Noobtown #6

Nautical Noobs

Rate this book
In Jim’s absence, Zorlando has been doing a pretty good job keeping Windfall safe. He doesn’t know, and may not be equipped for, what is heading straight toward Noobtown, though. Will Jim beat the Pirates while he is on Glorious Roberts’ ship? Will he make it back to his beloved city before Maggie, the Assassin, gets there? Why are there Pirates attempting to sack Windfall? Most importantly, will Shart ever be the opposite of inside out again?

All these questions may or may not be answered in the sixth book of the bestselling Noobtown LitRPG series.

They will.

I am starting to really like this series. Some of the things that annoyed me in the early books are now endearing. Puma check. I thought that was overdone in the earlier books but now I find it hilarious. It also helps that I know longer put myself in the MCs place. The things the MC does is just so far and away out of the normal for any reasonable person I could no longer do that. This just lets me sit back and enjoy the absurdity of the story. Overall the story is good, the characters are funny and I am enjoying the series.

Another solid installment.

I'm not sure low long it's going to be until book 7 comes out, so I'm writing a summary of #6 so I don't have to reread it later.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the sea adventure. However once back in windfall I had a lot of fun. Though at the end everything seemed very convoluted and confusing.

I read this when I needed a break from another book so I think that may have influenced my enjoyment because I was so sick of fast paced action. Because the whole fast paced sea adventure with mermaids I feel is normally something that would be very exciting to me. I really started enjoying it once I finished the other book. So take that with a grain of salt.

I am getting a bit worried about Jim’s OPness? (That’s definitely a word and I know…) but being serious he has always been OP because of unbound and since he was designed to defeat Charles ect… I understand but in this book there seemed to be very little consequences to anything he did.

Spoilers:

Fix a sunken ship sure, learn a god level spell, draw attention of the system by doing cpr, being able to direct a deadly orb of death you got the item already.

I know Charles is a godling so Jim needs to be close to his abilities for a real fight that we are eventually leading to but I fear this series will get boring if he just is able to skip through all of his problems.

It took me a while to get around to finishing this one. The first at least 50% of the book failed to engage me and frankly didn't contribute much to the story.

The last 1/3 of the book moved things along, but it took me a long time to force myself to get that far. There is still some humour and the quality of the writing is good as always. However, it also includes one of my pet peeves, villains that the MC the knows are a lethal menace who he allows to live. Don't feel like getting into spoilers so I'll leave that there.

A series can survive one book like this, as it did still have some good stuff in it. Another bloated narrative like this though will be it for me.

More of the same Jim-ed up goodness

If you enjoyed the earlier entries in this series, you won't be disappointed by book 6. As Jim works his way towards Noontown and battle with Charles once more, hijinks, pretenders to the title of mayor, and shrewd assassins make themselves known

First the good parts, it's a fun book and don't take it seriously. It will give you the silly vibes to entertain.

Now for the reason why I personally chose to give 3/5. I have been reading this series previous installments and I know what to expect(mostly). The previous book was action packed and had more story growth. This book let down in some annoying traits, few spoilers ahead.

1) Julia doesn't believe and it is repeated several times(annoyingly) and suddenly she believes when it's convenient

2)Jim wants to protect people, enemies kill his Town's residents, and yet when he can kill the enemy, conveniently he Doesn't, the enemy grows some character out of nowhere, and Jim just joins them. It's super frustrating. If someone needs to have redeeming characters don't just pop them out suddenly and say it's cool we arr friends now.

3) the Assassin Magpie, she is portrayed in a cruel light, still Jim hesitates to kill her. He feels regret on not killing her, but once it's said the Assassin could be royal, then it is debated if she should even die... It doesn't matter how many die along the way at the hands of the enemy but hey, they are just cannon fodder in the story line.

In all honesty, Jim has no strong conviction, he doesn't have strong loyalty (it is depicted as he does) but his actions defy his loyalty to his people. Lot of plot Armor, plot holes, convenient empathy and compassion to just make it look all dandy. Silly jokes and fun read is okay but have some core values and make it stick at least to the MC.

The weakest book so far.

While i still like the story this book had a lot of flaws for me. Thhe author tried sometimes too hard to make the story funny and some of the secondary characters really start to grate on my nerve, especially Zorlando and the princess. I was no fan of the sea battles and found the deeds of the elf unbelievable. The assassin is very different than in the last book. I found the legendary paladin very underwhelming both in character and action The bad guys angle was quite interesting but makes the motivation and actions of his wannabe assassin in the dungeon redundant. The end seemed a bit forced

One of the best litRPG series out there, (IMO)

I randomly stumbled across the noobtown series back in 2019. I have read, reread, listened to, re-listened to, then read again...ok you get the idea. This series is an undeniable favorite. I have suggested it to many of my friends, and not a one doesn't own the entire series. I feel like a cult promoter. The newest installment fits in very well, giving more life to an already rich world, while keeping a great pace and keeping the jokes coming. It was definitely worth the wait and i finally scratched my noob itch. Of course now I can't wait for book 7 and the itch has started all over. This series is like literary crack, minus the possibility of overdose.

I started this series before but never got past the second book.
I read books with badly constructed characters before but this series has something worse: characters that change to fit the narrative instead of driving it.
Other extremely annoying things you can find:
overuse of poor jokes
action scenes broken by long long looooooong tangents and useless explanations.
Over complicated systems and skills that don't make sense and pages long explanations about it.

The more I listened the worst the book got; the system at this point makes no sense as established rules are constantly thrown out or over ridden and there is always some obscure but useful system part that no one mentioned to the MC only to exclaim “How could you not know about this!!!” Like they haven’t realized he knows next to nothing.

All the side characters were even worse and annoying. At this point it’s a miracle that the MC doesn’t just give up and leave the town when the bratty princess spends multiple pages whining how he can’t be the mayor but he is. She has openly omitted to planning on making him a slave to the “real” mayor. Everyone in town seems angry with him for being their mayor but rely on him for everything.

The MC is constantly moving but never seems to take time to improve himself or research instead he spends time lazing around only for a him to be caught off guard.

For a world that seems to be rewritten like code there is a lot that seems to be blocked to MC just cause but everyone else can just ignore them like the assassin that uses luck and traps but aren’t setting traps still an aggressive action??? Or summon a creature that attack someone but that’s not aggressive because some technicality but the MC can’t slightly cut someone before becoming a bonfire…in his own town… that he controls. Or that the assassin can take someone’s form and confidently the barrier will instead burn the real person. It got so ridiculous like why didn’t the assassin do that before? Oh because Jim gave her the idea… when? And why is it so easy to beat the system.

The story has so many filler stories that add next to nothing overall and are largely ignored later on.

I think I’m done with this series. It has become more of a hate than love read and felt like a trial just finishing the book.

Meta LitRPG Fun!

If you live meta, if you love--or even just like a little--LitRPG, you are going to hate this. I Kid! I KID!! You will Love it! All the snarkiness of the original (Still ongoing, I just needed a silly thing to say) with a few excellent new meta tidbits tossed in for crunchiness. And don't forget the shredded--oh, so SHREDDED--cheese! This snark salad sandwich bowl is filled with disgusting delight. Drag out your Badgie Snacks and Special Badger dipping sauce and set your mind to Nautical Noobs with wild abandon. You will be sorry....,WON'T be, I mean won't be... oh who am I kidding... If you are this far, you know I mean what I said.

I am DYING waiting for the Audiobook of this one!! Johnathan, You can do this, I believe in you, Ahahahahahahahaha.

This book had some funny moments, but that's all.

The overall plot/story is getting increasingly flawed, and I really don't think there will be any way out of it, so I'm leaving this series.

It was fun, but I'm tired of a series like this one, which goes nowhere and becomes a circlejerk of bad jokes and repetitive references.

Large step back from the last book. The pacing is way off. The plot seems forced at every turn. And the climax itself was criminally boring, anticlimactic, used numerous plot devices, and had no payoffs as it bulldozed from one part to the next.

Most of my complaints from this series remain the same. But this book did lose some of the things I had liked about the series.

The first is this Julia character. She’s so unlikable. A spoiled, classist, insufferable, delusional and ignorant moron who brings absolutely nothing to the table. It makes ZERO sense to me why MC allows her to dictate so much of what happens in this book. I think any reasonable person would have sent her packing after they got back to home base. But we need her for the plot so she stays despite insulting and belittling the MC in every single conversation they have. Insulting and belittling him to anyone who will listen. Insulting and belittling his people at every opportunity. Taking his bedroom in his house. Getting his ship sunk. Terrible character. I know she’s on the whole, “she’ll come around and fall in love arc” but at what cost I ask? Now it’s fine not to like some characters, I’m not the writer, but I can criticize the fact there’s no reason in the context of this story for the MC to put up with it. His path was to rescue her, not be her doormat.

The next thing is the pacing is all off.

The whole underwater escapade was so stupid and forced. The whole point seemed to be to have this artifact get stolen by the Queen, and maybe to get the progenitor ship. That ship seemed cool at least, until it immediately gets dominated in the battle in the end and just runs away. Totally pointless, the entire arc. Could have just stuck the artifact ring in another nook in the city like they did with the other plot device, I mean artifact.

The climax was paced very aggressively, so much so we just go from one scenario to the next, and that’s fine, if it’s just a battle. But it isn’t. First it’s a long fight with the assassin that gets the barrier taken down, that gets interrupted before that situation is fully settled by the incoming pirate fleet, which goes into a battle that isn’t a battle on the sea, which goes into battles on the street, which goes into battle with the Queen, which goes to a truce and agreed contract, which goes back to a battle with the Queen but now she’s playing for keeps and uses plot device number 2, which goes to her getting her head cut off, and seemingly finally it’s over, then her head gets reattached for some reason, and then the street cracks open and immediately MC somehow clocks the whole situation, and then some eldritch horror is released on the world as a new quest.

It’s like give us a second please. Gives us one payoff. Assassin doesn’t get it, Queen doesn’t get it, we don’t get any real wins in this story. Just lame. This progression fantasy. It’s power fantasy. Payoffs are kind of the whole point.

So as I’ve said before, consistency is a real issue with the overall series. There’s been two books in this series I have really enjoyed and highly rated, ignoring the issues I’ve listed in other reviews. But I can’t go there with this one. This is my least favorite of the series so far.

TLDR: a disappointing installment in the series with inconsistent characters, forced humor, weak plot elements, and a lack of coherent world-building. The book struggles with filler content and fails to maintain the charm and engagement of the earlier books, leading to an overall underwhelming experience. 2/10

Noobtown #6: Nautical Noobs - A Sinking Ship of a Story

"Noobtown #6: Nautical Noobs" continues the series with a mix of humor and fantasy, but unfortunately, it seems to have lost its magic. The book is plagued by characters who are inconsistent and seem to bend to the whims of the plot rather than driving it forward. Key characters like Zorlando and the princess become increasingly irksome, and the attempts at humor often fall flat, breaking the flow of action scenes with lengthy, unnecessary tangents.

The story's structure feels weaker compared to its predecessors. The sea battles are underwhelming, and the actions of the elf character are hard to believe. There's a noticeable shift in the assassin's character from the last book, and the legendary paladin, a new addition, fails to impress both in terms of character depth and action.

What's more, the book's internal logic is inconsistent. Established rules of the game-like world are frequently disregarded, leading to confusing and often frustrating scenarios. The protagonist's lack of growth and tendency to be unprepared is a recurring theme, further diminishing the engagement.

The narrative also suffers from excessive filler content that adds little to the overall story. Key elements like the assassin's abilities and their exploitation of the system's loopholes are not only confusing but also poorly explained. The motivations and actions of certain characters, like the princess and the town's inhabitants, feel forced and contrived, often contradicting earlier established behaviors.

"Nautical Noobs" is a disappointing addition to the Noobtown series. It strays from the charm and coherence that might have been present in the earlier books, resulting in a fragmented and often tedious read. Fans of the series might find some enjoyable moments, but overall, this installment feels like a missed opportunity to further develop the rich world of Noobtown.

Turned up to 11
For better or worse, this series reminds me more than ever of Xanth, but a lot of the puns and jokes rhyme with pop culture, but don't always make perfect sense.

Things have gotten a little confusing as most of the big-story arch major players have at least 2 or 3 names. And more confusing with O'Really, Jim the Mayor, and Grebthar all coalescing around the same person.

Jim being an Elf Buddy and his relationship with Twinkle have its moments.

Although the way Jim gets a new ship to sail back to the city is absurd and hasn't been previously established as being in anyway within the realm of possibilities is ridiculous, some of the on-ship action is cool, and gets to highlight more of Glorious Robert, and Hansa's talents qualifying her to boss around old salts with her cute "sea-swears" is pretty well written and fun.

Jim tries to be single-minded and focused on killing his new arch-nemesis, and helping Badgelor complete his epic quest, but soon discovers he can't leave behind his morals, attempts and heroism, and inability to let the ends justify the means. And yet, he doesn't seem to feel a sense of urgency to get back in time to save Fenris one of his staunch supporters, getting distracted many times along the way.

Jim's relationship with the princess is a pretty well trodden plot but is executed fairly well in most places. Definitely a lot of places where as a reader "in the know" its very funny.

A lot of things circle around. Didn't kill the assassin last time you encountered her, she's back, waiting and much more effective. Freed a weird bird creature as a matter of convenience while digging out of a hole. Good news, the bird is a progenitor, the one mythical creature that has the technical knowledge to save Fenris, when Jim finally gets around to worrying about that.

By the end the Duke and Duchess of Falcon have accepted Jim and bring their army to bear at his command. Julias life quest was to merry the real Mayor Jim, regardless of things like love and respect. Now she is stuck in a bit of a pickle.

Almost in passing Jim wakes up Grebthar's partner, Master Holbrook the Paladin, who just conveniently has just the right kind of magic for fighting off the latest challengers to the city that Jim can't handle by himself.

The attack on the city, and seeing it from the enemies side and the rational of the leaders of the enemy, until they finally clash with Jim, was pretty fun.

The Progenator healed Fenris.

Nautical Noobs (Noobtown, #6) by Ryan Rimmel

Nautical Noobs, the sixth installment in Ryan Rimmel's Noobtown series, sets sail with promise but ultimately gets lost at sea. While Rimmel attempts to introduce new elements to keep the series fresh, this latest entry struggles to stay afloat.

Rimmel's writing maintains its usual flair, with descriptive prose and witty dialogue that keep readers engaged despite the book's shortcomings.

However, the plot of Nautical Noobs feels contrived and lacking in substance. The introduction of maritime adventures adds little to the overall narrative and serves more as a distraction than a meaningful development. Character motivations remain shallow, and the stakes never feel truly high, resulting in a story that fails to captivate.

Rating: ⭐⭐ (2/5)

Nautical Noobs may appeal to die-hard fans of the series eager for another glimpse into the world of Noobtown, but for others, it's likely to be a forgettable addition to the franchise.

Jim is back and it seems like an awful lot of people want to kill him, including some of his supposed friends. The problem is that he is the Mayor of Windfall, and the mayor is a legendary figure whose return heralds the return of the Dark One. The mayor is on the side of light, but lots of important people think Jim is a fraud and want him dead. Many of those same people don’t really believe that the Dark One exists. Jim is in their way. So, while Jim is still trying to get home, many who should be his allies are trying to take down Windfall and get rid of him. (They don’t understand the mayor isn’t home.)

This is another fun story in which most of Jim’s serious problems are caused by the assassin from book 5 who is still trying to get at him. Rimmel has a lot of fun both with his storyline and with the intricate game mechanics he as developed. The best moment in the story comes when Jim finally finds the assassin and is ripping her to shreds when the town arrives thinking he is actually beating up the well-liked woman the assassin is disguised as. The resolution to this problem was very funny—after appropriate tension, of course.

Can’t wait for the next book.

Best audible book I have listened to all year. This series goes on my list as one of the few that absolutely has to be experienced via audible.

The narrator Johnathan McLain once again did an amazing job. I straight caught myself giggling once because I enjoyed how much “dumb dumb” was living up to his name disposing of poisonous chilly to save the masses! He did such a good job of portraying “dumb dumb” that I caught myself getting lost in the moment and got annoyed with some of the choices being made. Then I quickly realized that was what made it so fun and that he had a reputation to uphold!

I loved the character progression and the mage specialty that was chosen in the end. Sets it up for very intriguing possibilities in the future.

Also loved all the supporting characters. From the “true dummy” Sir Dalton having conversations with his various limbs to Sharts demeaning treatment of his poor precious “dumb dumb” to Badgelor’s snacking on Jim”s erectile disfunction cream! Can’t get enough of this series!

Even better than the last!

I've been looking forward to this book for quite some time having plowed through the previous books in the series One of the greatest choice of reading these books is each book improves on the one that proceeded it being character development and concepts introduced and just ensure wonderful fun of the characters and the antics they get up to I would recommend this series to anyone that might be a few people who don't like all the geeky references in it but if you don't get geeky references you're not going to notice anyway this is just a wonderful book I'm already looking forward to the audiobook because I know that I'll be wonderful voice acted or looking forward to the next one I apologize for any inconsistencies incomprehension in this review as I've written it with voice to text

The juvenile humor and pop culture references really weren't doing it for me, and I am out.

The MMC Jim continued to chaotically react to whatever situation he ended up in and make stupid decisions out of ignorance. There was no real growth in his character, and the story was full of action and fighting in ridiculous situations. All the female characters were flat and annoying, and Badgelor and Shart/Kevin sass were the only redeeming parts IMO. As a side note, I don't really understand why Badgelor (who is supposed to be a War Badger) kept getting referred to as a weasel. Badgers are not weasels.

I can see how people that like Dungeon Crawler Carl may like this style of storytelling, but I hadn't enjoyed DCC from the first book, so it's not surprising that it was a true struggle for me to continue with this series.
