A Mage's Influence #4

Forests of Grandeur and Malice

Rate this book
With the borders breaking down, and their friends in the settlement in deadly danger, Cadence and Airlie need to act fast. Instead they’re caught up in politics where torn allegiances threaten their freedom.

But the greatest danger lies across the border in the fallen kingdom. The threat of the General still looms large, and the wild power is far beyond the control of any one person.

After a lifetime of deception, the sisters are still discovering their power and heritage. Airlie wants to let go of her final secret, but she worries it could pave the path to further destruction, and she fears its revelation might mean losing Cadence for good. But it also might offer their only hope of salvation. If the sisters have any chance of saving their world, they must do it together.

Melanie Cellier grew up on a staple diet of books, books and more books. And although she got older, she never stopped loving children’s and young adult novels.
She always wanted to write one herself, but it took three careers and three different continents before she actually managed it.

She now feels incredibly fortunate to spend her time writing from her home in Adelaide, Australia where she keeps an eye out for koalas in her backyard. Her staple diet hasn’t changed much, although she’s added choc mint Rooibos tea and Chicken Crimpies to the list.

She writes young adult fantasy including her Spoken Mage series, and her Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series which are made up of linked stand-alone stories that retell classic fairy tales.

The series conclusion "Forests of Grandeur and Malice,"didn't disappoint.
However, my preference leaned toward Cadence's perspective as the central POV, while Airlie's viewpoint occasionally felt intrusive and overshadowed Cadence's narrative, sometimes hindering the story's progression.
Despite its predictability, the book was an enjoyable read. 3.5 stars.

I LOVE everything this author has ever written, and this whole series has been amazing from start to finish! I binged this finale in a day, and I was so happy to see Zeke, Cadence, Evermund, and Airlie get their happy ending!

Very enjoyable finale to a predictable (if you’ve read previous series from this author) but fun series. The overall storyline is what shines in this book. The main characters were actually a bit of the weak point for me. Cadence is supposed to have this super all-powerful power but every single time danger hits, she freezes. We never actually see that huge power! GAH! It’s annoying! And Airlie just continues with her whiny, “poor me” thought processes.

I guess it’s the overall ensemble that keeps the story at the high level of enjoyment while reading - because all the secondary characters working together with the two sisters really do keep things interesting and readable. And, that ending was just perfect! It wrapped everything up in a believable but creative and sigh-worthy way!

Contains: some fighting. This series isn’t all that memorable. Looking back I think the third book was kinda pointless. This one had the final battle a little too early and had left too much time for the wrap up. I kinda got bored at the end. I still don’t care for Zeke and Cadence. They’re too young and he’s practically the first guy she ever meets. The love stories all fell flat, the characters were predictable, and the resolution was too easy.

I’m pleased with the ending of this series. 👏🏻 I’m also pumped that there’s more in this world via other series. Love that we end with two queens 👸 👸 Read this if you like fantasy, adventure, strong heroines, elemental magic, and clean romance.

Basically…

Possible content warnings: fighting (light though I think more than in previous books) and there’s more talk of and allusions to death. I couldn’t decide if I would rate this book 3 stars or 4. If I had written my review immediately after I’d finished, it would have been 4 stars no question. But a week later, I can remember why I liked it, but my feelings have… tempered.
I thought the action was well-paced, the few fight scenes were compelling, and I was a fairly captive audience the whole way through. There were a few twists that I either didn’t expect or didn’t know quite how they’d be presented. I still found Cadence to be more compelling that Airlie, but I nevertheless enjoyed the story from both girls’ perspective.
I can’t see myself rereading the series, but I am interested in reading more in this world.

Book 4 of the “A Mage’s Influence” series did not disappoint. Continuing the dual POV of the last two books, Cadence and Airlie travel among Tartora and Calista, saving people and each other with the help of friends and love interests. They must thwart the General from claiming Calista and its potentially stored power, and place the rightful heir on its throne. If they can figure out how to rid their world of the wild power destroying it.

I was surprised twice in Forests of Grandeur and Malice, not an easy thing in a saturated royalty sub-genre. These twists were not obvious or predicted, but gave me aha! moments from throughout the series. Five stars! I look forward to reading more in this world about these characters.

If sappy happy endings and resolutions with bows on top aren't your style, don't read Melanie Cellier. She embraces it, and I love it. And just because the result is happily ever after, it doesn't mean the journey isn't interesting! I really liked where she took the story. It was a fun adventure that was hard to put down. Definitely would recommend!

This whole series was a struggle to get through, but was interesting enough that I kept reading. And the author’s writing is good, easy to follow, and flows well. So there’s that. I just didn’t like Cadence or Zeke, and they are such a huge part of the series. I love Airlie and Evermund though. I thought the magic in the series was neat, and well explained. I’ll prolly never reread this series, but I would read another installment of this book…especially because I want to see Nik get his happy ending!

Content: clean, no swearing, some kissing

Stellar

Forests of Grandeur and Malice was the perfect ending to A Mage’s Influence series. Cellier is a master storyteller and her fantasy series are my favorite. Also, I hope this series becomes an audiobook because her others are pretty amazing.
My one remaining question is: what will happen to Nik? I’m hopeful that there could be another series to continue in the rebuilding of the three kingdoms…

I struggled with this series in a couple places, book 2 and 4 specifically. The story line occasionally skipped details such as the rescue team oblivious to the fact Cadence used wild power when they believed she was not yet activated (book 2) and the sudden revealing that everyone had increased strength (book 4). It was like the author saying, "Oh, did I forget to mention that..."? Yes, Melanie, you did forget.

Series endings are always dicey. This was… repetitive, too easy, and way too cheesey. Dunno, it missed a bit of the spark and uniqueness of some of the earlier ones.

I loved how everything wrapped up nicely. I only hope Nik will get a happy ending in his own series possibly!

Forests of Grandeur and Malice is the fourth, and final, novel in the A Mage’s Influence series. This story is a continuation of the previous novels and continues with the dual POV of Cadence and Airlie. The two sisters must work together to save the kingdom as the threat of the General looms. The two sisters and their love interests, Zeke and Evermund, along with a few other minor characters travel to the kingdom of Calista. Airlie’s point of view takes up more page time than Cadence, which I was torn with as I liked both characters in different ways and felt they needed equal page time for more readers to connect with each. I can see some readers preferring Cadence and others preferring Airlie. As this is the final novel in the series, I am very glad to see everything wrapped up, but I do think there needed to be a few more details to make it feel complete.

The relationship between the two sisters was well-written as it wasn’t perfect, and I enjoyed how the author illustrated the ups and downs. This added some realism into the story even though there was still the fictional everything works out by the end how the author intends. The story may put together at the end, or they may be separated, but it all makes sense for the series. There was great character development in the story, and I liked how both Cadence and Airlie’s stories progressed from the start of the series to the end. Everything was fairly wrapped up by the end, which may or may not work for every reader. I think having everything more wrapped up worked for this series, but other may prefer something different. There was not as much tension in this story and high stakes compared to a lot of other series, but it was still present. Since I have read a lot of other novels by the author, the choices made in this series made a lot of sense. Overall, this was a nice end to the series and I look forward to reading more from the author in the future.

I love this authors audiobooks they make really exciting easy listening I've listened to the entire series (same with her other magic series) in only a week. Her magic systems and politics and world building are always really unique and interesting- this was the same! Everything she writes regarding magic is unique in a way I have not read before. I will say though, with this particular series I wasn't that invested in the main romance. And there were a lot of things I was invested in that never got resolved. Other than the sisters, a lot of the characters feel static and never change. Even to the point the same descriptive words are used to describe them the entire book. For example Nik's whole thing. I was kind of invested in it (I thought his unique situation with his sister and placement in the monarchy was super interesting) and I was hoping for some character growth after a certain point in the last book and just never got it. I understand that not every character needs character growth, but it feels unsatisfactory when there's a good setup for it and it never happens. Either way, I enjoyed most of the characters and even with my disinterest in the romance the story was still exciting and unique and fun to listen to.

I enjoyed the final book in the series, A Mage's Influence, but not as much as the others. It is an engaging fantasy book, and it adequately wraps up the series. However, it felt to me like the conclusion was a bit more rushed. I expected .

Yes, it was a bit rushed and overly simple of a finale, and there were some plot holes. But, it still was engaging enough for a light read. And although most of the loose threads were tied up nicely, there were a few left hanging that would lead nicely into a follow-up book or series. I'd be interested to see where Cellier goes from there.

I can't believe this amazing series has come to an end. And this book was undoubtedly the best book of the series. I absolutely loved it!

This book served literally everything. Escape plans, tensions, secrets revealed, high emotions, celebrations, romance, adventure journey, monster encounter, powerful villains, final battle, anticipation and lastly a happily ever after. I feel so content right now. This series was beautiful. Without any ugly or painful twists, simply enjoying the amusements of a fantasy world.

The one thing that was annoying to me was Airle's chapters. I'm happy for her and Evemund. But I was dying to read Candace's Pov. The occasional cute moments between Zeke and Candace was something to look forward to. I also love how everyone had a contribution in the mission. Even Nik! I would have preferred a simple life for Airle rather than becoming the Queen. But it’s fine as long as they are all happy.

Lastly, I had to mention the last scene because it was beautiful and the perfect ending of a series. I'm going to adore both "The Hidden Mage" and "A Mage's Influence" series. Thank you Melanie Cellier! I'm bound to hunt for more of her books!

The series started with mystery and questions, and the fact that the first book didn't reveal it all was one of the greatest strengths.

However, by book 4, there is very little that remains unknown - except for the big question: how will they save the world from the wild power?

Unfortunately, this question isn't as mysterious, and for those paying attention in book three would already have guessed how it could be possible. It felt like the author just wanted to finish the series at this point and tie up all the loose ends as quickly as possible. Starting in the 3rd book, many things that were revealed felt far too 'convenient' - almost as though we were pushing hard for a happy ending for everyone, and you feel it in the pages. There were no situations that had me worried about the outcome or where I felt that any character was in any real danger, although by the end of book 3, this is expected.

Overall, the book isn't bad, and after three other books, I wanted to see how it all played out, but it was a rather disappointing end to a series that started with a lot of great potential.

A satisfying conclusion to the series. Overall, it’s not my favorite work by Cellier but it was engaging enough that I read every book in the series and wanted to find out what happened and how things ended.

This book, Cadence and Zeke make their way into the kingdom of Callista to take on wild magic at its source. They’re accompanied by Airlie and Evermund, of course, and a few other characters from previous books. Again, this goes between Cadence and Airlie’s perspectives so the reader really has a full picture of what’s going on (which was a much needed change from the first book, where I was as lost as Cadence!)

The middle of this book could have used a little more action, I think. Loved the castle and the return of a few other characters. Loved the solution to wild magic and the conclusion. I still want a spin off book/series focusing on Gia. Overall, very satisfied with the book and series, and would recommend.

A truly outstanding finale to what I feel is Melanie Cellier's most perfectly realized fantasy world and story. I honestly cannot find any flaw. After listening to the first two on Audible, I backtracked and started anew on Kindle, and I feel there is zero confusion among the two character points of view and that the nuanced characters and writing comes across much more beautifully and meaningfully. Character development from the top-down is rich and believable (I even feel I know quite well the raider-healer, for instance, and mentally paired her off with a key cranky character in the future). The plotting is accomplished with finesse. The history and magic system of the world is thought out exquisitely. I am sure the author discarded quite a lot of her backstory in the final version, and I am certain that contributes to the strength of this story. Really excellent series. Highly recommended!

Very good conclusion, with room for adding on later, if desired

A Very surprising ending, in so many ways, but rather predictable in others. I enjoyed this book almost as much as the other three, and was glad that it wasn't so engrossing that I couldn't put it down.Afterall, a girl does have to attend to chores and daily living, not to mention sleep, at least once in a while. :)
Lots of surprises and adventure along the was as Zeke and Cadence, along with the rest of their friends, and 1 reluctant "friend", set out to restore Calista and defeat the Wild Power that has now reached into Tartona, heading for the Capital City!! Like I said before, this series is Melanie Cellier at her very best. I am looking forward to more series in this kingdom. I highly recommend this book/series! ENJOY!!

I've read Melanie Cellier before, and her books are right up my alley- fantasy, stakes magic, etc. She's a good writer and very talented at making her world-building and magic systems unique. I loved all of the characters in the book, but sometimes it was hard to distinguish who was narrating between Airlie and Cadence because their voices were similar. They both had fantastic character development but I felt like their stories wrapped up too storybook-perfect. The final battle felt over-hyped for the easy solution that the author went with. There was no sacrifice at all- no one except the main villain died or was seriously injured and couldn't be healed. Everything slotted into place like a puzzle, and there wasn't any major damage to, well, anything. I wish the ending had been a little more realistic, but overall this book was an engaging read and I'd recommend it for YA readers.

I'm not sure why, but I struggled to get into this story. I just couldn't relate to the characters as I started reading it. It was also told more from Arlie's POV than Cadence's, and I like the Cadence character better than the Arlie character...

Our troupe again faces struggles and trials but also learns more about their powers and just how much they are capable of, Cadence especially. They also find that when they work together they are formidable! We finally reach the place where they can deal with the wild power and of course, nothing is easy and an old nemesis shows up to defeat their efforts!

It took about 1/3 of the book but I finally got into it and really enjoyed it after that. This is a clean read. (No sex, no bad language)

This book—like any final book in a truely beloved series—was bittersweet.

On the one hand, I am more than thrilled that the sisters managed to find a resolution to the various conflicts in the series and finally get the happy endings they so dearly deserve. But on the other hand, its surprisingly hard to say goodbye to these remarkable characters.

Airlie was my favourite of the sisters—loyal, confident, and yet, afraid that she could never quite be enough. There's just something about her I couldn't help but relate to. Cadence was like a ray of sunshine—bright and pure and so utterly unique.

I love all of Melanie's work, but this series is definitely the best of all and I hope she returns to this world someday.

4.5 stars for me! I really enjoyed the conclusion of this series! My first Melanie Cellier series, but definitely not my last!

Her writing and pacing is just right to constantly keep you interested in the story and invested in the characters.

I really like Airlie and Cadence’s sister relationship, especially because I also have an older sister so I could relate to Cadence lol.

I also really loved how much adventure was in this series as a whole, but especially in this book.

One quibble I have is whenever there’s a fight from Cadence’s POV, she’s explaining everything happening, but she’s doing very little! It felt like she was moving in slow motion while everything else was happening in normal speed and it was so frustrating lol!

I thought the action was well-paced, the few fight scenes were compelling, the author’s writing is good and easy to follow, and this one, like the rest of the series, flowed well. I liked it enough that I was a fairly captive audience the all of the way through and there were a few twists that I didn’t expect. I wanted to know how the story ended.
Overall, I found Cadence to be a more compelling that MC than her sister Airlie, but I enjoyed reading the story from the alternating perspective of each sister. I was so happy to see Zeke, Cadence, Evermund, and Airlie got their happy endings.
I can't pin it down, but this series was just okay, I didn't love it.

Love and Hate

I loved the whole series. It was suspenseful in that you never knew what turn the story was going to take. I fell in love with the characters and their banter.
I hated having to wait for books to be completed so I could just binge my way through them! I guess that is what I get for following a favorite author so carefully!🙃
This was a wonderful serious and yet lighthearted look at mages in a clean writing style that I would have no hesitancy sharing with my daughter like we used to do when she was younger.
Definitely a wonderful read.

Broken to Fix

Cadence, Zeke, Evermund and Airlie embark on a quest that seems insurmountable. The magic is broken. They must find a way to fix the magic before it consumes everyone and everything. Who knew chopping down some trees would cause such a deadly mess? Gia, Nick and Renley get drug along for the dangerous adventure. The Triumvirate is too manipulative, as is the Queen of the Nomads and the King of Tartoren. Though when push came to shove everyone agreed only Zeke and Cadence can bring about the solution threatening every kingdom.

I flew through this book! I fun ending to this series. I have to say I was surprised to see that both sisters ended up being queens. I nice happy ending for all.

But despite that I do think the author did do a good job of a realistic sister relationship. They love each other, but also get jealous, get upset with and musical each other at times. And they both have very deep connections from their share past that no one else can fully understand.

Looking forward to the next series in this world!
