Lady Violet Attends a Wedding

Rate this book
Lady Violet Belmaine is just finding her balance as a widow who has recently put off mourning when she’s summoned to the family seat to celebrate a sibling’s wedding. Hugh St. Sevier’s escort makes the journey somewhat bearable, while Sebastian MacHeath’s presence among the guests is a more dubious blessing.

Violet is managing as best she can with her stubborn Papa, difficult brothers, and well meaning aunties, when the bride goes missing. Tempers flare, old secrets come out at the worst times, and Violet can rely on only St. Sevier and Sebastian to help her find the bride… until she discovers that St. Sevier was the last person seen with the missing lady!

Grace Burrowes started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. She is the sixth out of seven children, raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life she spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. Her first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy job that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.

It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.

While reading yet still more romance novels, Grace opened her own law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (she had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World a few years ago. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")

Grace eventually got up the courage to start pitching her manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the RWA retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

This time the mystery is closer to home. Once again Lady Violet and her two sawing are in the thick of things. More revelations about her family and about Sebastian come into play. Vintage Grace Burrowes with a twist.

We still don’t have a resolution to the love triangle in the series, so that aspect of the book troubles me. I love a romance in my historical mysteries, and I’m sure this will have one – eventually. After all, it is a Grace Burrowes book and she writes superb romances. However, I don’t care for triangles and really wanted a quick resolution. I must say though, it is written very well. It isn’t one of those triangles where the men are constantly at odds and argumentative. Instead, they seem to have formed a bit of a friendship and are both bent on protecting and looking out for Violet. I like that and I hate that – because one of them is going to be really hurt. But, maybe our intrepid author will handle that one with aplomb as well.

Lady Violet Belmaine has not dealt well with her widowhood – not that she was a happily married lady. She just had trouble dealing with it all, but thanks to the ministrations of Dr. Hugh St. Sevier she’s beginning to come out of hiding. She recently attended a house party and now she is on the way to attend her youngest brother’s wedding. It is hard to believe her sweet brother, Felix, is marrying. However, an accident as they arrive at the estate nearly takes Violet’s life and puts her out of commission for a little while. Luckily, her traveling companion, Hugh, manages to pull her from the raging waters and then treat her injuries.

Dr. Hugh St. Sevier is a French émigré who served with the English in the wars against Napoleon. It hurt him beyond belief to serve against his countrymen, but he couldn’t support Napoleon. As a physician in the wars, he did his best to heal soldiers from both sides even though each side mistrusted him. He is also totally besotted with Violet.

Sebastian, Marquess of Dunkeld was a Colonel in the English army – a war hero. He also had a history with Violet. Sebastian was totally besotted with Violet and asked her father if he could court her. Her father refused – and did even worse – he belittled Sebastian and told him Violet did as well. Violet wasn't aware that her friend had asked to court her - she would have welcomed it - but she was never given the chance.

Felix is entirely besotted with his bride-to-be, Katie Engle, and she is entirely besotted with him. That should certainly mean many years of happiness in their future. However, they must manage to marry first, and fate seems to be conspiring against them. Something must be amiss with the Engle finances because her father has yet to show up to discuss the marriage settlements. Then, the worst thing of all: Katie goes missing! No, she didn’t get cold feet and run away, she is well and truly missing. England’s weather has conspired to make searching nearly impossible and if Katie is exposed to the elements, she may not survive.

Will they find Katie? Will her parents finally show up to sign the marriage settlements? You’ll just have to read the book to find out. I can definitely recommend it as it is a lovely read.

This series seems to have fit my reading mood perfectly. As mysteries, the whodunit is easy to work out, but that isn't the mist important bit. Lady Violet is also working out her past, and what her feelings about it mean for her future. I am enjoying that aspect because you just don't see people thinking these things through very often.

The other aspect that fascinates me is that, unlike any other mysteries I can recall, the motive matters not as the way to solve the crime, but as a way to understand it. And where the amateur sleuth explains the whole thing to a rapt audience and then leaves the aftermath to a tame official of some sort, here Lady Violet explains the crime as a prelude to resolving it. The more one realizes just how little justice has to do with the U.S. criminal system, the more one will appreciate the importance of a resolution that suits the wronged party.

Happy there are more books!

I don't seem to be able to stop reading this series now that I've started. Wonderful characters, nice country house setting, family intrigue, and a plot with good twists kept me turning pages. Violet is a force and I cheer her cracking the verbal whip to see justice done.

This was even better than the first book in the series.
I learned more about the main characters of Violet, Sebastian, and Hugh. War affected the two men greatly, and Violet’s bad marriage affected her relationship with her papa.

A light, well-written mystery set in Regency England. The author, Grace Burrowes, is mostly known as a Regency romance writer (one of my favorites because of her writing, character development, historical research, and penchant for spinning stories about entire extended families, one character at a time). Apparently she wrote the first six books in this series (during the height of the pandemic, I believe)before releasing them all at once. The consistency and character arcs are a reflection of this, as I was delighted to see when I started reading this, the second n the series. It also means that readers don’t have to wait for a sequel to come out

Good Read!

A thoroughly enjoyable story! Lady Violet, The Marquess of Dunkeld, Sebastian, and Hugh St. Siever, propel us to another story that I cannot wait to read! As a Mystery fan, Agatha Christie never gets old, I am so pleased to have found these stories by a well known Author, Grace Burrowes!
I highly recommend! Thank you,

As mysteries go, this book was as lame as the first one. However, I’m enjoying the writing and I think Grace Burrowes is exploring topics she’s interested in through the series. Mostly relationships and their baggage. Misunderstandings and clarifications. I enjoy the triangular relationship between Sebastian, Sevier and Lady Violet. Again lots of characters holed up in an Earl's mansion when her brother's fiancé disappears. Parts of it were boring. The ending was interesting.

another great Lady Violet mystery

The author’s writing is such a pleasure: excitement presents itself early in the story and the pace never seems to slow down. I find the reading moves swiftly, and I also enjoy the variety of unusual words/“new vocabulary” that as to the story’s historical authenticity.

Lady Violet is, of course, confronted by another mystery, and Sebastian and St Sevier are not only willing to help, but both bring unusual talents to bear in working out the conundrum that presents itself. The author is unusually adept, as always, in coming up with very interesting plot development and plot twists.

I definitely have my favorites… Sebastian is at the top of my list of the men in Violet’s life.

Violet continues to grow as a person: she has come into her own and has begun to show confidence in the person she has become, even though the transition from the young girl she was before marriage has been a very difficult one. She is logical, sassy, funny, and clever; but she is also willing to accept her shortcomings and to apologize when she is wrong. It’s enjoyable to see her stand up to her self-centered father, whose hand… She discovers… Caused her life to take a turn that altered her life. Burrowes’ stories always highlight the dependence on honor, integrity, and loyalty, even when it’s difficult. Realistically, none of the characters are perfect, but the author extends Grace to them and even to the villain, although we find that there is more than one “villain“ in the story— beyond the person responsible for the disappearance of the bride. It is very interesting to see how the author deals with these people who are sneaky, manipulative, and hypocritical as they appear to act without concern for the people closest to them.

It was nice to meet her brothers and to see Violet find a way to see them now as adults and make peace where necessary.

This was an enjoyable book and I am excited to read the next in the series.

Lady Violet turns for home. One of her brothers, Felix, is getting married and she and her Doctor friend make the trip in a bad storm while he complains about the atrocious standard of English roads. But a carriage accident is only the start of their troubles.

We learn more about everyone’s back stories.

Violet is still angry over her father’s actions in her wedding [all for a water meadow] and she blames him for interfering again.

I always say primogeniture is the real antagonist in all Historical Romances, and here it is the same. The Earl’s eldest son and heir has married, has two daughters but has produced no sons, so he is terrified that the fourth son will produce a grandson first.

Sebastian MacHeath is Felix’s best friend. They served together, and he has inherited the adjoining property as part of his estate.

The bride is missing. Hugh St. Sevier was the last person seen with her, and he says he cannot reveal what they discussed; doctor's privilege.

I read it in a day but noticed a LOT of editing errors. ‘Your’ instead of ‘you’ and things like that; it needs a clearer eye or a better run through a grammar checking program. If they snag me, the story is not holding me, if that makes sense.

I will grant that she has some interesting solutions to the usual HR problems.

Light but unobjectionable. Violet, Sebastian and St Sevier are at Violet's father's home for her brother Felix's marriage to Katie Engle, whose family was reputed to be broke and potentially scandalous. On the way there Violet & St Sevier's carriage rolled and he pulled her out of a raging torrent & resuscitated her. She's recovering and meeting Katie and Katie's brother Cantrell. Then Katie goes missing. After days of searching in the rain, Vi's father receives a ransom note. Cantrell must deliver the ransom. Vi, S & S stake out the site & don't see anyone but the money is gone. The next day as a dam's about to burst, Vi & Sebastian's horses show interest in S's abandoned grain mill. They find Katie tied up in the basement and save her from drowning; Seb nearly drowns in the process. Cantrell's behind the kidnapping; he wanted the money for his sister's dowry. Katie forgives him. Vi chastises her father for sending Seb away when Seb wanted to court her & for marrying her off to a man who played around openly. The end result is her father will help fix the blackmail happening to Katie's father (gay), Vi's brother Mitchell & St Sevier will employ Cantrell in Paris, and Felix/Katie will get a patch of land from Vi so Felix can breed horses. Sebastian admits an illegit daughter from Spain & heads to Scotland to care for her. Vi loves both S & S. She and St Sevier head back to London.

Who needs a book boyfriend when you can have Lady Violet? though don't get me wrong, both Sebastian and Hugh would be great - and i love how adeptly Burrowes weaves the story amongst these 3, casting each man as a foil to the other, and letting Violet see herself through the regard of each.
The second-chance romance between Violet and MacHeath is just starting to spark back in into life in this second book of the series, and we get to meet her family and an important detail about Sebastian's.

My only complaint about this series so far is that all the names are too similar, especially violet's love interests, 😹

Mr Hugh St Sevier
Sebastian MacHeath

other characters and sometimes Violet refer to Sebastian as (Lord) Dunkeld. Violet's father, the earl, gets called Derwent. Just all too similar sounding and looking.
Stupid aristocrats and their tendency to get referred to by their titles as well as their family names.
V's eldest brother is Mitchell, sometimes "the viscount", sometimes Ellersby.

It starts to remind me of Balogh's Wescott series (Someone to Love) with the huge cast of characters, where we need to refer to the family tree at the beginning to keep track of everyone.

I enjoyed this installment in the Lady Violet series even more than the first one. Here, we meet Violet's family, made up of far too many brothers (one of whom is engaged), and a domineering father. When the soon-to-be bride disappears, Violet needs to find her before it's too late.

I appreciate Violet's slow emotional recovery in the wake of her husband's death. She didn't even care for him, but now has to rebuild herself, and seeing that journey take its next step was quite endearing. Hugh St. Sevier and Sebastian MacHeath get more fleshed out in this installment as well, particularly in regard to their war traumas.

The mystery in this one was more predictable than the previous one, and the solution was not as outlandish. But it definitely was more emotionally impactful, and thematically tied into Violet's familial issues.

All in all, I really, really liked this, and can't wait to see what Violet and her men get up to next.

Book 2 in the series, Lady Violet is attending the wedding of her brother, the fourth youngest son of the family. She is close to her brother Felix who earns his living raising horses.
The bride to be Katie is the oldest daughter of 5 siblings and her brother Cantrell is the first of the family to arrive.
Violet’s father and oldest brother Mitchell are not in favor of the match.
Violet is injured and almost died when bad weather causes an accident. Her friend and French physician and her Scottish neighbor and friend Sebastian Mac Heath are along side her during her recovery. They also help her find the missing bride to be.
Family secrets are revealed along with feelings and emotions.

Second in this series of cosy mysteries with a side of romance - or maybe romances with a side of mystery.

Like the first in series, this is a comforting but not compelling read. There’s a love triangle with a bit of will-they-or-won’t-they that, if I’m honest, is already wearing a bit thin after two books. I’m trusting it will be resolved before the end of this 6 book release. I already have extremely strong views on who Lady V should end up with.

The mystery itself isn’t the most compelling, but the language is lovely - there are many worse ways to spend a weekend than with these characters.

So enjoying the Lady Violet series. No surprise. This is Grace Burrowes creating this delight. A widowed lady of the ton investigates mysteries - not that she goes looking for them. It appears by these first two books I have read the mysteries drop in her unsuspecting lap. Fortunately, she has two wonderful male friends who aid in her unraveling of dastardly deeds and with the historical English settings and manners manage to ferret out the badly mannered as well as the criminals. No HEA, yet. What a fun read.

Lady Violet rocks

A terrific second novel in this new series. The characterisation is so good. Nuances, ambiguities, virtues and flaws make for whole, comprehensible people. Lady Violet is superb at teasing out layers of meaning, finding ways or resolving Gordon’s knots and doing so with charm and grace. She has two companions (suitors?)—- an irascible Scot, forged by war from a sensitive, gentle youth, and a charming French emigre, a doctor who served with Wellington’s Army. My money’s on the Scot, yet the doctor is such a good man.

Violet came off as an extremely whiny character in this second book of the series. Her initial irritation with Hugh St. Sevier was frustrating—especially when he only consulted her father because she was unconscious and later heavily medicated. For her to be upset about not being included in those decisions felt overly dramatic, and holding a grudge against him afterward made her seem unreasonable. From that point on, she came across as a constantly complaining character who couldn’t handle being left out.

I love Lady Violet. She's smart, capable, kind and determined to live her life her way.

This adventure has Violet assisting one of her brothers in trying to successfully marry the woman he loves against many obstacles, some from their own father.

These books are light, fun and easy reading with likable characters, a fairly gentle mystery to solve and great pacing. I enjoy this series and plan to continue with it.

I listened to the audiobook version of this title, I got this title free from the Audible Plus Catalogue, so didn’t start from book one - I shall rectify that immediately!

The other titles are also in the Plus Catalogue and I’m glad for that!

I didn’t know what to expect, but the characters are both diverse and interesting, brought wonderfully to life by a very adept narrator.

This tale is about a family house party for a wedding. Simple, right? Well, not so much! An enjoyable tale.

Family and friends

Lady Violet learns a lot about her family and friends while home for her brother’s wedding. This was less of a good mystery (it was immediately obvious who did it, but not why, which was more important), and I seriously worried for Katie. But I still really enjoyed it.

Really enjoying this series.

Lady Violet returns to her childhood home for her brother's wedding. On the way she is thrown from the coach, nearly drowned and suffers a blow to the head from a branch. While convalescing she is confused by the brides' parents not showing and her eldest brother's attempt to buy off the bride. However, the situation becomes dire when the bride disappears.

Very enjoyable light mystery with romance, like book 1 of the series. I like Lady Violet very much, and appreciate her moving beyond her experiences in her first marriage. Sebastian and Hugh are both good men, much different from her late husband. It will be interesting to see where her relationship with each of them goes as we learn more and more about the men.

I am looking forward to book 3.

An interesting story.

Lady Violet returns home for her brother's wedding. This book is an incite into family life during the Regency England time period. The characters are well thought out and realistic. The story has a touch of mystery and romance. Ms. Burrowes has another hit on her hands. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
