(Alternate cover edition of ASIN B09WZ8Q94W.)

His work as a dangerous spy is nothing compared to the antics of his bride...

The Countess of Huntley, Gabriella, aspires to help less fortunate women gain independence from unfortunate circumstances. But her impulsive nature triggers one scandal after another.

The Earl of Huntley’s new wife is as unpredictable as she is lovely. And when a woman of questionable character disappears, and a man of the peerage ends up on the wrong end of a blade, the trail leads directly to his wife.

Huntley will do all in his power to protect Gabriella from the blackguard who is not thrilled with her good works. Difficult, when she doesn't show the slightest care for her own ruin or... safety.

I received a free copy of this book in a giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely love when there's a major/main plot of a romance that isn't about the main couple falling in love. Sure, a book that's entirely about their relationship can keep my attention, but it's harder. An outside plot has more to keep my attention and reveals more about the main characters.

I can't say I was pulled in emotionally a whole lot to the mystery/action, but it wasn't bad. I think I would have liked to see more of Huntley as a spy because as it is, 95% of it appears like a worried husband trying to protect his wife and not as someone who is skilled and trained in problems like these.

I'm sorry to those who rely on these reviews because I can't say exactly why I didn't love this book. I liked it, but it also fell a little flat. Something about the writing did not feel accurate to the time period for me. I can admit this might all be in my head because I did not research when things felt off to me. However, certain phrases, ways of speaking, descriptions, just felt modern to me. I found myself thinking, "Did they really do this/ use this word back then?"

That problem and the others I had were so small that I don't know why my rating is so low (not that 3 is bad). Part of it is definitely the editing errors- there were at least 30 misspellings and incorrect punctuation, which really distracted me, but I'm sure will be fixed in future publications. I mean, when there's a big paragraph starting with inner dialogue but ending with real dialogue, but no quotation mark to show when the speaking begins, it doesn't help.

Something not mentioned in the description is that there are two other characters that are huuuge in this novel- Gabby's best friend and her brother are married (did that happen in a previous book?). Gabby's brother is also Huntley's best friend. The women work together in a project that puts them in danger and the men work together to keep them safe. I will say the women's friendship was probably my favorite part of Captivated By His Countess. They are spirited, brave, unique, have a wonderful friendship almost like sisters, and they are more than a bit naughty.

What do you get when a romance is so much more than a love story? Pure bliss! Captivated by His Countess is an unexpected story about one woman’s mission to help those less fortunate, a spy caught in the snare of marriage to a woman who confounds him, countless scandals, and falling in love with someone who is your spouse. Sounds like a rip-roaring good time, eh?

What drives this romance is quick-witted dialogue between Gabriella and Huntley. The banter between these two had me whipping through the pages. I love witty banter, especially in historical romance.

The world-building and descriptive narration work together in the book. The narration is immersive, so the reader’s attention is right with the characters. Every emotion, bit of clothing, food, setting, and more is detailed. It’s a feast for any historical romance reader. The world-building is realistic while also historically accurate. I could envision everything that was happening.

The characters are such fun to read. Their antics, actions, emotions are cleverly written so the reader can connect with them. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing life in this era through the eyes of Gabriella. She’s such a caring and impulsive heroine.

The romance is slow burn. These two have an instant attraction yet circumstances prevent them from falling in love at the beginning. Their love grows over time. I liked this approach to romance. It allowed me as the reader to root for this couple while laughing at their escapades.

This is my first book by this author and I can admit I absolutely adored every minute of it. Kathy L Wheeler writes unforgettable historical romance readers crave. Keep an eye on her for she’s a true gem to the romance community.

Awww...

A sweet, sweet story of a vivacious, impulsive young woman who is forced to marry a cynical, almost curmudgeonly earl who has seen too much of the less admirable side of human nature.. Naturally, she wins in the end.

The writing was so good, I almost hate to complain about the proofreading. It wasn't awful, just persistent sentences missing one or more words. Sometimes it left the sentence without meaning altogether. Anyone should have been able to catch the problem. I just couldn't give it 5 stars. I'd certainly recommend not only the tale but also the author. Thanks Ms. Wheeler, for a great read!

Loved this book, its was a fun read. James and Gabby are an adorable couple and I loved the independence Gabby has, focused on her cause, and James trying to figure out what she's up to.
