After a number of volumes focusing on inside the walls and the human conspiracies being unmasked, we're back to where it really matters for me, taking on Titans. Backed up by some of the Military Police Group fighters, almost the entire Survey Corps seek to seal off Wall Maria and finally, maybe, get to that basement! What's in the way? Four abnormals combining with numerous 'normal' Titans! Turn it up, turn it up as Beast-Titan goes full beast-mode. So much going on, such well plotted conflict that makes up for the poor characterisations. Another Four Star, 8 out of 12 jam.

Wow! This was probably the most action packed and my favorite book yet. Some serious humanity on the brink type battles which is then topped with some much needed exposition that only leads to more questions of course!

10/5 emotionally charged stars.

“That’s not like you. If you’re content with leaving things unknown, how can we ever expect to defeat the titans? When will we ever know enough to face our enemies?”

Brutal, devastating, life-changing, are some of the words that come unbidden to my mind when I think about this section of the story. Chills run down my spine, my heart squeezes between an inch of itself, and awe feels every last space of my being all in a rush by the mere memories.

If there ever was a set of volumes to call a masterpiece, this is the one I would point out to.

From beginning to end, there's not a single moment where my brain wasn't being fried with information and with so much meaning and thought through it all. Even the quiet, still moments are filled with impact and meaning. There's no respite, there's no hiding, there's no salvation, we're right there with the characters through it all.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

“That’s absolutely right. It doesn’t make a single difference. No matter what dreams or hopes you may have, no matter what kind of blissful life you’ve led until now, what happens to your body when it gets crushed by a rock is the same. Everyone dies sooner or later. Does that mean all life is meaningless? Was the fact that you were ever born meaningless from the start? Would you say the same of your dead comrades? Were those soldiers’ lives meaningless? No, they weren’t! And our fight gives meaning to those soldiers’ lives! Those brave fallen men and women! Those poor fallen men and women! The only ones who can remember them are us, the living! So we will die here, and trust the meaning of our lives to the next generation! That is the sole way we can revel against this cruel world! My soldiers! Rage! My soldiers! Scream! MY SOLDIERS! FIGHT!”

Seeing the way that Isayama describes and portrayed war in these volumes was chilling, creepy, and crushing. He does not diminish its horror, and the honest view of both sides of the conflict, the familiar faces, the resonant themes make all the events a devastating, oppressive cloud hanging overhead.

It is nothing if not impressive and humbling to witness.

Witnessing the maturity and growth that the characters have had, putting their mettle to the test, and gaining a deeper understanding of them will never be tiresome; especially, with characters that feel so human and raw, and thus so easy to love and burrow deep into my heart.

“I have people I wish I could bring back, too. Hundreds of them. Ever since I joined the Survey Corps, every day has brought a new farewell. But, you understand, don’t you? Everyone you meet will be parted from you one day. I know it’s difficult to accept. It’s hard to stay sane, living like that. It’s painful. So painful. I know that. But, even so, we need to move forward.”

Even though the emotional impact is what first comes to mind when thinking about this set,

the twist that was revealed does not go unnoticed at all.

I am still reeling from it.

Such a deep twist, one that accomplishes what this one is doing, is not an easy thing to do, much less making it feel so right and substantiated by previous happenings and information as this one does.

What will it mean for the future? is the question permeating everything now, and I suspect, only time will tell.

“Who was in the wrong? Me? Or this world? It was probably both. I was foolish and ignorant, and the world was unfair and insane.”

This fucking arc, man.

These volumes are immaculate. Even though I know the later arcs are where the series is taken to a whole new level thematically (which is saying something because it's already fantastic), I feel like this is where the storytelling is at its best, or at least it's my favourite bit. It's just so simple and emotional and tragic, especially following the more uplifting previous arc. Armin and Erwin obviously play the stand-out roles here (this is their aristeiai, for sure), but literally every character gets their heroic moment, awful though most of those moments are. It's just so, so good.

I will say the anime is the peak way to experience this arc as it elevates it to an even higher level, squeezing every drop out of emotion out of you. (Personally I would recommend watching the anime first, not just for this arc but the series in general.) Regardless, this is exceptional writing and I can't believe how much was explored in just three volumes. 10 out of 10 from me.

Attack on Titan Omnibus 7 (Vol. 19-21) by Hajime Isayama is an absolute turning point in the series and an emotional gut-punch for fans who’ve been following the story. This omnibus collects volumes 19 through 21, and it’s packed with high-stakes battles, devastating losses, and long-awaited revelations that redefine everything you thought you knew about this world.

The main focus is the Survey Corps’ desperate attempt to retake Wall Maria and seal the gates of the Shiganshina District. This mission is do-or-die, and the tension is palpable from start to finish. Eren grapples with his growing powers as a Titan shifter, but the real highlight is the intense showdown between the Scouts and the Titans led by the Beast Titan, Armored Titan, and Colossal Titan. The strategic warfare here is some of the best in the series Erwin’s gamble with human lives is both chilling and heroic, and the stakes feel impossibly high.

The emotional core of these volumes comes from the sacrifices made during the battle. Without diving into spoiler territory, Erwin Smith’s arc hits like a freight train, showcasing his unrelenting ambition and the cost of leadership. Levi also gets his time to shine, with moments of raw fury and incredible skill that solidify why he’s one of the most beloved characters in the series. And then there’s the basement. Fans have been waiting for this since Volume 1, and the secrets hidden there are game-changing, revealing truths about the Titans, the world, and humanity’s place in it. It’s a massive payoff that makes the entire journey feel worth it.

The art is as gritty and intense as ever, with Hajime Isayama capturing both the chaos of battle and the emotional weight of the quieter moments. The larger omnibus format makes the action scenes even more impactful, especially the massive panels of Titans wreaking havoc. However, the 3-in-1 format can be a bit unwieldy to read at times it’s a chunky book, so maybe don’t try reading it one-handed.

If there’s any criticism, it’s that the pacing can feel relentless. These volumes are so packed with action and revelations that there’s little time to breathe. While that works for the story’s high-octane intensity, some readers might feel overwhelmed by the constant barrage of life-or-death moments. But honestly, that’s kind of Attack on Titan’s style it thrives on pushing you to the edge of your seat.

This omnibus is a must-read for Attack on Titan fans. It delivers huge story payoffs, unforgettable character moments, and some of the most intense action in the series. If you’ve been waiting to dive into the truth behind the Titans, this is where everything changes.

What I would probably say is the best battle in Attack on Titan. The second clash between Eren and Reiner, Erwin charge, Levi VS the Beast Titan and the return of the colossal titan. One downside I do have is the large number of nameless characters begin killed. Beside a few somewhat remarkable side characters most of the deaths are nameless characters. Erwin and Bertholdt are the only real deaths which would go onto effect the series. My favorite part however Is the colossal. during the battle the size and strength of the titan is made clear. It is also fitting that it is Eren that strikes down the colossal. I do find it really interesting since for a long time Bertholdt's colossal titan was kind of the face of the series. Bertholdt's colossal titan is what I would even say is the most rememberable titan within the series.

Bertholdt really stands out within this volume even though we won't be getting his backstory for a little bit. He begins to stand out within volume 11 with him becoming a far more active character within the story. Him becoming far calmer within the battle and accepting that this is a cruel world is great. He is oddly enough one of the few characters who I feel sad for when he passes away. This is also where Armin in my opinion begins to fall as a character. He becomes far more held back and stops being the main brains of the group. Maybe whoever controls the colossal titan is just a little held back. I do think it makes sense for Armin to be saved over Erwin. Erwin been chasing after one single dream with his foe being the titans and the shifters. Now that the walls Is reclaimed a new stage of the battle begins, one in which a fresh mind may be better. Hanji taking over as Commander makes sense, even though she is not as active as Erwin.

At the end of the volume, we do get a look into the basement and Grisha's past. We finally get a view of what lies beyond the wall. This is a very important moment in how it will shape the rest of the series.

BEST BOOK OF THE SERIES SO FAR!

Was so devastated when I thought Armin died 😭 I’m so happy he was saved he’s my fav character. The whole Armin VS Erwin for the titan injection was really interesting also; Erwin is a great soldier and leader but Armin helped the group in so many ways, like through the plan to take back wall Maria, etc, that I would’ve chosen Armin for practicality over Erwin especially considering Erwin isn’t really capable of combat since he lost his arm (in saying that he might get it back once he’s a titan? But also idk if he will if he didn’t have it prior to titan idk).

So confused about the whole Eldian, Zeke, blimps, civil war, basement situation but I’m sure it’ll be cleared up.

I finished this in one sitting and it’s probably my favorite volume so far. Erwin’s speech is enough to give a person chills and Levi is a badass. Also, lots of plot reveals and emotion. Such good stuff.

Holy cr** a lot happened in these three volumes. It feels like it's all finally coming together, but there's still like 13 volumes to go, so...

(I really prefer reading the omnibuses as it makes it easier to check back and make sure I'm following the action right, but my library doesn't seem to have any after this one, so it's back to the single volumes...)

This one was heavy on the military strategy, loss and story development. Like a real war story, there doesn't have to be happy endings.
