PTSD Radio #1-2

PTSD Radio 1 (Vol. 1-2)

Rate this book
Carried into modern Japan from a forgotten past, the being known as Ogushi haunts and tortures humans of all kinds. Little is know about Ogushi's curse, except that it resides in an unexpected place: human hair.

Like Junji Ito's Uzumaki, PTSD Radio takes something everyday and weaves it into a series of chilling, cryptic, twisted, repellant, and alluring manga stories that become more than what they first seem.

The hit digital series finally comes to print in three 400-page compilations!

An unseen hand tugs at your braid. You find an old box with only a tangled mess of dark hair inside. You open a door in your home only to witness a river of curls slinking away, an ominous lump at its heart.

Ogushi preys on the unprepared. Before it's too late, tune into PTSD Radio.

These episodes and more await in this acclaimed horror series, coming to print after a successful digital run in double-length omnibus editions featuring sickeningly-textured covers. From the gleefully-twisted mind that created Fuan no Tane, PTSD Radio is a necessity for fans of the masters of manga scares such as Junji Ito, Kazuo Umezz, Shintaro Kago, and Suehiro Maruo.

What the f*ck is this!!!!!!! This is the only manga I’ve ever read that genuinely scared me. I kept thinking about it before I went to bed that night, the visuals in this manga really stuck with me. I’d highly recommend this for horror fans, it’s so freaking creepy!! I can’t wait to read more.

Here’s the vlog where I read it: https://youtu.be/E4cPWGHu4E8?si=WiM9q...

I loved this horror manga. Dare I make the comparison, but this manga reminded me quite of a bit of Junji Ito work in terms of artwork and themes.

Written in a series of short fragments, the narrative has a broken, disjointed style that worked well to create an unsettling story. From a storytelling perspective, the narrative could be a little too fragmented but I could give up that for a creepy atmosphere.

I loved the story ideas surrounding body horror and dark imagery. The hair and the dark shadows have stayed particularly vivid in my mind.

Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

my hunt for a similar manga to Junji Ito's work is finallyyyy over 'cause this is the closest thing I've come across so far! I loved how creepy this was despite not really knowing exactly what's going on yet; I think this volume sets up the series really well. I can't wait to continue!

This book was my very first opportunity to read manga. It was recommended by a book tuber I admire, who mentioned this series, was brought to a conclusion because the writer was experiencing the things in real life that he had fabricated for the book. I was not sure what to expect from the style of writing. I also had to Google the direction to read manga, ha ha. This was such a fun story, and I found myself being genuinely startled on numerous occasions. I highly recommend this book and hope to someday Finish the remaining chapters!!

The overall feel is a kind of quiet unease, with disturbing details sometimes ramping up to a climatic reveal. Very little in the way of explanations (which I approve of). Fragments of short scenes, some just a handful of pages, often share overlapping characters and themes, but there's no clear narrative arc. This works both for and against the story. Interestingly enough, the longest segment is set in an historical era, with men drinking and telling standard ghost stories; this is the least successful segment IMO.

There's some gorgeously detailed art, and the character drawing mostly steers clear of the classic "cute manga" style that I don't care for.

"In the midst of a cloudless thunderstorm… led by the bittersweet smell of unripe, hanging fruit… the lone god swarms… and absently turns the worn-out seasons."

Wtf?! My skin is crawling after reading this. It was so bizarre and unsettling, the only thing that came out of my mouth after reading this was, "what in the f**k!"
It was so damn good and I can’t wait to read the second volume.

This book leaves impressions, lasting feelings of unease.

The mechanics are a bit too repetitive, with expected jump scare moments instead of genuine jump scare.

It is clear that Junji Ito is an inspiration to the author, but the style is not quite there yet. I'm still willing to read the follow-ups.

Well, here's a possible successor to Junji Ito. A series of very short interconnected vignettes slowly unravels a vague supernatural confluence of hair, shadows, and crows that stretches from modern day Japan back to World War II and the 17th century. It all seems centered around an extremely phallic idol representing a local spirit invoked in funeral rituals in a small town in Japan that seems to be expanding its territory and scope.

It's all weird and confusing, but also intriguing. I immediately put holds on the next two volumes at my local library.

This got high praise and I’m not sure why. They story telling us disjointed. Which isn’t a big deal, but the payoffs are mid at best. The art is ok. Some page turns are great but most are rather lackluster imo. I dunno, I guess this was hyped up more for me and I was expecting something better. It was just subpar for me.

Wow, not sure what the hell I just read but it was deeply disturbing!
Wish it had been more linear cause I’m super confused with all the characters and storylines.

Wow, ok. So I liked the short story horror. Short chapters really helps this. What really got me is how just holding the manga as I was reading just felt wrong. Like I was holding a black mass in my hands. Especially after the chapter where the kids find the box in the tree. Wow, this dude just channeled evil. Lol you know it’s a good horror when it feels evil.

Do I fully understand what I just read? No.
Was it absolutely creepy as hell? Yes.
Am I excited for the next one? Hell yes!

Great creepy art, a nonlinear story that's slightly confusing but somehow works, I love how it kinda represents how a radio listener hears snippets of media when skipping through stations. I'll admit, it is slightly confusing, and there's a lot to keep up with, but I am so damned intrigued to read on!

Normally I'd write this huge review but not tonight. This was so underwhelming. When you read about a book being so scary that the author has to take a break from writing it then you imagine something terrifying. I understand that fears are subjective, but this was just meh. It didn't really feel like the story flowed and dare I even say it was on the boring side. I suppose there are a few images that bordered on the scary side, but the fear just wasn't here for me. I won't continue with this.

Light on story, yet somehow high on spooks. Great art and scares, with most of the story being told in the art, which I don't necessarily mind but I would've liked some more writing. I liked the addition of the asterisks explaining certain things about Japanese culture and customs for non-Japanese readers. I can't wait to read more of this. Still unsure whether I want this for my personal collection though (picked it up at the library). If the other volumes are this good, I think I might!

[3.5 stars] Creepy as fuck but pretty confusing

The story takes place across different timelines, showing how Ogushi's curse affects all kinds of people. Its origin is sprinkled here and there in the book, and because of how it jumps around, the overarching plot is hard to decipher.

But so far the big picture doesn't seem to be the point, because it focuses more on individuals scenes and the horror of being breached by clumps of hair and contorted faces. There's a jump scare-like aspect that kind of haunts you, and just when you think you're used to seeing the haunting of Ogushi's curse, another version pops up.

Impressive, and wonderfully scary, but I hope the next volumes are less convoluted. Would also recommend getting the physical book, I'm currently reading it digitally and do feel like the screen aspect is kind of taking away from the fear factor at times.

This is a very good adult horror manga. Genuinely creepy, amazing art, and interesting plot. It’s very disjointed as the story jumps around pretty quickly in a non linear way. I actually liked that because there would be a random scene that makes no sense and 100 pages later we finally get the meaning. Everything centers around an entity that uses hair as it’s outlet. If Junji Ito’s Uzumaki was about the curse of spirals, this is definitely the curse of hair.

at first individual stories build until there’s a pretty clear line of continuity between them, im sure they all come to a head at some point. there’s details that you learn and you start to notice the patterns and as you learn more the suspense builds pretty well. there was even some pretty good jumpscare moments. it reminds me of spongebob how it mostly has a kind of cartoony style, then switches abruptly to realistic in certain parts which makes it creepier. overall it reminds me a lot of junji ito’s uzumaki, and i hate to make that comparison bc that seems to be one a lot of people make, and masaaki nakayama rlly has his own voice which i think is pretty different from junji ito’s that rlly stands out in this book (not to say either is more/less good than the other, i rlly enjoy reading both). there’s rlly unique moments and details, and if you like reading books where ur constantly flipping back to earlier pages to find details you missed/feel have a connection to what’s currently happening in the story, then you’ll rlly love this series. it reminds me of house of leaves in a way. it’s surreal and spooky! i can’t wait to read more of it.
