When a sudden storm traps goth chick Sunako and super-hot Kyohei in the basement, Sunako is ecstatic. Not because she can use the opportunity to get closer to such a cute guy, but because she can't wait to explore the deepest, dankest recesses of the mansion! Even when hunger sets in, and the chance for survival seems slim, Sunako is thrilled. If she can live a few minutes longer than Kyohei, she can finally see a real corpse! Will her dark dream come true?
This volume of The Wallflower includes special extras after the story!
Tomoko Hayakawa (はやかわ ともこ, Hayakawa Tomoyo) is a Japanese artist and writer, best known for her ongoing manga The Wallflower, which has spawned both an anime and a live action series.
I want to let people know that although this isn't the kindest review, I really do love this series! It's just that well... the last few volumes have just been repetitive. It's the same situation over & over again. "Ugly" Sunako freaks people out. Something happens & then Sunako is either rescued by the pretty boys or she does something that shows her inner beauty. The end of the chapter always has her in the usual SD pose to show how freakish she is in comparison to everyone else. We get it, Tomoko, we GET it! Sunako's not a normal girl & the whole point of the story is that looks are decieving & that we should also accept ourselves as who we are.
In this latest volume we have several different occurences. We have a flooding of the basement where Sunako was previously held captive which leads to a nice bonding moment with Kyohei. We also get a little insight into Yuki (easily the most underused character) which is nice. It's about time he got fleshed out a little. Even so, the stories just don't seem to really satisfy anymore. They're great little snacks, but you just want something juicy & satisfying to sink your teeth into... and that's been missing since the early volumes. I can only hope that future volumes has something actually happening rather than the wheel-spinning that is going on right now.
Would I recommend this? Sure, I guess. It's a bit dull at the moment, but hopefully it'll recapture the magic it had early on.
The Wallflower,Vol. 14 was another fun installment in the series.
Starting with a short “bonus” chapter titled Ranmaru’s Depressing Day. It was actually kind of funny - let’s just say an interaction with the Princess leads Ranmaru to make a strange comment to another woman. The first real chapter (mini-story) focuses on Yuki, his love life, and insecurities as he tries to become a “Man”. In the next chapter, the guys have a nutty plan to help turn Sunako into a Lady - which goes very awry in a way only this series can pull off! The following chapter follows Yuki as he deals with the fallout from a fight with a school friend - and we also get a look at the others, and their own friends. Point is - the theme of this chapter = Friendship.
The last chapter (58) of this volume was my favorite because we got some quality Kyohei and Sunako time! In this a string of circumstances lead the two to be trapped together during a storm - facing hypothermia, potential death, drowning and each other! Okay it was really fun and amusing (and true to character), there were also some really sweet moments (when the two weren’t fighting). I always enjoy watching these two together!
Finally, chapters about Yuki, the cutest character in The Wallflower. He is so innocent and nice, and with self-esteems issues sometimes, when he is comparing himself with the other guys. So he also has a girlfriend, only that she makes a tiny, tiny appearance.
Of course, my favorite chapter in this volume was 'Sweet Typhoon', where Sunako and Kyouhei stay at home, alone, and there is a storm. Somehow they are stuck outside in the rain (they were fighting again) and they can only get inside thru the basement. I like this one because they spend all the chapter together, and Sunako has a nose-bleed only once. She is finally getting used to his "brightness" and getting more comfortable around him and the other guys.
Also, at school, she is more friendly and nicer. Sure, she is still dark and gloomy, but not as it used to be. She is growing up, and also, some of her chibis are different... they are cuter and more beautiful.
The four stories of this volume descend in quality throughout, sadly. The first, giving Toyama a spotlight, is the best, while the last, a Typhoon trapping Kyohei and Sanako alone is the weakest. It's not that the underlying ideas are bad, but the execution doesn't quite follow-through. In the middle is a story about trying to make Sanako a lady by appealing to her gothic side works, okay. The other middle story, about a fight between Toyama and his friends, just doesn't really work.
Loved this series. I love reverse harem type series especially when the girl is considered to be 'plain.' Nakahara was a hilarious character and I loved all of her creepy ways.
It was similar in my mind to Boys Over Flowers. Same general concept and characters.
I'm thinking that I like the stories most which are the most plausible. Anytime we wind up in the basement of the house I seem to lose interest. Which is too bad because those stories have a certain amount of fun too. They're just not my favorites.
Overall series review (mostly) 4 Stars - so far, I’ve still got a few to go… Additional: Like most long running series there are some duff chapters/volumes
