Cursed by Death: A Graveminder Novel

Rate this book
"Series fans will be delighted to revisit Marr's colorful cast" ( Publisher's Weekly on Cursed By Death) . Return to the world of Graveminder, Goodreads Choice Winner for Best Horror Novel in this stand-alone Graveminder novel that Publisher's Weekly calls "equally quirky."
Amity Blue has begun to remember strange impossible events, her ex trying to bite her and people vanishing like mist. After a stalker-a dead stalker-appears at the bar where she works, Amity discovers that the dead don't always stay dead in Claysville.
Along with the current Graveminder, Rebekkah Barrow, Amity seeks out the enigmatic Mr D in the afterlife, only to discover that the centuries-old contract to protect Claysville has been broken.
Caught between life in a cursed town and Death himself, Amity and Rebekkah must find a way to put the dead where they belong-because if the Hungry Dead keep rising, everyone in town will be lost.

I’d like to give this book at least 4 stars - the story is solid and thoroughly enjoyable .... however, the amount of typos in the Kindle addition made wading through the story and keeping story lines straight difficult at best ... I’m not talking one or two, but I stopped counting when I got to 50 at the halfway point of the book .... you might want to hire someone more adept at proof reading if you want people to continue to purchase your books!

Second in the Graveminder horror urban fantasy series and revolving around the Undertaker and the Graveminder in Claysville. The primary focus is on Amity Barrow with the couple focus on Rebekah Barrow and Byron Montgomery.

My Take
Fate rules all in Claysville. It’s a tantalizing start, scaring me with the curse and the blessing of Rebekah’s and Bryon’s relationship. It only gets scarier as Marr shows us how deeply this goes. Then we get introduced to Death and his provocations and abilities.

Marr is using a third person global subjective point-of-view with the primary perspectives from Amity, Rebekah, Byron, Alicia, and a number of minor characters.

I do feel for Byron. He’s so in love and incredibly protective of Rebekah, who is quite careless of her safety and her attraction to Death. As for Charles, he’s an enigma. Both concerned for Rebekah’s safety and very attracted to her. Charles is primarily attracted to her role, and he adores provoking her lover.

Marr has some mean rules in this world with its "strange charm”. To be able to live in any time, unable to die, for a second time.

There are a number of vague references that people born in Claysville can’t leave, although there are exceptions. And that restriction is alleviated by the fact that no one gets sick, there are no alcoholics, and you can only die by accident, mountain lion attack, or old age. Shops are family-run and you usually did what your parents had done.

Alicia has an interesting character arc with some nasty truths that come out at the end. Liz’s character arc has quite the jump, although we won’t be seeing much of it for a while. Colton has some revelations to comprehend, ones that make sense of recent decisions.

Chris McInney sounds like a great guy. Easygoing and deeper in love with his wife every day.
”And I tolerate those kids that happen sometimes because of the sex.”
It can be a tricky story to understand, as Marr is vague on some facts, past histories, and trying to keep some of the characters straight what with Alicia, Amity, Chris, and Colton and all the Barrows who’ve died.

There is some action with interesting characters and yet most of the focus is on what these characters are thinking.

That is quite the soft cliffhanger Marr leaves us on, when she reveals Charles’ deepest desire.

The Story
Death is invulnerable and yet something has changed in the land of the dead. Charlie is under attack, and the dead are dying. The rules are changing, and the dead are wakening too early.

Do not ask questions, and you’ll do okay in Claysville.

The Characters
Amity Blue is a bartender at Gallagher’s, which is owned by Daniel Greeley. She’s also Byron’s former lover and former best friends with Rebekah. Bonnie Jean is the sister killed in a mountain lion attack.

Rebekah “Bek” Barrow has been the Graveminder for the past few months, who had inherited the family farmhouse and is Byron’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, with their lives tied together. Cherub is Bek’s cat.

Byron Montgomery is the Undertaker in both roles of his life. As one, he ferries the Graveminder to the land of the dead. As the other, he owns and runs the Montgomery Family Funeral Home, the only one in town and where Elaine is the manager, receptionist, and general assistant. Allan is a temp mortician.

Ellan Mae “Ella” is Bek’s stepsister. Maylene Barrow had been Bek’s grandmother. Aunt Cecilia “Cissy” Barrow, Liz’s mother, had wanted power.

The town council runs Claysville and its members include Mayor Liz Barrow (Chelly is Liz’s assistant), Daniel, Reverend McLendon, Rabbi Wolfe, and Father Ness. Nicolas Whittaker is the former mayor. I’m not sure who Xavier or Penelope are. Leigh is the librarian. Jenni McCormick runs McCormick’s Pub with a number of sidelines.

Chris McInney is the sheriff and is married to Evelyn “Ev”. I think Elias is one of their children? The always-on-the-move Colton McInney has just moved back — yielding to an irresistible impulse and is one of Chris’ deputies and a cousin. Taylor is Colton’s brother. Darby is another deputy. Suzie Adams is one of the techs.

Troy had been a boyfriend of Amity’s and friend to Bonnie Jean.
Michael Garrety is a sad case and only gets sadder. Courtney is a user. Jilly had been their friend. Green Grove Cemetery is a frequent haunt of Rebekah’s. Joseph is recently dead. Teresa intervened with Aunt Cissy. Daisha had been a victim of Aunt Cissy.

In the land of the dead . . .
. . . Charles Dee, a.k.a. Mr D or Death, rules and is both enemy and ally. Marie, Ward, Patricia, and Cora are servants.

Alicia Barrow, a former Graveminder who broke the rules, has been dead for two centuries and now runs the General Goods store and is head of the only true criminal enterprise. Her men include Frankie Lee ("Guns for the Dead"), Milt, and Cletus, who are loyal. Connor, a former Undertaker, is Alicia’s dead jerk of a husband.

Some of the dead include Henry, who has ticked off Julia. Miss Walpole is another of the dead. The Hungry Dead are those who died and are not properly tethered to the earth. Abigail Barrow had been the original Graveminder and the love of Charles’, um, life. Bitty had been another Graveminder.

The Cover and Title
The cover is black with shades of gray and a pop of red from the scattered roses. It begins with wrought iron scrollwork framing the inner graphic of a long road bordered by trees. In the forefront is a silver flask. The title is a silver outlined in red with the series info to the right of “by”. At the bottom is the author’s name in white along with a testimonial, which is below that.

The title is aimed at so many people, for they are all Cursed by Death in some way.

I was so excited to revisit this world and these characters since I loved Graveminder… but it was difficult getting past all the typos (is editing no longer a thing?) and the cliffhanger ending left me annoyed and disappointed. So much was left unfinished, like it wasn’t an ending but the author walking away from the story for a minute. It’s sad because I liked the characters and the concept…

I also purchased Bullets for the Dead when it came out, and now the same short stories appear in this volume? I don’t appreciate wasting my money buying these twice…

When this one showed up on my library's website I grabbed it quickly as I like the author, not realizing that I dnf'ed the 1st book years ago when it came out. I wasn't too lost as I read. I do think it's odd that so much is kept hidden from the town that affects them. I also hated how Death pulled a fast one on the town and now they have to deal with a lot of crap due to him.

The sequel to The Graveminder wasnt as good and the ending was lacking in that it didnt resolve the main issue of the book which is the breaking of the contract.

Words cannot express how thankful I am that Melissa Marr had time to dive back into the Graveminder world. I loved Cursed by Death and hope that she decides to revisit this world again. That ending?! I want/need to know what happens next.

*DNF at page 148 (out of 238 pages)
I am not going to lie Graveminder could have stood as a stand-alone but I was desperate for a second book because I loved all the characters except for one and I loved the world so much I wanted to just keep being immersed in it.
The reason I DNFed this book is because I lied to myself apparently. I read Bekka and Amity and panicked because the one character I did not like in the first book was Amity. So I lied told myself it would be fine. We’ll still get more of Bek and Byron like we wanted. It won’t center around Amity.
Well folks I lied.
This book centers around the one character I cannot stand and I swear there were only three chapters where she wasn’t mentioned.
Also if you’re good at deciphering code you’ll love this book because the amount of typos and errors was enough to give me a headache like remembering why I didn’t like Amity in the first place (we get it you used to have a thing with Byron before Bek came back. Get over yourself Amity. She kept acting like she was God’s gift to the world and I was just so done especially when all the other characters kept confirming it. I don’t get what’s so special about Amity.)
Melissa Marr has better books than this so I would recommend reading either the first book, the wicked lovely series, Made for You, (even the Wicked and the Dead was more enjoyable than this book and that one comes with a boatload of issues).

A sequel in the Graveminder series that can stand alone. I read Graveminder years ago and am glad to have read it first so as to not have anything given away. I did not recall all of the details of the first book and you don't need them.
This story focuses on Amity Blue, a bar tender who knows there's something off about her town but for her splitting headaches simply can't put it together, until she does. There are some interesting twists and questions that arise as this gothic zombie novel unravels to deliver a final punch.

Included are Graveminder novellas Guns for the Dead and Changing Guards, both fun pieces that give further insight into the world of the Graveminder, but not essential to understanding the story. These two novellas focus on the deceased former Graveminder Alice, and Mr. D.

*My Star rating:
5 stars is almost never given after a first reading as this rating means the writing is so captivating that it has stood the test of time and I'll come back to it again and again.

3 star is my go to for a good fun read. 4 star is a cut above with noteworthy writing.
I'm a big Melissa Marr fan and her writing definitely shines and draws me in every time no matter what genre she chooses.

Not sure WHY I listened to the 2nd book when the 1st one wasn't good... but I really wish I hadn't.

The characters voices, personalities and (in the case of one) even her NAME was different in this book!

There were two sets of main characters and I really didn't like any of them. Both the main female characters completely changed personalities (Amity was actually kinda cool in the first book). And the men (including Mr.D) where totally cliché!
In this book the author added a lot more "F" words, maybe trying to make it seem edgier? It seriously just made it more cringy!

Oh, and there were important facts that changed in book two.

Just dumb!

I do not recommend!

After reading Bullets for the dead, I love seeing the direction the story took in this Graveminder Sequel. It was awesome to see the story evolve from how it started out into what it is now. I loved how this time around there were a lot of amazing POVs, including Alicia´s and Charlie´s. It was wonderful to see more of them.

I am rooting for Amity and Colton, they are amazing together.

The story ended rather abruptly, with an open ending. I hope we will get to read another installment in the Graveminder series. It is such a wonderful and magical world that Melissa Marr has created and I always love coming back to it.

Intriguing

The relationships between the characters was a little hard to follow at first. It eventually became clear that everyone in town had a role determined by their ancestry. Claysville is a own where no one that was born there can leave. Because of a curse, the dead are cared for by a graveminder and companion, to prevent them from coming back and eating and ratings the townspeople. What a twisted plot. I really enjoyed this book. I would have given it five stars if it hadn't been a cliff hanger.

This was a pretty fun new world but I didn't realize it was actually book 2 in the series. Book 1 apparently came out in 2002 so I guess she decided to pick it up again. I loved the premise of the book but it definitely felt like a "series" book and also felt a little YA to me (with Death being flirty - I mean, really?) but was still entertaining. I will probably read book 1 and look for others in the series.

I really, really wanted to love this. I adored the first book, finished it in a day, and immediately ordered this one. However, this one is significantly less thought-out and more tropey than the first. Also, it seemed like it was written in haste and/or not proofread thoroughly. Almost every page had a minor error (I.e. a plural instead of singular, extra article, or missing word). These small but numerous errors were distracting and detracted from my reading enjoyment.

Nine years for this book to come out and now another non ending. Ugh. Too much extraneous junk getting in the way of the plot. It's like this book can't decide what it wants to be. It's a place holder to set up another book in the series but how long until it comes along? My interest lagged a lot waiting for this one and I'm not sure I'll bother with another. The characters don't change or evolve. Some interesting things are set up but nothing is done with them. It's stagnant.

Death comes to town

Once again we are transported to a small town where a curse lies. As long as the Grave minded tends the graves, the dead should NOT rise. But somethings gone wrong. Really wrong. Loved going back. Am looking forward to what happens next. Great character development. Good story plot.

I don't know what was going on with this, if it was something with the publisher or if the author was rushed to churn this out. Who knows. This however, was a really terrible sequel. Even worse than the first, riddled with plot holes and tangents. There was so many typos and grammatical errors, and even some missing words from dialogue paragraphs. It was a mess overall.

This novel was a fast read because I couldn't put it down! I enjoyed seeing Marr's take on how the characters from Graveminder continue to develop. The novel answers a lot of questions left from the first book, but also leaves you dying for the next one.

Great book but needs better editing

Love this series, but the grammatical errors and spelling issues can be distracting. The characters are relatable and the chapters give you the story from different perspectives

This was a great read. I enjoyed going back to this world, and having a bit more world building. Before this book I kind of liked Charles. Now I think he's an ass, but an entertaining ass. I really hope Melissa Marr writes a third graveminder novel.

Amity and Rebekah are trying to figure out why so many dead are rising. The sheriff has to decide if he is going to be in on the secret. Rebekah’s best friend is starting to remember all the strange things that happen in town. Death itself is coming to town. This book was well-written and was a great continuation of the first story. I enjoyed the characters again and the story was taken to the next level. I really hope we get a third book to wrap up the series because of the cliffhanger this one leaves off on.
