When Eliza Wright’s first London Season ends prematurely in scandal, she’s only too glad to return to her quiet life in the country. After all, her gardens hold far more appeal to her than the happenings of the ton. Much to her chagrin, her wealthy father concocts another arrangement: a marriage of convenience to the recent successor to an earldom, a man whose title will restore her place in society. Wedding someone like the somber, detached Lord Ashton is the last thing Eliza pictured for herself. Yet with the life she thought she’d lead crumbling before her eyes, what other choice does she have?
Edward Adderley, the Earl of Ashton, has spent the past six years roaming the Continent, trying to escape a scandal of his own. Ever since his first marriage ended in unspeakable tragedy, he has cut himself off from others, vowing to never place himself in such a position again. But when he fulfills his father’s dying wish by returning to England, only to find his estate bankrupt and in shambles, he sees no way forward but through marriage to the well-dowered Miss Wright.
Their union is to be a business arrangement, nothing more. That is, until Edward finds himself drawn to the unconventional Miss Wright, and Eliza’s attraction to the brooding earl becomes too intense to ignore. Could the fragile bond they construct blossom into a second chance at happiness for them both? Or will the secrets that linger in their pasts forever stand between them?
Jane Maguire is a Canadian author whose lifelong passions for history, writing, and love stories inevitably led her to begin penning historical romance novels. While her love of historical fiction spans all eras, she focuses her writing on high society in the regency period. She enjoys crafting stories with lots of angst, which makes giving her characters their happily ever afters all the more satisfying. When she isn't at her computer writing and researching, you can find her vacationing in the Rocky Mountains, playing classical music on the piano, or simply curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. She lives with her husband, two kids, and a very floofy cat.
When Eliza Wright’s first London Season ends prematurely in scandal, she’s only too glad to return to her quiet life in the country. But, her wealthy father has other plans: arranging a marriage to a recently inherited Earl. Edward Adderley, Earl of Ashton, has returned to England, only to find his estate bankrupt. Marrying Miss Wright will be strictly a business arrangement, nothing more. Will his heart start to thaw as he gets to know her?
This is the debut novel for Jane Maguire and I thought it was very promising. It is a slow burn with a hero and heroine who initially don’t get on. I really loved Eliza, who was incredibly warm and accepting. I liked seeing her establish friendships with Edward’s sister and a village widow with a tarnished reputation. I would have liked to have seen a little more balance with Edward, but I liked that I didn’t see the final twist coming…I always appreciate when an author can surprise me!
Tropes: Marriage of Convenience, Class Difference
Steam: 2.5
* I received an ARC and this is my honest review. #Booksprout
I enjoy arranged marriage stories, and this one was well executed. The heroine was so loving and strong. She was just what the earl needed for a second chance at a life not devoid of happiness and love. I definitely plan to continue with the series.
I truly love heroines like Eliza. She is generous and helpful and takes care of others. The hero was amazing too. Very sweet story of a marriage of convenience turning into love. Both of them had past incidents that shaped their personalities and made them better people. It was the same old story but the author made me like them. Can't wait to read her again. Free in KU.
Eliza Wright is out of options to find a husband when she’s involved in a scandal. Her father hastens her off to the country and approaches the Earl of Ashton’s late father to make a match between the heir, Edward and his daughter. When Edward returns home upon his father’s death, he finds an estate that needs maintenance. However, he has no funds and is forced to consider the offer of marriage since it comes with a generous dowry. He doesn’t expect to fall for Eliza when they meet. Having been betrayed by his previous deceased wife, can he trust in love again? Eliza wants to be loved for herself and not for her fortune. She realizes Edward has a good heart if she can only get him to thaw his cold exterior. Together they can forge a union neither of them anticipated. An enjoyable historical romance with likable characters and easy pacing.
Edward Adderley is forced to go back home from the Continent, where he spent the last six years running from his troubles and from himself. His father is dying and he’ll soon become the new Earl of Ashton. The family coffers are tragically empty and he’ll be forced to take drastic measures to keep his earldom afloat. Remarrying is not a thing he’d like to do, ever, but he has no choice… Eliza Wright is the daughter of a wealthy self-made man and her first season has just ended in scandal. She would be content to remain in the country, dabbling with her herbs and concoctions and become a spinster, but her father has other plans for her… I picked up this book from Booksprout because of the trope, marriage of convenience, my favorite. I didn’t know that this was the debut novel of a new author and I was pleasantly surprised by her writing skills. The book is a slow burn, but I was so intrigued that I couldn’t put it down until the end. As I said, I’m a sucker for an angsty marriage of convenience! And this is perfect in that way. I loved the way Eliza struggled with her feelings and with the passion Edward awakens in her and I think the author was very good at portraying the difficulties of a young woman without any prior sex education… And of course I loved Edward, because tormented heroes are another favorite trope of mine! So this book definitely ticked all my boxes and I’ll give it five stars! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is my 3rd book by Jane Maguire. She only has a total of 5 books out. I saw her recommended on one of my steamy FB groups and thought I’d give her a try. She told me herself in a FB author takeover, that she has steam but isn’t super steamy and she isn’t but her characters have plenty of sex and it is a little descriptive just not pages and pages of it. But it is nicely done. The first series I read of hers was, Rockliffe Dynasty and they were pretty good reads. I really like her writing and I feel she gets great depth in her characters.
I couldn't put this book down. I really loved Eliza and Edward. I loved their characters and their personalities. I loved their story. I loved how nice of a person Eliza was. They generally seemed like a "perfect" couple. Just an overall really good read. I didn't anticipate reading the other 2 in the series at this point but this book was so good, I must continue. :)
I'm a sucker for the "marriage of convenience" trope and Regency time period books...when you combine the two, it's a yes from me. The Viscount Who Loved Me is the standard.
This book did not measure up.
The characters had little development by the end (they got past their trauma through the power of love? ew.) and no backstory (besides a trivially traumatic event in the female MC's past and the male MC's botched first marriage - neither of which I really cared about, tbh) through which I could build a connection as we progressed through the narrative.
Also, I needed more time for the embers of their love story to burn. Instead, we're met with a very abrupt and uncalled-for scene on the wedding night that had zero build-up and little to no emotional charge. Give the girls what they want...ANGST. But no, we were not fed. I was confused to say the least. The sudden passionate moments were a real turn-off in this book. One of the beautiful things about other Regency romances that I've read is that they take time to let us understand the main character(s) before we get to anything spicy. We're either rooting for the characters or sympathizing or biting our nails with anticipation. This book did not create space for any of that and perhaps it's because I really just couldn't give a flying farthing for any of the characters. Except Alice...really, let's give Alice her own book based on her story in this one. Far more compelling.
A lady who is so giving. Condemned for no reason and sent to live with no so lovely family in the country the heroine is not sure what to do. For the most part abandon by her father for most of her life now he is making it rather difficult for her. With no real choice she marries the man who he father wants and hero he does not to marry either but must follow through with what his father has plans or the estate and his sister will face difficulties. Edward and Eliza have an interesting path to follow. I truly enjoyed Eliza is one outstanding character and once Edward got it together he was alright too. I loved the girls and Edward’s sister. There is a bit of danger in this gem too. It was a really good book and I highly recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

Full of misunderstandings and angst this is an amazing book. This is the debut novel of this author. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This was my first book by this author. She handles language well, and there are individual paragraphs that convey the characters feelings, thoughts, or actions with artistry. However, the characters felt more like puppets than living, breathing people: they exist to serve the plot rather than living in the pages of this book. And the plot is utterly predictable.
This book is not awful. It is, however, unremarkable.
Honestly I started replacing the names to characters I ship in anime and was more invested than these two original characters. The book is okay but really is written like a mid-tier fanfic. Like it’s not wattpad level but it ain’t AO3 either.

Will he be able to let the past go to smooth his future …
I confess I have seen this book pass along but from an unknown author to me, I did not know where to stand with this book, then the author appeared on my Instagram feed, so I finally stopped by and read more than the title. I love to discover debuting authors, my lazy self this way does not have to go through an exhausting list of past published works. So I decided to give it a go, and while it was not what I could have expected, an angsty read, I very much enjoyed my reading.
As often in marriage of convenience romance, the chemistry takes its time to ignite, and nothing is rushed here, and while there is a pull at the beginning, quite against the main characters’ will, as none is who the other expected, there is so much between them, they won’t be able to move forward until they address the dead body in the closet.
Edward has been estranged for six years with his family and upon his return on the English soil, he learns from the mouth of his dying sire, he is to be married to rescue his legacy from crippling debts. And while his first thoughts are to run back to the place he has found solace on the continent, he pauses enough to rethink his actions, deeds which would hurt his sole sister beyond belief.
Eliza is quite content with her actual life, the scandal which sent her back in the countryside did her good in fact, as she in truth felt much awkward in society. Yet she is not prepared when her father announces her he has found her a titled spouse. So despite her protest, she can’t do nothing but comply. Both are likable persons, and while Eliza in her naivety is straightforward and honest, Edward hold back, always looking for hidden agendas. This is a tale which takes the time to introduce its characters with their flaws and talents, one with no real villain except if you count the fantoms of their pasts. And as long they do not find in them the will and strength to explore their past wounds, there will still be a skeleton lingering between them. 4.5 stars
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 three onscreen lovemaking scenes
I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Secrets and scandal Another beautiful „marriage of convenience“ story, one of my favorite tropes.
Edward learns from his father on his deathbed that the family is bankrupt. He has vowed not to marry again, but the only solution to save the family estate is to marry Eliza, who has a rich father. Eliza, for her part, is involved in a scandal in London and her father sees the chance for Eliza to become a countess by marrying Edward.
The special thing about the book for me is that until about two-thirds of the way through the book, even as a reader, you don’t know what kind of scandal Eliza had and what Edwards first marriage was like. What did Eliza do or did she do anything at all? Did Edward love his first wife, how did she die?
The absolute highlight of the book for me is the rain scene, which leads to the first real rapprochement between the two. This scene gives me Pride and Prejudice vibes. How the marriage of convenience becomes a real relationship between the two is beautifully written. Both characters are written in a complex and understandable way. Eliza‘s declaration of love went a little to quickly for me. But it was all the more beautiful what a development this triggered in Edward. The highlight of this development is how Edward puts Eliza‘s father in his place and stands up for his wife.
A very nice book that I would definitely recommend.
At the end of last year, I read His Christmas Rose by Jane Maguire and absolutely loved it (I’ll probably re-read it this winter!). So, one of my goals for 2025 was to try more of Jane’s books. I finally got around to it this week and decided to start with her debut, the first in the Inconveniently Wed series, Secrets and a Scandal.
This is an arranged marriage romance between Eliza, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, and Edward, the widowed Earl of Ashton. Eliza’s father hopes the marriage will save her reputation and aid his social climbing, while Edward, although he swore never to marry again, needs Eliza’s dowry to restore his neglected estate. Their story is about learning to trust, letting go of the past, and being open to love.
I adore Jane’s writing style, it’s such a joy to read. She truly brings the characters, time period, and setting to life. Eliza is an eccentric, but undeniably likeable, heroine. Her compassion and kindness shine through the pages. Edward is a little tortured, and therefore cold, but thoroughly redeems himself by the end. The cast of supporting characters were all delightful, and there was a real sense of found family amongst them. This is a perfect summertime read, and I cannot wait to start Rumours and a Rake!
Neither wants to marry, yet their fate is different. When Edward is summoned at home after six years of estrangement, he never thought that his life would be changed forever. He wants nothing with his father's title and legacy but he cannot leave everything behind when her suster's future depends on him, now that his wastrelof a father has brought the estate to ruin. Moreover, he is also duty-bound into a marriage of convenience with a not so prime and proper heiress, though the thought of remarrying is the last thing he wishes. Eliza is the daughter of a driven self-made man, rich as Cross but lacking social recognition. Is his dream achievabke? WHY, , yes it is though marriage to a title. And so his daughter Eliza becomes a bargain chip on the marriage mart. The story of Edward and Eliza is one of discovery. A tormented and distrustful young man has the chance of his life to meet the woman who is so honest and giving that leaves him with nothing else but to fall in love with her. A well written book, populated with well-constructed characters and a complex plot with twists and turns. A wonderful surprise for a first-novel of a young writer.
This is quite the heart warming story about a misunderstood young woman and a scorned Lord finding themselves with each other. The book is easy to read and very enjoyable and I really liked that the intimate scenes were not pornographic, but more romantic. There is not much of a drama, but more two characters causing themself pain due to missunderstandings. Also, there were two parts in the end that were a bit misplaced since there were no signs at all during the entire story, and gave more of a feeling the author either wanted to fill up space or had a second thought of tying together a red thread.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars because the drama in the end was misplaced, there should have been reflections during the entire story to connect them. The same goes for the fight with the father, it gave the feeling that the author has given way for a red thread in the beginning of the book, forgot about it and realized in the end they needed to close the thread.
But, it is a good story through the most part of the book, and i can recommend it for anyone 15+ into historical romance.
Six years after swearing he would never return to England, Edward is recalled home as the patriarch's health deteriorates. Upon arriving, he discovers that his father is on the verge of death, the family's finances are seriously compromised and he needs to marry the daughter of a wealthy merchant to obtain the dowry and thus save his family's estate. He doesn't want marriage. The girl, named Elizabeth, was involved in a recent scandal, with undisclosed details and is with family members, far from London. She doesn't want marriage. She's not the only one with undisclosed secrets. From their first interactions, undisclosed secrets will disrupt Elizabeth and Edward's relationship, despite the feelings that gradually arise between them. Edward, especially, is distant at many times, making it difficult for the couple to approach. Gradually, Elizabeth and, especially Edward, share details of their past and learn that it is necessary to learn to forgive others and even yourself in order to achieve happiness.

I enjoyed this historical romance story with all of the characters. The two main characters were Eliza Wright and Edward Adderley, the Earl of Ashton.
Eliza Wright first season in London did not go so will. It ended with a scandal that made her return to the country. She likes living in the country. But her father wants her to be wed. So he has arranged a marriage for her. She is not happy about it.
Edward Adderley, the Earl of Ashton has returned to England when his father needs him. His father is not doing well. After the death of his father he must take care of his sister and every things else. His father had a wish that his son marry to help the estate from being bankrupt. But he is not happy about this wish because of what happened to his first wife.
This was a fun read. It had action, adventure, drama and suspense throughout. There are even secrets that are told. There were a few laughs and giggles throughout to.
I received a complimentary copy via StoryOrigin. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
This was an absolutely delightful read by a new-to-me author. I am always excited when I stumble upon a new author in this genre. It is Ms. Maguire's debut novel and it shows much promise for her as an author. Eliza's first season does not go well and it ends in scandal. Her father arranges a marriage of convenience to help repair her standing in society. Edward, Earl of Ashton, agrees to the match because he is also in need of something, financial help. What starts out as a business arrangement develops into something more. But secrets from their past could threaten their blossoming romance. The characters were well-developed and interesting and I enjoyed seeing their romance develop throughout the story. A delightful and charming story that held my interest the whole way through. I hope to read more from this author soon!
I received a complimentary copy from StoryOrigin and am voluntarily leaving my review.
I am rounding this up from a 3.5 star rating because I think this series (and author) has tons of potential! This is an arranged marriage/marriage of convenience trope which is a favorite of mine. The widowed MMC has returned to England and his family after an estrangement. After inheriting an impoverished estate, he is forced to marry again for money. The MFC is the daughter of a wealthy merchant who wants to marry her off for a title. Both have had difficult pasts. What I like about the story is the focus on the couple trying to build a life together. Neither wants to marry the other but they work to make the best of their situation, especially Eliza. She is a very likable, strong, caring MFC. Edward and Eliza’s relationship struggles felt real. And their relationship time line felt natural. There was also nice amount of steam. I’m looking forward to Edward’s sister Catherine’s story.
Eliza Wright is the daughter of a wealthy merchant who is anxious to advance socially. Much to her father's outrage, she is innocently involved in a scandal during her first London Season. Happily for Eliza, her largely-absent-in-her-life father sends her to his country estate, where she indulges her interest in medicinal herbs.
Edward Adderley, future Earl of Ashton, fled to the continent for 6 years after a scandal of his own. He is called home because of his father's illness, only to find him on his deathbed. He learns that his father has bankrupted the estate and has arranged a marriage with the wealthy daughter of a businessman. He is forced to recognize his duty and his promise to his father. Yet another marriage of convenience trope.
The rest is the two of them figuring out how to get along, with a bit of excitement at the end. There are a couple of spicy scenes. 3.5 stars rounded up
I checked out this book on the recommendation of a readers' group I belong to, and I'm glad I did. Always happy to find a new author to like in the Regency romance genre. I will admit, it took me a bit to get into the story, as there's a somewhat slow start, and the plot contains some of the typical tropes (H can't love due to a bad first marriage, h's relatives are unreasonably nasty, etc.). But the author's writing style is smooth and there a few markedly beautiful passages. I'm so tired of silly/unlikable/overly anachronistic heroines, and I'm glad Eliza breaks that mold. As a plus, there is a an effective twist at the end. The love scenes are tasteful and well-written.
There are hints that Catherine's story will be next, and I'm looking forward to it. This is an author with promise.
Eliza & Edward have been given no choice but to marry. This isn't something that either want but they have to learn to accept it. Eliza has started getting involved with the people that live on Edward's large estate. She has found her place but she doesn't feel the same about Edward. Her feelings for him scare her as she isn't too sure what to make of them. Edward is happy that Eliza has taken well to her new position but he is trying to keep his distance from her. Can they ever find common ground in their marriage? Just when they think that they have everything sorted out someone tries to take it all away. Will they get their happy everafter? Great characters. Love Eliza & her personality as she is so giving & accepting. Edward is trying hard to let go of the past. He is a good man that will stand by Eliza no matter what. A good read
Eliza Wright’s first Season ends in scandal and she returns home in disgrace. But her father has decided to arrange a marriage of convenience to Edward Adderley, the Earl of Ashton, to restore her acceptability. This will be nothing more than a business arrangement, but she has no other choice.
Fulfilling his father’s dying wish by returning to England, Edward finds his estate now bankrupt and in need of extensive repairs. His only solution is to marry Miss Wright who comes with a huge dowry. Will the two of them accept this second chance for each and allow themselves to fall in love? Or will the circumstances of their union turn them away from each other?
What a lovely story! An unwanted and arranged marriage between Eliza, a wealthy merchant’s daughter mired in scandal, and Edward, an Earl’s heir, becomes so much more than they expected. It was so easy to become instantly wrapped up and genuinely invested in this story. Edward’s emotional turmoil and fragility jumps off the page, making him an endearing and vulnerable character. Eliza, on the other hand, is a kind, quiet tower of strength, making her exactly what Edward didn’t know he needed. This is a well written, heartwarming story, full of surprises, and romantic moments that will leave you feeling uplifted and smiling.

4.5⭐️ Well, what a nice little surprise this was!😍
I really enjoyed reading it! The author managed to transport me back to regency era. And although I have read quite a lot of historical romances in the past…many of these books, even though I have enjoyed reading them, have this modern vibe to them….and because of that, I can’t really immerse myself into the story. Does that make sense?
But the writing style in this book managed to make me feel as though I was in a Pride & Prejudice movie.
Loved the marriage of convenience trope, the likeable and down to earth characters, the touch of angst here and there, and the spice was spicing, but in an elegant manner! 😏 So yeah, I couldn’t put it down!😍 I hope the next one will be just as good!🙏🏻
Herbs 🌿 and medicine 💊 for a broken 💔 and betrayal
Steamy romance; marriage consummation. Miss Eliza Wright has suffered a family betrayal, and Lord Edward Adderley, Earl of Ashton, has suffered both betrayal and tragic death. Edward returns home to rescue his estate at the behest of his dying father and to take care of his sister Catherine. He marries Eliza because her father wants the connections and to redeem his family name. Eliza is good with herbal medicine. They sort out their pasts. Eliza helps Alice Turner. Edward works to restore his estate. There is a rescue at the end of the story.
Lord and Lady Ashton—Dare to Love 🐎❤️💋❤️💋❤️💋❤️💋❤️🐎
Malicious fabrication & gossip may have led to scandal at Eliza’s debut as a tiny kernel of truth was malevolently twisted. Fortunately Eliza’s scheming Pa orchestrates his disgraced daughter’s marriage to an impoverished Earl and well, against all odds, the fairies sing, fate smiles, and magic has a heyday! Okay, that may not be the exact plot, but this steamy love story is almost magical as this soul shattered Earl named Edward falls deeply in love with his much misunderstood empathetic new wife and both find a new lease on life.
This is the story of Eliza and Edward. Both people have a past that haunts them and they spend the majority of the story overcoming their past. Eliza is a beautiful lady that is often misunderstood. Her willingness to help others causes scandals that follow her. Edward is just back at home to learn his dad left the estate penniless. Eliza’s dad is rich and wants social recognition that he doesn’t deserve so he uses a big dowry to entice Edward to marry his daughter. In the end the couple realizes that true love can come from an unconventional beginning. It was enjoyable and definitely worth a read.
