It's a cookie catastrophe when Ben receives five conflicting fortunes and doesn't know which advice to follow! Another hilarious Cookie Chronicles adventure that middle grade readers who love Wimpy Kid and Dog Man will gobble up with gusto.
When Ben finds a lost wallet, he's determined to do the right thing instead of spending the money on sweets. But what is the right thing? Ben seeks the guidance of one fortune cookie after another--yet none of the fortunes make sense!
In his chaotic quest to track down the wallet's owner, Ben puzzles his way through five baffling fortunes in rapid succession while feuding with a vengeful librarian, battling a terrifying toilet, and gaining a new appreciation for ducks, cardamom, and his best friend, Janet.
From the husband-and-wife, author-and-illustrator duo that brought you Ben Yokoyama and the Cookie of Doom comes a tale about trusting your heart when your head can't make sense of things.
Matthew Swanson (and his wife Robbi Behr) are author and illustrator of the critically acclaimed Cookie Chronicles series, The Real McCoys trilogy, and the picture books Sunrise Summer, Babies Ruin Everything, and Everywhere, Wonder. When not advocating for local schools, giving talks on creative entrepreneurship, or running a summer salmon fishing operation on the Alaskan tundra, we live in an old barn on the Eastern Shore of Maryland—making books and raising our four kids.
Matthew and Robbi will spend the 2022-2023 school year crisscrossing the United States in a school bus/tiny home with our four kids, visiting underserved elementary schools in all 50 states (plus DC), and giving away 25,000 free hardcover books to students and teachers from low-income communities. In the fifth installment in this great series, Ben finds a wallet and with Janet’s help they attempt to find the owner. They get flustered by a teenage librarian and pocket full of fortune cookies!
A book so perfect I didn’t care it was in the middle of a series I haven’t read because once I laid eyes on that first illustrated simile, there was no going back.
A book so funny all other books retroactively offend me for making me believe the best a book could elicit from me was a mere polite chuckle and not a proper, full-throated guffaw.
This book feels like it was made for me, in so many ways that feel deeply personal. From the humor and drawing style, to the liberal library love and appreciation, to the most wholesome of friendships and hobbies, to the philosophical discussions throughout Ben’s quest for a philosophy of his own, every single aspect of this book struck a chord with me (except for that one spider drawing).
As many stars as there have been beats of my heart, because every single one now belongs wholeheartedly to this book.
Book 5 did not disappoint! Hilarious graphic novel/chapter book hybrid for ages 8-12; I loved this book. It is so funny, creative, fast-paced, full of heart, and has THE BEST SYNONYMS! This one is equally heartwarming and sweet. I love Ben, his parents, his best friend, and of course, Mrs. Ezra. I hugged this book when I finished it. There is a fantastical and funny author's/illustrator's "note" at the end, too. Don't skip it. It talks about some mistakes Robbi and Matthew made as youth, and how to come up with your own philosophy. I can't wait to read the next one. But I will have to.
This was a cute and super clever book that elementary students would really enjoy. I liked it a lot as an adult. The way it was written with pictures and dialogue boxes on the pages will make them like it even more.
We enjoyed all the chaos that fortune cookies bring. My kids love this series and when I told them there were only 2 books left they were really sad. We have also loved listening to the audiobook and the last part where the author and illustrator talk.
