There are fireworks at the beach and then there are fireworks… at the beach. But with Urushi stuck in cram school in the aftermath of the big tournament, it turns out that the question is now when will Rin make her move? And it seems that ‘very soon’ is the answer.

More of the same, honestly, and that means me screaming at the page as people just bottle their feelings nonstop. Although this current state of affairs does get acknowledged in a very melancholic chapter where Ayumu and Urushi are both dying to see one another, but delete their more forward messages before sending them.

That chapter is nicely wistful, but it would land harder if it wasn’t emblematic of every other flipping volume of the series. It makes Rin’s rather normal forward push on Ayumu look like she’s powered by rocket fuel.

And, I give it this much, Ayumu and Rin are great together. From their shogi matches to the food challenge to the festival that closes out the volume, the two of them get along amazingly well and it’s just effortless fun.

Of course, that’s because Ayumu’s heart isn’t looking at it beyond friendship and there’s a looming encounter with Urushi in a yukata that suggests that Rin won’t be able to win because of her festival clothing choices. Which sounds about right for manga.

While I have not for a moment thought that Rin needed to be made into the No Chance Rival, she’s definitely a lot more fun than most of these that we get. So that’s something, not much of something, but something. She’s got spunk and I do not hate spunk in this series.

The rest of the volume is fine. The beach stuff is okay - it finally turns to the romantic for a brief second, but the walk to get there is leaden. I know that’s the nature of Yamamoto’s various manga series, but… yeah.

Probably the most amusing thing from the trip is the club huddle where they’re trying to psyche themselves up but end up stuck in their own thoughts about all the romantic misadventures that occurred during the training camp. That’s cute.

I do wish we’d gotten to see a bit more of the shogi tournament; it goes by way too fast for all that build-up. Then again, this isn’t trying to be Hikaru no Go either, so it’s probably better this way.

The other big development this volume is Takeru and Sakurako finally going on an official date and Takeru being even more tongue-tied than usual, although this ends up endearing him to Sakurako even more. It’s a cute little digression and nice to see them actually together now that they’re actually together.

3 stars - no big change, but none really needed. The pace is frustrating, but that’s this mangaka’s style and I had accepted that volumes ago. Fun, worth the time spent, but not the best of the series certainly.

fireworks leads to an actual CHEEK KISS which is finally some progress, albeit so small lol. the shogi tournament leads to some fun interactions between the group, especially when ayumu's support helps urushi find the conviction to win her match. sakurako and takeru go on their first date, which is adorably awkward and sweet. the texting convo between urushi and ayumu was quite adorable, as she studies for college entrance exams and he practices his shogi. the final chapters focus yet again on rin, the only good part being her talking about how she is not playing dirty to sabotage his shogi game/goal to get better to be able to beat and ask out urushi. otherwise, it's more focus on her fruitless struggle to get his attention, which takes away from our urushi/ayumu time and contributes to the super slow progress :')

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I really liked seeing that the Shogi Training Camp trip ended with everyone doing fireworks, and a few cute moments between Ayumu and Yaotome while doing so. Despite knowing that she’ll get rejected, I’m still rooting for Kagawa a bit more after her conversation with her friend (or classmate?). She’s just a sweetheart to me. Seeing Takeru and Sakurako go on their first date was also extremely adorable to watch play out and makes me wish that they got a bit more focus since their relationship is progressing faster than Ayumu and Yaotome’s crushing dynamic.
Overall I’m curious going into this next volume with our main trio now navigating a summer festival.

I ended up devouring the first 13 of this series over the course of a couple of weeks. I really enjoyed the relationship between the main characters. It's super sweet but adorable they just have this sweet romance. The art is beautiful and I found the whole came of shogi interesting. I will continue this series. I did a blanket review for all the books I've read so for. This is a high school romance that is slow burn so and I highly recommend.

The group wraps up Shogi Club Training Camp with a bang. Get it? Cause there's fireworks?
Then it's all about that first tournament! (Personally, I'm a little disappointed because the actual tournament happens in only one chapter, but that's cause this series isn't actually about shogi.)

And immediately back to the romance shenanigans with Sakurako and Takeru's first date, one-on-one shogi training, late night cram sessions, and firework festival drama.

This series has 17 volumes.

Some small developments, but with the way that final chapter ended I'm hoping there will be something big happening in the next volume
