Choices: To the Hills and Back Again

Rate this book
From the star of MTV’s The Hills and The Hills: New Beginnings, a candid and insightful reflection on aughts tabloid fame, the powerlessness and loss of self in toxic situations, and the life-changing power of even our smallest choices.

If you know Audrina Patridge from one of the most successful reality shows ever, MTV’s The Hills, you know that she doesn’t pull punches. For years, she hid the challenges she faced, but now, she’s finally sharing her full story for the first time—and it’s not a neat little story, tied with a bow. This is the unvarnished truth about being young and carefree in Los Angeles, filming The Hills, and getting access to the most exclusive parties, decadent restaurants, and VIP clubs. It’s also the unvarnished truth about darker days, when she lost her confidence, her voice, and even her self-worth as she was pushed to the brink of losing almost everything.

Just like The Hills, Audrina is back and better than ever. In Choices, she’s baring it all: the nearly soul-crushing struggles, the beauty of finally reclaiming her power, and the incredible experiences and behind-the-scenes details of The Hills. This is the story of an eighteen-year-old girl who took a chance and had the experience of a lifetime on a reality TV phenomenon that made her a household name and tabloid regular. But it’s also the story of a thirty-six-year-old woman and mother who regained her voice after years in a series of unfulfilling and even toxic relationships. Deeply insightful and wonderfully entertaining, Choices is a story of redemption, renewed strength, and reckoning with the choices we make.

I read this because I was a huge fan of The Hills. I’m not into reality tv at all but when I was younger Laguna Beach & The Hills had me; I was hooked.
I enjoyed learning more about Audrina and her life and I also loved how she shared her faith. She’s been in a lot of toxic relationships and she shares that in the book and how she overcame them.
Overall it was enjoyable but I didn’t love it.

Hands down this is one of the most poorly written books that I've read in a long time. I'm going to refrain from rating this book because once again it would not be in favor of the book and I don't necessarily feel comfortable placing a star rating on Audrina's experience.

Honestly, I was interested in picking up Choices: To the Hills and Back Again because I grew up watching The Hills. I remember having weekly watch parties in a friends dorm room my freshman year of college so I could keep up on the latest drama. Of course, as I got older I realized that the show wasn't as "real" as we thought and a lot of the drama was manufactured to keep viewers like me coming back for more. Nevertheless, when I found out that Audrina was publishing a book that would detail her experience on the show, I came running.

First, let me say that I admire Audrina for having the courage to share the details about the abuse she endured while being married to Cory. As someone who has experienced this first hand, I can honestly say that it's never easy to tell that story. Additionally, I can only imagine the assumptions that social media and the tabloids made once her attempt to get a restraining order and her divorce were made public. Any time that someone is forced to relive those traumatic experiences, my heart aches for them. While many will see her decision to continue to stay in the relationship stupid, I understand the psychological break down that happens during abuse. From the outside, it appears so easy to be able to walk away; however, it's never that simple and becoming accustomed to the abuse only makes it worse.

With that being said, Simon and Schuster should be damn ashamed of themselves for letting this get published without further editing. Audrina's gift is not storytelling and some heavy editing could have eased some of the horrible writing. Instead of this reading like a cohesive narrative, readers are often thrown through various periods of her life detailing people and life in such a repetitive manner that I came close to DNF'ing this book 2-3 times. Some of the parts were extremely confusing because I think that Audrina is still confused about how she feels in regard to certain people and events. On one page she said that the production team behind The Hills was manipulative and couldn't be trusted and then a few pages later, the production team was like family. Then it was the repetitive text. Audrina would tell readers something only to repeat the same thing a few pages later. For example, after her divorce from Corey, Audrina lets readers know that she moved into her parents house for 6 months and then rented an apartment. LITERALLY 5-6 PAGES LATER SHE SAYS THE SAME THING. I thought that I was losing my mind. It is clear that an editor did not spend time on this book and it was pushed because of who was writing the book and not the content. It was embarrassing for me as reader that this book was actually cleared for publication. It read like juvenile diary entries in some places which I feel wasn't what she was going for. It amazed me that Audrina spoke so much about getting used and for some reason I feel like she was taken advantage of with this book deal and it's publication.

Honestly, I wouldn't go into this book expecting to learn much about The Hills. There is about 50 pages of that content and then the rest of the book focuses on Audrina's relationships with exes. I'm guessing that writing this book was cathartic for her, but I can tell that she truly didn't have enough to say to write a full length novel. I applaud her for taking on the task of being a single mom with so much positivity and courage. I'm there right now; however, this book was a complete disaster. Writing isn't meant for everyone.

My thanks to the publisher, Gallery Books, Simon & Schuster, for a copy of this book. This is a heartfelt and heart warming memoir written by Audrina Patridge of The Hills fame. Its the story of her growth through parenthood, marriage and divorce, written in hopes that her hard learned lessons might be helpful to others. I think that this will be good advice to others and I thank her for sharing her story.

This book should have been called choices: the rotating carousel of men. All she talked about was men. Name dropping the men who were interested in her, the men she dated, and her ex husband. There was almost nothing about the hills in here, and nearly nothing of substance. Honestly, probably in the top 3 worst books I’ve read.

Shallow and at times infuriating memoir from a sweet but dumb reality TV star. Patridge's book is as fake and image conscious as The Hills, with her pretending to reveal her true self but instead spending almost the whole book dumping on ex-boyfriends. In the process she actually shows that she was the idiot to stay with the same abusive, cheating guys over and over and over instead of learning the first time to move on.

It's a tiny 200-page book with lots of white space, and about 120 pages of it is wasted on her loser ex-husband Corey Bohan. He is abusive from the start but she refuses to be anything but the forgiving girlfriend who takes the nutcase back when he spends three days straight sitting on her doorstep. Then that scene happen a bunch of more times and you have to ask yourself, "What's wrong with her?" She gets pregnant with his child in the midst of his regular cheating and violence, yet she stays with him and even marries him despite every red flag possible up to the day of the wedding.

While she hilariously concludes the deceptive memoir saying, "I'm not writing this book to put anyone down or speak poorly of them," it ends up that this is an expose of horrible Corey Bohan and how Audrina Patridge doesn't know how to be woman enough to stand up for herself. She looks for sympathy but instead there's no support for someone who chooses to place herself in an abusive situation over and over, then allows her baby to have the same thing happen. It's disgusting.

I also found it odd that nowhere in the book does she mention any kind of drug usage or abuse, especially by her obviously high boyfriend/husband. This is a whitewashed version of her life story and holds back on dirt from her real relationships, trying to paint most of the guys wonderful but never showing any real reason to think that.

If you're looking for inside stories on reality TV you won't find much. She does make vague statements about how she was cast on The Hills and how she didn't get along with everyone, but there is so little detail you could find out more online. Regarding the big topic of whether The Hills was "real or fake," she devotes a whole three paragraphs to saying it was both. Yawn.

At some point near the end, where she crams the last five years of her life into a few pages, she alludes to her Christian faith but gives no details other than showing up for church. She does say her pastor mentioned the "power of choices...and I've held that message close to my heart ever since." Problem is that sermon came before she was pregnant and married, and long before all of the continued abuse she chose to remain in, so she obviously didn't put into practice what she heard.

Thus the title of this book is ironic--she did nothing but make bad choices! Her #1 problem is that she fails to understand that she is responsible for her own choices, sticking around for the abuse that she and her daughter suffered. Audrina Patridge is not a good role model and this memoir is as flat as the modeling photos on the cover.

Wish she'd had a ghost writer.. I enjoyed her honest story, that put things into perspective for me, as a fan of Laguna Beach and The Hills. However, the way she told the story is very repetitive, and offers minimal literary depth. Overall, a nice read, but not more than 2,5 stars..

Reality TV was a bit of a guilty pleasure thing for me in the beginning of the 2000s, and The Hills was one of my favourite shows. So sometimes I check to see what the actors have been up to and found out that Audrina wrote a book. I did not expect anything brilliant, and it really wasn't. It was nice to hear her side of the story but she isn't a good writer. Loads of double information, many things repeating, etc. She could have used some help with writing and editing. Other than that, it was an entertaining & quick read.

Huge fan of the Hills and thought it would be fun to dive deeper into that world. When I was young I would envy them and their lives. Now that we are all old, I see it as it is… a produced and made up reality. First half of the book is so un-relatable with the struggles of partying and celebrity. I just couldn’t sympathize at all.

I do think she highlights the importance though of mentally abusive relationships. As a survivor of one, I still think it is a topic that is not talked about enough and could see this helping bring clarity and light bulb moments to women currently in the situations.

Fans of The Hills will not be disappointed with this deep dive into Audrina's time on the show. I didn't know much about her life after the Hills so it was interesting to hear what a hard time she had in her marriage. Open and honest, this was a moving, heartfelt memoir about mistakes and moving on to be a stronger person after an emotionally abusive relationship. Great on audio read by the author herself.

Oooooof! I wanted to love this book because I loved the hills back in the day and I’m currently rewatching the series, but it was extremely repetitive and drawn out. Very interesting to hear what Audrina went through with her marriage, but not as much “tea” about the hills as I thought there would be.

I saw this book while shopping in Target one day and was like wow! I didn’t know Audrina wrote a book! I’m a huge fan of The Hills and was excited to read this.

Nope. Now I know why I had never heard of it being released. It’s just bad. I wanted to like it so much but the writing just jumped all over the place and was hard to follow. This leaves you dizzy and spinning in circles.

The book just came off whiney and defensive. Like she only wrote it so she could tell her side of certain situations that were filmed, because this was the only way to be able to defend her actions or explain them. There was also a lot of name dropping of people she could have dated, and talked about opportunities she chose to “pass up on.”

It then felt like the last of half this book was spent trashing her ex-husband and railroading him into the ground. I just don’t see the point of it, much less do I want to read about it. His endless partying and cruel behavior towards her, yet Audrina saying she wanted to get married to have a “family” for her daughter? But then before the wedding and after, she talks about how she doesn’t want her daughter to grow up in the toxic environment caused by Corey. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Very little of this book was about who she is as a person. What her life is actually like. There was nothing about her childhood or much about her relationships with her family. Very disappointing.

The one star goes to whoever figured out the book should not be longer than 200 pages. I would have never made it past that at the way the writing was going. Hopefully I have saved you from wasting your time with this book.

The Hills was always my guilty pleasure of reality tv. My favorite was always Audrina, she's a rock n roller and she's gorgeous. However, I was hoping there was more to her book than a recap of events on The Hill's. Unfortunately Audrina comes off as an airheaded high-schooler. Holding grudges from rumors is childish. Move on, her countless on and off relationships discussed in the book did nothing to show her maturity. All she does is complain. If you want to do something mature and productive go back to school and get a degree and stop living off being a reality star.

The only question bouncing around my mind as I'm listening to the audiobook is: are women in America ok??? Marrying a man, even though he has shown his true face over and over again, just because "raising a kid in a marriage is what she was brought up in" is the most "I'm upholding the patriarchy" thing I can think of.

This book is all about men, men men men, the men she meets, marries, almost gets into relationship with, and not enough about... well, her.

at least the audiobook is short

I was expecting more about the Hills (and less about DWTS), but I still really enjoyed this. It’s mostly about her relationship drama with Justin/Corey. She spills a lot of tea, which I appreciate!

Y’all, Audrina does not hold back in this book and I am here for it. 👏🏻 There were so many times while I was reading this book where I thought, “what if Lauren reads this?!” … “what if Justin reads this?!” among other people. 😏 I’ve always thought of Audrina as being a bit more private with her personal life (granted I’m not the best at keeping up 🤷🏼‍♀️), but she dove deep into her story for this book and I really appreciate it.

Audrina walks us through a bit of her upbringing and family life, her crazy time on the Hills, her tumultuous relationship with Corey, and so much more sprinkled in. I honestly knew maybe 5% about her relationship with Corey, so I was SHOOK at all the details. I’m glad Audrina finally cut ties with him to help herself and her daughter. She’s a strong woman indeed!

You will love this book if you are a fan Audrina or The Hills (and yes she does touch on the Hills reboot)!

Truly confused why anyone that didn’t watch and enjoyed The Hills picked up this book and also rated it. You all need to keep in mind that she isn’t a professional author. She wrote her story. You didn’t have to read it. I personally loved her on The Hills and was excited to read the behind the scenes of her life. She explained so much about what really went on when filming The Hills and I enjoyed those parts. The only thing that annoyed me was how she recycled boyfriends. She had three men that she was serious with and she dated each one multiple times. That got very repetitive but I can’t blame her for putting that in the book as that was her life. So sad that her and Justin didn’t have the relationship I wanted them to have had but hey that’s tv. Her last chapter had some really great takeaways and if anything, that chapter is worth the read.

I feel like I need to defend why I read this book lol. I have no shame in admitting I absolutely love reality tv. The hills was the OG when it comes to scripted reality tv. In my teens I wanted to be just like Audrina so I was excited to read this book and it did not disappoint. Full of the hills BTS, I loved it.

I have read two memoirs lately from reality stars. I think I need to lower my expectations. Obviously, they're not authors or anything, but going into these I just expect to hear something that I already don't know when basically their entire lives have been blasted in the world already (not their fault) or something groundbreaking.

I have always been a diehard fan of The Hills and Audrina has and will be my favorite from the show - so naturally I loved this book. Brought a behind the scenes story that was a short, easy read and provided much needed nostalgia.

So, this is the real Audrina! That is the first thing that came to mind after I finished reading Choices. It's such an insightful and emotional memoir with deep and profound writing.

I grew up watching The Hills and one of my favorites was always Audrina. She seemed cool and edgy and totally not like your typical LA girl. Like so many, I could tell how kind of a person she was, and to see how she was treated on the show by others especially her then-boyfriend Justin Bobby left a bad taste in my mouth. So to read about her struggles with self-worth, confidence, and powerlessness in situations both made some sense and broke my heart.

Audrina told the story of her upbringing and how close to her family she was. She talked about how she ended up on The Hills and her time while she was on the show. And she talked about her personal life while on the show and all the way up until now. There will be readers that are just waiting for her to spill the tea but don't be fooled. Any time that she brings up people or talks about certain situations she isn't doing it to bash others but to show how it helped her on her journey of reclaiming her power and finally learning that's its okay to put her happiness first.

As Audrina talked about her time on the show I saw how she didn't like confrontation or hurting others even though it was almost always required by producers on the show. She learned to just go with the flow putting her emotions and feelings on the backburner. As she went on about her friends and relationships, in particular, her relationships with Justin Bobby and her ex Corey my heart hurt so much for her. Just when you think celebrities have it all you are reminded how they are just humans like all of us. She mentions how she not only put men's needs above hers but she began to lose her power and confidence in the midst of it all. When she wasn't treated right, she swept it aside because she remembered the good in these people. As I was reading, I felt like shaking her to help her see that she is worth so much more than this. But I also took a step back because it's truly easier said than done. When you're in a relationship and in the moment its so easy to get wrapped up in love especially when you face tough times. Even though it was hard to hear about the abuse and trauma she had to go through I was happy to read about her life as a mother. Those moments of her finding out she was pregnant and then taking care of her daughter was a pivotal moment in her life. Her daughter was able to give her the courage to take charge of her life again. She was able to leave a toxic relationship and find herself again. And that is truly beautiful.

I give Choices 5 stars. Audrina Patridge wrote a telling book about personal challenges and growth. Her vulnerability is so courageous and I applaud her for it. To see how far she has come puts a smile on my face. Audrina put in the work and it has paid off. She is a strong woman, motivated, a wonderful mother, and DESERVES HAPPINESS. I look forward to seeing her take the world by storm!

Honestly, this book was a disappointment. I didn’t read it because I thought it would be compelling writing. I read it to learn more about the Hills, but the Hills content is pretty limited. The book primarily focuses on the men in Audrina’s life. There was nothing new in the Justin Bobby chapter and I had read a lot about her abusive relationship with Corey already. I feel awful for what she went through, but the book was so focused on her dating life that I quickly lost interest.

The book also touched on the show she filmed about her family after the Hills. She acts surprised that the show hurt the relationship between her mom and her sister, but hadn’t she just lived through that on the Hills? I was always team LC versus team Audrina, and this book only confirmed that for me.

Going into this, I thought it was going to be silly, not well written, kind of blah, but as my review shows, I was pleasantly surprised!
I loved the Hill's when I was in my early 20's and picked this up to read about backstage secrets and gossip. What I got was a raw, emotional tale of how an abused woman finally escaped he abuser. I'm so happy that Audrina had the strength and support system to overcome the abuse and manipulation she went through.
I also loved that she addressed all the famous people she's been linked to as well as the saga of Justin Bobby.
This book sucked me in and didn't let me go until it was done.

This was an easy read and I definitely learned more about her personal life and relationships but other than that it was pretty repetitive. I feel so bad that she dealt with the emotional abuse from her ex husband for so long. He sounds like an awful person and I hope he got the help he needed. She seems like a genuinely nice person and I hope she finds her happiness!

I absolutely loved The Hills, so this was a fun read. It was like catching up with an old friend, except Audrina has no idea who I am. 😂 Was it the most beautifully written thing I’ve ever read? No. But, I was a fan so I thoroughly enjoyed this look into her life outside of the screen.

I saw so many negative reviews for this book that I went on not expecting much. This book was excellent. I have so much respect for Audrina. So much of her story resonated with me. I was a fan of the show and the reboot. I had no idea she was going through that with her husband. I appreciate her honesty and matter of fact way she told her story.

2.5. Not the strongest memoir, but it was quick and it was interesting to hear her perspective about being in a toxic relationship as well as how real reality tv is.
