The Accident

Rate this book
She appears in Megan's mirror one day, nothing more than a wispy, shadowy plume, glowing with an eerie light. Her voice is faint and hollow, like a distant echo. The voice of a young girl.

Strangest of all is her request.

"I beg you to trade places with me, Megan. For just one week. Let me live again."

Megan is overcome with fear. Yet she is drawn to the shadow in the mirror, unable to look away. Fascinated by the oddly soothing voice, she listens to a tale of a horrible accident many years before. A tale she would never forget.

Gradually, Megan begins to realize that she has no choice. As terrified as she is, she knows she must make the trade....

God, I just love Point Horror. These are the books of my childhood, those trashy, mindless horror stories full of cliches, stick-figure characters, threatening messages written on composition notebook paper, and murder after murder after... And I loved them. In fact, I still do. Whenever I need a reminder of simpler times, I reread Point Horror and the Fear Street series and Goosebumps and all those other retro titles that raised me and, in doing so, I weirdly rediscover who I really am at my core. I can try to branch out, read the classics and grow as a reader, but these '90s horror staples are always waiting for me to come crawling back. They were there for me as a kid and they are here for me now, when I need them most. God bless Point Horror!

Also, that Point Horror show for HBO Max better not fall through. I need it like I need the new Netflix Christopher Pike and Fear Street series. Man, it is a great time to be a '90s kid!

Rule of thumb: It's best not to switch bodies with a ghost in a mirror.

The opening chapter is quite striking, involving three teens in a car crash.
The description of the wreck is very vivid and effective.

The narrative is told through Megan, who's excited for her sixteenth birthday.
Despite being a pulpy teen horror, the plot conveys themes of mortality as Megan's three friends escaped near death in the crash whilst Juliet the ghost was also young when she passed - atleast giving Megan a reason to agree with the 7 day switch.

Whilst the story was predicable, it still delivers as an enjoyable entry in the Point Horror range.

I read this with my book club that I run on Instagram where we revisit Point Horror and other books from our childhood - @talespointhorrorbookclub

Tagline - She has returned. From the dead…

Memorable For – Ghostly apparitions and body swaps!

Blurb -

She appears in Megan’s mirror one day, a pale shadow. She is the ghost of Juliet, a young girl who tragically drowned in the lake. She makes a strange request – she begs Megan to change places with her, just for a week. Megan reluctantly agrees, but who is Juliet?

Some Thoughts -

Whilst Megan is planning her sweet sixteenth party her friends have a terrible accident! Yep! A car loses control and three of Megan’s friends end up in hospital! Whatever could have happened to them?! And this is just the first of many strange terrifying accidents that occur! And when Megan find drawings predicting who will be next in true Final Destination style it gets serious! Yep! Not any old drawings either! They were top notch sought after art….of the accidents drawn in Crayola crayons don’t you know! What kind of twisted mind would draw such a sick pictures about a tragic accidents?! Oh maybe just the ghost that appears in Megan’s mirror and asks to swap bodies for a week! Just a day in the life of good old kind hearted Megan!

Other highlights include a funny geeky point horror love interest, a ghost who loves the colour purple, a best friend with extremely good reflexes, an Never Ending story style ending and denim shoulder bag!

Huge shout out to the mall with the hair salon called Cut It Again and the ice cream shop called Lickety-Split where you could order half a gallon of Triple Trouble ice cream!! #LifeGoals!

Diane Hoh once again had a cool concept but completely missed the mark. The main character Megan gets completely taken for a ride as she agrees to trade places with a creepy dead girl who appears in her mirror. Strange things begin to occur (most of which are foreshadowed by some pretty cool clues) but this was way too predictable. The ending was very easy to see coming and left a lot to be desired. I'll give this a 3/5 instead of a lower rating because Hoh did a decent job of creating some suspense as the story reached its climax, but overall this was pretty average. Recommended for fans of young adult horror, but that's about it.

This was a very interesting a different plot than I have read before. I enjoyed that part of it, although you could see who the culprit was pretty quickly, so when the “twist” came, it was already expected. For the characters, Juliet was an easily hateable character, so the author did a great job with that.

Title: The Accident
Series: Point Horror #16
Author: Diane Hoh
Overall Rating: 4 stars

When a car accident seriously injures three of her friends, Megan begins to hear the voices of a girl called Juliet, who was in accident herself and died. All she wants is a week in Megan's body, and Megan thinks she's kind and gentle. Why wouldn't she let this girl have a week of life? But as the week goes on, Juliet's intentions become more dark and sinister. How can Megan get her body back if nobody can hear her?

I loved the other Diane Hoh books that I've read, 1990's teen horror is a genre that I absolutely love. It's so cheesy but it's just so good. I think that this book is a really good addition to the Point Horror series, and I'm excited to read more of her books as I make my way through this series.

Ooooh this was so much fun. It has two of my favorites in it! A ghost, some aquatic horror! It started on a pretty crazy note, so I was sucked in right away. I looooved this book! It would’ve been a solid 5 stars if the ending was better. It just felt rushed, I thought there would be a little bit more but not so much. Still, a very great book!

There is nothing that would ever make me take away any stars from this book...five stars forever.

I can not remember if it was this book or The Invitation that introduced me to Diane Hoh as a writer but I'm beginning to think it was this one. The bright green title in its scary font, the amazing cover art and even that pink-purple spine just totally caught my eye.

We open with an introduction to some friends of a girl named Megan Logan. Jenny Winn, her sister Barbie and their friend Catherine "Cappie" Cabot are cutting school because it is so hot and a day on the lake sounds so much cooler.

They are talking about Megan getting ready to have a Sweet Sixteen birthday party soon and how she is struggling to ask cutie pie Justin Carr to be her date because she is just so shy. All of them, including Megan's best friend Hilary Bench, know that Justin is crazy about Megan as more than a friend but is thankfully not a pushy jerk of a guy.

The fun discussion on the drive is soon brought to a shattering halt as Jenny loses control of her car and can not stop it from ramming into a utility pole. Barbie is thrown from the car but the two other girls are trapped inside with electrical wires down about them.

While this is happening, Megan is at home trying on her party dress and then having a conversation with Justin on the phone about a math quiz. It is a pleasant, friendly and semi-flirty conversation until a comment from Justin makes Megan feel less than his type. When it ends mildly cold with Megan more angry at herself than Justin, she hangs it up to find the radio announcing the accident involving her friends.

Emotional, wondering if her friends might be dead, Megan soon finds her room dark and cold as a voice calls out her name:

"Why are you crying, Megan Logan?"

Megan turns around to find a shadowy figure in her mirror with a young girl's voice and a strange glowing light. Terrified at first, Megan soon finds that it is a spirit named Juliet coming to Megan because they share the same birthday and Megan now lives in the house on the lake left to her mother by her grandmother, Martha.

A house on the lake where Juliet died, drowning in a nearby cove in a boating accident. Forty-six years ago, she was supposed to have her own Sweet Sixteen party but it ended in tragedy.

She comes to ask a favor of Megan.

Juliet wants to trade places with Megan for one week. In all this time, Megan is the only one close to Juliet's age at death of fifteen, living on the lake where her spirit is bound and sharing the same day of birth. One minute after Megan's sixteenth birthday will be too late and she will never have the chance again...

Megan needs a few days to think about Juliet's request and she is soon forced to make a decision when there are drawings left in Megan's art cubbyhole. Crude drawings that are warnings of threats to her friends before the terrifying accident and then one before Hilary almost has a fatal fall from the catwalk in the auditorium of the gym.

The close calls also seem to point out a possible threat to Megan herself as everyone is close to her and she believes having Juliet in her body could help her find who is responsible. Juliet's a ghost and that means Megan will be able to be invisible and look for clues while Juliet can try and sense out a possible suspect.

Juliet says the switch will be easy and they can trade back on midnight the night before Megan's Sweet Sixteen. Still uneasy yet a kind-hearted person moved by Juliet's tragic tale, Megan agrees to the trade. No one else but Juliet can hear Megan, no one can see her and now Megan has to watch a girl who was once dead live her life.

What's one week when the lives of those around you are in danger? Megan is about to learn that sometimes not all accidents...are accidents.

There is a lot of suspense and snark and romance and terror to keep you entertained. It isn't hard to figure out a few details of where the plot is going as you near the inevitable twist or reveal of the final act. The aspects of the supernatural save the story from being too much like other Point Horror books that have none and even some with similar paranormal angles.

The characters make the story but to go into further detail would spoil it for those who have not read The Accident. The climax is harrowing and the ending is part heartwarming and part heartbreaking in a spooky, spine-tingling sort of way which I like.

Final yet sort of not final...know what I mean? If you don't that's okay too.

The Accident by Diane Hoh is definitely a Point Horror book that needs to be read and I highly recommend it.

After three of Megan's friends are injured in a car accident, she sees a girl named Julia in her mirror.
Julia had also been involved in an accident and asked Megan the simple favour of borrowing her body for a week...

I used to enjoy collecting the Point Horror series as a teen. This title is one of a few that I can't really recall having.
Found it to be an enjoyable read, but not one of Hoh's best.

Ok this one was so much fun! Loved the paranormal theme in it and listening to the audiobook from the 90’s was an absolute blast. Definitely one of the best Point Horror books I’ve read! 🪞

One-Line Review: Don’t give up your body, not for any reason. It’s the most precious thing you’ll ever own.

Full Review:

This was one of my childhood favourites. Reading it again, I'm not quite sure how to feel about it.

I think I'd have liked it better if I'd read it under a different imprint, at a different time. It's not really a horror story, more of an urban fantasy, and as I'm reading these books in October (Halloween season!) horror and crazed killers are what I want. In addition, I came to this one off the back of Trick or Treat, so anything was bound to be a disappointment.

That said, it is a nice book. There's not a lot of suspense in it - I think any reader could have worked out early who the bad guy is - nor many chills, but it's nicely written with a very appealing heroine. Megan is shy and dreamy, so when she first sees a ghost in her mirror she thinks she's imagining things. After all, three of her friends were in a terrible accident that day and she's under a lot of stress. She's not dreaming, though - hanging out in her mirror is Juliet, a girl Megan's age who drowned in the lake. She begs Megan for a chance to take over her body for a week, so she can experience life again, and Megan - the soft-hearted sort - eventually agrees. But she spends the week worrying, because someone is attacking her friends and family, leaving taunting pictures for her as clues as to who will be next. And Juliet isn't acting like someone who'll be gone in a few days.

I didn't like the whole picture thing, it felt random and unnecessary to the plot. The reasons behind the attacks on Megan's family and friends were never explained to my satisfaction, particularly since none of them were killed and few of the "accidents" were serious. But the writing was good enough to keep my attention, and Megan is a fun heroine. Even if she did make the unspeakably stupid choice to swap places with a dead girl. (Don't. It never goes well.)

Verdict: Lighter than other Point Horror books, with a certain sweetness to it. Good for kids, or for anyone looking for something light and fun.

So far out of the Point Horror rereads, this has been my favourite. Yes, there are plot holes (which I'm choosing to ignore for enjoyment sake) and rather insipid characters who make silly decisions, but overall this had intrigue and mystery and was well thought out. Ended rather abruptly but I suppose that's just the given way for these books.

I read this book a bunch of times when I was younger. Someone recently donated it to my little free library and I am not feeling well today so i decided to re read it. It's an entertaining story, a little sparse on characterization. I guess the only thing I really don't like is how all the teenagers talk like they're from the 50's "Oh that's just rotten!"

Teenager Megan discovers a mysterious presence in her mirror one day. The ghost of a girl called Juliet. Juliet has a strange request for Megan. She begs for them to trade places for a week.
Megan reluctantly agrees but soon starts to wonder if she has made a horrible mistake.

Finally making moves to get through some of my retro books this one was a quick read that was an enjoyable one.
It is rather easy now as an adult to guess what was going to happen but it's written well and I liked it.

Juliet was a nasty piece of work and at times I wanted to shake Megan for even considering trading places with a ghost. I mean, she should have realised it would have disastrous consequences really. But it was good.

Megan is living a carefree life with her friends desperate to ask her friend, Justin, to be her date at her 16th birthday party. After some of her friends are in a car accident, a voice and wispy figure speaks to her from her mirror. Juliet drowned in the lake long ago and now she wants to change places with Megan for a week. What does Juliet really want?

This was my first point horror, I was an adult having far too much fun the first time these came out. This was a quick and fun read, actually a decent light horror story, I found it really nostalgic. I can understand why adults who read these as kids would find them comforting. It is mindless escapism, cliched and cosy, simple tales of creepy goings on with easy stereotypical characters. This is a palate cleanse story for me from the usual more extreme horror I like, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Megan is about to celebrate sweet 16....then she meets Juliet, a teen ghost in her bedroom mirror. Juliet begs Megan to trade places for a week so she can experience life one last time before she finds peace. What could go wrong? Oh, also someone is trying to kill Megan's friends and family. This had just the right amount of cheese.

This review is based upon other Point Horror reads only….
This one had a very slow start, and I was really concerned it was going to take a while to get through, but it soon picked up, and when it did I really enjoyed it. I loved the supernatural elements. This is a point horror I would read again.

I wanted to add some diversity to my pulp horror nostalgia reading, and it just so happens that most of the Point Horror writers were women. I can’t let R. L. Stine and Christopher Pike have all of the glory. First up is The Accident by Diane Hoh. I really wanted it to be better than it was. It had so many great horror elements and themes going for it, from human-ghost body-switching to brutal car wrecks and family secrets. Unfortunately, it came up short with its two main characters. I think the protagonist was intended to be a naive teenager, but the sequence of events just made her seem really stupid. The plot was so obvious that it got distracting. I wanted more tension and some dynamic characters, but they just weren’t there. Maybe that’s me expecting too much from these books, but don’t think so. It’s been done in others and could have been done here.

Score: 1.5

This book was in a pile of old "scary" books I found on the shelves at my parents' place. I couldn't remember the story, though the nostalgia factor loomed large as I read it.

I give it 4* for the way it transported me back to the early 90s. I remember being jealous that Megan had a phone in her bedroom - something I never had at home. I couldn't help but think how different the story would be taking into account today's technology. Cellphones, internet... Still, the plot would largely hold up just as well in 2019 as it did in 1991.

I give it 2* for writing/editing. Everything felt clunky in a way that almost made me give up a few pages into the story. The story had some plot and characterization issues, but mostly it was mechanical issues that made me cringe.

This book is a blast from my past – I used to listen to the audiobook of this title on cassette on my way home from school! I’ve been obsessively trying to figure out the name of the title again off and on for years until I finally asked my brother and BOOM, he instantly remembered it.

I bought it on the Kindle for old time’s sake and it’s as good as I remember – delightfully 90s with Sweet Sixteen birthday parties, landline telephones and a teenage girl trapped in a mirror.
The story is formulaic and comforting, I can see myself reading this book over and over again now I’ve found it again!
