The band took some shore leave, and helped their friend in his shop. On a visit to the bots, Bob and Nikki had to rescue some folks. Andre found a girlfriend, and then rescued her, a knight in shining hull metal. Come watch the crew deal with what their shepherd sends them.
I’m a house husband. I keep things together while my wonderful wife makes our living. I’ve worked as a machinist, short order cook, electronics assembly tech, and several other jobs. My hobbies include vehicle maintenance, (I’ve had the transmission out of my truck. Twice) free flight airplanes, electronics, and shooting. Of all of the BSR books, this is the best one yet. Maybe no less silly but as usual, it still invites the reader to suspend critique, put the rays bans on and go for a drive, metaphorically. Not serious, stuffy, science'y sci-fi, but still a nice heartwarming and relaxing ride. I like where I think Boyd is going with this and want the next installment yesterday! I can't wait to have some older grandkids to read these to. Again, not star ship troopers serious but good stuff for kids too. Giddee up partner write the next 10 books already!
still excellent, good slice of life book with great characters.
I enjoyed this series very much, as well as this book. This is another excellent one in the series. A slice of life adventure with Bob and Nikki. This time Nikki had more prominence in the books than she usually has, keep up this trend. The only caveat is that Steve Mason who is an explosive expert was not used in the last book or hardly seen in this book needs to be brought back since he was one of the original characters in the series. upgrading tech for BSR is beneficial such as giving the characters implants, as well as other communicative devices would be beneficial and other characters could be used to facilitate these situations. you can’t not love The wholesome attitude and family values of the book, it doesn’t matter what spectrum that you believe liberal conservative whatever everybody has certain family values and this book expound on those values eating at a family meal, talking to your children, loving your friends and companions, we need more of this in our literature. It’s OK if you want to read other books that have more violent themes those have there place to, but this series shines above others with his wholesome values. Yes it touches upon negative issues such as child molest station rape murder but it does it in a way that is not very gruesome. As long as the good guys win I will continue to read this series because it’s what we need today.
Another enjoyable volume in this now long-running series, but I have to say only one for the series fans like myself. We get all we enjoy from the series, the good old boy/girl humour, some action our hero Bob being his usual self, more barbeques and paintball.
This is also the downfall for the new reader, it's like walking into a room where the tv is showing a long-running soap. your reaction maybe this is interesting, but it's also likely to be who the hell is that character, what's going on, etc. As before if you're new to the series you need to start right at the beginning 20 plus books ago.
I will say it's worth it, I love this series, it's not great literature, but it's about good people, trying to do the right thing, ok in a sci-fi environment but why not. Once again there are no great plot developments, no huge moments of drama, our hero is even getting on with the US government but as I said enough of the usual for the fans.
Time out from all the hair raising adventures. Jerry has his characters setting the stage for further adventures. The Squach on Earth might move to Charlie's. Dingus is checking out a new and mysterious solar system. The US government might finally stop being stupid (NOT!) when it comes to BSR. The fleet Marines might take on backing up first responders. A Bot and an Organic fall in love? Snits gets lucky? These and many more possibilities are being hatched. Read book 24 to get in on the ground floor of future Bob and Nikki's adventures by author Jerry Boyd.
Like all the previous editions in this series, reading Don't Give Up The Shop is like an extended visit with old friends and catching up on their adventure since the last time. Great characters and interesting delemmas/ issues to be resolved. I can't fathom how difficult it is to keep a story going through 24 whole book but Mr. Boyd does it, in spades! This is, by far, my favorite series. I read it in it's entirety 4-5 times. I blew through this one in 2 days and am anxiously looking forward to number 25.
Ahhh.....no wonder the books are an editor's worst nightmare. He's writing them in one to 2 months.
I like the series but EVERY paragraph has mistakes. He's also losing track of the content of his earlier books. Like playing pool, bots used to sink TWO balls and then let the human shoot. It changed to 3 balls with no explanation. Reading the SAME jokes literally HUNDREDS of times is also getting VERY old. Maybe he wouldn't cut and paste so much if he spent more time writing them. Filler is NO thriller.
What can I say? These books are just a lot of fun. Once again the crew of Bob's Saucer Repair is rushing in to save the day, this time working with a local earth fire department, among many other adventures. I know this might sound like a pretty common thing for a high tech space ship crew to do, but the author succeeds in showing all sorts of interesting problems that could ensue. This is a true series, and as such, you really need to start at the beginning to get all the nuances, but it's a fun journey. Check them out.
Another winner, another whimper, because its all over till the next book comes out. This book is all based on earth, and even though they are getting along with the government, there's still plenty of excitement and mystery, with just a hint of romance. New friends are made, new people are saved, and old friends are helped. Our favorite Marine is up to his old tricks, taking care of business.
Huzzah! Huzzah! For the latest in the Bob and Nikki saga!
The madcap adventure continues! With dialog as filled with snappy reparte as 1940s moviespeak! The cultural references from different eras keep my mind engaged trying to get all the clues before "Bob" or one of the others let slip what it is about! (So far I get about 55% of the stuff on my own. The rest is smacking my forehead cause I missed it. Really enjoyable!) I look forward to the next episode. Thanx
Sometimes the dialog seems to drag a little bit , there is always quote something around the corner Quote. I have been with this series since the beginning, And have loved every book. I've set up for 4And I'll say it once again this Is sort of like a Dukes of Hazzard meet Star trek. When things get just a little too serious in the real world, I'll take 15 minutes off and escape to The universe of Bob. Super entertaining Bill Hodges
I definitely need more stars for this one!!! About, oh, maybe 999,995 more!
This was one VERY emotional and exciting Book! Excellently written and with an almost perfect ending. I would only caution not to try to put it down once you reach having read 75% of the book. Grab the tissues and hold on for a BEAUTIFUL ending that will put a smile on your face and let you sleep with happy dreams!
Such a GREAT book! And nice how Mr Murphy stayed away except from mountain view and the fire fighters ! It was also a nice touch to have some Amish in the story. Looking forward to the next book! Hope all is well with you and yours and your eye is healing well thank you Mr Boyd for giving me many hours of adventure!
If you are reading reviews at this point in the series, you are doing something wrong. It's a good relaxing read. It would be nice if there were chapters, and a little more of Bob's thoughts(it's all 3rd person kinda?) But it's still a good read with some entertainment.
Likable characters, friendly people! Able to have a good time. Feels Very Good to escape what we've all been through the past two years, even for just a few hours!
Amazingly clean text - word usage, spelling and punctuation. Nothing jarred me out of the story. I just want these books to be twice as long (or more).
Author includes too much previous content, in the interest of making this book able to serstand on its own. The series is far too complicated, to be able to pick things up adequately. Author simply needs to state that the series needs to be read in order, to be understood.
Another great book in one of the best series I've read in a long time.
This whole series is great, and Jerry doesn't disappoint in this instalment. I only wish he'd make them a bit longer. I mean it's great that I can read it in a few hours, but it would be nice to have a little more detail in a few places.
Looking for sci-fi with heart & humor? This is it! The characters are compelling and easy to get invested in, and the pop culture references are a great bit of trivia. The whole series is well worth the read and I'm always anxiously awaiting the next installment!
No there were no big story arcs or massive challenges to overcome. No big discoveries that added real drama. It was just a fun read that setup several potential storylines down the road. Despite the repetitive nature of a lot of the dialogue, it is still one of my favorite series to read and I was sad to see the end of this book just like all those before it.
I am a hardcore sci-fi fan. I like my stories gritty and...oh. I tried this story line on a whim. This is a great easy-going trip that will never end, I hope. Just a few friends and neighbors going on a joy ride they never expected. My only disappointment is Nikki isn't around enough in the later stories...
I read this in one sitting. The writing style was a bit loud to start start in the first book in the series, but now I think there is a new literary style called Boyd, or Stniz or single free narrative. Anyway I in joy this completely suspension of disbelief.
Well Jerry, you did it again. I'm very much enjoying your wonderful tales of BSR. Your characters are just people who go to work every day and come home to family. Work places and home may not be traditional, but they are sure interesting. Thanks for the wonderful reading pleasure, even if it gets dusty occasionally.
As ever at the end of a Bob and Nikki novel, I’m left with the warm fuzzies that you feel whenever you wrap up in your favorite cozy blanket on a late chilly night.
The characters and this imaginary universe have become yummy comfort food for me, and Mr. Boyd never fails to deliver. Read and enjoy!
I've been reading this series since the beginning, and watching Jerry mature as a writer has been fantastic. The characters, the stories, everything has gotten markedly better, and now my only complaint is that he writes to slowly! I can't wait for the next book. Great job, Jerry!
I don't know why there is a question about "what is it you don't like or didn't like" the question should be stricken from the list. There is no parts of any books in this series that that question could be asked. Thank you very very much!!! I know it might be much to ask ... But don't stop. It's needed.
The roster of characters is so rich there is a tapestry of plots woven into the story. So many new questions, but a lot of answers to balance them out. Don't hope to start at book 24 and think you'll get it all... go back and start at the beginning. The books read smoothly and you'll eventually catch up. It's worth it!
While in the Black. Checking out a planet that had been ravaged by the Commonwealth Navy many years prior to the BSR coming on the scene. Bob and company returns to Charlies planet to see Ables new baby. Then they return to Earth so the Bots can do another concert.
Engaging and hard to put down “Don’t Give Up the Shop” has a bit more of the mundane filler conversations than the earlier books and is, therefore, a bit less engaging than the earlier books in the series. Still a ripping good tale and well worth the time to read it.
I was about half way through this book on the June 28th when I had a heart attack. I stayed in the hospital until Sunday. This coming Wednesday I will have a pacemaker installed. I love all of these books. Too bad we don't have auto doc's. Maybe someday in the future. Jerry Boyd is one of my favorite writers Mike White USN Seabee retired.
Great book! I love everything about this story. Nice to get to see Bob and Nicki spend some time on Earth without having insane over the top drama. Of course there is some drama cause there is always is some when the BSR is involved. Plenty of fun as always too.
