This was a pretty strong 4.5. I almost would have given it 5 stars, except the author sabotaged herself.

This series is probably my strongest guilty pleasure read. Because on the one hand, I am ashamed of how anti-feminist this series can be sometimes. And formulaic. Almost every single book focuses upon a male vampire lead who is handsome, slender, rich, Caucasian (or, apparently Caucasian, at least), mostly beardless, and a "master" vampire. The female leads are a little bit more variable, but they're also typically slender, Caucasian-or-seemingly-Caucasian, somewhere in their late 20s to early 30s, etc. In some of the stories the vampire men change the women into vampires with their consent; in other stories, the women are changed without. The men always have to show off how "alpha" they are, and the women are held captive for their own good surprisingly often.

There are many species in this universe, but for some reason the male leads are always vampires. The romances are always heterosexual. There are two bisexual main characters, but their relationship with each other is still heterosexual. There are never any plus-sized characters, or impoverished characters, or characters with particularly dark skin. There is never a shy, bookish male lead. For some reason the women never seem to want children; even the women who are given a choice about whether they want to be transformed never have a conversation about having a child through artificial insemination first, or adopting a child after.

But, I'm still pretty involved with this series. I love the superpowers. I feel like I can really immerse myself in the story, even setting aside the fact the story is so often formulaic and embarrassingly chauvinistic.

This particular short story is possibly the best installment the series has ever had. The two leads are POV protagonists we have had before in the series, Cat and Denise. Cat is an atypical vampire, and Denise is a quasi-demon. They were best friends before they settled down with their respective vampire husbands. This story ostensibly is about the two women spending time together for a girls' weekend, but then it turns into an action-adventure involving a coven of evil witches.

It's awesome. The magic and the fight scenes? The near-total absence of men? The fact Cat talks about the struggles of parenthood, as she is currently the only female lead (out of nearly a dozen) to actually have a child? Then there is even more of a surprising parenting reveal by the end of the story.

I was thrilled. Best installment yet.

But--

I haven't read any of Jeaniene Frost's book for years. I couldn't get into Vlad/Leila from her Night Prince series, and I haven't even taken a chance with Ian/Veritas books because I worried I would be disappointed... but I LOVE the original Night Huntress series. I LOVE Cat and Bones (and I did love Denise/Spade book, Eternal Kiss of Darkness)

So when I found out (a bit late) that earlier this year, Frost released a Cat/Bones novella, about Cat and Denise having a weekend getaway, I had to buy and read it!

And well, I had a blast!! Cat is awesome, as always, even when she's high on *laugh*. I haven't met that character though, it seemed that he came from Ian/Veritas book (I may have to take a chance on it someday). I loved that Cat and Denise had fun, before their getaway was ruined, of course. Denise was lovely, and I was so excited reading about her plan

Bones and Space were still finger-licking delicious *grin*

AND KATIE!! I hope to read more about Cat and her daughter because Katie sounded like she would grow up amazing as well.

All in all, great novella! OH, and I found out that Bones' would have his own book with his own perspective from all this years in April. YAY!!

PS: That made me realized, I actually had Outtakes from the Grave with me but haven't read it. Maybe I should

This novella was super fun, and it left me wanting more.😭 I truly adore these characters (and series), especially Cat and Denise, they have such a sweet and beautiful friendship.
While it's a short read and not packed with drama, but has a lot of action, it's still a delightful read! i loved to see Cat and Bones sm, and it's lovely to catch a glimpse of Katie too.
I hope the author writes another novella (or a book) in the future about cat and bones again, now that I finished this series I know I’ll miss them.

It was amazing to get another piece of this series. It was a short work, but it held me tight. It had all my favorite characters in it and it felt like home. It was like I was just reading this series yesterday. All fresh and fullfilling, it was on the edge of my tablet reading this adventure not knowing where the outcome would show a favorable result or if it was a tragic turn that I wouldn't expect or see coming.
great to revisit this author and her series.

“I’d never be ready to say goodbye to Bones, even if I had over a thousand years with him. And Katie…How did you begin to say goodbye to your child?”
- Cat

“I’d almost died, plus I had a gruesome supernatural surgery in front of me, but now that I was free of pain, free of a deadly spell, free of the fear that I’d doomed my best friend, and free to go home with the man I loved, I was in the best mood ever.”

I am so happy! My face actually hurt from smiling while listening to this book. A Grave Girls' Getaway is book 7.6, a short novella, from the Night Huntress series. This is one of my favorite series of all time and it has been completed for a while now, so having a chance to check back in with main characters Cat and Bones and side characters Spade and Denise. It is truly like coming home to family, a family you like, again and made my heart happy. As usual, there was plenty of action, adventure, and excitement. I will listen to this book again. I highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy, paranormal, and romance. 6 stars.

A little story that allowed me to "see" Cat and Bones again and that, probably, was useful to the author to introduce a new character, that maybe we will see again in the future, who seems rather stereotyped to me.

Un raccontino che mi ha permesso di "rivedere" Cat e Bones e che, probabilmente, é servito all'autrice per introdurre un nuovo personaggio, che magari rivedremo in futuro, e che mi sembra piuttosto stereotipato.

5 stars - Paranormal/Vampire Romance Novella

This was an entertaining, action-packed novella! Most of the story centers on Cat and Denise, but thankfully Bones has some scenes as well. And I'll take any bit of Bones I can get! Ashael plays a fun role in the story as well, and he's very intriguing and sexy. I really hope Jeaniene Frost has plans to write a book for him!

Oh how I’ve missed Cat.

Forever my favourite character ♥️

Obviously it’s a short novella and it’s not drama filled but it’s still an enjoyable read for all the Cat and Bones fan, and it’s nice to see Katie as well.

A quick, exciting read! A Grave Girls’ Getaway by Jeaniene Frost is a short novella set in the Night Huntress world after the events of Wicked All Night. Cat has had a few years adjusting to being a mom to her daughter Katie, but she’s tired. She worries about her and the life Katie had prior to Cat and Bones saving her. She wants her daughter to have a normal life, to know she’s loved and safe….basically what every parent wants. This worry culminates in her spying on Katie which leads Bones to send Cat off on a girls’ getaway with Denise.

The plot is short and to the point. Cat and Denise are enjoying a weekend away when they come across a coven of witches offering a sacrifice to a water goddess. Cat being Cat cannot let this stand, saves the teenage boy, and gets herself cursed in the process. Now it is up to Denise to save Cat so they can both go home to their families.

I loved seeing Cat and Denise together again. They are so much fun. Denise is one of my favorite characters. The abilities she has from being demon branded are interesting to see in action, and Spade tends to keep her from any harm so she doesn’t get much chance to exercise those muscles. We get to see them here, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Overall, I enjoyed A Grave Girls’ Getaway. It was fun to return to the world and see how it has expanded since the series came to a close. I liked that this was another adventure, yet still stood on its own. If you are a fan of the series, I highly recommend you give this one a read.

It’s great to be back in the world of Cat and Bones. This time Cat has cooked dinner for the family. Dear lord, will everyone survive? Lol. Yet, Cat is worried because her daughter, Katie, is sneaking out to train and she is worried she still has a lust for killing.

Bone suggests that rather than being a helicopter parent that Cat should get away with her best friend, Denise for a girl’s outing. Little do they know but this is going to be an epic trip.

As Cat and Denise arrive at their seaside cottage they decide to go clubbing. However, it doesn’t take long for them to realize their heart just isn’t in it anymore. On the way back to their room, Cat intervenes when she realizes a group of witches and vampires are about to sacrifice a teen boy in a ritual. Of course, Cat steps up to stop the slaughter but it doesn’t take long before she realizes she may be out of her element.

Not wanting to call on their husbands for assistance Cat and Denise call upon the demon, Ashael. This is one complicated mess and there is a real possibility that Cat and Denise may not make it out alive. This is a fun little novella reuniting two of my favorite paranormal couples. The action and plot surely doesn’t disappoints This novella makes me want to read this series all over again!

I absolutely enjoyed this novella. It was fun hanging with Cat and Denise, seeing them finagle their way out of this latest bout of trouble. The story was exciting, a thrill-ride. I was a smidgen disappointed reading this after finishing Wicked All Night though, as I was hoping to get a few questions answered about Ian and Veritas.

A Grave Girls' Getaway by Jeaniene Frost
Narrated by Tavia Gilbert
4.5 Novella Stars

affiliate links

The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost is my favorite paranormal series by a landslide, in fact, it may be my favorite book series in general. So I will take any scraps of Cat and Bones I can, even if it’s a short novella.

A Grave Girls’ Getaway is a quick weekend away with Cat Crawford and her best friend Denise. Bones isn’t in this one a lot, but I still loved it. It is so fantastic being back in this world again! Every time I visit I’m reminded how much I love it and miss the excitement this series brought.

This novella was not short on that excitement. Cat was wound tightly and in need of a vacation away from her new role as a mother. Bones convinced her to take her first girl’s weekend, but she is a magnet for trouble. She thought she was saving a young man, but instead interrupted a ritual by some of the most powerful witches.

I loved everything about A Grave Girls' Getaway! It was a full story with a lot of action for such a short book. My only complaint is Jeaniene Frost’s books are fast reads to begin with, this one was over WAY, WAY TOO FAST. I WANT MORE!

The Narration:
Tavia Gilbert is synonymous to Cat for me, but this one grated on my nerves a bit— there was a lot of fast, exciting scenes, and I found her voice got a little shrill a few times and I needed a break. I still love her as Cat though.

Rating: 4.5 Novella Stars, 3.5 Narration This was a girls weekend, so no sex on page.

Firecrackers of rage went off inside me. "Another kid? What the fuck is wrong with you? If the goddess you worship must have a living sacrifice, chose a murderer or a pedophile like a normal person!"
"That's what I said," one of the nearby witches muttered, garnering her an instant censoring look from Morgana.
"We hold the old ways of offering a pure sacrifice-"
My loud scoff cut her off. "First of all, you're evil. Second, purity is a spiritual state, not a sexual one, and third, wow are you dating yourself as an old, out-of-touch vampire if you think 'teenager' automatically means 'virgin'."

I'm so proud of myself to finally finish this series 😅 I have such a strange relationship with it, I don't REALLY like it, but... I find it highly entertaining at places. I could have definitely spent my time better, but... who cares about effectivity, right?
1. The storyline of this novela was kind of... boring, but that's fine, I guess...
2. I now realise that one of the reasons I enjoy this series so much, is Cat being a bisexual icon. No one can convince me otherwise! No straight person would assure us that she is straight this many times while casually admiring looks of other women, like... this is a fine specimen on bi-denial... (and kind of leads me to a conclusion that Frost might be in bi-denial, but I don't want to speculate about real person's sexuality). It would be especially nice, since Frost already written bi character that I love, but is all bi-stereotypes-incarnated, so it would be nice to see a bi woman in committed heterosexual relationship to just accept being bi. I'm shutting up now... I know I'm possibly the only one who cares about this...
3. I also quite like Frost's attempts at feminism. They are not always the best (I'm still not sure how I feel about the "you don't deserve a vagina" comment...), but... I absolutely loved how she took a stance against virginity sacrifice/virginity magic in this piece, because it's something I find highly problematic at least...

Overall, this was a nice closure to the series. I know there will be one more Bones' book and we'll see what will Frost come up next. I'll probably read it... not completely sure why though 😂

When a fun couple of days away with her bestie turns into a fight for their lives...well, that's actually pretty normal in Cat's world. Sure, this time it wasn't the usual suspects trying to kill them, but dead is dead, amirite?!?! Except dead isn't really dead when it comes to these guys.

Anywho. Cat and Denise are trying to have some girls' only time when Cat stumbles onto something dark and dangerous. Cat being Cat, she can't walk away when someone needs her help. So she jumps in with both feet and a lot of attitude and suddenly she's neck deep in a whole lot of danger.

Seeing as how I'm deeply invested in Cat's world (and all the wild adventures she ends up in), I THOROUGHLY enjoyed watching her trying to battle her way out of this one. It takes a few friends in low places, plus the combined might of Cat, Denise, and their honey bunnies to get the job done, but they did it. It was messy and dangerous and a little on the wet side, but they got it done. *thumbs up*

Side note, I really hope that we see more of Ashael in the future.

Even with Cat and Bones not together thru the entire novella, it was a great read. I love this series. Cat is still a badass and Denise also can now claim that title with the fact she became a shark! LOL

Loved Bones and Spade showing up at the end. Cat did need his help but still is totally badass. The whole, "Who else wants to tell my wife that they won't help her?" Was awesome, as well.

And also, Ian not responding to Denise's urgent messages for 3 days. LOL

We get a Katie and Cat bonding scene and I want more.

Great novella and I want another one!

"You and my mom agreeing. Is it the apocalypse again?"

Always a pleasure to return to the Night Huntress universe, whether it's a whole book or like in this case, a novella. And whether they have to fight vampires, demons, witchs or any kind of creatures, you know Cat is going to do it with humor, no matter how dangerous it is.

Well that was fun. I wasn't sure what to expect from this little novella, but I loved seeing Cat and Denise on a girls getaway. Which of course quickly devolves into witches and sacrifices with Cat unwilling to back down. Things aren't easy for her this time around and for a quite a bit of time things looked bleak, but a way will always be found and the ass kicking can begin. :) Loved seeing the mom side of Cat as she tries to relate with her daughter.

A nice catch up with characters I've loved (and forgot about). Makes me want to re-read Night Huntress series. This reminded me of the Trueblood season when Eric was cursed by witches. Cat and Denise are in for it with a coven, but their husbands to the rescue. Also loved the final scene with Katie.

It's cute, and fun, and a little bit crazy.

That bit of feels at the end between Cat and Katie was precious.

And I just love Denise. She's a criminally underrated badass.
