Ruff... I mean, squawwkkkkk.
2 out of 5 rotten eggs for this one.
(Also, the bird didn't have the vampire fangs we see on the cover. It lied to us.)

Recycled story types are easier to spot at this late stage in Goosebumps history, if you've read most or many books from the various series prior to SlappyWorld. Night of the Squawker bears resemblance to It's Alive! It's Alive!, an earlier SlappyWorld entry, as well as the original classic Stay Out of the Basement. Is the similarity a positive or negative? Twelve-year-old Cooper Klavan and his eleven-year-old sister Anna are making their own zombie movie for a filmmaking competition, but their schedule is interrupted when their father takes them on a fishing trip. Cooper is frustrated at the delay, but it isn't so bad until Anna rescues a bird with a broken leg. She takes the injured fowl home to nurse it back to health, but Cooper has no way of knowing the ominous turn his life is about to make.

Cooper was weirded out by signs posted around the fishing lake warning of animal experiments, but even he dismisses the connection when Anna behaves bizarrely after her new pet bird—Oggie, she names him—bites her arm. Anna begins exhibiting birdlike traits and then denying it, but Cooper isn't the only witness; his friends also see the change in Anna. Some of what she does is just eccentric, but some is dangerous; when she ends up in the top branches of a towering tree or facing out her bedroom window high above ground, Cooper knows he can't play around. But can he convince his parents that Anna is becoming a bird?

Shelving the zombie project, Cooper secretly follows Anna around to video her episodes of birdlike conduct for a new sort of horror film. He's gearing up to show his parents the footage so they'll get Anna the help she needs, but can he afford to wait? Cooper suspects Anna's problem started when Oggie bit her. What if the bird strikes Cooper, or his parents? He has to expose Anna's crisis now..but Cooper may find the source of this real-life horror story to be more shocking than he would have allowed himself to guess.

Building within concept lines comparable to Stay Out of the Basement, Night of the Squawker has good energy at times. R.L. Stine can write gaslighting scenes as good as anyone's, raising the stakes as the main character's claims are rejected by the adults and he or she realizes the need to fix the problem on their own. Cooper's situation is stacked against him, but desperation is on his side. I might rate this book the full two stars; it has one pretty good twist, and is reasonably entertaining. I doubt I'll go back for a reread, but there are so many Goosebumps books, I won't need to.

I wanted to read Night Of The Squawker from the Slappy World series because it's close to Thanksgiving and this is one of the closest themed books I had.The story starts off with our main protagonist Coop running from a zombie with his friend Jermaine.Only this is just a movie that him and a few other friends are recording. They are interrupted by Coop's sister Anna,or Anna Banana as her dad calls her.She tells Coop that they are going on a fishing trip with their parents and their dad is waiting. After arguing about staying the kids end up going.Coop doesn't want to go though, because he hates camping.Anna really wants to be apart of Coopers movie and eventually complies. The dad recommends filming a documentary. On the trip Anna sneaks off and Coop hears a scream. He runs ro find her and sees that she's trying to take care of a stray bird with a hurt leg.Coop's parents are paleontologist and love to take care of animals as well as Anna. The bird ends up biting Anna but they take the bird home anyway. That night Coop can't sleep. He hears squawks and thumps. The next day they go to film the movie and Anna begins to peck at the ground like a bird.He takes her home and she is suddenly scared of her cat,and doesn't want eggs in the morning for breakfast. She even tries sitting on an egg left unattended. We also learn that Anna has given this bird the name of Oggie. They end up trying to record another video and Anna ends up in a tree when nobody is looking. One of Coops' friends,I think it's Marla ends up calling 911.The fire department shows up and Anna is on the ground fine.I think its here that Coop cha ges the direction of the movie hes filming and turns it into a mobie about Anna and her bird-like tendencies. One night Cooper sees Anna sneaks out and she starts putting things in a garbage bag.It turns out she is building a nest.Meanwile,Coop is recording everything Anna is doing but when Coop tries to tell his parents the pictures are deleted. Now before I give my rating for Night Of The Squawker keep in mind I am not insane.I actually had alot of fun with this book.I thought the whole mystery of what exactly is going on with Anna. The whole thing with her not remembering what was going on is actually kind of scary, especially wondering how she got up a tree and why she is leaving late at night.I don't know it just stuck with me.The ending I actually liked too,it reminded me alot of a certain Goosebumps book in the original series.I give Night Of The Squawker a four out of five stars.Agian I know this has no buisness being this high.

Review for “Night of the Squawker” by R. L. Stine

It’s the eighteenth book from the “Goosebumps SlappyWorld” series written by the best-selling author and master of horror and comedy, R. L. Stine. The story focuses on Cooper whose life turns upside down when his family takes in a strange injured bird that his little sister found in the woods during a fishing trip.
The author attracts the readers through his simple writing style that can be easily understood. His unique technique allows them to take part in the unfolding story, deciding the characters’ fate and the ending.
Cooper has a few similarities to Spencer from „Dude, that’s my ghost!” animated series since they both like to make horror movies, have an annoying and strong little sister and their parents either pay less attention to them or embarrass them. Denzel can be considered the voice of reason because he’s the first to realize that Anna’s condition is getting worse and he cares about her safety.
Anna is Cooper’s younger sister that loves animals so much that she takes them home to nurse them back to health. She wants to become a vet when she grows up. Unlike her older brother, who is an indoor person, she likes the great outdoors. She’s stubborn like the whole family.
Oggie, the big bird found in the woods by Anna is a mystery because it can be viewed as an experiment, a regular bird mutated by chemicals or toxic waste, a human turned into a bird or a human bird hybrid.
Unlike the Cryptkeeper from the “Tales from the Cryptkeeper” animated series that acts as a parent by teaching the viewers important lessons through each story he tells, Slappy doesn’t care about the characters’ fate. He introduces us into the story and often interrupts its course with his bragging. He mentions about his brother Sloppy the Dummy whose taste for things that are dirty make him look weird and smelly to others.
The readers will have a scary experience while finding friendship; thrills, fear, suspense, adventure, action, mystery, plot twist on each page of this frightastic novel. The parents’ indifference towards the changes in their daughter’s behavior and the father’s excitement of birds are clues of Mr. and Mrs. Klavan’s real intentions.
We will learn important lessons such as caring about others, the importance of spending time with our family and the consequences of selfishness.
Along with Edgar Allan Poe, Chris Grabenstein, James Patterson, Beatrice Masini, Sir Steve Stevenson, J. K. Rowling, Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian and many others, Mr. Stine is the author who will forever be in his readers’ hearts and who revolutionized literature through his unique style and the world which he created. The Stephen King of Children’s Literature and the Master of Goosebumps are the perfect names for the author.
I recommend this book to readers 12+ because there are scenes that are scary and can’t be understood by younger readers.

TLDR;
“Was I nervous and confused and a little scared about what was happening to her?
That’s one way to put it.”

This was a good book until the end. Anna is an annoying sister, obviously seen as an angel by their parents. Cooper wants to do other things but is dragged around by his parents and is seen constantly in the shadow of his little sister. He does care about her regardless, which is sweet. It was fun watching the evolution of Anna. The end just was a huge cop-out. All Stine needed to do was put a little more effort in instead of doing another cliché ending.

“In the middle of the night, every shadow, every soft sound, every slip of my shoes in the dirt was terrifying to me.”

DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS:
Cooper Klavan and his friends just want to film their zombie movie to submit to the film festival this year. Instead, his sister, Anna (11), interrupts their filming to make him come home and get ready for their fishing trip. “Dad’s fishing trips are sacred in [their] family. And [their] Dad is always dragging [them] on fishing trips to Deepwater Pond, deep in the woods.” Anna loves nature, she gets it from her parents. But Cooper would “rather be inside where it’s safe from snakes and insects, playing Minecraft with Denzel or writing horror scripts.” “If you ask [Cooper], the woods are only good for one thing—and that’s for making horror movies.” But Cooper’s parents are paleontologists, “[t]hey study animals that are around today and try to trace them back in history as far as they can.” They have a huge passion for birds in particular. Anna finds an injured bird in the forest and gets bit trying to help it. She “has a collection of sick and wounded animals in the garage that she tends to.” So naturally, she wants to bring it home. Cooper thinks the bird looks weird and mean. He sees a sign on a fence nearby saying “EXPERIMENTAL AREA DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS”, but of course no one sees it. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea but “[o]nce Anna got an idea in her head, there was no way to get it out.” So, the bird stays in her room and she names it Ogie.
Anna really wants to be in Cooper’s zombie movie, so after someone gets sick, he subs her in. As they’re prepping for the scene, they watch Anna “pecking at the ground like a bird.” Anna starts changing. Cooper begins filming Anna as she does weird things, the thinks this will be the film to win them the festival. His best friend, Denzel, thinks he should just tell their parents so they can get her the help she needs before it’s too late. But is it too late?

This was an interesting book. It kept the tension up throughout the whole book, instead of trying to throw all the scary stuff in at the very end only. Anna was an annoying little sister and I really wanted her to fly away, or get shoved out the window. I related easily to Cooper, I am not a huge outdoors type, I would rather be doing my own thing instead of being forced to fish or camp. The ending was a total cop-out. It was lame and was a disservice to the story. There were better ways this could have gone.

I did enjoy the world he built and there were lots of quotes I liked in this book:
“I admit it. This time I was wrong about that.
This fishing trip wasn’t boring at all.”

“We usually ended up eating our sandwiches in the light of the big kerosene camping lantern he always brings.”

“The sky had softened to gray. The sun looked like a dark red ball hanging above the other side of the pond. It made pink and purple ripples in the water.”

“’Open the window and let him fly out.’
Anna let out an angry cry. Mom shook her head at me. ‘Cooper, don’t be cruel. You know your sister likes to care for these animals.’”
I found this very ironic because Anna is eleven and it is kind of cruel to let a child steal all of these animals to play doctor. She has a “collection” in the garage but she never once tends to any other animal other than Ogie.

“’She’s just going through a phase,’ Dad said.
What does that mean?
Why do parents like to say that?
I mean what’s a phase anyway?

Finally to crack this new one open. On a Monday because that's how it worked. As usual I'll make it quick here since there will be the blog post coming in August. Anyway, I was interested in this one from the setup and it ended up being just Decent. Yeah, if you're not counting Slappy Beware, that makes two in a row.

This is mostly fine enough, as this kid Cooper has a sister Anna who is biten by a bird and starts becoming one. After Chicken Chicken and Lizard Of Oz, I was hoping to finally get that good body horror animal book and while it is the first to be kinda decent, it doesn't have much for body horror. Anna acts like a bird but that's about it, even with some of the situations there's no true body horror here.

It's a quick read as it moves along nicely and doesn't get too bogged down. This can make it feel rushed though, not quite letting it all sink in. Cooper is fine early on but gets crappy as he films his sister's whole thing just to make a movie, and doesn't use it as evidence for the parents until later.

Parents are eh mostly. There's repetition here but it's all mostly fine and nothing is too bad, until the twist. On paper it could have worked as there is a neat wrinkle to make it stand out but it is so abrupt/rushed in how it's done. It also basically makes the parents awful, which is just peachy.

It very much feels like Stine ran out of space here. It could have worked as our twist but is rushed, as well as being telegraphed. That left me mixed as it's mostly fine but with a weak ending. It flows well enough and has some fun situations, it mostly had some minor annoyances and lacked oomph., The ending happens though but I'll still have it as a decent. Like with Haunting with the Stars, it's hanging by a thread but the ending wasn't quite bad enough to totally sink it.

If you liked the other books I mentioned, you won't get as into this, especially if the ending burns you further. For me, it's passable and not all that terribly weak minus the ending. Don't expect me to defend it super hard given where it goes though, it's just simply fine.

Well that's another one done. Next one will be the end of SlappyWorld so here's hoping it ends on a decent note. For our reads, next will be on Thursday and I don't quite know what it is but I have idea. See ya then.

Copy provided by Young Adult Books Central

Cooper Klavan and his friend Denzel are trying to film a zombie movie in the woods near his house for entry in a film festival, but they are interrupted when Cooper's ornithologist parents want him to go on a fishing trip with them. Younger sister Anna is a bit annoying, and when she finds an large, odd bird near an experimental area, she wants to bring it home, even after it bites her. Once at home, Anna exhibits some odd symptoms; she's scared of her cat, pecks in the dirt, won't eat eggs, and sits around chirping! She even gets so high up in a tree that Cooper calls 911, only to have her be back on the ground by the time help arrives. Cooper decides to switch the theme of his movie to documenting his sister's odd behavior. The bird, whom she calls Oggie, escapes, but comes back, and Cooper becomes so alarmed when his sister collects twigs and leaves and builds a nest in her closet that he tells his parents what he has witnessed, but all of the evidence on his phone is erased. Oggie escapes, and Anna bites Cooper. Will he turn into a bird because of that, or is there something more evil going on in his household?

There is something about Stine's writing that turns even the silliest "scare" into something riveting. The way he highlights sibling relationships and involves the parents in the situations adds a close-to-home familial feel that heightens the fright factor. What is more frightening than seeing one's sister turning into a bird? Not being believed when one tells an adult! This works especially well since Anna is only usually vaguely annoying, and it was also nice to see that Cooper involves her in his movies and seems to have some real affection for her.

The other very effective strategy is the cliff hanger endings to every chapter. Stine is a master of heightening tension, then gently bringing the reader back down by making the beginning of the next chapter something benign. This also keeps readers turning past the required chapter, in an effort to find out what is happening next!

This mixture of scary and goofy is somewhat hard to find, but readers who have raced through the entire Slappy's World series can also look to Lubar's Weenies short stories or Brallier's dystopia Last Kids on Earth books.

The book that I will be reviewing is called Goosebumps night of the squawker by R.L. Stine. I think that the theme the author was trying to tell the reader was to always be cautious as things may not be as it seems.

The book that I read was called goosebumps. It was a horror book written by Rl Stine. The book takes place in a small town. It follows a kid named Cooper and his family. His family are animal lovers while he is kind of grossed out by them. When they go camping they find an unidentified injured bird. And Cooper’s sister Anna decides to take it home and care for it. But when they take it home the bird bites Anna but she says she's okay. Cooper goes with his friends to make a movie to turn into a contest but he and his friends start to notice that his sister is acting weird. Over the next week Cooper notices his sister is acting more and more like a bird and one day after being bit by the bird he wakes up and starts to act like one too. That's when his parents tell him that they put bird DNA into them so that they could become birds and live like them and that's the end of the story.

I think that Goosebumps Night of the Squawker is a decent book. I think that it has a good setting description and is a good book all throughout. But the twist at the end isn't really backed up and it feels like it is just thrown in there just to add more words. At the end of the book it is revealed that the parents injected their kids with bird DNA. while the rest of the book we as the reader thought that the sick bird was the cause of their strange actions. But the author just throws in that twist and it doesn't feel smooth. On the other hand the book had a good plot and good character development. I was hooked on throughout the book and I felt like I was in the book. All in all i think that this was an overall good book with a lot of good attributes to it.

Conclusion i think that people who want to read a short book will like this book. I also think that people who like scary books will also like this book. This book is full of scares and is not too long so it is perfect for someone like that. All in all I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars and recommend that you read.

Squawk! Stine fully shows up for this one, delivering an intricate plot filled with red herrings so you can imagine a dozen different twist endings—all except the real one, of course. Unlike some Goosebumps books which steer too far into comedy, this one is a perfect balance of shiver situations and laugh out loud absurdity. One scene involving a worm is particularly iconic.

It's nice to see Stine delivering another top-notch Goosebumps book. This is almost as good as the glory days, or at least nearly as good as Chicken Chicken (1997).

The idea of a “werebird” sounded fun enough to get me hooked from page one. We follow our main character [cooper] as he tries to “help” his sister [anna] because Anna has been bitten by this strange bird and is starting to act like a bird. I put “” around the word help because cooper records Anna being weird so he can make a movie out of it for a film festival. Which is was a nice change to see a character who is selfish. I actually had a ton of fun while reading it, I ended up reading it all in the same day in one sitting. In all I would recommend this book it is a goofy story that was overall a really fun read. 4/5 stars

Similar to Chicken Chicken in a lot of ways. The old title made it seem like a rip-off 😂

Yes, this book sucks. And wait till you read the ending. Boy that was a let down.

There were some decent things to this book, like the first two chapters and some of the bird related things. But that’s really it. Also the main character is kinda devilish. Don’t know if Iike him or not.

2.5/10 just terrible.

First of all, I am definitely not the target audience for this book (I’m 19) but this wasn’t scary, and I don’t think I would have found this at all scary at 10-12. Also, the dad is a douchebag and the family constantly argues the entire book. Also, what kind of parents experiment on their kids and turn them into birds with some kind of power juice? This book kinda sucked and I LOVED IT LMAO

Not good! But the ending was fun, albeit kinda shoehorned. This could have been handled with much more finesse. I have an inkling that Stine was told this series was coming to an end either right before or during the writing this book and that impacted his work here.

The ending I didn't really like cause it kinda ruined the point of the book I mean the bird is evil and bites Anna then she starts acting strange but the ending changed that but other than that I loved it! I'm gonna rate it 4 stars!❤🕊

This one reminded me a bit of Stay Out Of The basement. I thought the MC and his little sister had a good dynamic going that kept things interesting. The ending did feel a bit rushed though.

A good read for Middle grade readers looking for more of a goofy / scary book.
