What happens when mediums face off?

Spirit-seeing Kat has pretty much overcome her fear of communicating with ghosts. But when she and best friend, Jac, visit the Whispering Pines Mountain House and Kat is challenged to help a deceased medium make her way back into the light, things get a little darker.

From battling off deadly black clouds to fighting with her very best friend, Kat's weeklong stay at the haunted mountain house is anything but relaxing. The question is what will be scarier: facing off against a misguided spirit or her best friend?

Elizabeth Cody Kimmel unleashes this third Suddenly Supernatural page-turner with heart, comic relief, and spirit (literally).

When I saw this book in my queue of things I am reviewing for this neat project by Superiorland Preview Center, I thought I'd knock this one out of the way real fast since it is aimed at a younger audience. I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it. Secretly, I want to check out the first two books and I just might.

This is a story about a girl named Katherine who is a medium--she can communicate with and see spirits. She and her best friend Jac go to stay at a nice musician's conference in the ritzy and historical Whispering Pines Mountain House. Needless to say, there are some restless spirits about.

Ever since I started watching Supernatural on Netflix, I've been gravitating toward books like this. Screenplay writers could learn a thing or two from Miss Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. She is one of those rare authors that can write really great first-person-perspective with humor, personality and still have the story make sense plot-wise. What I loved about this book was...well, quite a lot of things actually.

I loved the friendship between Jac and Kat--it seemed real and it was refreshing to see girls converse, understand and stick together. Too many times young girls are encouraged to be competitive or petty toward one another, which is a real shame. Really, I think there is a place in hell for women who do not help each other. It was nice to see their friendship endure through a hardship and come out stronger than before. It's nice to see friendships lasting because it is, unfortunately, so rare. Especially at this age.

What's also nice is the evolving relationships Kat has with other women in the story; like with Jac's mother, Madame Serena, Alex. She also has a close and supportive relationship with her mother. I love positive mother-daughter stories. Kat even has a change of heart about Ted.

Kat also has a lovable personality. She reminded me of one of my best friends in a lot of ways. She was feisty and funny, but also patient and loyal. And brave--I would have been so scared at some points in the story. There was definite character development, and by the end of the story Kat has grown more comfortable with who she is--which is a beautiful message for people of all ages. More than that, she also realizes she has the power to change things for the better and begins accepting that responsibility.

Suddenly Supernatural - Unhappy Medium is a book I feel confident about recommending to others (unless they are against reading supernatural things for religious reasons, etc.) and I am glad it will be joining my local library's collection soon. Hopefully the other three books of the series can join this one on the shelves in the near future.

The book was better than the last. I'm kind of proud that Kat did something without Jac around. I kind of liked Colin, till he turned into a jerk who's dating someone else.

One thing I hated was referring to Cleo as 'Barbie' or 'The Barbie.' I get it, she's blonde and probably the fakest chick out there, but no need to hate blondes. I have blonde hair and I was a little insulted.

I liked Madame Serena, she brought some much needed relief like Simple Cat and the Simple and Just Cat.

I was surprised at the fact that

This book was a nice break from the city and I enjoyed it. I didn't know what Jac had to be there, unless it was for some drama.

Colin was a plot device. I'll admit it. He doesn't have much of a personality, besides being nice and then turning into a jerk. I kind of liked him, but something didn't set right with me. I'll quote this one girl that had been in my art class.

Girl: *flipping off the table, while talking about some guy* Asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole.

I felt like Kat should've dumped her root beer on him. Is he thirteen or fourteen? I can't tell. That's too young to be leading a girl on, sorry to say.

I can't tell if it's just me, but the book seemed to have dragged on.

The mystery was intriguing. I think the Fox sisters was based on a real life family that did the same thing, besides not coming out and saying that she lied about being a fake medium.

If you enjoy: friendship/mystery/non romance/paranormal/a little bit of drama/some humor/no romance this is for you.

OMG main character has a crush, unfortunately I missed a book between the last I read and this one, so there was some connections to the book I did not read, not that I couldn't follow the book I could. this one a little disappointing, seemed alittle disconnected , but none the less a nice little book for young readers, 8-10. LOL and I am 50. Quick easy read. I just like the two best friends in this series reminds me of my childhood/adult best friend Jackie. We were inseparable.

I love this series - it doesn’t matter what age you are, if you like stories about the paranormal this one should be on your radar. What I love most about this story is how realistic and true to real work in the world of mediumship and psychic phenomena. This author knows her stuff!

The best novel from her yet! This was a really spooky, interesting and unique read in the middle grade category that I truly wish more writers would explore these days! Why are we not hearing more about tween mediums? What happened to this genre? *scratches head, trying to remember what happened to the dystopian genre too*

I don't give five stars away easily. I've said it once and I'll say it again. The Suddenly Supernatural series is so underrated!. Honestly, I feel like the characters could have been re-written into 16-year-old teenagers and I won't bat an eye because this novel's themes are pretty grown up and spiritual. There's mentions of murder, malevolent spirits, protecting your energy, forgiving others, letting go of past grudges in order to heal and of course...plenty of dead people. This novel was a pure joy to read. There were moments that made me cheer for our medium heroine-in-training, Kat. There were moments that made me feel emotional, especially in the scenes where Kat is with her mom and it's clear how much they love each other despite their hardships and arguments. I also loved that we saw a realistic depiction of Kat and Jac's friendship! Both got into their very first fight but then they apologized to each other, once more reaffirming my belief that this is the female friendship of the decade.

The humor was unexpected, the twists were clever and Kat is finally starting to hone into her abilities as a medium! It was a joy to watch her grow and evolve into someone more confident with her identity, not letting others push her around or belittle her for her beliefs. She stands up to a boy who dismissed mediums as "fakes" and she tells him to be more accepting and respectful of other people's beliefs and I was just like..."QUEEN. QUEEN. WHEN ARE WE GONNA HEAR ABOUT KAT'S TEENAGE MEDIUM ADVENTURES?"

(ps: that boy who was ignorant at first had amazing character growth as well and he apologized to Kat immediately after realizing his mistake and he said he had a lot to learn!1 Yasss, we stan)

Why am I, a young adult, so invested in a story about a girl learning she can see dead people and also juggling being best friends with a cello genius and trying to stay safe from evil spirits who want to kill her? Because it's a good story. Because I look up to Kat who is brave enough to help scary ghosts and comfort her friend's scary mom. And right now, in the midst of so much darkness, we need light, just like Orin tells Kat before she begins her very first seance: "Light energy is the opposite of dark energy. It is love, compassion and healing. Use that to drive away the dark" (Heavily paraphrased but you get the idea). :)

I grabbed this book randomly from the library app just to have something to listen to while walking. It turns out to be a youth novel about a girl who has the power to talk with the dead and see ghosts. This is the kind of novel that I enjoy, so I was intrigued.

Since I did not read the first two novels, it took me a minute to figure out that she discovered her “talent“ a couple of books ago while in school. In this book, she and her friend Jac are in a posh hotel for some kind of symposium for musicians, which Jac is. Of coarse, their rooms are haunted, and she has to help the spirits cross over.

All in all, I pretty much liked this book for what it was. I liked the characters and the history of the hotel. What I didn’t like was the voice of the reader (I listened to the audio version). Her portrayal of Jac sounded more like a boy then a girl, and that just distracted from the whole story.

Kat sang medium ingin menolong hantu perempuan tua. Tapi ia sendiri sedang diincar oleh niat jahat si entitas negatif. Sanggupkah Kat kali ini?

Masih bercerita ttg Kat yang ngga tahu sekarang usia berapa. Taunya libur saja terus.

A fabulously old hotel in the woods and a tale of murder....what’s not to love?

Kat is accompanying her best friend Jac to a music conference. When she and Jac get into a tiff, that leaves her with plenty of time to explore that haunted hotel. She meets a ghost by the name of Madame Serena. Turns out they need each other to fight a malevolent dark energy plaguing Kat and other guests.

Perfect for young readers. Not too spooky and the kids seem like real kids. I quite enjoyed it. I haven’t read the first two books in the series but it didn’t matter. It’s an easy series to jump into the middle of.

Konflik Jac-Kat saya suka. Peran orangtua masing-masing juga suka. Pesan yang disampaikan juga kental banget. Ga ada campur tangan ortu dalam menyelesaikan masalah Kat dan Jac, and it's so good. Pemikiran Kat khas anak remaja. Ah, suka.

I enjoyed this book just Jac got on my nerves because of her attitude, but I guess friends stand strong through difficult times sometimes and there are still kids so ... And it was very mature of Kat to give Jac some space and not to overreact. Good read!

Great tween read for boys and girls, very creative and fun reading. I love that the characters are not your typical polished girls. They are very mature for their ages but have moments of angst.

Really great and imaginative series, love paranormal ghosties! The books have a great flow, they are perfect for middle readers. The story always moves at a steady pace and gives you everything you need to solve the mystery. This is great for junior sleuths out there.

Kat and Jac have a great friendship, they have rocky moments like anybody, but they work things out. It really is a great model for kids who have best friends and how to deal with issues. I love the way grown ups explain things without talking down to the kids. They also try to let them work things out on their own.

We do come into a few boy issues in this book. Thankfully it isn't heavy on the crushing. But I will warn any boys the feelings start to get a little gushy every now and again.

I am very happy we are finally addressing the darker spirits Kat keeps encountering. It has been annoying to see them mentioned in earlier books and never resolved. I am hoping the next book takes things back to the school and that dark entity. While it gets a little scary with the ghosts, it never travels to full on horror.

I listened to the audiobooks narrated by Allyson Ryan, who is terrific. She has a real feel for the quirky nature of the characters and it comes through in the voices. She makes great choices in the speed and energy of the read. There could be a little more diversity in the types of voices, a little more distinct would be nice. I really like her style and love the way she compliments this series.

Overall this is a great book, as an adult I was entertained, so I am sure kids will love this. Great pace and fabulous characters. Might not be for folks who are against New Age Philosophies.

Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

I absolutely loved this story. I was a little sad that Jac seemed to be spending so much time with Colin and pushing Kat aside though. Yet, Kat was able to find plenty of paranormal stuff to get into while she was away. In this story the two of these girls were spending time away from home during Spring Break for Jac to attend a conference related to her musical abilities. O

f course Kat runs into a spirit almost immediately. I thought it was funny at first that the spirit thought Kat was the one who was a spirit though. I was happy the two were able to help each other in the end though. The spirit of a medium was able to help Kat banish a dark almost-demonic spirit from the resort, and then Kat was able to help the medium spirit pass on to the Summerland.

Jac and Kat had a fight like all best friends do from time to time, but by the end they made up and Jac decided that she really does want to play the Cello again, it was just that she wanted it to be her decision and not the drive of her mother causing her to do it.

The boy Jac liked turned out to be a bummer. He was the type of guy who likes to think every girl think they are the only one while he is secretly seeing them all. Kat runs into a guy who kind of likes her who she just likes as a friend. However, he and his mother helped her discover the history of the place because it's been in their family for years; and they also helped her figure out how to get through to the medium-spirit. They also gave her some great information on Spiritualists and the Spiritualist movement involving Margaret Fox. This was quite nice information added to the story in my humble opinion. I loved this book and devoured it in about a day!

REVIEW

In this third book of the Suddenly Supernatural series, Kat ventures off to a music convention with her friend Jac and Jac’s mother. The convention is held in a mountain house hotel from the 1800’s. A change in scenery doesn’t bring a change in supernatural activity for Kat. It seems that the spirits follow her everywhere!

Unhappy Medium brings relationship issues front and center. There is tension all around – Kat vs Jac, Jac vs her mother, Kat vs spirit, spirit vs spirit. It is no wonder that Kat is unhappy. I would be too! However, I did like that this part of the story was realistic. It is natural for everyone (medium, spirit, or everyday person) to have relationship conflicts from time-to-time.

My favorite character is Madame Serena. She is a spirit who doesn’t even know she’s a spirit. It’s a crazy story, but she calls Kat, Simple Kat – and she thinks KAT is the one who is a spirit. The whole thing made me giggle.

The Suddenly Supernatural series just keeps getting better. I am looking forward to reading Crossing Over – Suddenly Supernatural #4. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Kat and Jac.

Kat can see spirits. Her friend Jac is a very good musician but is not sure if she wants to keep on playing. Kat, Jac and Jac's mother go to a hotel with some special events for musicians. Kat sees that there is a spirit in her room that is confused and doesn't know it's dead. Kat tries telling the spirit that it is dead and leading it to the right place without being mean. At the same time she gets in a fight with Jac and is left on her own to help the spirit. She tries to find out about the past to help her find out what is wrong and what she can do to help the spirit. She discovers that there is a evil creature in her and Jac's mothers room that gives Jac's mother headaches and makes her feel tired. The evil creature tries attacking Kat several times. In the end Kat and the spirit defeat the evil creature with the power of love. Kat brings the spirit to cross to the world where the dead go. She also becomes friends with Jac again.

The book is fantasy. The story includes magical powers because Kat can see spirits and she can form a bubble to protect her. It includes non human characteristics because there are spirits and there is a evil creature. It includes good vs. evil because Kat and the spirit fight against the evil creature. The story also includes a imaginary place because the spirit goes to a place where the dead go.

In Unhappy Medium, the third book in the Suddenly Supernatural series, there is alot going on. Jac agrees to attend a music conference at a resort- if Kat can come with her. What seems like a great opportunity for the friends to spend time together turns out to be anything but that. It's an old resort and you know what that means. I'll just say boys, moms, murder, Orion, a spirit that doesn't know it's dead and a black cloud (And not the kind you're in when you have a bad hair day, can't find anything to wear and your mother is bugging you.).

Although more complex with a bit more mystery feel, this book is just as straight forward, true to the voice of girls this age, and easy to follow as the previous titles in the series.

Bottom Line: My favorite in the series so far. I haven't found a future title for this series yet, but I have a feeling there will be more so if you want a humorous, interesting, authentic read that includes things you might be dealing with yourself pick up Unhappy Medium and keep in eye out for future titles. What you're not a medium? Everyone has friend problems like Kat encounters at some time. Are you as good of a friend as she is? (sidenote - The author consulted with a reknown medium when writing this series.) For reviews of earlier titles search Suddenly Supernatural.

This is the third book in the Suddenly Supernatural series by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. Our oldest enjoys stories about ghosts and I thought she could relate to the main character, Kat. The story is certainly a bit lighter than some of the other books she's been reading lately.

We listened to the story narrated by Allyson Ryan on audio CD. It was great to take a break from reading aloud and listen to someone else read the story to us.

The story is engaging and dramatic (and not too scary), but some of the teen girl drama was a bit irritating. I liked that the friendship between Jac and Kat is not perfect and that they have to work through issues sometimes, too.

Overall, we enjoyed listening to this story together. It really captures the angst of the early teen and the need to develop strong friendships to help weather the storms of bullying and the vicious banter of those jockeying for popularity.

Aku dihantam gelombang kengerian hebat

By book 3, Kat is feeling pretty comfortable with her ability to communicate with ghosts. This adventure begins when her really only friend Jac askes her to go to a music retreat with she and her mother. Kat thought that it might be fun and relaxing to visit the Whispering Pines Mountain Resort, but that is not how it turned out. Immediately when Kat gets out of the car, she sees a ghost walking toward her. Jac is so fascinated with her ability and constantly questions what she sees and who she is speaking with. When Jac decides that she likes one of the boys in her music group, she abandons Kat. This allows for Kat to be pulled in to helping a ghost that visits her in her room. This was a very fun story that any student would enjoy reading. The author has created Kat to be very likable and engaging. You get pulled into her story.

Tapi giman juga mereka emang belong with each other, jadi ujung2nya baikan.

Gimana engga? Dia yang medium malah dibilang arwah, sama arwah pulak. Hah? Dan Jac naksir cowok trus mencampakkan Kat? Ugh!

My favorite of this series so far. Jac and Kat must face an ordeal concerning their friendship, which only strengthen it. And Kat must face a dreadful challenge as a young medium, an experience which only maturing her as the girl with the second sight. Not to mention the contact with afterlife like she never had before...
