Of Fire & Fae #1

Frozen Hearts and Death Magic

Rate this book
Romance, drama, and mystery abound in this telenovela-inspired upper-YA romantic fantasy for fans of multi-POV stories, forbidden love, enemies to lovers, family sagas, royal intrigue, and mysterious magic.

A forbidden fae kiss could be deadly.

Naia was raised in the shadow of her twin brother, the crown prince, who has iron magic much more powerful than hers. But Naia has wishes of her own. They awaken when she finds a white fae almost dying in the woods. She only heard of them in stories; the dreaded race that razed cities to the ground, killed her grandparents, almost rid Aluria of humans—until they disappeared. Now, almost twenty years later, are they back? Is there another war coming?

But the fae is evasive and secretive—and also alluring and fascinating, more beautiful than anyone she’s ever seen. And then it happens: Naia kisses him—and nothing will be the same again.

In another kingdom, Leah, a necromancer princess, has to find a husband in less than four days, during the gathering, when royals from all over Aluria meet. Her family makes it very clear that she can pick any prince she wants—except one: Naia’s brother. And it turns out that he’s the one; the one who makes her heart beat faster.

Meanwhile, war looms over the land. One of the kingdoms is amassing immense power. The White Fae might be returning. Amidst it all, Naia and her brother struggle with newfound magical powers, family secrets, and most of all, their own treacherous hearts.

Frozen Hearts and Death Magic is book 1 of the Duology Of Fire and Fae, recommended for readers 16 and up.

Between the insta-love, they simplistic yet repetitive writing and the fact that none of the characters had any depth, this is the first big disappointment of the year. Maybe I really wanted to like it because of the cute cover.
Every character is plain and either boring or annoying.
The relationships in this book feel like they were written by a 14 year old who's never held hands with another human being, writing fanfiction about Niall Horan on wattpad at 3am from the family computer in 2012. I could look paat the insta-love thing if the plot was actually entertaining and the "soulmates, meant to be, destined to fall in love" tropes were part of the story, but this... this isn't it.
I mean, I definitely would fuck a hot court member or fae without giving it much thought; instant attraction is normal and should be used more. But this thing is getting out of hand, you guys have exchanged a maximum of 9 sentences to each other, get a grip.
Even the adults in the story spoke like 15 year old mean girls bullying someone in a high school bathroom, created by a showrunner who was homeschooled and had his first date at the ripe age of 26.

Frozen Hearts and Death Magic is the first book in what promises to be an exciting and romantic new series by Day Leitao. Political intrigue, manipulation, and maneuvering create an intense world where the stakes are very high for each character.

I really liked the characters, and their stories and situations drew me in pretty quickly. Fel is my favorite. He and Leah have difficult journeys, and they are both tried in the most terrible of ways. Fel is so honorable and decent and kind, and his self-sacrificing nature, as well as his conflicted feelings for Leah, propel him. Leah is stronger than others credit her for, and it’s a good thing. She suffers so much through the story, and it is intense! In fact, you might want to check the content warnings before starting the book because there are some aspects of the story that could trigger readers.

River and Naia are also well-developed, dynamic protagonists. River has a lot of secrets, much to Naia’s frustration. He is as mysterious as the fae world he takes her to, and it’s interesting to see Naia slowly learn more about him and his kingdom. Naia longs for freedom and independence, and I like that she sees these things in River. However, there are times when she seems almost as trapped with him as she was with her family. I’m eager to see how their relationship develops in future books, as their love story is bound to be as epic as Fel and Leah’s.

Fel, Leah, Naia, and River all have so many expectations thrust upon them, often because of events that happened long before they were born. I like how the family histories and past events slowly revealed. So much of what happened in the past defines their present and predicts the future. It’s so fascinating! Each family has their secrets, some more deadly and malicious than others, and the way they all connect and affect each other creates a well-woven and paced story.

There are two romances in this story, which is great for a romance lover like me. I’m a sucker for a swoon-worthy love story, and there is one in particular that I really liked. Both couples have their fair share of obstacles, and they both struggle with communication, secrets, betrayals, and more. I do wish their romances were developed a bit more, but I have a feeling this will happen as the series progresses. However, it’s clear that both couples care for each other and want a future together however impossible that may seem.

The world-building is another part of the story that I really enjoyed. Each place introduced is so unique and different from the others, and I found them each to be vivid and intriguing. It’s interesting how the magnificence of one kingdom contrasts the humbleness of another and how each had such different goals and motivations. It definitely shows what each kingdom values. I’m really curious to learn more about rivers world. It’s so fascinating, and there’s so much more to unpack.

Frozen Hearts and Death Magic is a great start to the Of Fire and Fae series, and after the twists and turns and surprise revelations, I’m eager to read the next book and see what happens to all four protagonists as their journey continues. Thanks so much to Day Leitao for sending me a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

This one grabbed me from the very beginning!

This book was a delight to read. I can’t say there is a single part of this book that I didn’t enjoy. Everything, from the writing, to the characters, and the plot kept me on my toes and left me eager for more. Like I mentioned, I was sucked in from the very beginning and I had to remind myself to stop reading because I got too caught up to savour it.

For me Frozen Hearts and Death Magic was a nice slow-burn romance nicely woven into a wonderful fantasy plot.

Throne of Glass meets The Cruel Prince in this telenovela style,YA fantasy filled with magic, royals, mysteriously handsome Fae and imaginative world building.

It all started with a kiss.

Naia was raised in the shadow of her twin brother (the Crown Prince), to whom she’ll be advisor when he takes their fathers throne. But Naia has dreams for a future—ones that weren’t chosen for her at birth.

When she stumbles upon a White Fae in the woods (the legendarily feared beings who caused the devastating war that killed naia’s grandparents) she’s worried another war is on the horizon. The Fae is evasive, secretive but also fascinatingly alluring. Naia kisses him and nothing will be the same again.

In another kingdom, Leah (a necromancer Princess) has to find a husband in less than four days. With Princes from all over Aluria gathering, her family make it clear she can have any Prince she wants—except one, Naia’s brother. But he’s the only one she wants.

As war looms across the land, one kingdom amassing immense power—Naia and her brother struggle with newfound powers, family secrets but most of all, their own treacherous hearts.

This was an intrigue-filled and utterly captivating read that I really enjoyed. I’m a sucker for a Fae romance so I knew, as soon as I read the premise that I needed to get my hands on this one… and it doesn’t disappoint! There’s intrigue, ALOT of drama and some good romances to fully immerse yourself in.

I loved Naia who was possibly my favourite character (followed by Leah, who had the most emotional character arc) and truly loved her chemistry with River, which although quite fast was still really enjoyable.

I have to say that the telenovela influences are pretty strong and the revelations that unfold and the drama that ensues is certainly tv worthy. It is told through multiple POVs (Naia, Fel, Ricer and Leah) which is something to keep in mind if you don’t enjoy multi-POV stories.

Overall, this is an entertaining and rather creative take on the YA and high fantasy genre that I feel fans of high stakes drama (and soap opera plot twists) will be sure to enjoy.

I also want to thank the author for the e-arc.

I loved the author's story in The Flights of Fantasy anthology and was excited to read her new book. The story takes place two decades after a war that killed many members from both sides, in which the "true enemy" might have been someone else while somebody innocent might have suffered the brunt. It is a slow-burn romance with fantastical world-building. There are all kinds of magic - from death magic to green magic, and it's interesting to see how the characters use them in times of need. The character development is commendable and the multiple POVs was definitely my favorite part of how the story was told. Getting inside people's heads to know what they think, especially in times of conflict and crisis, is what makes a story all the more interesting. There are twists and turns, a forbidden romance and truths that threaten to destroy beliefs that have been held for decades. The book ends in a perfect cliffhanger. I am happy this is a duology, so I won't have to wait much to know how everything falls into place and ends (hopefully happily). Recommended!

"Say something"
River smirked, "Something"
"Asshole"

What a great story! The characters, the world, and magic were *chef's kiss*! Gotta admit though not usually a huge fan of the back forth on the POV's but for this book, it was just right! We got more incite on what's going on! And more importantly 2 romances!😈😈😈 And Oh my god! That ending was AHHHHH!!! Like I know she did not leave us hanging like that!😱😱😱

Thank you for the eARC!!!

P.s. sorry for posting this just now

"How does it work?"
"Don't ruin the magic. Look. It's beautiful."

I didn't know what to expect when I started this. I just saw the cover and bought the book... which I really liked!
The writing made getting through this really easy as did the story. I would have loved to read even more about River and Naia, I loved the from the start but Isofel and Leah grew on me as well. As to the parents: *deep breath* WHY ON EARTH ARE THEY ALL SO HORRIBLE?! Yeah, in the end, Leah's mother had a 'good reason' but OMG does no one in this world communicate with each other? But all this talk of how the girl might get ruined and how she should just get over with the wedding night but not explaining a single thing about what will happen and... Well, I could rant further but the essence is: the parents in this are awful! And the Ironhold family takes the cake. They're one horrible bunch.
I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series!

The potential is there but the writing leaves a lot to be desired

Honestly the only reason this book doesn't get one star is because I was able to finish it even though I seriously contemplated DNFing at 50ish%. The story is not well paced, world not well described, shallow characters that are very two dimensional and the writing is amateurish to say the least. I am not normally annoyed by less talented writing styles but this one was horrendous. Dialogue between characters made no sense at times and the unbelievable overuse of "But" to begin sentences was incredibly distracting. I was so annoyed I ended up highlighting every "But" to start a sentence that I could find in the book. At page 224 there were 222 Buts. I haven't checked the final tally but I can imagine its in the several hundred range. All I have to say is for the love of everything holy please either add a comma and use "but" to continue the sentence or focus on being more creative. It distracted horribly from a story that actually had potential.

Final tally: FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY TWO "But"s to begin a sentence. Honestly, do better.

When I read the blurb for this book I knew I had to read it but, tbh, I didn't expect to fall so hard for this incredible story and it’s wonderful characters!!! 🤗🥰
As this is the first book by Day's I have ever read, I wasn’t familiar with her writing style, now she’s got a new stalker!!! 😁 #sorrynotsorry
The political intrigue, the different kinds of magic, the variety of supernaturals, the mysterious past that is starting to leak out, the misunderstandings between the MC, the dark plot, the unexpected twists and turns... so many amazing elements that will keep you enthralled the whole time but, mainly, the characters!!!... oh how much I loved Naia, River, Leah and Fel!!! 😍
I'm so looking forward to read the rest of the books in this new and fantastic series!!! 💕

Starting out 20 years after the great Fae nd Human war, our story focuses on Naia, Leah, Isofel, and River. Naia and Isofel are King Azir of Umbraar heirs, Leah the princess of Frostlake, and River a member of the Ancients royal bloodline. As many events happens throughout the story truth's about the neighboring kingdoms comes to light and that the Fae may have never been the true enemy, but King Herald from Ironhold and his ironbringers. Looking forward to what comes next. The left a very good opening for another book.

This was the fourth book I have read by Day Leitao and it did not disappoint. I loved her previous series and was excited when I saw that a new duology was being released. This book has multiple POV's that give the story so much more depth than if I was only told from one point of view. There were some things that could be somewhat predictable but overall there were twists and turns making me need to keep reading. I finished the book in one night. If you have liked any of Day's previous series and liked them, you will enjoy this one as well.

"Love is a strange, wild thing, isn't it ? It gets caged in such a little word."

With gorgeous cover and interesting plot, suffice to say this was an enjoyable read for me!

This story is about love, betrayal, secrets and political issue between kingdoms filled with magical creatures and powers!
The plot is well crafted and pretty well written, although the pacing was a bit too fast in the first few chapters and feel slightly slower in certain parts of the story.

The world building is truly fascinating, but I wish some things were explained in the first few chapters of the book about how the magical power works for different kingdoms.
It took a while for me to get hooked into this story, because the plot progresses slightly in a slower rate before all the pieces started coming together. But once you understand it, you'll enjoy it more just like I did!

As for the characters, they're all likeable and I love reading all four main characters POV since each of them have their own story that will provide information for the readers to understand the main plot.

There's Isofel (Fel), the kind and honorable man with his twin sister Naia, who wants to live free from her brother's shadow. There's also the mysterious Fae that Naia help, River and the beautiful Frostlake princess, Leah who holds Isofel heart and has much more power than she realize.

I thought the romance part between the two couples are going to have an insta love relationship, fortunately it's nothing like that.
Naia and River as well as Fel and Leah romantic relationship have the potential to be more, it just need a bit more time to develop. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of them in the next book!

Overall, this was an enjoyable and entertaining read! With so many secrets in this book, I still have a lot of questions and I'm hoping to got the full answers in the next book!
The ending doesn't have a huge cliffhanger but it does makes you feel excited to know more about it. I'm looking forward to read the next book in this duology!

If you're a reader who loves to read fantasy with slow burn romance and unique magical world building then I suggest checking this one out!

"You know something ? Destroying is easy. Breaking things apart is easy. Splitting is easy. It hurts, but it's easy, it requires no effort. You wanted to go about it the easy way.
Getting together, loving, building things, that's messy, hard, that takes work. Do you want to go about your plans and watch me leave ? It's easy. or do you want to go about it the hard way ?"

This book is Cruel Prince meets Red Queen meets a soap opera meets so much more. Just read it, trust me, just see if you will like it. It has enemies-to-lovers, forbidden love, chosen family, fantasy, adventure, action, mystery, friendship, comedy, witty banter, and lots and lots of drama. With all of that it shouldn't work, but it does.

If you still don't know read the description below in the spoilers below. (It isn't a spoiler, I promise, I just want separate it.)

Oh my goodness- so good!!!

I was given an ebook copy of this book for an upcoming Book Tour I am doing. I couldn’t put it down!! It was so good. It had Love at First Sight, the butterflies in the stomach kisses, elves, magic, plot twists, dragons and so much more. I loved the multiple points of view. I was reading it and I was wondering why we hadn’t gotten one point of view yet and then bam next page it came up. It’s hard to write this without spoiling too much. I loved Naia so much I want all good things for her and more. I found Leah and Fel’s relationship to be the most frustrating. And River I’m not sure about yet but I am rooting for him. I highly recommend this book, I’m buying it in hardcover it’s soo good. And now I shall die waiting for the sequel. What are you waiting for? Go get it!!

Amazing. Just amazing! This is the first book I read this year, and it did not disappoint! A beautiful tale that will suck you in from the very first chapter. A must read. Can't wait for book 2!!

Tropes: forbidden love, enemies to lovers

****DNFed at 24%****

I really, really thought I’d love this book based off the premise and I really wanted to…until I started reading it and had second thoughts.

While it’s not badly written, it’s also not good but rather very mediocre and kind of bland. Also NOTHING is explained which drove me NUTS—I have no idea how the magic works with characters having multiple abilities but also not really, and I had no idea how any of them worked and some had to be hidden while others weren’t and a character was a necromancer but couldn’t raise the dead yet could in her dreams, and a fae used a glamour and a character wondered why they looked different only to see them again and say, “oh, the glamour was off” like they knew that before when it was clear they didn’t, and just…what?!?! SOOOO confusing! Also have no idea how the world works and why do they hate the fae? They started war…I guess? Maybe? Very unclear and sloppily written as it doesn’t seem like the author knows what’s going on either.

And then we reach—dun, dun, dun—the romances. Or should I say, the insta-lusts. *groans* Honestly I have NEVER seen insta-lust done this quick and badly in my life (okay, there was one other book—Towering—but at least that was only one romance, not two!). Like literally in the FIRST CHAPTER a girl saves a guy’s life then demands a kiss from him. Like EXCUSE ME? GIRL!!! A very detailed kiss, I might add, that just had my jaw dropped on the floor as in are you KIDDING ME?! Then fast forward a couple chapters in we have Couple Two who literally meet, exchange about nine sentences, and decide they’re going to get married and kiss a LOT for two people just meeting. Like, my GOSH people, what is this? And DON’T get me started on all the dirty thoughts towards people being undressed and their bodies kissed and I’m out, what even is this?!?!

Bad romances full of lust and nothing else, terribly unclear and confusing worldbuilding and magic systems, and boring, bland characters, three strikes this book is out and deleted from my Kindle ASAP. It does have a gorgeous cover though, I’ll give it that.

‼️Content (up to 24%)‼️

Language: shitty (1); prick (2); pervert

Violence: a water creature tries to eat characters; dead bodies and blood in a dream (not detailed)

Sexual: kissing (not to very detailed); thoughts about characters being undressed and “their bodies kissed”; talk about girls being ruined by boys; medium suggestive hints/comments

Other: magic; fae and a dragon; a character is a necromancer; a character vanished into black smoke; magical abilities; a character briefly reanimates a dead rat

I was given a copy of this eARC for my honest opinion.

• Frozen Hearts and Death Magic was one of those books that I had to put down quite a few times because ugh I just can't deal sometimes. I got frustrated. Not because the book was bad, but because I was sooo invested into the characters, to the book. I highly, highly recommend this to anyone!

• I really really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to buy the printed version because look at that cover 😍 plus the plot is amazing.
-------

It all started with a kiss.

Frozen Hearts and Death Magic is what i would consider medium paced. It wasn't too slow, but it wasn't too fast. The book is being told by multiple POV: Naia, River, Fel, Leah, and Azir (Naia and Fel's father). I am usually not a fan mutiple POV, but the author does a REALLY GREAT JOB at making it all work together. It was so easy to follow.

The book was inspired by telenovela but in a YA romantic fantasy version and boy it did not disappoint. It had so much family drama, betrayal, secrets, revelations. It was like watching a literal telenovela, the ones that are so good that you can't wait for the next episode. I never thought I could get so frustrated of what was happening IN A BOOK but then again I never thought I could hate a character so much! But, this book accomplished just that. The author does such an awesome job dropping bombs on those revelations that I kinda saw coming but still shookt meeee..

If you like books that have:
• Multiple POV
• Instant attraction
• Fae
• Family drama
• Mysterious magic
• Forbidden love
• Enemies to lovers
This book might just be for you!

First of all, Thanks to the author for sending me an e-ARC of this amazing book in exchange of an honest review.

What am I suppose to say about this?
I liked it? I loved it? I think that won't describe the feelings I had while reading this book. I am spellbound after I finished it. It has an amazing plot. It would definitely catch your interest in no time. I mostly read romance (which is maximum contemporary). If I am being honest, this was my first book in YA romance, and right now, I have no words to describe it. Right when you think it's getting boring, it gives you a plot twist. And I loved that. At least I faced this situation. And honestly right now, I my situation is like 'When-the-sequel-is-going-to-be-out' type. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

So yes. This book does have a great plot and some awesome unexpected twists and turns. It is worth of your time and effort.

I would definitely tell everyone to give it a try.

Read it, and I am 100% sure that you will also love this as much as I did.

Till then,
Happy Reading

Semi clean read
No details on anything explicit. But they do talk about heavy subjects. Abuse and a potential r*pe scene.

Many POV but it works!
Even though this is a pretty thick book there was never any point that was boring or dragging.
I’m impressed with the pacing and the lack of predictability.
I enjoyed all the characters and twists this story has to offer.

This is the first book In A series but no worries the ending doesn’t end with a cliffhanger. Obviously it is a to be continued but I was not frustrated because a lot of the questions at the beginning were finally answered by the end.

The first book of the duology Of Fire & Fae gave me what I like in YA fantasy: interesting characters, fae and a whole new world with mysteries and royals. A great adventure with drama and my favorite trope, enemies to lovers. The cover is stunning and the story itself fascinated me. Because of the world and the characters I was so hooked. You know the feeling when you can't escape from a book and living your life is not possible anymore. Frozen Hearts and Death Magic gave me a new obsession and I was so ready to embrace it with my whole being.

The multiple POVs give you more insight and details. You feel like the characters are living creatures who can speak to you through the pages and you really feel like you're part of their story. What I really loved is the magic system, it was just *chefs kiss*, the world structure was incredible and the thought of iron magic and death magic just wow.

You need to read this book. I loved it so much. Literally I couldn't put it down. And I don't really wanted to. It was just perfect. The magic, the romance, the whole fae vs human situation and don't mention the style, because it was so well-written like a work of art.

Although the ending was totally killing me. I hate cliffhangers and I need book 2 like yesterday. I can't function without it. When's the release date? Asking for a friend. Yes, that friend is me. 👉👈 Do yourself a favor and read Frozen Hearts and Death Magic!!

A lot happened in this book, I don’t quite know where to start! It’s the first book in a new series called Of Fire and Fae and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

This book is told from multiple perspectives, but mainly that of Naia and Fel, twins from Umbraar, and Leah, a Princess from Frostlake. There is a lot of political intrigue in this book, which creates the tension and many plot twists! I almost felt like there could have been a part 1 and part 2 as the first half of the book felt like a different story, it’s been a journey!

‘Guard your heart. It’s the most precious thing you have.’

We first meet Naia as she is sneaking out of her home and comes across River, a fae, who all have been presumed wiped out or missing as no one had seen any fae since the great war 20 years prior. Naia helps River, who appears injured and brings him into his home, where he wakes up and one thing leads to another and they’re sharing a kiss, which makes River disappear. Flash forward a year and Naia and Fel are on their way to Frostlake for a gathering of all the kingdoms. Leah has been told that she must choose a husband at this gathering, but is forbidden from choosing Fel. The kingdoms don’t seem to like the Umbraar royalty, and it is a big mystery to the twins as to why. Fel and Leah meet, and it is love, or at least infatuation, at first sight. However, there are multiple complications keeping them apart. Whilst at the gathering, Naia bumps into River, the fae she thought she had killed with her kiss.

‘Love is a strange, wild thing, isn’t it? It gets caged in such a little word.’

There are two romances within this book, which was perfect! Both couples had their fair share of miscommunication issues, but all were dealt with overtime. River is a very mysterious fae, and had a lot of secrets, which frustrated me and also Naia This mystery kept me intrigued and turning the pages. Fel and Leah have the hardest time out of the two couples, but it was so clear how they felt about one another. Naia, Fel and Leah all begin to learn how to control and use their magic. They all have very different magical abilities, including River, and it was so interesting to see these described and to understand how they all work.

Frozen Hearts and Death Magic is described as a telenovela, and I would say that through the writing and the way the story is told this is very clear! It did take a while to get used to, but as soon as I was into it I couldn’t put it down! There are many twists and turns that I did not see coming but when they happened I realised the clues were there all along. I would like to see these characters truly develop into the strong independent characters I believe them to be. There is a lot that I would like to have happened, but I think this will all be covered in the sequel! I’m looking forward to these romances developing further, and seeing how they deal with the looming war!

This is an enemies-to-lovers fantasy with a taste of forbidden love and a generous portion of family drama. We have the stories of royal twins Naia and Isofel and in a different kingdom princess Leah. We can't forget our beloved fae River who was found by Naia. All these stories and characters are being intertwined in such a fascinating way from start to ending! I love the fact that there were different types of magic and so many secrets and suspense. The romance was also amazing and I really enjoyed it! If you're looking for a fantasy novel with fae, magic and forbidden love, then give this one a chance 💜
