THE WORST BREAK-UP EVER . . . COULD BE THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO HER
Lizzy Spellman has been dumped. At a party. While wearing a Henry VIII costume. By the man she thought was The One. Someone even filmed it, so now she's a massive YouTube hit sensation too.
Just when she thinks things can't get any worse, she meets the rudest, most cynical man in the world, and gets a new mission in life. To prove him wrong.
Woman gets dumped and cries and moans a lot while getting drunk on ALMOST EVERY PAGE and keeps saying 'I don't need a man' while the whole book is about needing a man to cope in life. Really a terrible story.
'It Had to Be You' is a light and easy story, nothing too special and without major twists or extreme ups and downs. It has a nice pace and is quite humorous sometimes.

If you're a hard core chick lit fan, you've probably at least heard of Jo Carnegie if not read her novels. This is also a book by Jo, but written under the pen name Ellie Adams. To this day, though we follow each other on twitter, I have no idea what's the reason for writing under a different name when this book perfectly falls in the genre she was previously writing. But anyway, could be some marketing stuff, and that's really not as important as the awesomeness of this book.
I read it months ago, but due to my busy schedule and being preoccupied with my PhD, I never got round to review it. But as the saying goes - better late than never, so here I ago.
Lizzy Spellman has just been dumped, at a costume party while wearing a ridiculous Henry VIII costume. As in every rom com, of course she thought that this guy was the one and is heart broken and utterly humiliated. It's not just the dumping part in public, but someone actually filmed this lowest point in her life and without wanting to she turns into a sort of celeb everyone recognizes as the girl who got dumped.
She'd rather just hibernate till people forget about the whole humiliation video, but life goes on. And Lizzy does try to move on, changing and growing on the way.
I really really loved this book. First off, we've seen this in so many chick lit novels yet it never ceases to be interesting and even funny, girl gets dumped, girl is hurt, girl changes for better. However, that whole video thing was such a nice addition and the reason for making me laugh out loud even after just couple of pages. The way people react at this kind of humiliating situations really says a lot about them. Lizzy is not a loser, she's neither a victim, she's this super fun, funny, charming girl who's dealing with the situation making a lemonade when life gives her lemons. This is what makes this story so brilliant, you can connect to Lizzy and root for her. She's an adorable character you can't help but love.
I was also rather pleased with the side characters, who are wonderful addition to the story, completing Lizzy's character and making this book, lovely as a whole.
The point is, no matter under which name the author goes by, whether it's Ellie or Jo, she's brilliant and rules the chick lit genre. I can totally see this novel made into a movie, it would really be a fantastic rom com, though honestly I can't think of a casting right now. Lizzy is such a unique character and the author did such a brilliant work in plotting her, it's really hard to say which actress would do it justice. Do I recommend this book, YES, or as Simon Cowell would say, BIG FAT YES! If you're looking for a great book to spend a pleasant day with, or for something to cheer you up on these cold, grey days, this is the book for you. It's funny, heart warming and so so charming. I'm certain it will leave a huge smile on your face!
It was a lovely journey in Lizzy's life . A very long full of ups and dawns one too ! Literally the first half was a little bit boring , she will got wasted with her friends every night like 24/7 hangovers .. then go to her work first thing in the morning !!!! Is it even possible to do that ? Then her love interest come to her life and made my day ! They were so very cute together .. it was fun how things work good for all of the characters in the end. Its a nice read for any chic lit fan ;)
The story follows Lizzy Spellman from London, who attends a fancy dress birthday party where she gets dumped pretty nastily by her boyfriend. Of course someone films it and Lizzy ends up being a massive hit on Youtube. As if this wasn't bad enough, her job in a PR firm and their more or less serious clients annoy the hell out of her as well. As she is instructed to promote a horribly stupid product, she makes contact with cynical, grumpy Elliot. She doesn't really like him at first, but as they exchange more e-mails, and accidentally see each other in person, a sort of friendship starts to blossom...
That was a nice and easy read. Typical chick-lit, without any hidden disasters or anything. I really liked that! Lizzy and Elliot (despite his bad moods earlier in the book) were wonderful characters. Also Poppet, one of Lizzy's best friends was a very loveable girl. Her other best friend Nic was an annoying bitch sometimes but she was also OK I guess. What I didn't like about Lizzy was her constant drinking. She permanently drinks too much and wakes up with the headache of the century and so on and so forth. That was a bit annoying at times, and quite stupid, really. But other than that I really liked her and her friends and the story as a whole. ♥
Lizzy Spellman is one of the funniest chick lit girls I've had the pleasure to accompany on her disastrous journey to happiness. We clicked on the first page when Lizzy is in this aweful costume and is called on stage to sing karaoke in front of a horde of wedding guests and get dumped by her boyfriend. And then a YouTube video of the whole scene goes viral. What a terribly awkward start to the story! Of course I was instantly hooked and couldn't wait to find out what else Ellie Adams had planned for her heroine.
Lizzy and Elliot are not your typical adorable chick lit couple. He's a grump. She is disappointed in men after being dumped in front of a huge crowd. The two are pretty different characters. Elliot is always disapproving and hesitant at letting people into his life, whereas Lizzy is bubbly and outgoing. You think Lizzy can break his shell?
IT HAD TO BE YOU is like a quick-witted and modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. He seems so rude and unapproachable at first and Lizzy is instantly convinced that he's stuck up. Still, between misunderstandings and confusions a solid and beautiful friendship develops between the two. Their friendship makes up a good part of the story until they finally get a chance to test their romantic feelings for each other. Which was a welcome change to the love stories that feel too intense too fast. I could really use a sequel to the story so that I can find out what happens next in Lizzy and Elliot's love story. Friendship in general is a brilliant aspect of this book. Poppet and Nic are Lizzy's best friends. And they are such fun friends who made the story a much more enjoyable read. As much as you want a happy ending for Lizzy, you want it for her friends, too.
Like many others of my favourite chick lit books IT HAD TO BE YOU is set in London. This very urban and colorful setting holds so many possiblities. One of them is Lizzy working in PR. And the PR work was hilarious. Usually, I'm not very into reading so much about what characters are doing at work every day, but Lizzy's job experiences really gave the book an uplifting and warm spirit. Lizzy's work scenes were probably my favourite part of her story. I couldn't count how often I texted a friend to share the hilarious jokes. They are too good not to be shared!
4,5/5 ****/* IT HAD TO BE YOU - This has to be it, your next chick lit read!
Lizzy Spellman is a character you want to meet. She's funny. She's lively. And I could relate to her really well. Lizzy's awkward and hilarious situations, and secondary characters with actual, outstanding personalities make IT HAD TO BE YOU an especially memorable read. I read Ellie Adams' new book in one sitting while on vacation.
Oh my... I will never listen to the library's clerk's recommendations again. I DON'T like chick-lit and I don't like predictable stories, and this was both of them. Average, "fat" girl is dumped by her boyfriend but finds love again and, of course, he's a rich, gorgeous-looking man. The cover of the book is misleading, though. The story has nothing to do with what it promises you'll find inside.
I finished it because it was a rainy Sunday and I had nothing else to read. And I'm being very generous when I give it 1 star.
When I heard about It Had To Be You, I thought it sounded liked SUCH an interesting read, and I was even more excited when I knew who had written it - none other than popular author Jo Carnegie who I've never read myself, but who is super popular. The novel is actually being published under the pseudonym of Ellie Adams - as it's different to her Churchminster series. I've never read any of Jo's books, so I was quite excited to start with It Had To Be You, with it's fantastic strap-line, "Has love walked past you today?", and it's bright yellow cover, I couldn't wait to get stuck in.
I actually felt a bit mis-led with the It Had To Be You synopis - it makes it sound like Lizzy meets Elliott and is determined to show him love is possible, but forgive me if I'm wrong but there's never a conversation of the sort between Lizzy and Elliott. Elliott is never cynical about love - sure, he's heartbroken, but he's not cynical about finding love again, and I just felt a bit disappointed that that wasn't the purpose of the novel. Because it sounded fun and interesting, and I like when a bubbly personality like Lizzy takes on a miserable, serious, quiet fella like Elliott. Elliott is barely in the novel for the first 100-200 pages, I wanted a few more of those snarky email exchanges, the two we got between them were fun, so more would have been a nice bit of lead in, for when they become friends (which happened in rather bizarre circumstances).
It was an interesting novel, I liked seeing Lizzy's relationship with her best friends Nic and Poppet and I liked hearing about her job as a PR, and I felt she was vastly under-appreciated by her boss. She was practically running the joint. I was a bit disappointed romance wasn't the forefront of the novel, but it allowed us to see other areas of Lizzy's life, and so I never really felt the chemistry between Lizzy and Elliott. I wanted to, but the way they became friends just seemed to bizarre, and a teensy bit forced. As I said previously, if they'd kept up their email contact, instead of two random meetings (one being at Elliott's family home!) I perhaps would have been more receptive of their counsellor-sort-of-friendship they end up with.
I really enjoyed It Had To Be You. Lizzy was such a warm, fun main character and she made me laugh many times. I love that she was happy to dress up as a tomato for a PR pitch, even if it was for the wrong pitch! And I loved the opening scene in the Henry VIII costume! I wished the whole viral thing had been exploited more, I'd have loved for Lizzy to become an insta-celeb, considering it happens these days, and it would have been quite fun, too. Overall I enjoyed the novel but there was more I wished had happened, I wished there was more from Elliott, so we could see him underneath his stiff exterior. But I loved Lizzy's friends - they're the types of friends you dream of having and they were almost always there for Lizzy, whenever she needed them and it was wonderful to see their fabulous friendships! Ellie's a fabulous author, and I can see why she's so popular and I can't wait for more under this new pseudonym! This review was originally posted on Girls Love To Read
“Lizzy Spellman has been dumped. At a party. While wearing a Henry VIII costume. By the man she thought was The One. Someone even filmed it, so now she's a massive YouTube hit sensation too.”- doesn’t that want you to read more!!!!!! I can’t imagine a worse scenario for me! This is my favourite type of genre- my ‘go to’ books to enjoy a few hours. I loved the characters in this book- they are all so fun to read. Lizzy is so well written and you really warm to her. You meet her family, friends, colleagues and of course ‘the rudest, most cynical man in the world’. You are left wanting to know what will happen next. The best sort of book keeps you turning the pages long after you should have put the book down. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see more by Ellie Adams.
Thank you to Net Galley and Random House Uk for the chance to read this lovely book.
'It Had to Be You' is your typical, light-hearted chick-lit. The lead character, Lizzy is your every day Bridget Jones who seems to experience dilemma after dilemma - topped off with a huge amount of alcohol! As with the majority of chick-lit, you are taken on a journey through bad break ups, awkward dates and 'girly gossip' but despite the cliche, it was an absolute pleasure. This was an extremely easy read - very fluffy, uplifting and funny - and I was sad to see this is the only book Ellie Adams had written so far! I would like to see more of her. This certainly made a change from a lot of the doom and gloom I read!
The Worst Breakup Ever.... But it was the best starting of Lizzy Spellman's(The Main Character) life.
It was basically my first chic-list, but it was awesome, the problem faced by a girl in her love life as well as in her professional life defined very elegantly. Elliot Anderson, one of the cynical male, but the love has turned that hard rock in melting candle. I think this book deserves a read.
All the things about story are well settled, there's no loop in story, writer explained it well and cover all the sub stories.
Ellie Adams is actually the pen name of one of my favourite authors, Jo Carnegie! I believe she chose it as Jo Carnegie writes cotswold bonk-busters, whereas Ellie Adams writes big city romances - as long as it gives me more books by her, it's fine by me!
It Had To Be You is so funny, from moments like Lizzy headbutting Justin after being dumped to little remarks about how her mum had kicked Lizzy's father with her stiletto and the wound went septic. The dynamic between Lizzy and her mother reminds me of Miranda and Penny in the TV show Miranda, which is a compliment!
Also, this is enemies to lovers done right! Lizzy and Elliot hate eachother because of petty arguments and awkward interactions and eventually fall in love. I've read one too many books where abusive but forgiven is masquerading as enemies to lovers, so this is very refreshing.
There's a Brontë reference in chapter 13!
The representation of a character with clinical depression is quite worrying . . . but I think those weird traits were supposed to be the character and not the depression. Lizzy saying she's "not that kind of girl" and describing a photo of Amber as "Lolita-esque" doesn't sit right with me either.
Once again, every book I've read from this author is an undoubted five out of five stars!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
1. The novel's distinctly London "voice". There were a few references which I thought outsiders (people who don't live here) wouldn't get but I liked that they weren't explained. It made it feel genuine.
2. When the couple finally do get together, it's really worth the wait!
What I didn't like:
1. It took a while for the romantic interest to show up and then it took FOREVER for anything romantic to happen between them. The optimist in me wants to call this a "slow-burn" romance but the greedy-for-romance reader in me calls this bullshit! Let's just call it personal taste.
2. I didn't understand the point of the viral "break-up" video. I thought it would play a bigger part than it did but all the things that "went wrong" (like when Lizzy enters the dating pool again) could've happened even without the viral video. I'm going to chalk this up to injecting a little bit of fun into a modern romance.
Summary: Despite waiting so long for the romance to happen, the writing did keep me entertained until then.
It's been a long time since I've read a lot of chick lit, and I'm disappointed that every title I pick up is either average or terrible. 'It Had to Be You' is the former. It's repetitive, with the first half of the book dedicated to Lizzy getting over her break-up and constantly getting drunk with friends. I felt as though I was getting liver damage just from reading. There's only a certain amount of wine-drinking that I can stomach reading. Ideally, this book should have been less than 300 pages, so I can't understand how it was edging towards 500. Half of it isn't even relevant. The love story itself is pretty typical, though there was a twist that I didn't see coming, but I'm probably going to have forgotten every detail of this book within a week. Forgettable.
I have to hand it to Ellie Adams - she knows how to write to a formula. I'm not a fan of this genre, but occasionally I allow myself a bit of 'light' reading and this one was a book club read, otherwise I wouldn't probably have come across it. The problem is credibility- you have to suspend disbelief while reading this. Would an FT journalist be on the mailing list for a PR product? Possibly. The Email exchange between the 2 main characters is believable, but the working into a plot and the slow burn are not in my view credible. The ending is very believable and well written and there is some good characterisation. So I have awarded it 2.5 stars and rounded it down to 2, on the basis that it could have been developed into so much more.
i like chick-lit and this didn't rise to the occasion. It started out funny, hitting all the necessary points then it seemed to fizzle in the middle with a lot of filler scenes. The synopsis is largely misleading if you actually read and finish the book. Everything was rushed towards the end and the funny just started to be methodological. If you want a fast, nonsense read then this is probably what you want but I've read better.
This was an okay romantic comedy. I think a lot of energy was spent trying to make funny things happen throughout and made other parts of the story lack somewhat. Parts did make me laugh but it just missed the mark for me really. There was a mistake in my edition. I am just not convinced much research was done for basic things like pheasant hunting and Aylesbury is the last place a top PR company would choose to promote a new product.
It made me laugh SO hard. Seriously. At the beginning it was a bit slow. I saw not development (who goes out and drinks every single night with their friends?), but kept reading cause it was hilarious. It didn't disappoint me at all in the end. If you are looking for a good laugh and sexiness too, this is a must. Oh, and it definetley reminded me of Bridget Jones, which cannot be a bad thing.
3/3.5ish.... if this book had been edited down (like, the entire first half of the book), i would have rated it even higher...but the first half was pretty slow and the love interest didn't really enter the story in a major way until about halfway in, and then it really picked up. i enjoyed the author's writing and the characters and it was just a light fun read
This is chick-lit, baby! Even the cover is a bit misleading, but still, it was hilarious and an easy read! Loved it!😅🫶📖
Lizzy Spellman's dealing with the world's worst breakup, dressed as Henry VIII, no less. The whole thing's caught on camera and blown up on YouTube.
Lizzy crosses paths with a guy who's basically the poster child for cynicism. No fairytale meet cute here, these two collide like two stubborn rams. But it's entertaining as heck.😅
I think It Had to Be You goes beyond the laughs. It's like hanging out with Lizzy and this guy who's got sarcasm down to an art. They're not the usual lovey-dovey couple you'd expect. It's more like a classic comedy skit where things don't quite go as planned.
If you're up for some chick-lit read, dive into this one.😅👌🏻 It's like a breath of fresh air, a light-hearted escape from reality.📖😍
I loved this book! Would be a pleasure to read again and again! So cute and funny. The characters came alive as they weren’t perfect and they had flaws but Ellie made us love them all. Would recommend if you like a sweet, funny romance.
This must have been entertaining enough, but nearly instantly forgettable, too. I know this because I'm writing this a month after I finished the book and I only have a vague memory of what happened in it.
This book started at the 50% mark. I liked the main character, but feel as though she could have been more fleshed out. Things took far too long to progress and the beginning was way too slow paced and boring for my taste.
This is my third time reading this book and it gets better each time, I'm still yet to find a modern day chick lit romance novel that is better than it. Most definitely deserves a read!
