. c'est fraternel. c'est beau. c'est poétique. ça provoque des larmes et dans quelques années, l'eau y en aura plus. bref.
this entire series was so wholesome and it brought me so much joy over these past few days. it gave me some much needed serotonin and i truly love everything about it!
Wrap up of the Limit arc. The author's afterward implies the series may continue, but it could end here satisfactorily.
The whole failure to communicate problem in fiction gets roasted on a regular basis, and rightly so. It's bad writing when buddy cop A and buddy cop B fail to compare notes and mention giant flashing clues to each other thereby failing to solve the crime until hours after the audience has. But while similar writing crimes do occur in relationship stories it's often the case that the failures to communicate are realistic.
I think most people probably know from personal experience that somethings just don't get said in a relationship because of insecurities or other emotional baggage. That sometimes it's easier to talk to an uninterested third party about something than to broach it with the person you really need to discuss it with.
There's a lot of that here. Taichi and Kohei eventually have the talk they need to have, but not until they've talked with others and been pushed a bit. It works for me.
That mysterious scar in volume 1? Vanished, never to be seen again. Did the artist reconsider? Was it just a very badly drawn shadow in otherwise ordinary case of someone's arm inexplicably being given a full panel? Who knows?
“but...but i can’t do anything.. i’ll never have what it takes to support him.” “you been sayin that since you got here. tell me, what’s it mean to you to protect someone? you gonna throw yourself in front of him like a shield? he’s a dummy sure but he ain’t a kid. you’re not gonna be next to him every second of every day. there’s somethin to be said for having someone to lean on. but that don’t always mean physically. it’s more about two souls feelin the same way. keeping each other in mind. knowing there’s someone out there who believes in you. sometimes that knowledge itself is enough to help you carry on. so you tell me. realizing you ain’t alone in the world - isn’t that the same thing as being protected?” 😭😭😭
i love this series so much 💗💗 the author did a wonderful job with the characters and i learned a lot about how deaf and hard of hearing people are treated and how they feel being in between worlds. i love kohei and taichi’s friendship to lovers relationship so much!! it was so beautiful and sweet! even though it was angsty at times, you understand why the characters are feeling the way they do. i love the way the author presents the deaf community/ having a disability with so much care and the issues they face. she really shows how taichi is such a perceptive character to others feelings! overall this series covered deeper topics in an extremely natural way and it was so well done! i loved that there were still light and funny moments too especially concerning taichi :) i really liked the addition of the side characters as well as the volumes progress. taichi’s friends have some funny moments, and i lovee the makoto shinkai reference of 'she and her cat' from maya and her film crush 💗 i really like the addition of maya and ryu and ryu’s brother because they show other perspectives too and this series just feels so real. there’s so much important commentary in this series shown through the characters, like kohei’s mom saying no to the documentary about her cooking when they tried to angle it to make her son’s disability a marketing ploy. he shouldn’t be defined by it like that! and when the model agent scout revoked his offer to kohei when he realized he had a hearing aid. the way taichi just turns all of those moments that he witnesses on their head and is angry on behalf of kohei starting all the way from vol 1 was really nice.
i just love kohei and taichi’s chrs so much, their love story is really lovely, and i’m so excited the author is continuing the series!!!
i can’t stop thinking about the line, “living with a disability is an experience in learning to cope with loneliness.” :(
that is so heartbreaking and haunting to me and this series really showed me a perspective i have never had to have before. i love taichi’s chr and how he’s an example of the way everyone should be, and i really appreciate all the perspectives the author provides through all the different characters, they’re all so important!! ryu really shows how being pitied for a disability is incredibly harmful and unnecessary.
“i’ve never once thought i might be better off if i could hear. and the fact that i can’t hear is part of that. i couldn’t change it even if i wanted to. so when... when am i gonna swallow my pride and use the words he taught me way back then?” 😭
the way kohei looks down on himself because he can’t quite fit in the hearing world, but then when he realizes all this time that means he’s looked down on the completely deaf world was really poignant. especially when he’s considering cochlear implants, which is a huge!!! decision and is a surgery that goes in your skull! and doesn’t even guarantee that you’ll be able to hear or hear over the static, not to consider how painful it would be. all to try and fit into an able bodied society. i love that he met ryu’s chr who starts to get pissed off by his mentality and shows him that the problem is kohei wouldn’t be doing the implants for himself. he’d be doing it for a society that views him as less than and that is so horrible and sad.
it’s all the microagressions that are shown so well in this series that have given me a completely new understanding of how hard and exhausting that would be. and instead of pitying someone for having a disability, we should bridge the gap. imagine if everyone just learned sign! then a whole entire group of people wouldn’t be excluded from so much of society. it makes me sad that it’s actually quite simple. and i love ryu’s brother as a character too and how he didn’t join the company sign because of ryu but because he just genuinely loves sign language and is genuinely so grateful ryu is the reason he learned about it at all. and his perspective was so interesting as well on just the practicality of sign language and if everyone knew this other way to communicate, like if you’re too far away from someone, etc.
i also thought it was interesting how she reversed it and had taichi be in a group of hard of hearing and deaf people and when the bullies were making fun of him through sign and he didn’t know what they were saying, how wrong it was, especially because taichi is the nicest and treats everyone the same and is so genuine and honest. i love that kohei got so mad and that ryu straight up punched the guy who was instigating everything. i thought it was very poignant,
“i saw what they said. how they were making fun of your friend in front of his face. it’s pathetic. i bet they deal with the same crap everyday in their own lives. but the moment the tables turn they’re the kings of their own pathetic little world. whatever they’re doing is okay because they’re in the majority. they don’t even see it as looking down on others. absolutely disgusting.”
also the heart to heart taichi’s grandpa had with kohei had me crying, honestly a lot of moments in this series had me crying, i love these characters so much.
“all you have to do is smile, and i can go on fighting forever. you’re that amazing. so i cant figure out why you’d ever put yourself down... don’t you dare belittle the one person i care most about in this world!” ♡♡♡♡♡♡ taichi!!!
the author did such a wonderful job with this topic and the bl romance was so beautiful and touching. there are just so many beautifully done and profound, raw moments in this series. overall i hear the sunspot is just on a whole other level for me. ♡♡♡
“if you’re the one speaking, you can darn well bet the words are gonna get through” xx

I don’t think spending 3/5 installments to clear up an unnecessary miscommunication would have ever ended with a satisfactory conclusion. I wanted to love this series, but it was really lacking in the relationship development department. I don’t understand why it’s so hyped. These kids went on like 4 dates over the course of like 2 years. Most of the series was about them being upset about their relationship and never talking about it.
After things fell apart last volume, the guys spend a lot of time moping here as events around them slowly conspire to push them to actually communicate with one another. A couple dumb coincidences will be forgiven for the sake of helping the story reach its predictable but satisfying conclusion.
But the saga is not over, as I have the first two volumes of the next story cycle on hand from the library.
