Quinn Reaper

Rate this book
Armed with caustic wit and Resting Doll Face, 24-year-old Quinn grapples through life, selling used underwear online to keep a dilapidated roof over her head. She escaped her past once before, but when an intruder arrives to escort her spirit to the hereafter, running isn’t an option.

Scheduled for a fatal brain aneurysm in eleven minutes, she strikes a desperate deal with Milo, her assigned reaper. If he’ll postpone her death by taking an impromptu vacation among the living, Quinn will be his travel guide. And she’ll replace his retired partner when her extension ends.

Counting down to her extinction through a nine-day road trip—complete with haunted hotels, a ghost-hunting ex-boyfriend, an obsessive-compulsive vegan, and a geriatric cat—Quinn has one goal for the dwindling remainder of her life: To torment the man who’s stolen her future.

Any book that makes me laugh deserves five stars, the story itself was great, full of humor, heartbreak and more. I will admit the cover is what convinced me to pick this up.

Never in my entire lifetime have I read comedy/tragedy so well combined as Jesi Kellis does it. At this point I need to ask her "what is your obsession with death and love after life, girl?"

I had the immense privilege and pleasure to discover her through Tate Graham VS the Afterlife and now with Quinn Reaper.

Tate Graham was more romantic but this was way more funny and they are both 5 stars extra-ordinary books.
Listen, if you love those 2 books then you're absolutely my friend for liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife. If this is not your cup of tea, it's ok because I have no adjectives to describe this author but "eccentric" and "quirky".
Even though you may think her writing it's over the top, there is a big fat chance that you'll read a special thing so distinguished from the main-stream books.

Rounding up from 4.5 stars

This book caught me by surprise. While there were whimsical moments, this novel was much more introspective than I anticipated. It evoked a lot of feelings that I didn't expect and I actually cried at one point towards the end. Not what I expected when I started this book! That being said, I really enjoyed it, I just expected it to be a lighter read than it was.

Comedy driven

This was actually a very good book, Quinn is told, by Milo that she would die at 9:27. Milo is one of many Grimm Reapers, who happens to be looking for a new partner after his previous partner was forced to "retire". So he has decided that Quinn would be his new partner, so they strike a deal where a contract is in play. Some of the items in the contract is hilarious.
I have received this Advance Readers Copy from Goodreads, and I am leaving a fair and unbiased review.

I know this book got great reviews but I could not handle the crude jokes all the way through it. I did laugh a couple times. I just wasn't into it. The whole trip they took was long and drawn out and full of insults, most of them sexual. Not my cup of tea. It was okay, but I had to skim a lot of it.

I will never understand how this book has mostly five-star reviews. The first two or so chapters were pretty good, a little over the top, but I suppose that was the point. Quinn and Milo seemed like interesting characters at first, but quickly became two of the most insufferable, poorly written characters I have ever had the misfortune of stumbling upon.

This book feels like it's written by an extremely horny high schooler. I'm all for sex jokes and sexual tension, but literally every other paragraph was something sexual. And nonsensically sexual, at that. It just made me roll my eyes. I, of course, expected a sexual relationship to start brewing between the characters, it was clear from the plot itself, but I found myself begging for the sexual aspects to just stop. But unfortunately, even when they briefly did, the book shifted from annoying and cringe-worthy to just straight-up boring. I couldn't take the characters, relationship, or plot seriously because I had less than zero investment in it for a long time already.

Also, literal endless sexual tension is the perfect way to make sure there's no investment in if the characters actually wind up together in the end. I just never want to read about these two's relationship again, period. You're supposed to keep readers' interest piqued and wanting more by only throwing in these moments every so often, even in a romance centric novel, given we're supposed to building up these characters becoming an official couple in the end, as with this very book. If it's endless sex jokes and sexual situations, I really don't care. There's nothing to get attached to or root for, it's just uncomfortable and most of all annoying.

In general, this book just wasn't written very well at all. I felt like every ten or so pages, we were just hit with the same few jokes over and over again. It was really like the author couldn't fill in the book's worth of content with anything else. 200 pages in and we're still making the same jokes several times a chapter as we were 30 pages in. It was so tiresome and exhausting.

This book's plot caught my attention. The two main characters initially did as well. I definitely think it had a lot of potential, but unfortunately it didn't live up to it. I was actually very excited to read this book, more so than a lot of other ones in my expansive collection, so safe to say I was extremely disappointed.

DNF It had potential. I liked that Quinn was mean and a conartist at the start. She felt more real than most down on their luck MCs in the genre. The premise was right up my alley, but what made it interesting at first was overused and annoying by halfway. "You're the pass" and "Mike suffers this unbelievable side effect" and "Mike has such a small penis." Oh my god shut up. Making these comments once was fine. Her bad attitude and personality was fine too at the start, but find some new material. These two people you hate, Brad/Paul and Lexa, are going out of their way to meet your demands and you just strive to shit all over everyone with no growth. No self reflection on your last days on earth. If at the halfway point you're not even kinda trying to reflect with a few days left to live then the author has failed. Quinn is a shitty person, like Eleanor from The Good Place. But Eleanor tried early on to be better, even when she slipped back into shitty habits and attitudes, she still kept trying. People around her helped. Everyone around Quinn just enables her to be awful. I'm sure Quinn will have an epiphany or something and her and Mike will live HEA, but honestly, I'm glad she was set to die alone.

Truly didn't think I'd like it

Won it off Goodreads giveaways. First few pages, didn't think I was going to be able to finish it....but then something clicked with Quinn and me....while she's a little more negative than me and i hate diet soda with a passion, I got her thought processes and quirks, by the time they got to the fair, I was in love with all the characters and laughing out loud...as my husband sat across from me on couch rolling eyes asking "what's so funny? Thought you said it was about a girl dying"...but seriously it's a good laugh, with some heavy stuff thrown in to give the story meat. Loved it.

A Step Into Another World
For a reader, such as myself, gifted with age, Quinn Reaper opens up a world of youth and death, current slang, issues, and life styles, and the age old themes of love and loss, friendship and sacrifice. So, a weighty read, but leavened with outrageous acts and thoughts, humor and a couple I would love to know...from a safe distance! A unique love story, a journey that will intrigue, entertain, and enrich the reader.
An author, new to me, with immense talent and imagination.

In Quinn Reaper I enjoyed a slow build, a strong protagonist-arc, deeply nuanced, emotionally damaged characters, lots of witty dialogue, dark humor, romantic suspense, and a powerful, inspiring ending. When I connected to Quinn (which for me didn't happen on the first few pages) I was hooked--and the hook was tethered to my heart. This author's debut novel and characters stuck with me after I finished the book, and I love that! I want more!

I received a free copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I won't lie, I almost didn't finish this book. It is pretty slow in the beginning. I felt absolutely no connection to the main characters for the first half of the book. But I'm glad I stuck it out because it got a lot better, for me. Once a little more of the backstories behind the main characters were divulged I quickly became invested in the story!

At first I really liked the book, loved Quinn’s sarcastic comments and attitude but that’s all you got from her and for the longest time she seemed flat and a Debbie downer. This made it hard for me to want to continue to read the book. Once she opened up and you started to see all the characters grow throughout the book I couldn’t put it down. Glad I finished the book and will continue the series.

Full teaser at https://wellreadpiratequeen.blogspot....

I can count my living "insta-buy" authors on one hand .... and Jesi Kellis has just occupied the middle finger and all thanks to the fact that I'm pretty sure Amazon has my brain bugged.

The day after I debated flipping around my Alphabet Soup list (again) and making my Q title my N author (and, hence, needing a new Q title), this beauty appeared as a freebie in my email.

I grabbed it, then I bothered to read the description, then I started to pick out blips for "is it a Friday book or a Tuesday book?" Thankfully, the Kindle gives page numbers AND percentages so Friday it is .... obviously.

I've decided that I'm definitely okay with being bugged because this book is freaking amazeballs. It could easily have been a Sunday book with how many highlights I've made and quotes I have copied into thee ol' blog notebook ... but the Sunday posts don't get nearly the traffic as Friday, and y'all need to know about this book and the author who now calls my middle finger home, so ...

Quinn is gloriously snarky and (seemingly) doesn't give two shits about much and I love her. She is, unapologetically, a bit of a bitch but you wouldn't know by looking at her :

********************
"Fortunately for me, I have a condition called Resting Doll Face. It's the polar opposite of Resting Bitch Face. I look like a much more pleasant human being than I actually am. "
*********************

Life is all well and good ... well, it's acceptable ... ish ... until she comes home to her deadbolted shoebox apartment and there's a man sitting at her kitchen table in a Christmas sweater ... in June ... and no one can see or hear him but her.

********************
He's probably an escaped mental patient. While his red-carpet hair says No Autographs Please, his tacky Christmas sweater basically screams, 'Give me another eggnog or I'll stab Aunt Mildred.'
********************

Yep. That's Milo.

Who's Milo?

Go back and read the description. I've already given you more than I should have with the added blips.

Better yet, just go get the book.

[Word of warning : once you reach the last third or so you will probably also need to get a box of kleenex. I did say, after all, that she seemingly doesn't give two shits about much, didn't I?]

This book isn't funny, but it definitely has funny moments. It's not tragic, either, though there are parts in it that will break your heart (my eyes did not stay dry while reading this). It didn't even feel to me like a book about death. This is a love story. It's a damn good one, too.

Quinn can be vexing at times, very much so. For more than a third of the book I found myself wondering why she was so mean to people. Was this supposed to be funny? Because to me, it wasn't. What happened to her that caused her to put up these walls?

At one point while reading this book, I said to myself, I says, "There better be some major growth in this book or I'm giving it 1 star." Please notice my rating.

Because of my personal history and professional background, the first third or so of this book was driving me friggin' nuts. I mean, shouting, "What the hell, Quinn," in my empty living room, nuts. And yet, we have my rating.

I loved this book. Not all of it. There were parts that I flat out hated. There were parts that made me laugh my butt off, and parts that brought me to tears (and I'm talking punch to gut emotional stuff). It all came together, though, and to me, it just...worked. It genuinely felt at times like I was just hanging with these characters (and seriously, wow; great characters).

Yeah, man. This is a book about love, and all that can come with it. I think it's definitely worth a read, and it's one of the most enjoyable books I've read this year. I loved it, in the end, and I hope you will, too.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I picked it because I liked the theme of the story, becoming a reaper and I hate to say this, but I judge a book by its cover. And I loved the cover art. The story is interesting, sad, and ridiculously funny all at the same time. I never got bored, and I did not want the story to end.

I have to say Quinn is extremely unlikeable as a human being. She treats people horribly, cheats, steals and in a way blackmails. But toward the end you start to understand, not condone, her attitude and choices. You learn about her and her horribly dysfunctional (and that's saying it mildly) family. She ends up going on an unplanned road trip with her "Collector", new OCD best friend, and old boyfriend. This trip is something I have done and would love to do again.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was the hateful language between her and her companions got a bit old and repetitive.

I do hope Ms. Kellis continues to write this series. I haven't laughed this much while reading in a long time.

Pre-maturely Hated it.

I’ve got to admit Quinn Buick WAS the most vile, disgustingly, willfully stupid characters I’ve ever had the ability to spend my nights with. More than half way through the novel and I still did not believe she could redeem herself. It is Milo, Lexa and Paul who endear themselves to her that made me love them and despise her more. Her cruel jokes get very bitter very quickly and stop appearing like a defense mechanism.
Her love of Katrina, saving Dog and hugging Lexa finally allowed me to like Quinn. Paul’s insight about ‘ghosts’ was one of the best revelations. In the end Quinn CAN have a full and good life BUT love jumped off the page and I fell in love with her.
Death isn’t the end when you’re in love with a reaper. And I can admit I was addicted to this novel in spite of myself and I’m glad I stuck it out. Quinn’s brand of sarcasm has a time & a place and I was happy to see it.

Read all the way through

If you do not like crude or vulgar humor. Skip this book. Seriously, skip it instead of leaving negative reviews.

Quinn's character is very unlikable in the beginning of this book. If you read it all the way through, you will learn about her life. It's tragic and you learn why she's built these walls up that doesn't allow her to let anyone close or for her to be friends with anyone. Let alone love.

So when she's forced on a road trip with Milo, her reaper who's on vacation, her ex Paul, and 'friend' Lexi, she met at an drug addicts anonymous meeting. She does think mean things about them throughout the road trip. Again this is her couping Mechanism. Is it right? Absolutely not, but it's what allows her to keep people away.

She does grow towards the end of the book. She learns from her mistakes, she does see that she has to make a sacrifice for love, family and friends.

Funny book. This is so totally out of my regular reading preferences, but I thought this was hilarious. Quinn lives in Seattle in an area where drugs are prevalent, and people are just surviving. She walks into her apartment at Pieview Estates (actually Pineview Estates...but the 'n' is burned out) to find a man sitting, waiting for her. After some conversation she finds out that he is a collector...he is there to collect her when she dies. A contract is signed, and they try to outdo each other with the interpretations of the contract over the next few days (she has an extension for her life -9 days. During this time, she decides to make her "murderer" suffer (he does the same back to her). They go on a road trip with two of her "friends", where she discovers things about her life.

She is so awful I almost stopped reading, I'm glad I didn't

Quin is a total jerk. To everyone, but especially to people who are nice to her.

She is vulgar and mean and I almost stopped reading.

But then I realized that I was missing what was really going on.

She was in pain. She didn't think she deserved any thing but the worst.

And the strangest road trip imaginable days before her certain death showed who she really is.

And how people loved her in spite of her doing her best trying to get them not too.

I am glad I didn't stop reading. It ended the best possible way while not being in any way predictable.

Five stars!

A vacation/reaping/ghost hunting/OCD/animal friendly adventure comedy you didn't know you needed.

Last year I read 220 plus books I rate them but normally do not leave reviews. But you made me hate Quinn and then fall in love with her I know (gross). I had to tell my husband a few of the "Hey Q- dawgs remember when's" and my oldest daughter about ghost hunting Katrina. Anyways a great book with lots of laughs made me cry at and near the end quite figuratively I would read again and added it to my faves. Thank you for the adventure to a Portland (or almost to) that I didn't know about or know I needed.

This book was a bit off for me in the beginning but I kept reading in hopes that it would pick up. There were times that it was just cringy, quite a bit of repetitive narrative, and a few laughs. Definitely makes you think "what would you do with 9 days".
I want to say this book was great, but there were too many things that just didn't make this a solid read for me. Like how did the main character start off so forceful and RDF her way through life end up having no control over her nine days to being a total sap at the end of those days.

Laugh till you cry

This sweet, poignant horror story with a heart of gold touches on all the feels. Probably most so smell. Descriptions of the pup and eldercat shall live forever in my memory bank. Unlike many other brilliantly described moments in this book, not in a great way. These characters, like family (maybe not in some cases), might not be who you choose, but in the end, who you need. Highly recommend this trashy magnificence; definitely more than The Notebook.

By reading the blurb on the book, I thought it was going to be funny. There are a few parts that were funny. but a lot of it just gets lost because it's repeated so much that it loses its luster. and by 43%, I almost dnf the book. but I kept peddling along. it did not get any better. and when I finished it, it was literally wtf did I just read. also leaves you feeling like there should be more. another book? novella? the book being longer than it was? I had such high hopes for this book because it sounded so good. sucks that it was such a letdown.

Have my wife to thank for picking this one out for me. She really nailed it.
This is a cleaver, unique sotryline. Had me laughing (quite embarrassingly) out loud. Loved the characters.
I borrowed this via Kindle unlimited, finished/returned the book, then promptly purchased it. For me, it's one definately worth re-reading, and I wanted it in my library.
I'm guessing that two years on (08/2020), there won't be a sequel, pity.

interesting book

This book really makes you think. It’s not a typical rom-com. It is a journey of one woman who faces the end of her very young life only to find answers and things she didn’t know she needed. There were so many unexpected paths followed to the characters finding answers. I really enjoyed how the lead character Quinn dealt with life. She had so much tragedy in her life but finally finds peace. I loved this book.

Different is Awesome!!

Some of you, are not even going to try to read this book. I think, that’s a shame. This book is different and it’s Awesome! The language is modern and captivating. It’s love and what you would be willing to do, if you could save it. I look forward to reading her other books. I read this book, beginning to end in a matter of hours. Give this book a chance, with the open mind of a book dragon. On to the next one Jesi Kellis.

This was strange. Quinn is kind of terrible. She has no direction, no loyalty, no morals. She's a survivor though and really, really funny--in an overtly vulgar way. Milo has a lot of quirks and grounds the story. He's also funny in the same vulgar way. It seems odd to go on this bizarre road trip during your last days. But Quinn isn't the kind of person who has a bucket list, she's just not ready to go yet. Very unique story.

We can only hope this first novel is the start of a brilliant career by this new author whose voice is all her own. Quinn Reaper will make you laugh, irritate you, cause you tears, and make you fall in love. Often all with the same act! The book is a road trip as four oddballs all twine their destinies for better or worse. And almost all of them are actually alive.

This was an awesome read. It opens with an interesting premise but then deviates from where you think it is going, but you enjoy the whole ride. The writing is very enjoyable and Kellis does a masterful job of balancing the line between humor and heart.

I look forward to reading more from the author!
